We construct a Weyl pseudodifferential calculus tailored to studying boundedness of operators on weighted $L^p$ spaces over $\mathbb{R}^d$ with weights of the form $\exp(-ϕ(x))$, for $ϕ$ a $C^2$ function, a setting in which the operator associated to the weighted Dirichlet form typically has only holomorphic functional calculus. A symbol class giving rise to bounded operators on $L^p$ is determined, and its properties analysed. This theory is used to calculate an upper bounded on the $H^\infty$ angle of relevant operators, and deduces known optimal results in some cases. Finally, the symbol class is enriched and studied under an algebraic viewpoint.
We establish the existence of a bounded $H_\infty$-calculus for a large class of hypoelliptic pseudodifferential operators on R^n and closed manifolds.
In this paper, we introduce a parametric pseudodifferential calculus on noncommutative $n$-tori which is a natural nest for resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators. Unlike in some previous approaches to parametric pseudodifferential calculi, our parametric pseudodifferential calculus contains resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators that need not be differential operators. As an application we show that complex powers of positive elliptic pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative $n$-tori are pseudodifferential operators. This confirms a claim of Fathi-Ghorbanpour-K…
We use the functorial properties of Rieffel's pseudodifferential calculus to study families of operators associated to topological dynamical systems acted by a symplectic space. Information about the spectra and the essential spectra are extracted from the quasi-orbit structure of the dynamical system. The semi-classical behavior of the families of spectra is also studied.
We consider the crossed product $G_{ga}$ by $\R_+^*$ of the adiabatic groupoid associated with any Lie groupoid $G$. We construct an explicit Morita equivalence between the exact sequence of order 0 pseudodifferential operators on $G$ and (a restriction of) the natural exact sequence associated with $G_{ga}$. As an important intermediate step, we express a pseudodifferential operator on $G$ as an integral associated to a smoothing operator on the adiabatic groupoid $G_{ad}$ of $G$.
This paper provides sufficient conditions for the boundedness of Weyl operators on modulation spaces. The Weyl symbols belong to Wiener amalgam spaces, or generalized modulation spaces, as recently renamed by their inventor Hans Feichtinger. This is the first result which relates symbols in Wiener amalgam spaces to operators acting on classical modulation spaces.
We aim at constructing an analog of the Weyl calculus in an infinite dimensional setting, in which the usual configuration and phase spaces are ultimately replaced by infinite dimensional measure spaces, the so-called abstract Wiener spaces. The Hilbert space on which the operators act can be seen as a Fock space or, equivalently, as a space of square integrable functions on the configuration space. The construction is not straightforward and needs to split the configuration space into two factors, of which the first one is finite dimensional. Then one defines, for a convenient symbol $F$, a h…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the counting function of tensor products of operators, in the cases where the factors are either pseudodifferential operators on closed manifolds, or pseudodifferential operators of Shubin type on $\mathbb{R}^n$, respectively. We obtain, in particular, the sharpness of the remainder term in the corresponding Weyl formulae, which we prove by means of the analysis of some explicit examples.
We produce, on general homogeneous groups, an analogue of the usual Hörmander pseudodifferential calculus on Euclidean space, at least as far as products and adjoints are concerned. In contrast to earlier works, we do not limit ourselves to analogues of classical symbols, nor to the Heisenberg group. The key technique is to understand ``multipliers'' of any given order j, and the operators of convolution with their inverse Fourier transforms, which we here call convolution operators of order j. (Here a ``multiplier'' is an analogue of a Hörmander-type symbol a(x,ξ), which is independent of x.)…
We present in this paper the construction of a pseudodifferential calculus on smooth non-compact manifolds associated to a globally defined and coordinate independant complete symbol calculus, that generalizes the standard pseudodifferential calculus on $\R^n$. We consider the case of manifolds $M$ with linearization in the sense of Bokobza-Haggiag, such that the associated (abstract) exponential map provides global diffeomorphisms of $M$ with $\R^n$ at any point. Cartan--Hadamard manifolds are special cases of such manifolds. The abstract exponential map encodes a notion of infinity on the ma…
Let X be a smooth compact manifold with boundary. For smooth foliations on the boundary of X admitting a `resolution' in terms of a fibration, we construct a pseudodifferential calculus generalizing the fibred cusp calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose. In particular, we introduce certain symbols leading to a simple description of the Fredholm operators inside the calculus. When the leaves of the fibration `resolving' the foliation are compact, we also obtain an index formula for Fredholm perturbations of Dirac-type operators. Along the way, we obtain a formula for the adiabatic limit of the eta inva…
We study a class of quadratic time-frequency representations that, roughly speaking, are obtained by linear perturbations of the Wigner transform. They satisfy Moyal's formula by default and share many other properties with the Wigner transform, but in general they do not belong to Cohen's class. We provide a characterization of the intersection of the two classes. To any such time-frequency representation, we associate a pseudodifferential calculus. We investigate the related quantization procedure, study the properties of the pseudodifferential operators, and compare the formalism with that …
In this paper we focus on the almost-diagonalization properties of $τ$-pseudodifferential operators using techniques from time-frequency analysis. Our function spaces are modulation spaces and the special class of Wiener amalgam spaces arising by considering the action of the Fourier transform of modulation spaces. A particular example is provided by the Sjöstrand class, for which Gröchenig exhibited the almost diagonalization of Weyl operators. We shall show that such result can be extended to any $τ$-pseudodifferential operator, for $τ\in [0,1]$, also with symbol in weighted Wiener amalgam s…
We introduce multilinear localization operators in terms of the short-time Fourier transform, and multilinear Weyl pseudodifferential operators. We prove that such localization operators are in fact Weyl pseudodifferential operators whose symbols are given by the convolution between the symbol of the localization operator and the multilinear Wigner transform. For such interpretation we use the kenrel theorem for the Gelfand-Shilov space. Furthermore, we study the continuity properties of the multilinear localization operators on modulation spaces. Our results extend some known results when res…
We study pseudodifferential boundary value problems in the context of the Boutet de Monvel calculus or Green operators, with nonsmooth coefficients on smooth compact manifolds with boundary. In order to have a definition that is independent of the choice of (smooth) coordinates, we prove that nonsmooth Green operators are invariant under smooth coordinate transformations.
In this review we focus on the almost diagonalization of pseudodifferential operators and highlight the advantages that time-frequency techniques provide here. In particular, we retrace the steps of an insightful paper by Gröchenig, who succeeded in characterizing a class of symbols previously investigated by Seöstrand by noticing that Gabor frames almost diagonalize the corresponding Weyl operators. This approach also allows to give new and more natural proofs of related results such as boundedness of operators or algebra and Wiener properties of the symbol class. Then, we discuss some recent…
Let $\left( W,σ\right) $ be a symplectic vector space and let $% T:W\rightarrow W$ be a linear map that satisfies a certain condition of non-degeneracy. We define the Schur multiplier $ω_{σ,T}$ on $W$. To this multiplier we associate a $ω_{σ,T}$-representation and and we build the $T$-Weyl calculus, $\mathrm{Op}_{σ,T}$, whose properties are are systematically studied further.
We extend the classical regularity theorem of elliptic operators to maximally hypoelliptic differential operators. More precisely, given vector fields $X_1,\ldots,X_m$ on a smooth manifold which satisfy Hörmander's bracket generating condition, we define a principal symbol for \textit{any} linear differential operator. Our symbol takes into account the vector fields $X_i$ and their commutators. We show that for an arbitrary differential operator, its principal symbol is invertible if and only if the operator is maximally hypoelliptic. This answers affirmatively a conjecture due to Helffer and …
Summarizing basic facts from abstract topological modules over Colombeau generalized complex numbers we discuss duality of Colombeau algebras. In particular, we focus on generalized delta functionals and operator kernels as elements of dual spaces. A large class of examples is provided by pseudodifferential operators acting on Colombeau algebras. By a refinement of symbol calculus we review a new characterization of the wave front set for generalized functions with applications to microlocal analysis.
We find some explicit bounds on the ${\mathcal L}(L^2)$-norm of pseudo-differential operators with symbols defined by a metric on the phase space. In particular, we prove that this norm depends only on the "structure constants" of the metric and a fixed semi-norm of the symbol. Analogous statements are made for the Fefferman-Phong inequality.
The extended Heisenberg algebra for a contact manifold has a symbolic calculus that accommodates both Heisenberg pseudodifferential operators as well as classical pseudodifferential operators. We derive here a formula for the index of Fredholm operators in this extended calculus. This formula incorporates in a single expression the Atiyah-Singer formula for elliptic operators, as well as Boutet de Monvel's Toeplitz index formula.
We investigate pseudodifferential operators on arbitrary locally compact abelian groups. As symbol classes for the Kohn-Nirenberg calculus we introduce a version of Sjoestrand's class. Pseudodifferential operators with such symbols form a Banach algebra that is closed under inversion. Since "hard analysis" techniques are not available on locally compact abelian groups, a new time-frequency approach is used with the emphasis on modulation spaces, Gabor frames, and Banach algebras of matrices. Sjoestrand's original results are thus understood as a phenomenon of abstract harmonic analysis rather …
Consider an h-pseudodifferential operator P, whose symbol extends holomorphically to a tubular neighborhood of the real phase space and converges sufficiently fast to 1, so that the determinant of P is well-defined. We show that the modulus of this determinant is asymptotically bounded by an exponential of the integral of the logarithm of the modulus of the symbol along a certain complex deformation of the real phase space. Since there are many possible such deformations, we get a variational problem. The paper is devoted to the corresponding variational calculus.
We study almost periodic pseudodifferential operators acting on almost periodic functions $G_{\rm ap}^s(\rr d)$ of Gevrey regularity index $s \geq 1$. We prove that almost periodic operators with symbols of Hörmander type $S_{ρ,δ}^m$ satisfying an $s$-Gevrey condition are continuous on $G_{\rm ap}^s(\rr d)$ provided $0 < ρ\leq 1$, $δ=0$ and $s ρ\geq 1$. A calculus is developed for symbols and operators using a notion of regularizing operator adapted to almost periodic Gevrey functions and its duality. We apply the results to show a regularity result in this context for a class of hypoelliptic …
In this paper we present a formula for the index of a pseudodifferential operator with invertible principal symbol in the extended Heisenberg calculus of Epstein and Melrose. Our results build on the work we did in a previous paper (arXiv:2010.02900), where we restricted attention to the Heisenberg calculus proper.
Classically, Gohberg-type Lemmas provide lower bounds for the distance of suitable pseudodifferential operators acting in a Hilbert space to the ideal of compact operators, in terms of "the behavior of the symbol at infinity". In this article the pseudodifferential operators are associated to a compact Abelian group $X$ and an important role is played by its Pontryagin dual $\widehat X$. Hörmander-type classes of symbols are not always available; they will be replaced by crossed product $C^*$-algebras involving a vanishing oscillation condition, which anyway is more general even in the particu…
We consider here pseudo-differential operators whose symbol $σ(x,ξ)$ is not infinitely smooth with respect to $x$. Decomposing such symbols into four -sometimes five- components and using tools of paradifferential calculus, we derive sharp estimates on the action of such pseudo-differential operators on Sobolev spaces and give explicit expressions for their operator norm in terms of the symbol $σ(x,ξ)$. We also study commutator estimates involving such operators, and generalize or improve the so-called Kato-Ponce and Calderon-Coifman-Meyer estimates in various ways.
This paper is based on talks delivered in summer 2008 at the Conference on Motives, QFT and Pseudodifferential Operators in Boston, and at the Trimester programme Geometry and Physics, Hausdorff Institute for Mathematics in Bonn The paper surveys the pseudodifferential calculus with parameter, resolvent expansions, Dixmier trace, noncommutative residue, Kontsevich-Vishik canonical trace as well some aspects of regularized integrals on spaces of symbols.
We define new symbol classes for pseudodifferntial operators and investigate their pseudodifferential calculus. The symbol classes are parametrized by commutative convolution algebras. To every solid convolution algebra over a lattice we associate a symbol class. Then every operator with such a symbol is almost diagonal with respect to special wave packets (coherent states or Gabor frames), and the rate of almost diagonalization is described precisely by the underlying convolution algebra. Furthermore, the corresponding class of pseudodifferential operators is a Banach algebra of bounded opera…
The paper reviews properties of the Weyl functional calculus for several operators and its relation to the generalised numerical range of $n$ hermitian matrices. The support and singular support of the Weyl functional calculus for $n$ hermitian matrices are determined by Kippenhahn varieties in algebraic geometry.
We develop our earlier approach to the Weyl calculus for representations of infinite-dimensional Lie groups by establishing continuity properties of the Moyal product for symbols belonging to various modulation spaces. For instance, we prove that the modulation space of symbols $M^{\infty,1}$ is an associative Banach algebra and the corrresponding operators are bounded. We then apply the abstract results to two classes of representations, namely the unitary irreducible representations of nilpotent Lie groups, and the natural representations of the semidirect product groups that govern the magn…
We outline an abstract approach to the pseudo-differential Weyl calculus for operators in function spaces in infinitely many variables. Our earlier approach to the Weyl calculus for Lie group representations is extended to the case of representations associated with infinite-dimensional coadjoint orbits. We illustrate the approach by the case of infinite-dimensional Heisenberg groups. The classical Weyl-Hörmander calculus is recovered for the Schrödinger representations of the finite-dimensional Heisenberg groups.
We consider a class of pseudodifferential operators defined on the product of two closed manifolds, with crossed vector valued symbols. We study the asymptotic expansion of Weyl counting function of positive selfadjoint operators in this class. Exploiting a general Theorem of J. Aramaki, we determine the first term of the asymptotic expansion of Weyl counting function and, in a special case, we find the second term. We finish with some examples, emphasizing connections with problems of analytic number theory, in particular with Dirichlet Divisor Problem.
It is shown that an elliptic scattering operator $A$ on a compact manifold with boundary with coefficients in the bounded operators of a bundle of Banach spaces of class (HT) and Pisier's property $(α)$ has maximal regularity (up to a spectral shift), provided that the spectrum of the principal symbol of $A$ on the scattering cotangent bundle of the manifold avoids the right half-plane. This is deduced directly from a Seeley theorem, i.e. the resolvent is represented in terms of pseudodifferential operators with R-bounded symbols, thus showing by an iteration argument the R-boundedness of $λ(A…
We give an algebraic/geometric characterization of the classical pseudodifferential operators on a smooth manifold in terms of the tangent groupoid and its natural $\mathbb{R}^\times_+$-action. Specifically, we show that a properly supported semiregular distribution on $M\times M$ is the Schwartz kernel of a classical pseudodifferential operator if and only if it extends to a smooth family of distributions on the range fibres of the tangent groupoid which is homogeneous for the $\mathbb{R}^\times_+$-action modulo smooth functions. Moreover, we show that the basic properties of pseudodifferenti…
We are consider domains in cotangent bundles with the property that the null foliation of their boundary is fibrating and the leaves satisfy a Bohr-Sommerfeld condition (for example, the unit disk bundle of a Zoll metric). Given such a domain, we construct an algebra of associated semiclassical pseudodifferential operators with singular symbols. The Schwartz kernels of the operators have frequency set contained in the union of the diagonal and the flow-out of the null foliation of the boundary of the domain. We develop a symbolic calculus, prove the existence of projectors (under a mild additi…
We discuss an extension of Toeplitz quantization based on polyanalytic functions. We derive isomorphism theorem for polyanalytic Toeplitz operators between weighted Sobolev-Fock spaces of polyanalytic functions, which are images of modulation spaces under polyanalytic Bargmann transforms. This generalizes well-known results from the analytic setting. Finally, we derive an asymptotic symbol calculus and present an asymptotic expansion of complex Weyl operators in terms of polyanalytic Toeplitz operators.
In the presence of a variable magnetic field, the Weyl pseudodifferential calculus must be modified. The usual modification, based on ``the minimal coupling principle'' at the level of the classical symbols, does not lead to gauge invariant formulae if the magnetic field is not constant. We present a gauge covariant quantization, relying on the magnetic canonical commutation relations. The underlying symbolic calculus is a deformation, defined in terms of the magnetic flux through triangles, of the classical Moyal product.
In this paper, we establish the core of singular integral theory and pseudodifferential calculus over the archetypal algebras of noncommutative geometry: quantum forms of Euclidean spaces and tori. Our results go beyond Connes' pseudodifferential calculus for rotation algebras, thanks to a new form of Calderón-Zygmund theory over these spaces which crucially incorporates nonconvolution kernels. We deduce $L_p$-boundedness and Sobolev $p$-estimates for regular, exotic and forbidden symbols in the expected ranks. In the $L_2$ level both Calderón-Vaillancourt and Bourdaud theorems for exotic and …
We derive conditions that ensure the existence of a bounded $H_\infty$-calculus in weighted $L_p$-Sobolev spaces for closed extensions $\underline{A}_T$ of a differential operator $A$ on a conic manifold with boundary, subject to differential boundary conditions $T$. In general, these conditions ask for a particular pseudodifferential structure of the resolvent $(λ-\underline{A}_T)^{-1}$ in a sector $Λ\subset\mathbf{C}$. In case of the minimal extension they reduce to parameter-ellipticity of the boundary value problem $(A,T)$. Examples concern the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians.
In some previous papers we have defined and studied a 'magnetic' pseudodifferential calculus as a gauge covariant generalization of the Weyl calculus when a magnetic field is present. In this paper we extend the standard Fourier Integral Operators Theory to the case with a magnetic field, proving composition theorems, continuity theorems in 'magnetic' Sobolev spaces and Egorov type theorems. The main application is the representation of the evolution group generated by a 1-st order 'magnetic' pseudodifferential operator (in particular the relativistic Schrödinger operator with magnetic field) …
We study one-parameter families of pseudodifferential operators whose Weyl symbols are obtained by dilation and a smooth deformation of a symbol in a weighted Sjöstrand class. We show that their spectral edges are Lipschitz continuous functions of the dilation or deformation parameter. Suitably local estimates hold also for the edges of every spectral gap. These statements extend Bellissard's seminal results on the Lipschitz continuity of spectral edges for families of operators with periodic symbols to a large class of symbols with only mild regularity assumptions. The abstract results are us…
In this paper, we introduce a Weyl functional calculus $a \mapsto a(Q,P)$ for the position and momentum operators $Q$ and $P$ associated with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator $ L = -Δ+ x\cdot \nabla$, and give a simple criterion for restricted $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of operators in this functional calculus. The analysis of this non-commutative functional calculus is simpler than the analysis of the functional calculus of $L$. It allows us to recover, unify, and extend, old and new results concerning the boundedness of $\exp(-zL)$ as an operator from $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d,γ_α)$ to $L^q(\mathbb{R}^d…
