We introduce the concept of `claspers,' which are surfaces in 3-manifolds with some additional structure on which surgery operations can be performed. Using claspers we define for each positive integer k an equivalence relation on links called `C_k-equivalence,' which is generated by surgery operations of a certain kind called `C_k-moves'. We prove that two knots in the 3-sphere are C_{k+1}-equivalent if and only if they have equal values of Vassiliev-Goussarov invariants of type k with values in any abelian groups. This result gives a characterization in terms of surgery operations of the informations that can be carried by Vassiliev-Goussarov invariants. In the last section we also describe outlines of some applications of claspers to other fields in 3-dimensional topology.
We prove that two links related by a surgery along a connected, strict graph clasper of degree n are C_n-equivalent, i.e, related by a sequence of surgeries along strict tree claspers of degree n.
Two links are link-homotopic if they are transformed into each other by a sequence of self-crossing changes and ambient isotopies. The link-homotopy classes of 4-component links were classified by Levine with enormous algebraic computations. We modify the results by using Habiro's clasper theory. The new classification gives more symmetrical and schematic points of view to the link-homotopy classes of 4-component links. As applications, we give several new subsets of the link-homotopy classes of 4-component links which are classified by comparable invariants and give an algorithm which determi…
We prove that if n\ge1, then an (n+1)-component Brunnian link L in a connected, oriented 3-manifold is C_n-equivalent to an unlink. We also prove that if n\ge2, then L can not be distinguished from an unlink by any Goussarov-Vassiliev finite type invariant of degree<2n.
Habegger and Lin gave a classification of the link-hmotopy classes of links as the link-homotopy classes of string links modulo the actions of conjugations and partial conjugations for string links. In this paper, we calculated the actions of the partial conjugations and the conjugations explicitly for 4- and 5-component string links which gave classifications (presentations) of the link-homotopy classes of 4- and 5-component links. As an application, we can run Habegger and Lin's algorithm which determines whether given two links are link-homotopoic or not for 4- and 5-component links.
We study the 2-loop part of the rational Kontsevich integral of a knot in an integer homology sphere. We give a general formula which explains how the 2-loop part of the Kontsevich integral of a knot changes after surgery on a single clasper whose leaves are not linked to the knot. As an application, we relate this formula with a conjecture of L. Rozansky about integrality of the 2-loop polynomial of a knot.
We develop an algorithm for computing generalized Seifert matrices for colored links given as closures of colored braids. The algorithm has been implemented by the second author as a computer program called Clasper. Clasper also outputs the Conway potential function, the multivariable Alexander polynomial and the Cimasoni-Florens signatures of a link, and displays a visualization of the C-complex used for producing the generalized Seifert matrices.
Recently Swatee Naik and Theodore Stanford proved that two S-equivalent knots are related by a finite sequence of doubled-delta moves on their knot diagrams. We show that classical S-equivalence is not sufficient to extend their result to ordered links. We define a new algebraic relation on Seifert matrices, called Strong S-equivalence, and prove that two oriented, ordered links L and L' are related by a sequence of doubled-delta moves if and only if they are Strongly S-equivalent. We also show that this is equivalent to the fact that L' can be obtained from L through a sequence of Y-clasper s…
Minor typographical errors fixed. Cochran constructed many links with Alexander module that of the unlink and some nonvanishing Milnor invariants, using as input commutators in a free group and as an invariant the longitudes of the links. We present a different and conjecturally complete construction, that uses elementary properties of clasper surgery, and a different invariant, the tree-part of the LMO invariant. Our method also constructs links with trivial higher Alexander modules and nontrivial Milnor invariants.
In this paper, the easier methods of my thesis are applied to give a simple proof of a theorem of Goussarov. The theorem relates two possible notions of finite type equivalence of knots, links or string links, showing that the resulting filtrations are the same up to a degree shift by a factor of two. This is then applied to the situation of rooted claspers to show that rooted claspers of sufficiently high degree must preserve type k invariants. As a consequence, grope cobordisms of sufficiently high class must preserve type k invariants. This result is applied in math.GT/0012118, to show Theo…
We give a purely topological definition of the perturbative quantum invariants of links and 3-manifolds associated with Chern-Simons field theory. Our definition is as close as possible to one given by Kontsevich. We will also establish some basic properties of these invariants, in particular that they are universally finite type with respect to algebraically split surgery and with respect to Torelli surgery. Torelli surgery is a mutual generalization of blink surgery of Garoufalidis and Levine and clasper surgery of Habiro.
It has long been known that a Milnor invariant with no repeated index is an invariant of link homotopy. We show that Milnor's invariants with repeated indices are invariants not only of isotopy, but also of self C_k-moves. A self C_k-move is a natural generalization of link homotopy based on certain degree k clasper surgeries, which provides a filtration of link homotopy classes.
We show that the Casson knot invariant, linking number and Milnor's triple linking number, together with a certain 2-string link invariant $V_2$, are necessary and sufficient to express any string link Vassiliev invariant of order two. Explicit combinatorial formulas are given for these invariants. This result is applied to the theory of claspers for string links.
We use Kirk's invariant of link maps $S^2\sqcup S^2\to S^4$ and its variations due to Koschorke and Kirk-Livingston to deduce results about classical links. Namely, we give a new proof of the Nakanishi-Ohyama classification of two-component links in $S^3$ up to $Δ$-link homotopy. We also prove its version for string links, which is due (in a slightly different form) to Fleming-Yasuhara. The proofs do not use Clasper Theory.
For an $n$-component link $L$, the Milnor's isotopy invariant is defined for each multi-index $I=i_1i_2...i_m (i_j\in\n)$. Here $m$ is called the length. Let $r(I)$ denote the maximam number of times that any index appears. It is known that Milnor invariants with $r=1$ are link-homotopy invariant. N. Habegger and X. S. Lin showed that two string links are a link-homotopc if and only if their Milnor invariants with $r=1$ coincide. This gives us that a link in $S^3$ is link-homotopic to a trivial link if and only if the all Milnor invariants of the link with $r=1$ vanish. Although Milnor invaria…
We develop a calculus for diagrams of knotted objects. We define Arrow presentations, which encode the crossing informations of a diagram into arrows in a way somewhat similar to Gauss diagrams, and more generally w-tree presentations, which can be seen as `higher order Gauss diagrams'. This Arrow calculus is used to develop an analogue of Habiro's clasper theory for welded knotted objects, which contain classical link diagrams as a subset. This provides a 'realization' of Polyak's algebra of arrow diagrams at the welded level, and leads to a characterization of finite type invariants of welde…
We show that the map on components from the space of classical long knots to the n-th stage of its Goodwillie-Weiss embedding calculus tower is a map of monoids whose target is an abelian group and which is invariant under clasper surgery. We deduce that this map on components is a finite type-(n-1) knot invariant. We also compute the second page in total degree zero for the spectral sequence converging to the components of this tower as Z-modules of primitive chord diagrams, providing evidence for the conjecture that the tower is a universal finite-type invariant over the integers. Key to the…
We study finite type invariants of nullhomologous knots in a closed 3-manifold $M$ defined in terms of certain descending filtration $\{\mathscr{K}_n(M)\}_{n\geq 0}$ of the vector space $\mathscr{K}(M)$ spanned by isotopy classes of nullhomologous knots in $M$. The filtration $\{\mathscr{K}_n(M)\}_{n \geq 0}$ is defined by surgeries on special kinds of claspers in $M$ having one special leaf. More precisely, when $M$ is fibered over $S^1$ and $H_1(M)=\mathbb{Z}$, we study how far the natural surgery map from the space of $\mathbb{Q}[t^{\pm 1}]$-colored Jacobi diagrams on $S^1$ of degree $n$ to…
In this paper we introduce two theories of finite type invariants for framed links with fixed linking matrix. We show that these thepries are related to the theory of Vassiliev invariants of framed links. We also study the corresponding spaces of ``chord diagrams''.
We prove that for knots and links that are closures of 5-braids, single-colored ADO-invariant of third order coincides with Links-Gould polynomial with specific choice of variables. We also conjecture that this is true for any knots and links and provide some arguments for that.
We generalize the notion of the quandle polynomial to the case of singquandles. We show that the singquandle polynomial is an invariant of finite singquandles. We also construct a singular link invariant from the singquandle polynomial and show that this new singular link invariant generalizes the singquandle counting invariant. In particular, using the new polynomial invariant, we can distinguish singular links with the same singquandle counting invariant.
We study Coxeter racks over $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and the knot and link invariants they define. We exploit the module structure of these racks to enhance the rack counting invariants and give examples showing that these enhanced invariants are stronger than the unenhanced rack counting invariants.
We define ambient isotopy invariants of oriented knots and links using the counting invariants of framed links defined by finite racks. These invariants reduce to the usual quandle counting invariant when the rack in question is a quandle. We are able to further enhance these counting invariants with 2-cocycles from the coloring rack's second rack cohomology satisfying a new degeneracy condition which reduces to the usual case for quandles.
We extend our previous work from arXiv:1903.06863 on biquandle module invariants of oriented surface-links to the case of unoriented surface-links using bikei modules. The resulting infinite family of enhanced invariants proves be effective at distinguishing unoriented and especially non-orientable surface-links; in particular, we show that these invariants are more effective than the bikei homset cardinality invariant alone at distinguishing non-orientable surface-links. Moreover, as another application we note that our previous biquandle modules which do not satisfy the bikei module axioms a…
We introduce and study in detail an invariant of (1,1) tangles. This invariant, derived from a family of four dimensional representations of the quantum superalgebra U_q[gl(2|1)], will be referred to as the Links-Gould invariant. We find that our invariant is distinct from the Jones, HOMFLY and Kauffman polynomials (detecting chirality of some links where these invariants fail), and that it does not distinguish mutants or inverses. The method of evaluation is based on an abstract tensor state model for the invariant that is quite useful for computation as well as theoretical exploration.
Using basic topology and linear algebra, we define a plethora of invariants of boundary links whose values are power series with noncommuting variables. These turn out to be useful and elementary reformulations of an invariant originally defined by M. Farber.
We study various specializations of the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomial. These specializations are used to show that the multivariable link invariants arising from a complex family of sl(m|n) super-modules previously defined by the authors contains both the multivariable Alexander polynomial and Kashaev's invariants. We conjecture these multivariable link invariants also specialize to the generalized multivariable Alexander invariants defined by Y. Akutsu, T. Deguchi, and T. Ohtsuki.
In this paper we construct a multivariable link invariant arising from the quantum group associated to the special linear Lie superalgebra sl(2|1). The usual quantum group invariant of links associated to (generic) representations of sl(2|1) is trivial. However, we modify this construction and define a nontrivial link invariant. This new invariant can be thought of as a multivariable version of the Links-Gould invariant. We also show that after a variable reduction our invariant specializes to the Conway potential function, which is a version of the multivariable Alexander polynomial.
We identify a subcategory of biracks which define counting invariants of unoriented links, which we call involutory biracks. In particular, involutory biracks of birack rank N=1 are biquandles, which we call bikei. We define counting invariants of unoriented classical and virtual links using finite involutory biracks, and we give an example of a non-involutory birack whose counting invariant detects the non-invertibility of a virtual knot.
Pulling back the weight system associated with the exceptional Lie algebra G_2 by a modification of the universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant yields a link invariant; extending it to 3-nets, we derive a recursive algorithm for its evaluation.
We introduce an associative algebra Z[X,S] associated to a birack shadow and define enhancements of the birack counting invariant for classical knots and links via representations of Z[X,S] known as shadow modules. We provide examples which demonstrate that the shadow module enhanced invariants are not determined by the Alexander polynomial or the unenhanced birack counting invariants.
In this paper we give a re-normalization of the Reshetikhin-Turaev quantum invariants of links, by modified quantum dimensions. In the case of simple Lie algebras these modified quantum dimensions are proportional to the usual quantum dimensions. More interestingly we will give two examples where the usual quantum dimensions vanish but the modified quantum dimensions are non-zero and lead to non-trivial link invariants. The first of these examples is a class of invariants arising from Lie superalgebras previously defined by the first two authors. These link invariants are multivariable and gen…
M. Khovanov and L. Rozansky gave a categorification of the HOMFLY-PT polynomial. This study is a generalization of the Khovanov-Rozansky homology. We define a homology associated to the quantum $(sl_n,\land V_n)$ link invariant, where $\land V_n$ is the set of the fundamental representations of the quantum group of $sl_n$. In the case of a [1,k]-colored link diagram, we prove that its homology is a link invariant. In the case of an [i,j]-colored link diagram, we define a normalized Poincare polynomial of its homology and prove the polynomial is a link invariant.

This paper generalize [7](math.GT/0601291): We construct new links invariants from g, a type I basic classical Lie superalgebra. The construction uses the existence of an unexpected replacement of the vanishing quantum dimension of typical module. Using this, we get a multivariable link invariant associated to any one parameter family of irreducible g-modules.
Enhanced Yang-Baxter operators give rise to invariants of oriented links. We expand the enhancing method to generalized Yang-Baxter operators. At present two examples of generalized Yang-Baxter operators are known and recently three types of variations for one of these were discovered. We present the definition of enhanced generalized YB-operators and show that all known examples of generalized YB-operators can be enhanced to give corresponding invariants of oriented links. Most of these invariants are specializations of the polynomial invariant $P$. Invariants from generalized YB-operators ar…
All polynomial invariants of links for two dimensional solutions of Yang-Baxter equation is constructed by employing Turaev's method. As a consequence, it is proved that the best invariant so constructed is the Jones polynomial and there exist three solutions connecting to the Alexander polynomial. Invariants for higher dimensional solutions, obtained by the so-called dressings, are also investigated. It is observed that the dressings do not improve link invariant unless some restrictions are put on dressed solutions.
The aim of this paper is to define two link invariants satisfying cubic skein relations. In the hierarchy of polynomial invariants determined by explicit skein relations they are the next level of complexity after Jones, HOMFLY, Kauffman and Kuperberg's $G_2$ quantum invariants. Our method consists in the study of Markov traces on a suitable tower of quotients of cubic Hecke algebras extending Jones approach.
The usual construction of link invariants from quantum groups applied to the superalgebra D_{2 1,alpha} is shown to be trivial. One can modify this construction to get a two variable invariant. Unusually, this invariant is additive with respect to connected sum or disjoint union. This invariant contains an infinity of Vassiliev invariants that are not seen by the quantum invariants coming from Lie algebras (so neither by the colored HOMFLY-PT nor by the colored Kauffman polynomials).
Oleg Viro studied in arXiv:math/0204290 two interpretations of the (multivariable) Alexander polynomial as a quantum link invariant: either by considering the quasi triangular Hopf algebra associated to $U_q sl(2)$ at fourth roots of unity, or by considering the super Hopf algebra $U_q gl(1|1)$. In this paper, we show these Hopf algebras share properties with the $-1$ specialization of $U_q gl(n|1)$ leading to the proof of a conjecture of David De Wit, Atsushi Ishii and Jon Links on the Links-Gould invariants.
New invariants of links are constructed using the skein invariant polynomial of colored links defined by the author in [1]. These invariants are stronger than the homflypt polynomial.
We present a construction of invariants for links using an isomorphism theorem for affine Yokonuma--Hecke algebras. The isomorphism relates affine Yokonuma--Hecke algebras with usual affine Hecke algebras. We use it to construct a large class of Markov traces on affine Yokonuma--Hecke algebras, and in turn, to produce invariants for links in the solid torus. By restriction, this construction contains the construction of invariants for classical links from classical Yokonuma--Hecke algebras. In general, the obtained invariants form an infinite family of 3-variables polynomials. As a consequence…
Virtual links were introduced by Kauffman in 1999. We characterize the virtual link invariants that are partition functions of vertex models (as considered by de la Harpe and Jones), both in the real and in the complex case. We show that for any fixed number of states, these invariants form an affine variety. Basic techniques are the first and second fundamental theorem of invariant theory for the orthogonal group (in the sense of Weyl) and some related methods from algebraic geometry.
We present state sums for quantum link invariants arising from the representation theory of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{N|M})$. We investigate the case of the $N$-th exterior power of the standard representation of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{N|1})$ and explicit the relation with Kashaev invariants.
In this paper, we formulate a construction of ideal coset invariants for surface-links in $4$-space using invariants for knots and links in $3$-space. We apply the construction to the Kauffman bracket polynomial invariant and obtain an invariant for surface-links called the Kauffman bracket ideal coset invariant of surface-links. We also define a series of new invariants $\{{\mathbf K}_{2n-1}(\mathcal L) | n=2, 3, 4, \ldots\}$ for surface-links $\mathcal L$ by using skein relations, which are more effective than the Kauffman bracket ideal coset invariant to distinguish given surface-links.
We consider Milnor invariants for certain covering links as a generalization of covering linkage invariants formulated by R. Hartley and K. Murasugi. A set of Milnor invariants for covering links is a cobordism invariant of a link, and that this invariant can distinguish some links for which the ordinary Milnor invariants coincide. Moreover, for a Brunnian link $L$, the first non-vanishing Milnor invariants of $L$ is modulo-$2$ congruent to a sum of Milnor invariants of covering links. As a consequence, a sum of linking numbers of ' iterated' covering links gives the first non-vanishing Milnor…
We study the eta-invariants of links and show that in many cases they form link concordance invariants, in particular that many eta-invariants vanish for slice links. This result contains and generalizes previous invariants by Smolinsky and Cha--Ko. We give a formula for the eta-invariant for boundary links. In several intersting cases this allows us to show that a given link is not slice. We show that even more eta-invariants have to vanish for boundary slice links. We give an example of a boundary link $L$ that is not boundary slice but where all the known link concordance invariants compute…
Virtual knot theory is a generalization of knot theory which is based on Gauss chord diagrams and link diagrams on closed oriented surfaces. A twisted knot is a generalization of a virtual knot, which corresponds to a link diagram on a possibly non-orientable surface. In this paper, we discuss an invariant of twisted links which is obtained from the JKSS invariant of virtual links by use of double coverings. We also discuss some properties of double covering diagrams.
We define an annular concordance invariant and study its properties. When specialized to braids, this invariant gives bounds on band rank. We introduce a modified chain complex to reformulate the invariant. Then, by focusing on a special case, we give a refinement of the transverse invariant $\hatθ$. We also study the relationship of this invariant with transverse and braid monodromy properties.
Tied links and the tied braid monoid were introduced recently by the authors and used to define new invariants for classical links. Here, we give a version purely algebraic-combinatoric of tied links. With this new version we prove that the tied braid monoid has a decomposition like a semi--direct group product. By using this decomposition we reprove the Alexander and Markov theorem for tied links; also, we introduce the tied singular knots, the tied singular braid monoid and certain families of Homflypt type invariants for tied singular links; these invariants are five-variables polynomials. …
We define a notion of finite type invariants for links with a fixed linking matrix. We show that Milnor's triple link homotopy invariant is a finite type invariant, of type 1, in this sense. We also generalize the approach to Milnor's higher order homotopy invariants and show that they are also, in a sense, of finite type. Finally, we compare our approach to another approach for defining finite type invariants within linking classes.
We introduce the notion of a quandle with a good involution and its homology groups. Carter et al. defined quandle cocycle invariants for oriented links and oriented surface-links. By use of good involutions, quandle cocyle invariants can be defined for links and surface-links which are not necessarily oriented or orientable. The invariants can be used in order to estimate the minimal triple point numbers of non-orientable surface-links.
We define a family of link concordance invariants $\left\{ s_n \right\}_{n=2,3, \cdots}$. These link concordance invariants give lower bounds on the slice genus of a link $L$. We compute the slice genus of positive links. Moreover, these invariants give lower bounds on the link splitting number of a link. Especially, this new lower bound determines the splitting number of positive torus links. This is a generalization of Lobb's knot concordance invariants $\left\{ s_n \right\}$, obtained from Gornik's spectral sequence.
We show that the coefficients of the re-normalized link invariants of the paper "Multivariable link invariants arising from Lie superalgebras of type I" are Vassiliev invariants which give rise to a canonical family of weight systems.
We affirmatively address the question of whether the proposed link homotopy invariant $ω$ of Li is well-defined. It is also shown that if one wishes to adapt the homotopy invariant $τ$ of Schneiderman-Teichner to a link homotopy invariant of link maps, the result coincides with $ω$.
