Let $Γ$ be a compact group acting on a smooth, compact manifold $M$, let $P \in ψ^m(M; E_0, E_1)$ be a $Γ$-invariant, classical pseudodifferential operator acting between sections of two equivariant vector bundles $E_i \to M$, $i = 0,1$, and let $α$ be an irreducible representation of the group $Γ$. Then $P$ induces a map $π_α(P) : H^s(M; E_0)_α\to H^{s-m}(M; E_1)_α$ between the $α$-isotypical components of the corresponding Sobolev spaces of sections. When $Γ$ is finite, we explicitly characterize the operators $P$ for which the map $π_α(P)$ is Fredholm in terms of the principal symbol of $P$ and the action of $Γ$ on the vector bundles $E_i$. When $Γ= \{1\}$, that is, when there is no group, our result extends the classical characterization of Fredholm (pseudo)differential operators on compact manifolds. The proof is based on a careful study of the symbol $C^*$-algebra and of the topology of its primitive ideal spectrum. We also obtain several results on the structure of the norm closure of the algebra of invariant pseudodifferential operators and their relation to induced representations. Whenever our results also hold for non-discrete groups, we prove them in this greater generality. As an illustration of the generality of our results, we provide some applications to Hodge theory and to index theory of singular quotient spaces.
In this paper, we derive, from a general Simonenko's local principle, Fredholm criteria for restriction to isotypical components. More precisely, we give a full proof, of the equivariant local principle for restriction to isotypical components of invariant pseudodifferential operators announced in \cite{BCLN2}. Furthermore, we extend this result by relaxing the hypothesis made in the preceding quoted paper.
Let $G$ be a compact Lie group acting smoothly on a smooth, compact manifold $M$, let $P \in ψ^m(M; E_0, E_1)$ be a $G$--invariant, classical pseudodifferential operator acting between sections of two vector bundles $E_i \to M$, $i = 0,1$, and let $α$ be an irreducible representation of the group $G$. Then $P$ induces a map $π_α(P) : H^s(M; E_0)_α\to H^{s-m}(M; E_1)_α$ between the $α$-isotypical components. We prove that the map $π_α(P)$ is Fredholm if, and only if, $P$ is {\em transversally $α$-elliptic}, a condition defined in terms of the principal symbol of $P$ and the action of $G$ on the…
Let X be a smooth compact manifold with boundary. For smooth foliations on the boundary of X admitting a `resolution' in terms of a fibration, we construct a pseudodifferential calculus generalizing the fibred cusp calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose. In particular, we introduce certain symbols leading to a simple description of the Fredholm operators inside the calculus. When the leaves of the fibration `resolving' the foliation are compact, we also obtain an index formula for Fredholm perturbations of Dirac-type operators. Along the way, we obtain a formula for the adiabatic limit of the eta inva…
Let $X$ be a smooth compact manifold with corners which has two embedded boundary hypersurfaces $\partial_0 X , \partial_1 X$, and a fiber bundle $ϕ:\partial_0 X \to Y$ is given. By using the method of blowing up, we define a pseudodifferential culculus $Ψ^* _{Φ,b} (X)$ generalizing the $Φ$-calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose and the (small) $b$-calculus of Melrose. We discuss the Fredholm condition of such operators and prove the relative index theorem. And as its application, the index theorem of "non-closed" $\mathbb{Z}/k$ - manifolds is proved.
We show that elliptic complexes of (pseudo)differential operators on smooth compact manifolds with boundary can always be complemented to a Fredholm problem by boundary conditions involving global pseudodifferential projections on the boundary (similarly as the spectral boundary conditions of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer for a single operator). We prove that boundary conditions without projections can be chosen if, and only if, the topological Atiyah-Bott obstruction vanishes. These results make use of a Fredholm theory for complexes of operators in algebras of generalized pseudodifferential oper…
Let $X$ be a compact manifold with boundary. Suppose that the boundary is fibred, $ϕ:\pa X\longrightarrow Y,$ and let $x\in\CI(X)$ be a boundary defining function. This data fixes the space of `fibred cusp' vector fields, consisting of those vector fields $V$ on $X$ satisfying $Vx=O(x^2)$ and which are tangent to the fibres of $ϕ;$ it is a Lie algebra and $\CI(X)$ module. This Lie algebra is quantized to the `small calculus' of pseudodifferential operators $\PsiF*(X).$ Mapping properties including boundedness, regularity, Fredholm condition and symbolic maps are discussed for this calculus. Th…
A C*algebra A generated by a class of zero-order classical pseudodifferential operator on a cylinder RxB, where B is a compact riemannian manifold, containing operators with periodic symbols, is considered. A description of the K-theory index map associated to the continuous extension to A of the principal-symbol map is given. That index map takes values in K_0 of the commutator ideal E of the algebra, which is isomorphic to Z^2. It maps the K_1-class of an operator invertible modulo E to the Fredholm indices of a pair of elliptic pseudodifferentail operators on SxB, where S denotes the circle…
The extended Heisenberg algebra for a contact manifold has a symbolic calculus that accommodates both Heisenberg pseudodifferential operators as well as classical pseudodifferential operators. We derive here a formula for the index of Fredholm operators in this extended calculus. This formula incorporates in a single expression the Atiyah-Singer formula for elliptic operators, as well as Boutet de Monvel's Toeplitz index formula.
We show that the existence of a Fredholm element of the zero calculus of pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold with boundary with a given elliptic symbol is determined, up to stability, by the vanishing of the Atiyah-Bott obstruction. It follows that, up to small deformations and stability, the same symbols have Fredholm realizations in the zero calculus, in the scattering calculus and in the transmission calculus of Boutet de Monvel.
One way to geometrically encode the singularities of a stratified pseudomanifold is to endow its interior with an iterated fibred cusp metric. For such a metric, we develop and study a pseudodifferential calculus generalizing the Φ-calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose. Our starting point is the observation, going back to Melrose, that a stratified pseudomanifold can be `resolved' into a manifold with fibred corners. This allows us to define pseudodifferential operators as conormal distributions on a suitably blown-up double space. Various symbol maps are introduced, leading to the notion of full ell…
For every connected manifold with corners we use a homology theory called conormal homology, defined in terms of faces and incidences and whose cycles correspond geometrically to corner's cycles. Its Euler characteristic (over the rationals, dimension of the total even space minus the dimension of the total odd space), $χ_{cn}:=χ_0-χ_1$, is given by the alternated sum of the number of (open) faces of a given codimension. The main result of the present paper is that for a compact connected manifold with corners $X$ given as a finite product of manifolds with corners of codimension less or equal…
We consider two calculi of pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with fibered boundary: Mazzeo's edge calculus, which has as local model the operators associated to products of closed manifolds with asymptotically hyperbolic spaces, and the phi calculus of Mazzeo and the second author, which is similarly modeled on products of closed manifolds with asymptotically Euclidean spaces. We construct an adiabatic calculus of operators interpolating between them, and use this to compute the `smooth' K-theory groups of the edge calculus, determine the existence of Fredholm quantizations of elliptic…
We consider the operator algebra generated by pseudodifferential operators on a closed smooth surface and shift operator induced by a Morse--Smale diffeomorphism of this surface. Elements in this algebra are considered as operators in the scale of Sobolev spaces and the aim of this paper is to describe how Fredholm property of a given operator depends on the Sobolev smoothness exponent $s$.
We define a class of boundary value problems on manifolds with fibered boundary. This class is in a certain sense a deformation between the classical boundary value problems and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer problems in subspaces. The boundary conditions in this theory are taken as elements of the C^*-algebra generated by pseudodifferential operators and families of pseudodifferential operators in the fibers. We prove the Fredholm property for elliptic boundary value problems. This class also contains nonlocal boundary value problems of math.KT/0108107. We compute a topological obstruction (similar…
We show that the computation of the Fredholm index of a fully elliptic pseudodifferential operator on an integrated Lie manifold can be reduced to the computation of the index of a Dirac operator, perturbed by a smoothing operator, canonically associated, via the so-called clutching map. To this end we adapt to our framework ideas coming from Baum-Douglas geometric $K$-homology and in particular we introduce a notion of geometric cycles, that can be categorized as a variant of the famous geometric $K$-homology groups, for the specific situation here. We also define a comparison map between thi…
For certain Dirac operators $ð_ϕ$ associated to a fibered boundary metric $g_ϕ$, we provide a pseudodifferential characterization of the limiting behavior of $(ð_ϕ+kγ)^{-1}$ as $k\searrow 0$, where $γ$ is a self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with $ð_ϕ$ and whose square is the identity. This yields in particular a pseudodifferential characterization of the low energy limit of the resolvent of $ð_ϕ^2$, generalizing a result of Guillarmou and Sher about the low energy limit of the resolvent of the Hodge Laplacian of an asymptotically conical metric. As an application, we use our result to give …
For a pseudodifferential operator $S$ of order 0 acting on sections of a vector bundle $B$ on a compact manifold $M$ without boundary, we associate a differential form of order dimension of $M$ acting on $C^\infty(M)\times C^\infty(M)$. This differential form $Ω_{n,S}$ is given in terms of the Wodzicki 1-density $\wres([S,f][S,h])$. In the particular case of an even dimensional, compact, conformal manifold without boundary, we study this differential form for the case $(B,S)=(\cH,F)$, that is, the Fredholm module associated by A. Connes to the manifold $M.$ We give its explicit expression in t…
A families index theorem in K-theory is given for the setting of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer of a family of Dirac operators with spectral boundary condition. This result is deduced from such a K-theory index theorem for the calculus of cusp, or more generally fibred cusp, pseudodifferential operators on the fibres (with boundary) of a fibration; a version of Poincare duality is also shown in this setting, identifying the stable Fredholm families with elements of a bivariant K-group.
We study realizations of pseudodifferential operators acting on sections of vector-bundles on a smooth, compact manifold with boundary, subject to conditions of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type. Ellipticity and Fredholm property, compositions, adjoints and self-adjointness of such realizations are discussed. We construct regular spectral triples $(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{H},\mathcal{D})$ for manifolds with boundary of arbitrary dimension, where $\mathcal{H}$ is the space of square integrable sections. Starting out from Dirac operators with APS-conditions, these triples are even in case of even dimension…
For three classes of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold with boundary which have `geometric K-theory', namely the `transmission algebra' introduced by Boutet de Monvel, the `zero algebra' introduced by Mazzeo and the `scattering algebra' from [MR95k:58168] we give explicit formulae for the Chern character of the index bundle in terms of the symbols (including normal operators at the boundary) of a Fredholm family of fibre operators. This involves appropriate descriptions, in each case, of the cohomology with compact supports in the interior of the total space of a vect…
We consider a Dirac-type operator $D_P$ on a vector bundle $V$ over a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with a nonempty boundary. The operator $D_P$ is specified by a boundary condition $P(u|_{\p M})=0$ where $P$ is a projector which may be a non-local, i.e. a pseudodifferential operator. We assume the existence of a chirality operator which decomposes $L^2(M, V)$ into two orthogonal subspaces $X_+ \oplus X_-$. Under certain conditions, the operator $D_P$ restricted to $X_+$ and $ X_-$ defines a pair of Fredholm operators which maps $X_+\to X_-$ and $X_-\to X_+$ correspondingly, giving rise …
Using recently introduced Debord-Skandalis Blup's groupoids we study index theory for a compact foliated manifold with boundary inducing a foliation in its boundary. For this we consider first a blup groupoid whose Lie algebroid has sections consisting of vector fields tangent to the leaves in the interior and tangent to the leaves of the foliation in the boundary. In particular the holonomy $b$-groupoid allows us to consider the appropriate pseudodifferential calculus and the appropriate index problems. We further use the blup groupoids as the one above, and in particular its functoriality pr…
