We use the BGG-correspondence to show that there are at most three possible Hilbert functions for smooth rational surfaces of degree 11 and sectional genus 11. Surfaces with one of these Hilbert functions have been classified by Popescu. The classification for a second one is done in this paper. For the third Hilbert function the classification is still open.
Let (X,L) be a polarized manifold of dimension n. In this paper, by using the ith sectional geometric genus and the ith Δ-genus, we will give a numerical characterization of (X,L) with K_{X}=-(n-i)L for the following cases (i) i=2, (ii) i=3 and n \geq 5, (iii) max{2, dim Bs|L|+2} \leq i \leq n-1.

Polarized rational surfaces $(X, \mathcal L)$ of sectional genus two ruled in conics are studied. When they are not minimal, they are described as the blow-up of $\mathbb F_1$ at some points lying on distinct fibers. Ampleness and very ampleness of $\mathcal L$ are studied in terms of their location. When $\mathcal L$ is very ample and there is a line contained in $X$ and transverse to the fibers, the conic fibrations $(X, \mathcal L)$ are classified and a related property concerned with the inflectional locus is discussed.
In our previous papers, we investigated a lower bound for the second sectional geometric genus $g_{2}(X,L)$ of $n$-dimensional polarized manifolds $(X,L)$ and by using these, we studied the dimension of global sections of $K_{X}+tL$ with $t\geq 2$. In this paper, we consider the case where $(X,L)$ is a quasi-polarized manifold. First we will prove $g_{2}(X,L)\geq h^{1}(\mathcal{O}_{X})$ for the following cases: (a) $n=3$, $κ(X)=-\infty$ and $κ(K_{X}+L)\geq 0$. (b) $n\geq 3$ and $κ(X)\geq 0$. Moreover, by using this inequality, we will study $h^{0}(K_{X}+tL)$ for the case where $(X,L)$ is a qua…
This paper is an attempt for the classification of polarized manifolds of sectional genus $g=3$ and dimension $n\geq 3$. As in the case of $g\leq 2$,which was classified by T.Fujita,we use Mori-Kawamata theory. The classification result of $g=3$ and $n=2$, which was obtained by H.Maeda,is also used essentially. Although our results are far from being complete, they are very similar to those in case $g=2$.
The aim of the paper is to provide a series of new examples of smooth surfaces in P^4, not of general type, in degrees varying from 12 up to 14, and to describe their geometry. By using mainly syzygies and liaison techniques, we construct the following families of surfaces: - minimal proper elliptic surfaces of degree 12 and sectional genus 13, - two types of non-minimal proper elliptic surfaces of degree 12 and sectional genus 14, - non-minimal K3 surfaces of degree 13 and sectional genus 16, and - non-minimal K3 surfaces of degree 14 and sectional genus 19.
We study the existence of Khovanskii-finite valuations for rational curves of arithmetic genus two. We provide a semi-explicit description of the locus of degree $n+2$ rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^n$ of arithmetic genus two that admit a Khovanskii-finite valuation. Furthermore, we describe an effective method for determining if a rational curve of arithmetic genus two defined over a number field admits a Khovanskii-finite valuation. This provides a criterion for deciding if such curves admit a toric degeneration. Finally, we show that rational curves with a single unibranched singularity are…
We compute the rational cohomology of the moduli space of trigonal curves of genus 5. We do this by considering their natural embedding in the first Hirzebruch surface and by using Gorinov-Vassiliev's method.
In this paper we look for necessary and sufficient conditions for a genus one fibration to have rational curves. We show that a projective variety with log terminal singularities that admits a relatively minimal genus one fibration $X\rightarrow B$ does contain vertical rational curves if and only if it not isomorphic to a finite étale quotient of a product $\tilde{B}\times E$ over $B$. Many sufficient conditions for the existence of rational curves in a variety that admits a genus one fibration are proved in this paper.
We consider relatively minimal fibrations of curves of genus two on rational surfaces whose Picard numbers are not maximal. By birational morphisms, such fibred surfaces are interpreted as pencils of plane curves. We show that only four are canonical, among a variety of possible models. For each canonical pencil, we give an example with trivial Mordell-Weil group.
In many situations, the monodromy group of enumerative problems will be the full symmetric group. In this paper, we study a similar phenomenon on the rational curves in $|\mathcal{O}(1)|$ on a generic K3 surface of fixed genus over $\mathbb{C}$ as the K3 surface varies. We prove that when the K3 surface has genus $g$, $1\leq g\leq 3$, the monodromy group is the full symmetric group.
By the technique of 3-fold Mori theory, we prove that the moduli space whose general point parameterizes a couple of a smooth curve of genus 4 and a halfcanonical divisor with vanishing global section is rational.
The aim of the present paper is to prove the rationality of the universal family of polarized $ K3 $ surfaces of degree 14. This is achieved by identifying it with the moduli space of cubic fourfolds plus the data of a quartic scroll. The last moduli space is finally proved to be rational since it has a natural structure of $\mathbb P^n$-bundle over a $ k $-stably rational variety with $k \leq n$.
Let S be a general complex Nikulin surface of genus 8, a geometric construction of S is given as follows. Consider a smooth 3-fold linear section T of the Grassmannian G(1,4) and the Hilbert scheme of rational normal sextic curves of T. In it consider the special family of sextics A which are also contained in the congruence of bisecant lines to a rational normal quartic curve of P^4. We show that S is biregular to a quadratic section of T containing a sextic A. In particular A admits a 1-dimensional family of bisecant lines contained in G(1,4) and 8 of them are in S. This explicit constructio…
We give a combinatorial description of the rational cohomology of the moduli spaces of pointed genus 1 curves with $n$ marked points and level $N$ structures. More precisely, we explicitly describe the $E_2$ term of the Leray spectral sequence of the forgetful mapping $\EuScript{M}_{1,n}(N)\to\EuScript{M}_{1,1}(N)$ and show that the result is isomorphic to the rational cohomology of $\EuScript{M}_{1,n}(N)$ as a rational mixed Hodge structure equipped with an action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. The classical moduli space $\EuScript{M}_{1,n}$ is the particular case N=1.
Given a smooth curve of genus 2 embedded in P^(d-2) with a complete linear system of degree d>=6, we list all types of rational normal scrolls arising from linear systems g^1_2 and g^1_3 on C. Furthermore, we give a description of the ideal of such a curve of genus 2 embedded in P^(d-2) as a sum of the ideal of the two-dimensional scroll defined by the unique g^1_2 on C and the ideal of a three-dimensional scroll arising from a g^1_3 on C and not containing the scroll defined by the g^1_2 on C.
Let $\mathfrak B_g$ denote the moduli space of primitively polarized $K3$ surfaces $(S,H)$ of genus $g$ over $\mathbb C$. It is well-known that $\mathfrak B_g$ is irreducible and that there are only finitely many rational curves in $|H|$ for any primitively polarized $K3$ surface $(S,H)$. So we can ask the question of finding the monodromy group of such curves. The case of $g=2$ essentially follows from the results of Harris \cite{Ha} to be the full symmetric group $S_{324}$, here we solve the case $g=3$ and $4$.
In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron--Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibr…
We build a database of genus 2 curves defined over $\mathbb Q$ which contains all curves with minimal absolute height $h \leq 5$, all curves with moduli height $\mathfrak h \leq 20$, and all curves with extra automorphisms in standard form $y^2=f(x^2)$ defined over $\mathbb Q$ with height $h \leq 101$. For each isomorphism class in the database, an equation over its minimal field of definition is provided, the automorphism group of the curve, Clebsch and Igusa invariants. The distribution of rational points in the moduli space $\mathcal M_2$ for which the field of moduli is a field of definiti…
Refereed version to appear in Michigan Mathematical Journal. A mistake in the last section of the previous version has been corrected. The new title exactly describes the main result obtained. Building on the geometry of cubic surfaces and on a theorem of Dolgachev, the rationality of the moduli space R mentioned in the title is proved. Let M be the moduli space of 6 points in the plane, modulo the natural involution induced by double-six configurations on cubic surfaces. It is proved that R is birational to a tower of locally trivial projective bundles ending onto M. The rationality of R then…
We produce new explicit examples of genus-2 curves over the rational numbers whose Jacobian varieties have rational torsion points of large order. In particular, we produce a family of genus-2 curves over Q whose Jacobians have a rational point of order 48, parametrized by a rank-2 elliptic curve over Q, and we exhibit a single genus-2 curve over Q whose Jacobian has a rational point of order 70, the largest order known. We also give new examples of genus-2 Jacobians with rational points of order 27, 28, and 39. Most of our examples are produced by `gluing' two elliptic curves together along t…
We give a construction of singular curves with many rational points over finite fields. This construction enables us to prove some results on the maximum number of rational points on an absolutely irreducible projective algebraic curve defined over Fq of geometric genus g and arithmetic genus $π$.
Extending the method of Part I (alg-geom/9704004), we give recursive formulae for: the genus-1 Severi degree (formula first found by Getzler), the degree of the variety of 1-cuspidal curves of genus 0 or 1, and the linear (sectional) geometric genus of the genus-0 and genus-1 Severi varieties. The proof is short and elementary.
We compute the rational cohomology ring of \bar R_2, the (compactified) moduli space of Prym curves of genus 2. We also recompute the rational cohomology ring of \bar S_2, the moduli space of spin curves of genus 2, thereby correcting some errors made in an article by G. Bini and C. Fontanari, containing a computation of the same ring.
We consider a rational surface with a relatively minimal fibration. Picard number of a such fibred surface is bounded in terms of the genus of a general fibre. When Picard number is the maximum for any given genus, we characterize a such fibred surface whose Mordell-Weil group is trivial by singular fibres. Furthermore, we describe the defining equation explicitly.
We address the question concerning the birational geometry of the strata of holomorphic and quadratic differentials. We show strata of holomorphic and quadratic differentials to be uniruled in small genus by constructing rational curves via pencils on K3 and del Pezzo surfaces respectively. Restricting to genus $3\leq g\leq6$, we construct projective bundles over a rational varieties that dominate the holomorphic strata with length at most $g-1$, hence showing in addition that these strata are unirational.
We describe a method that allows, under some hypotheses, to compute all the rational points of some genus 5 curves defined over a number field. This method is used to solve some arithmetic problems that remained open.
Using the isomorphism between the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of genus 14 and the moduli space of special cubic fourfolds of discriminant 26, we establish the rationality of the universal K3 surface of genus 14. Precisely, we show that the universal K3 surface of genus 14 is a projective bundle over a certain moduli space of nodal scrolls in P^5, whose rationality we prove using a degenerate version of Mukai's structure theorem for curves of genus 8.
In this paper we classify non-symplectic automorphisms of order 8 on complex K3 surfaces in case that the fourth power of the automorphism has only rational curves in its fixed locus. We show that the fixed locus is the disjoint union of a rational curve and 10 isolated points or it consists in 4 isolated fixed points. We give examples corresponding to the case with a rational curve in the fixed locus and to the case with only isolated points in the fixed locus.
We prove that the Poincare' polynomial of the moduli space of smooth genus 4 curves is 1+t^2+t^4+t^5. We show this by producing a stratification of the space, such that all strata are geometric quotients of complements of discriminants.
We study projective surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ (with $r \geq 5$) of maximal sectional regularity and degree $d > r$, hence surfaces for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(C)$ of a general hyperplane section curve $C = X \cap \mathbb{P}^{r-1}$ takes the maximally possible value $d-r+3$. We show that each of these surfaces is either a cone over a curve $C \subset \mathbb{P}^{r-1}$ of maximal regularity or else a birational outer linear projection of a smooth rational surface scroll $\widetilde{X} \subset \mathbb{P}^{d+1}$. We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of th…
We show that for all finite fields F_q, there exists a curve C over F_q of genus 3 such that the number of rational points on C is within 3 of the Serre-Weil upper or lower bound. For some q, we also obtain improvements on the upper bound for the number of rational points on a genus 3 curve over F_q.
The aim of this paper is to present two different constructions of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with degree 12 and sectional genus 13. In particular, we establish the existences of five different families of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with the prescribed invariants.
We investigate the universal Severi variety of rational curves on K3 surfaces, which parametrises irreducible rational curves in a fixed class on varying K3 surfaces of fixed genus. We investigate the conjecuted irreducibility of this space in the case of primitive classes using the deformation theory of stable maps and obtain partial results. In an appendix we give a short proof of the irreducibility of universal Severi varieties of high genus curves on K3 surfaces.
We give an upper bound for the degree of rational curves in a family that covers a given birational ruled surface in projective space. The upper bound is stated in terms of the degree, sectional genus and arithmetic genus of the surface. We introduce an algorithm for constructing examples where the upper bound is tight. As an application of our methods we improve an inequality on lattice polygons.
We compute rational points on genus $3$ odd degree hyperelliptic curves $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ that have Jacobians of Mordell-Weil rank $0$. The computation applies the Chabauty-Coleman method to find the zero set of a certain system of $p$-adic integrals, which is known to be finite and include the set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$. We implemented an algorithm in Sage to carry out the Chabauty-Coleman method on a database of $5870$ curves.
In this paper we study bielliptic curves of genus 3 defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ and the intersection of the moduli space $\M_3^b$ of such curves with the hyperelliptic moduli $\H_3$. Such intersection $§$ is an irreducible, 3-dimensional, rational algebraic variety. We determine the equation of this space in terms of the $Gl(2, k)$-invariants of binary octavics as defined in \cite{hyp_mod_3} and find a birational parametrization of $§$. We also compute all possible subloci of curves for all possible automorphism group $G$. Moreover, for every rational moduli point $\p \in §$…
By associating to a curve C of genus g=2k and a pencil of degree d=k+1 the so-called trace curve (resp. the reduced trace curve) we define a rational map from the Hurwitz space of admissible covers of genus g=2k and degree d=k+1 to a moduli space of stable curves. We study the induced map between the divisor class groups of these moduli spaces of curves.
We give a complete list of rational functions $A$ such that the genus $g$ of the Galois closure of $\mathbb C(z)/\mathbb C(A)$ equals zero. We also provide a geometric description of $A$ for which $g=1.$
For affine plane curves defined over the rationals of genus at least two, we show that a decision algorithm for the existence of solutions also yields a search algorithm for all solutions.
One of the big questions in the area of curves over finite fields concerns the distribution of the numbers of points: Which numbers occur as the number of points on a curve of genus $g$? The same question can be asked of various subclasses of curves. In this article we classify the possibilities for the number of points on genus 4 hyperelliptic supersingular curves over finite fields of order $2^n$, $n$ odd.
The number $N_9(5)$, the maximal number of $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points on curves over $\mathbb{F}_9$ of genus $5$ is unknown, but it is known that $32 \le N_9(5)\le 35$. In this paper, we enumerate hyperelliptic curves and trigonal curves over $\mathbb{F}_3$ which have many $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points (and $\mathbb{F}_3$-rational points), especially the maximal number of $\mathbb{F}_9$-rational points of those curves is $30$. Kudo-Harashita studied the nonhyperelliptic and nontrigonal case, where they found a new example of curves (over $\mathbb{F}_3$) of genus five which attains $32$ and…
We describe a new method of constructing rational surfaces with given invariants in P^4 and present a family of degree 11 rational surfaces of sectional genus 11 with 2 six-secants that we found with this method.
Given a relatively minimal fibration $f: S \to \Bbb P^1$ on a rational surface $S$ with general fiber $C$ of genus $g$, we investigate under what conditions the inequality $6(g-1)\le K_f^2$ occurs, where $K_f$ is the canonical relative sheaf of $f$. We give sufficient conditions for having such inequality, depending on the genus and gonality of $C$ and the number of certain exceptional curves on $S$. We illustrate how these results can be used for constructing fibrations with the desired property. For fibrations of genus $11\le g\le 49$ we prove the inequality: $$ 6(g-1) +4 -4\sqrt g \le K_f^2…
We characterize transversality, non-transversality properties on the moduli space of genus 0 stable maps to a rational projective surface. If a target space is equipped with a real structure, i.e, anti-holomorphic involution, then the results have real enumerative applications. Firstly, we can define a real version of Gromov-Witten invariants. Secondly, we can prove the invariance of Welschinger's invariant in algebraic geometric category.
Fix integers $r,d,s,π$ with $r\geq 4$, $d\gg s$, $r-1\leq s \leq 2r-4$, and $π\geq 0$. Refining classical results for the genus of a projective curve, we exhibit a sharp upper bound for the arithmetic genus $p_a(C)$ of an integral projective curve $C\subset {\mathbb{P}^r}$ of degree $d$, assuming that $C$ is not contained in any surface of degree $<s$, and not contained in any surface of degree $s$ with sectional genus $> π$. Next we discuss other types of bound for $p_a(C)$, involving conditions on the entire Hilbert polynomial of the integral surfaces on which $C$ may lie.
We consider K3 surfaces which are double cover of rational elliptic surfaces. The former are endowed with a natural elliptic fibration, which is induced by the latter. There are also other elliptic fibrations on such K3 surfaces, which are necessarily induced by special linear systems on the rational elliptic surfaces. We describe these linear systems. In particular, we observe that every conic bundle on the rational surface induces a genus 1 fibration on the K3 surface and we classify the singular fibers of the genus 1 fibration on the K3 surface it terms of singular fibers and special curves…
We study K3 surfaces over a number field $k$ which are double covers of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. We provide a list of all elliptic fibrations on certain K3 surfaces together with the degree of a field extension over which each genus one fibration is defined and admits a section. We show that the latter depends, in general, on the action of the cover involution on the fibers of the genus 1 fibration.
The paper discusses the classification of surfaces of degree 10 and sectional genus 9 and 10. The surfaces of degree at most 9 are described through classical work dating from the last century up to recent years, while surfaces of degree 10 and other sectional genera are studied elsewhere. We use relations between multisecants, linear systems, syzygies and linkage to describe the geometry of each surface. We want in fact to stress the importance of multisecants and syzygies for the study of these surfaces. Adjunction, which provided efficient arguments for the classification of surfaces of sma…
A singular curve over a non-perfect field K may not have a smooth model over K. Those are said to "change genus". If K is a global field of positive characteristic and C/K a curve that change genus, then C(K) is known to be finite. The purpose of this note is to give examples of curves with fixed relative genus, defined over K for which #C(K) is arbitrarily large. The motivation for considering this problem comes from the work of Caporaso et al. [CHM], where they show that a conjecture of Lang implies that, for a number field K, #C(K) can be bounded in terms of g and K only for all curves C/K …
