We investigate pseudodifferential operators on arbitrary locally compact abelian groups. As symbol classes for the Kohn-Nirenberg calculus we introduce a version of Sjoestrand's class. Pseudodifferential operators with such symbols form a Banach algebra that is closed under inversion. Since "hard analysis" techniques are not available on locally compact abelian groups, a new time-frequency approach is used with the emphasis on modulation spaces, Gabor frames, and Banach algebras of matrices. Sjoestrand's original results are thus understood as a phenomenon of abstract harmonic analysis rather than "hard analysis" and are proved in their natural context and generality.
In this paper, we study the boundedness of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the Hörmander class $S^0_{ρ,ρ}$ on $α$-modulation spaces $M_{p,q}^{s,α}$, and consider the relation between $α$ and $ρ$. In particular, we show that pseudodifferential operators with symbols in $S^0_{α,α}$ are bounded on all $α$-modulation spaces $M^{s,α}_{p,q}$, for arbitrary $s\in\mathbb{R}$ and for the whole range of exponents $0 < p,q \leq \infty$.
Smooth pseudodifferential operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be characterized by their mapping properties between $L^p-$Sobolev spaces due to Beals and Ueberberg. In applications such a characterization would also be useful in the non-smooth case, for example to show the regularity of solutions of a partial differential equation. Therefore, we will show that every linear operator $P$, which satisfies some specific continuity assumptions, is a non-smooth pseudodifferential operator of the symbol-class $C^τ S^m_{1,0}(\mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n)$. The main new difficulties are the limited mapp…
This paper provides sufficient conditions for the boundedness of Weyl operators on modulation spaces. The Weyl symbols belong to Wiener amalgam spaces, or generalized modulation spaces, as recently renamed by their inventor Hans Feichtinger. This is the first result which relates symbols in Wiener amalgam spaces to operators acting on classical modulation spaces.
Classically, Gohberg-type Lemmas provide lower bounds for the distance of suitable pseudodifferential operators acting in a Hilbert space to the ideal of compact operators, in terms of "the behavior of the symbol at infinity". In this article the pseudodifferential operators are associated to a compact Abelian group $X$ and an important role is played by its Pontryagin dual $\widehat X$. Hörmander-type classes of symbols are not always available; they will be replaced by crossed product $C^*$-algebras involving a vanishing oscillation condition, which anyway is more general even in the particu…
In this paper we focus on the almost-diagonalization properties of $τ$-pseudodifferential operators using techniques from time-frequency analysis. Our function spaces are modulation spaces and the special class of Wiener amalgam spaces arising by considering the action of the Fourier transform of modulation spaces. A particular example is provided by the Sjöstrand class, for which Gröchenig exhibited the almost diagonalization of Weyl operators. We shall show that such result can be extended to any $τ$-pseudodifferential operator, for $τ\in [0,1]$, also with symbol in weighted Wiener amalgam s…
In this paper we prove sufficient conditions for the Fredholm property of a non-smooth pseudodifferential operator $P$ which symbol is in a Hölder space with respect to the spatial variable. As a main ingredient for the proof we use a suitable symbol-smoothing.
We consider global pseudodifferential operators on symmetric spaces of noncompact type, defined using spherical functions. The associated symbols have a natural probabilistic form that extend the notion of the characteristic exponent appearing in Gangolli's Lévy-Khinchine formula to a function of two variables. The Hille-Yosida-Ray theorem is used to obtain conditions on such a symbol so that the corresponding pseudodifferential operator has an extension that generates a sub-Feller semigroup, generalising existing results for Euclidean space.
Consider an elliptic self-adjoint pseudodifferential operator $A$ acting on $m$-columns of half-densities on a closed manifold $M$, whose principal symbol is assumed to have simple eigenvalues. Relying on a basis of pseudodifferential projections commuting with $A$, we construct an almost-unitary pseudodifferential operator that diagonalizes $A$ modulo an infinitely smoothing operator. We provide an invariant algorithm for the computation of its full symbol, as well as an explicit closed formula for its subprincipal symbol. Finally, we give a quantitative description of the relation between th…
In this review we focus on the almost diagonalization of pseudodifferential operators and highlight the advantages that time-frequency techniques provide here. In particular, we retrace the steps of an insightful paper by Gröchenig, who succeeded in characterizing a class of symbols previously investigated by Seöstrand by noticing that Gabor frames almost diagonalize the corresponding Weyl operators. This approach also allows to give new and more natural proofs of related results such as boundedness of operators or algebra and Wiener properties of the symbol class. Then, we discuss some recent…
In this paper, we give a sharp sparse domination of pseudodifferential operators associated with symbols belonging to the Hörmander class, and fundamental solutions of dispersive equations. Furthermore, we give boundedness results of these operators on weighted Besov spaces by using the sparse domination.
We construct a Weyl pseudodifferential calculus tailored to studying boundedness of operators on weighted $L^p$ spaces over $\mathbb{R}^d$ with weights of the form $\exp(-ϕ(x))$, for $ϕ$ a $C^2$ function, a setting in which the operator associated to the weighted Dirichlet form typically has only holomorphic functional calculus. A symbol class giving rise to bounded operators on $L^p$ is determined, and its properties analysed. This theory is used to calculate an upper bounded on the $H^\infty$ angle of relevant operators, and deduces known optimal results in some cases. Finally, the symbol cl…
In this paper we discuss some spectral invariance results for non-smooth pseudodifferential operators with coefficients in Hölder spaces. In analogy to the proof in the smooth case of Beals and Ueberberg, we use the characterization of non-smooth pseudodifferential operators to get such a result. The main new difficulties are the limited mapping properties of pseudodifferential operators with non-smooth symbols and the fact, that in general the composition of two non-smooth pseudodifferential operators is not a pseudodifferential operator. In order to improve these spectral invariance results …
We study continuity properties on modulation spaces for $τ$-pseudodifferential operators with symbols $a$ in Wiener amalgam spaces. We obtain boundedness results for $τ\in (0,1)$ whereas, in the end-points $τ=0$ and $τ=1$, the corresponding operators are in general unbounded. Furthermore, for $τ\in (0,1)$, we exhibit a function of $τ$ which is an upper bound for the operator norm. The continuity properties of $τ$-pseudodifferential operators, for any $τ\in [0,1]$, with symbols $a$ in modulation spaces are well known. Here we find an upper bound for the operator norm which does not depend on th…
We extend the classical regularity theorem of elliptic operators to maximally hypoelliptic differential operators. More precisely, given vector fields $X_1,\ldots,X_m$ on a smooth manifold which satisfy Hörmander's bracket generating condition, we define a principal symbol for \textit{any} linear differential operator. Our symbol takes into account the vector fields $X_i$ and their commutators. We show that for an arbitrary differential operator, its principal symbol is invertible if and only if the operator is maximally hypoelliptic. This answers affirmatively a conjecture due to Helffer and …
Mixed-norm $α$-modulation spaces were introduced recently by Cleanthous and Georgiadis [Trans.\ Amer.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 373 (2020), no. 5, 3323-3356]. The mixed-norm spaces $M^{s,α}_{\vec{p},q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $α\in [0,1]$, form a family of smoothness spaces that contain the mixed-norm Besov spaces as special cases. In this paper we prove that a pseudodifferential operator $σ(x,D)$ with symbol in the Hörmander class $S^b_ρ$ extends to a bounded operator $σ(x,D)\colon M^{s,α}_{\vec{p},q}(\mathbb{R}^n) \rightarrow M^{s-b,α}_{\vec{p},q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ provided $0<α\leq ρ\leq 1$, $\vec{p}\in (0,\infty…
We study one-parameter families of pseudodifferential operators whose Weyl symbols are obtained by dilation and a smooth deformation of a symbol in a weighted Sjöstrand class. We show that their spectral edges are Lipschitz continuous functions of the dilation or deformation parameter. Suitably local estimates hold also for the edges of every spectral gap. These statements extend Bellissard's seminal results on the Lipschitz continuity of spectral edges for families of operators with periodic symbols to a large class of symbols with only mild regularity assumptions. The abstract results are us…
For operators belonging either to a class of global bisingular pseudodifferential operators on $R^m \times R^n$ or to a class of bisingular pseudodifferential operators on a product $M \times N$ of two closed smooth manifolds, we show the equivalence of their ellipticity (defined by the invertibility of certain associated homogeneous principal symbols) and their Fredholm mapping property in associated scales of Sobolev spaces. We also prove the spectral invariance of these operator classes and then extend these results to the even larger classes of Toeplitz type operators.
We generalize the results for Banach algebras of pseudodifferential operators obtained by Gröchenig and Rzeszotnik in [24] to quasi-algebras of Fourier integral operators. Namely, we introduce quasi-Banach algebras of symbol classes for Fourier integral operators that we call generalized metaplectic operators, including pseudodifferential operators. This terminology stems from the pioneering work on Wiener algebras of Fourier integral operators [11], which we generalize to our framework. This theory finds applications in the study of evolution equations such as the Cauchy problem for the Schrö…
On the torus, it is possible to assign a global symbol to a pseudodifferential operator using Fourier series. In this paper we investigate the relations between the local and global symbols for the operators in the classical Hörmander calculus and describe the principal symbols, the non-commutative residue and the canonical trace of an operator in terms of its global symbol. We also generalise these results to any compact Lie group.
The paper treats boundary value problems for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^a$, $a>0$, and more generally for classical pseudodifferential operators ($ψ$do's) $P$ of order $2a$ with even symbol, applied to functions on a smooth subset $Ω$ of ${\Bbb R}^n$. There are several meaningful local boundary conditions, such as the Dirichlet and Neumann conditions $γ_k^{a-1}u=φ$, $k=0,1$, where $γ_k^{a-1}u=c_k\partial_n^k(u/d^{a-1})|_{\partialΩ}$, $d(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,\partialΩ)$. We show a new Green's formula $$(Pu,v)_Ω-(u,P^*v)_Ω=(s_0γ_1^{a-1}u+Bγ_0^{a-1}u,γ_0^{a-1}v)_{\partialΩ}-(s_0γ_0^{a-1}u…
We introduce multilinear localization operators in terms of the short-time Fourier transform, and multilinear Weyl pseudodifferential operators. We prove that such localization operators are in fact Weyl pseudodifferential operators whose symbols are given by the convolution between the symbol of the localization operator and the multilinear Wigner transform. For such interpretation we use the kenrel theorem for the Gelfand-Shilov space. Furthermore, we study the continuity properties of the multilinear localization operators on modulation spaces. Our results extend some known results when res…
Let $Γ$ be a compact group acting on a smooth, compact manifold $M$, let $P \in ψ^m(M; E_0, E_1)$ be a $Γ$-invariant, classical pseudodifferential operator acting between sections of two equivariant vector bundles $E_i \to M$, $i = 0,1$, and let $α$ be an irreducible representation of the group $Γ$. Then $P$ induces a map $π_α(P) : H^s(M; E_0)_α\to H^{s-m}(M; E_1)_α$ between the $α$-isotypical components of the corresponding Sobolev spaces of sections. When $Γ$ is finite, we explicitly characterize the operators $P$ for which the map $π_α(P)$ is Fredholm in terms of the principal symbol of $P$…
We characterize the groupoids for which an operator is Fredholm if, and only if, its principal symbol and all its boundary restrictions are invertible. A groupoid with this property is called {\em Fredholm}. Using results on the Effros-Hahn conjecture, we show that an almost amenable, Hausdorff, second countable groupoid is Fredholm. Many groupoids, and hence many pseudodifferential operators appearing in practice, fit into this framework. In particular, one can use these results to characterize the Fredholm operators on manifolds with cylindrical and poly-cylindrical ends, on manifolds that a…
Born-Jordan operators are a class of pseudodifferential operators arising as a generalization of the quantization rule for polynomials on the phase space introduced by Born and Jordan in 1925. The weak definition of such operators involves the Born-Jordan distribution, first introduced by Cohen in 1966 as a member of the Cohen class. We perform a time-frequency analysis of the Cohen kernel of the Born -Jordan distribution, using modulation and Wiener amalgam spaces. We then provide sufficient and necessary conditions for Born-Jordan operators to be bounded on modulation spaces. We use modulati…
