We give a proof of the irrationality of the $p$-adic zeta-values $ζ_p(k)$ for $p=2,3$ and $k=2,3$. Such results were recently obtained by F.Calegari as an application of overconvergent $p$-adic modular forms. In this paper we present an approach using classical continued fractions discovered by Stieltjes. In addition we show irrationality of some other $p$-adic $L$-series values, and values of the $p$-adic Hurwitz zeta-function.
We prove that the sum of the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\, p^{v_p(n!)}$ is a $p$-adic irrational for all primes $p$, where $v_p(n!)$ denotes the exponent of the highest power of $p$ dividing $n!$.
Following Apery's proof of the irrationality of zeta(3), Beukers found an elegant reinterpretation of Apery's arguments using modular forms. We show how Beukers arguments can be adapted to a p-adic setting. In this context, certain functional equations arising from Eichler integrals are replaced by the notion of overconvergent p-adic modular forms, and the periods themselves arise not as coefficients of period polynomials but as constant terms of p-adic Eisenstein series. We prove that the analogue of zeta(3) is irrational for p = 2 and 3, as well as the 2-adic analogue of Catalan's constant.
We show how the theory of linear forms in two logarithms allows one to get effective irrationality measures for $n$-th roots of rational numbers ${a \over b}$, when $a$ is very close to $b$. We give a $p$-adic analogue of this result under the assumption that $a$ is $p$-adically very close to $b$, that is, that a large power of $p$ divides $a-b$. As an application, we solve completely certain families of Thue-Mahler equations. Our results illustrate, admittedly in a very special situation, the strength of the known estimates for linear forms in logarithms.
The knowledge on irrationality of p-adic zeta values has recently progressed. The irrationality of zeta_2(2), ζ_2(3) and of a few other p-adic series of Dirichlet was obtained by F. Calegari. F. Beukers gave a more elementary proof of this result. In parallel, T. Rivoal has just obtained, in the complex case, some Pade approximants of Lerch functions. It is this work which, transposed to C_p, enables us to obtain results of irrationality and linear independence.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $\mathbb{C}_p$ the completion of algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Let $K$ be an algebraic number field. We fix an embedding $ι_p:\overline{\mathbb{Q}}\hookrightarrow \mathbb{C}_p$ and denote $K_p$ the completion of $K$ with respect to the embedding $ι_p$. Let $g(z)\in K[[z]]$ and denote by $\mathcal{M}(g)(z)\in \tfrac{1}{z}K\left[\left[\tfrac{1}{z}\right]\right]$ the formal Mellin transform of $g(z)$. In this article, we prove that if $\mathcal{M}(g)(z)$ has a good Padé approximation, the special values $\mathcal{M}(g)(α)$ are convergent in $K_p$ and irrationa…
A simple geometric construction on the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ of curves of genus $0$ with $n$ ordered marked points is described which gives a common framework for many irrationality proofs for zeta values. This construction yields Apéry's approximations to $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, and for larger $n$, an infinite family of small linear forms in multiple zeta values with an interesting algebraic structure. It also contains a generalisation of the linear forms used by Ball and Rivoal to prove that infinitely many odd zeta values are irrational.
We prove that the formula giving the exact value of the irrationality exponent of regular continued fractions remains valid for semi-regular continued fractions satisfyiong certain conditions.
We introduce a one-parameter family of series associated to the Riemann $ζ$-function and prove that the values of the elements of this family at integers are linearly independent over the rationals for almost all values of the parameter, where almost all is with respect to any sufficiently nice measure. We also give similar results for the Euler--Mascheroni constant, for $\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{1}{n^n}$ and for $\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{1}{n! +1}$. Finally, specialising the criteria used, we give some new criteria for the irrationality of $ζ(k)$, the Euler--Mascheroni constant and the latter t…
In this paper we follow the approach of Bertrand-Beukers (and of later work of Bertrand), based on differential Galois theory, to prove a very general version of Shidlovsky's lemma that applies to Pad{é} approximation problems at several points, both at functional and numerical levels (i.e., before and after evaluating at a specific point). This allows us to obtain a new proof of the Ball-Rivoal theorem on irrationality of infinitely many values of Riemann zeta function at odd integers, inspired by the proof of the Siegel-Shidlovsky theorem on values of E-functions: Shidlovsky's lemma is used …
A unified proof of the irrationality of the special values L(n, X), n > 1 an integer, of the beta L-function is put forward in this note. The first case of n = 2 seems to confirm that the Catalan constant L(2, X) is an irrational number.
For different values of $γ\geq 0$, analysis of the end behavior of the sequence $a_n = \cos (n)^{n^γ}$ yields a strong connection to the irrationality measure of $π$. We show that if $\limsup |\cos n|^{n^2} \neq 1$, then the irrationality measure of $π$ is exactly 2. We also give some numerical evidence to support the conjecture that $μ(π)=2$, based on the appearance of some startling subsequences of $\cos(n)^n$.
We use recurrences of integrals to give new and elementary proofs of the irrationality of pi, tan(r) for all nonzero rational r, and cos(r) for all nonzero rational r^2. Immediate consequences to other values of the elementary transcendental functions are also discussed.
In a recent paper with Sprang and Zudilin, the following result was proved: if $a$ is large enough in terms of $\varepsilon>0$, then at least $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log a}{\log \log a}}$ values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers between $3$ and $a$ are irrational. This improves on the Ball-Rivoal theorem, that provides only $\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\log 2} \log a$ such irrational values -- but with a stronger property: they are linearly independent over the rationals. In the present paper we generalize this recent result to both $L$-functions of Dirichlet characters and Hurwitz zeta…
The arithmetic nature of values of some functions of a single variable, particularly, $\sin{z}$, $\cos{z}$, $\sinh{z}$, $\cosh{z}$, $e^z$, and $\ln{z}$, is a relevant topic in number theory. For instance, all those functions return transcendental values for all non-zero algebraic values of $z$ ($z \ne 1$ in the case of $\ln{z}$). On the other hand, not even an irrationality proof is known for some numbers like $\,e^e$, $\,π^e$, $\,π^π$, $\,\lnπ$, $\,π+ e\,$ and $\,π\, e$, though it is well-known that at least one of the last two numbers is irrational. In this note, I first derive a more genera…
We exhibit geometric conditions on a family of toric hypersurfaces under which the value of a canonical normal function at a point of maximal unipotent monodromy is irrational.
We present several results on the number of irrational and linear independent values among $ζ(s),ζ(s+2),...,ζ(s+2n)$, where $s>2$ is an odd integer and $n>0$ is an integer. The main tool in our proofs is a certain generalization of Rivoal's construction (math.NT/0008051, math.NT/0104221).
We have calculated numerically geometrical means of the denominators of the continued fraction approximations to the Brun constant B2. We get values close to the Khinchin constant. Next we calculated the n-th square roots of the denominators of the n-th convergents of these continued fractions obtaining values close to the Khinchin-Levy constant. These two results suggests that B2 is irrational, supporting the common believe that there is an infinity of twins.
We present a new proof of the irrationality of values of the series $T_q(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty z^nq^{-n(n-1)/2}$ in both qualitative and quantitative forms. The proof is based on a hypergeometric construction of rational approximations to $T_q(z)$.
The Tijdeman-Zagier conjecture states no integer solution exists for $A^X+B^Y=C^Z$ with positive integer bases and integer exponents greater than 2 unless gcd$(A,B,C)>1$. Any set of values that satisfy the conjecture correspond to a lattice point on a Cartesian graph which subtends a line in multi-dimensional space with the origin. Properties of the slopes of these lines in each plane are established as a function of coprimality of terms, such as irrationality, which enable us to explicitly prove the conjecture by contradiction.
We relate non-critical special values $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to algebraic Hecke characters of an imaginary quadratic number field with class number one to $p$-adic Coleman function called the $p$-adic Eisenstein-Kronecker series, when the conductors of the algebraic Hecke characters are divisible by $p$.
This work is a study of $p$-adic multiple zeta values at roots of unity ($p$MZV$μ_{N}$'s), the $p$-adic periods of the crystalline pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $(\mathbb{P}^{1} - \{0,μ_{N},\infty\})/ \mathbb{F}_{q}$. The main tool is new objects which we call $p$-adic pro-unipotent harmonic actions. In this part IV we define and study $p$-adic analogues of some elementary complex analytic functions which interpolate multiple zeta values at roots of unity such as the multiple zeta functions. The indices of $p$MZV$μ_{N}$'s involve sequences of positive integers ; in this IV-1, by consid…
The article is dedicated to the memory of George Voronoi. It is concerned with ($p$-adic) $L$-functions (in partially ($p$-adic) zeta functions) and cyclotomic ($p$-adic) (multiple) zeta values. The beginning of the article contains a short summary of the results on the Bernoulli numbers associated with the studies of George Voronoi. Results on multiple zeta values have presented by D. Zagier, by P. Deligne and A.Goncharov, by A. Goncharov, by F. Brown, by C. Glanois and others. S. Ünver have investigated p-adic multiple zeta values in the depth two. Tannakian interpretation of p-adic multiple…
We study a refinement of the symmetric multiple zeta value, called the $t$-adic symmetric multiple zeta value, by considering its finite truncation. More precisely, two kinds of regularizations (harmonic and shuffle) give two kinds of the $t$-adic symmetric multiple zeta values, thus we introduce two kinds of truncations correspondingly. Then we show that our truncations tend to the corresponding $t$-adic symmetric multiple zeta values, and satisfy the harmonic and shuffle relations, respectively. This gives a new proof of the double shuffle relations for $t$-adic symmetric multiple zeta value…
We prove two transformations for the $p$-adic hypergeometric functions which can be described as $p$-adic analogues of a Euler's transformation and a transformation of Clausen. We first evaluate certain character sums, and then relate them to the $p$-adic hypergeometric functions to deduce the transformations. We use a character sum identity proved by Ahlgren, Ono, and Penniston to deduce the $p$-adic Clausen's transformation. We also deduce special values of certain $p$-adic hypergeometric functions.
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field, with associated quadratic character $α$. We construct an analytic $p$-adic $L$-function interpolating the twisted adjoint $L$-values $L(1, \mathrm{ad}(f) \otimes α)$ as $f$ varies in a Hida family; these special values are non-critical in the sense of Deligne. Our approach is based on Greenberg--Stevens' idea of $Λ$-adic modular symbols, which considers cohomology with values in a space of $p$-adic measures.
In this paper we give a general upper bound for the irrationality exponent of algebraic Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field. Our proof is based on a method introduced in a different framework by Adamczewski and Cassaigne. It makes use of automata theory and, in our context, of a classical theorem due to Christol. We then introduce a new approach which allows us to strongly improve this general bound in many cases. As an illustration, we give few examples of algebraic Laurent series for which we are able to compute the exact value of the irrationality exponent.
The fact that the double zeta values at n and m can be written as a sum of products of two zeta values and of zeta value at m+n, whenever n+m is odd is due to Euler. We shall show a weak version of this result for the Galois l-adic realization.
This paper pursues positive characteristic analogues of the results of Furusho, Komori, Matsumoto and Tsumura on $p$-adic multiple $L$-functions. We consider $\infty$-adic and $v$-adic multiple zeta functions concerned by Anglès, Ngo Dac and Tavares Ribeiro. Our main results in this paper consist of: (1) integral expressions of special values of $\infty$-adic multiple zeta functions, (2) integral expression of $v$-adic multiple zeta functions themselves similar to those of $p$-adic multiple $L$-functions, (3) Kummer-type congruence for the special values of $v$-adic multiple zeta functions at …
We construct $p$-adic multiple $L$-functions in several variables, which are generalizations of the classical Kubota-Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-functions, by using a specific $p$-adic measure. Our construction is from the $p$-adic analytic side of view, and we establish various fundamental properties of these functions.
We define and apply a method to study the non-vanishing of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values. We prove the non-vanishing of certain cyclotomic multiple harmonic sums, and, via a formula proved in another paper, which expresses a cyclotomic multiple harmonic sums as an infinite sum of products of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values, this implies the non-vanishing of certain $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values.
We prove hypergeometric type summation identities for a function defined in terms of quotients of the $p$-adic gamma function by counting points on certain families of hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We also find certain special values of that function.
We construct a meromorphic function on the eigencurve that interpolates a square root of the ratio of the central values of two quadratic twists of the $L$-function at classical points.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $\mathbb{F}_p$ be the finite field with $p$ elements. This paper focuses on the study of values of a generic family of hypergeometric functions in the $p$-adic setting which we denote by ${_{3n-1}G_{3n-1}}(p, t),$ where $n\geq1$ and $t\in\mathbb{F}_p$. These values are expressed in terms of numbers of zeros of certain polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_p$. These results lead to certain $p$-adic analogues of classical hypergeometric identities. Namely, we obtain $p$-adic analogues of particular cases of a Gauss' theorem and a Kummer's theorem. Moreover, we examine the zero…
Donnay, Garcia and Rouse classified nonsingular quadratic forms $Q$ with integral coefficients and prime numbers $p$ such that the set of quotients of values of $Q$ attained for integer arguments is dense in the field of $p$-adic numbers. The aim of this note is to give another proof of this classification.
We show that the special values at tuples of positive integers of the $p$-adic multiple $L$-function introduced by the first-named author et al. can be expressed in terms of the cyclotomic multiple harmonic values introduced by the second-named author.
We classify all the zeros and non-zero values of a family of hypergeometric series in the $p$-adic setting. These values of hypergeometric series in the $p$-adic setting lead to transformations of hypergeometric series in the $p$-adic setting which can be described as $p$-adic analogues of Kummer's and Pfaff's linear transformations on classical hypergeometric series. We also evaluate certain summation identities for hypergeometric series in the $p$-adic setting as well as Gaussian hypergeometric series.
Let $E_{-D}$ be the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3+Dx$ defined over $K=\mathbb{Q}(i)$ for $D\in K$ which is coprime to 2. In this paper, we give a lower bound for the 2-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the central value of Hecke $L$-function associated to $E_{-D}$.
We prove new congruences between special values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$ over arbitrary number fields. This allows us to control the behavior of $p$-adic $L$-functions under Tate twists and to prove the existence of non-abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions for Hida families on $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$. As an application, we prove strong non-vanishing results for central $L$-values: We give sufficient local conditions for twisted central Rankin-Selberg $L$-values to be generically non-zero.
We study a relation between two refinements of the rank one abelian Gross-Stark conjecture: For a suitable abelian extension $H/F$ of number fields, a Gross-Stark unit is defined as a $p$-unit of $H$ satisfying some proporties. Let $τ\in \mathrm{Gal}(H/F)$. Yoshida and the author constructed the symbol $Y_p(τ)$ by using $p$-adic $\log$ multiple gamma functions, and conjectured that the $\log_p$ of a Gross-Stark unit can be expressed by $Y_p(τ)$. Dasgupta constructed the symbol $u_T(τ)$ by using the $p$-adic multiplicative integration, and conjectured that a Gross-Stark unit can be expressed by…
We develop the topological polylogarithm which provides an integral version of Nori's Eisenstein cohomology classes for $GL_n(\mathbf{Z})$ and yields classes with values in an Iwasawa algebra. This implies directly the integrality properties of special values of $L$-functions of totally real fields and a construction of the associated $p$-adic $L$-function. Using a result of Graf, we also apply this to prove some integrality and $p$-adic interpolation results for the Eisenstein cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties.
Let $A \rightarrow S$ be an abelian scheme over a $p$-adic field, and let $s \colon S \rightarrow A$ be a section. We study the torsion locus $\bigcup \limits_{n \geq 1} s^{-1}(A[n])$ on $S$, and we show that torsion points on $S$ of different orders stay away from each other.
