Consider the locus of smooth curves of genus g and p-rank f defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p. It is an open problem to classify which group schemes occur as the p-torsion of the Jacobians of these curves for f < g-1. We prove that the generic point of this locus has a-number 1 when f=g-2 and f=g-3. We include other results for curves with p-rank g-2 and g-3. For example, we show that the generic hyperelliptic curve with p-rank g-2 has a-number 1 and that the locus of curves with p-rank g-2 and a-number 2 is non-empty with codimension 3 in M_g. The proofs use degeneration to the boundary of M_g.
We establish a connection between torsion packets on curves of genus $2$ and pairs of elliptic curves realized as double covers of the projective line $\mathbb{P}_{x}^{1}$ that have many common torsion $x$-coordinates. This can be used to show that the set of common torsion $x$-coordinates has size at least $22$ infinitely often and has $34$ elements in some cases. We also explain how we obtained the current record example of a hyperelliptic torsion packet on a genus $2$ curve.
For the elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ found by Kihara, with torsion group $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$ and rank $\geq 5$, which is the current record for the rank of such curves, by using a suitable injective specialization, we determine exactly the rank and generators of $E(\mathbb{Q}(t))$.
For any number field, we prove that there exists an elliptic curve defined over this field such that its Shafarevich-Tate group has a nontrivial 2-torsion subgroup.
We prove that in the function field setting, $\ell$-torsion in the class groups of quadratic fields can be arbitrarily large. In fact, we explicitly produce a family whose $\ell$-rank growth matches the growth in the setting of genus theory, which might be best possible. We do this by specifically focusing on the Artin-Schreir curves $y^2=x^q-x$.
In this paper, we study the finiteness problem of torsion points on an elliptic curve whose coordinates satisfy some multiplicative dependence relations. In particular, we prove that on an elliptic curve defined over a number field there are only finitely many torsion points whose coordinates are multiplicatively dependent. Moreover, we produce an effective result when the elliptic curve is defined over the rational numbers or has complex multiplication.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over Q. We study the relationship between the torsion subgroup E(Q)_tors and the torsion subgroup E(K)_tors, where K is a quadratic number field.
We outline the proof of a theorem of M. Baker and A. Tamagawa that gives a complete description of the torsion points on a modular curve embedded in its Jacobian using the notion of an `almost rational torsion point.'
Let $A$ be an elliptic curve over $\Q$ of square free conductor $N$. We prove that if $A$ has a rational torsion point of prime order $r$ such that $r$ does not divide $6N$, then $r$ divides the order of the cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(N)$.
The purpose of this paper is to give a "down--to--earth" proof of the well--known fact that a randomly chosen elliptic curve over the rationals is most likely to have trivial torsion.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over Q and let G = E(Q)_tors be the associated torsion subgroup. We study, for a given G, which possible groups G <= H could appear such that H=E(K)_tors, for [K:Q]=4 and H is one of the possible torsion structures that occur infinitely often as torsion structures of elliptic curves defined over quartic number fields.
Let E be an elliptic curve with additive reduction over the p-adic numbers, and let G be the group of p-adic points on E that have good reduction. This paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for G to contain non-trivial p-torsion.
This article is a contribution to the project of classifying the torsion growth of elliptic curve upon base-change. In this article we treat the case of elliptic curve defined over the rationals with complex multiplication. For this particular case, we give a description of the possible torsion growth over cubic fields and a completely explicit description of this growth in terms of some invariants attached to a given elliptic curve.
In a series of papers we classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves base-extended to number fields of a fixed degree. In this paper we turn our attention to the question of how the torsion of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over the rationals grows over quadratic fields. We go further and we give an explicit characterization of the quadratic fields where the torsion grows in terms of some invariants attached to the curve.
Mazur's theorem states that there are exactly 15 possibilities for the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve over the rational numbers. We determine how often each of these groups actually occurs. Precisely, if $G$ is one of these 15 groups, we show that the number of elliptic curves up to height $X$ whose torsion subgroup is isomorphic to $G$ is on the order of $X^{1/d}$, for some number $d=d(G)$ which we compute.
Let K denote the quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ where d=$-1$ or $-3$. Let E be an elliptic curve defined over K. In this paper, we analyze the torsion subgroups of E in the maximal elementary abelian $2$-extension of $K$.
Let $p$ be a prime and $K$ a number field of degree $p$. We count the number of elliptic curves, up to $\bar{K}$-isomorphism, having a prescribed property, where this property is either that the curve contains a fixed torsion group as a subgroup, or that it has an isogeny of prescribed degree.
Given an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with torsion subgroup $G = E(\mathbb{Q})_{\rm tors}$ we study what groups (up to isomorphism) can occur as the torsion subgroup of $E$ base-extended to $K$, a degree 6 extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We also determine which groups $H = E(K)_{\rm tors}$ can occur infinitely often and which ones occur for only finitely many curves. This article is a first step towards a complete classification of torsion growth of over sextic fields.
Although it is not known which groups can appear as torsion groups of elliptic curves over cubic number fields, it is known which groups can appear for infinitely many non-isomorphic curves. We denote the set of these groups as $S$. In this paper we deal with three problems concerning the torsion of elliptic curves over cubic fields. First, we study the possible torsion groups of elliptic curves that appear over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $S_3$ and over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $\Z…
This paper is a follow up of arXiv:1702.02255 [math.NT]. We construct explicitly versal families of elliptic curves with rational points of order 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 respectively.
We construct unramified central simple algebras representing 2-torsion classes in the Brauer group of a hyperelliptic curve, and show that every 2-torsion class can be constructed this way when the curve has a rational Weierstrass point or when the base field is C_1. In general, we show that a large (but in general proper) subgroup of the 2-torsion classes are given by the construction. Examples demonstrating applications to the arithmetic of hyperelliptic curves defined over number fields are given.
For a prime number p, we characterize the groups that may arise as torsion subgroups of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over a number field of degree 2p. In particular, our work shows that a classification in the strongest sense is tied to determining whether there exist infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over Q. We study the relationship between the torsion subgroup E(Q)_tors and the torsion subgroup E(K)_tors, where K is a cubic number field. In particular, We study the number of cubic number fields K such that E(Q)_tors\neq E(K)_tors.
We study the structure of the Mordell--Weil group of elliptic curves over number fields of degree 2, 3, and 4. We show that if $T$ is a group, then either the class of all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with torsion subgroup $T$ is empty, or it contains curves of rank~0 as well as curves of positive rank. We prove a similar but slightly weaker result for cubic and quartic fields. On the other hand, we find a group $T$ and a quartic field $K$ such that among the elliptic curves over $K$ with torsion subgroup $T$, there are curves of positive rank, but none of rank~0. We find examples of …
Consider the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic genus two curve defined over a prime field of characteristic p and with complex multiplication. In this paper we show that the p-Sylow subgroup of the Jacobian is either trivial or of order p.
We prove that all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with a subgroup isomorphic to $C_{16}$, as well as all elliptic curves over cubic fields with a subgroup isomorphic to $C_2\times C_{14}$, are base changes of elliptic curves defined over $\Q$. We obtain these results by studying geometric properties of modular curves and maps between modular curves, and then obtaining a modular description of these curves and maps.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve and $π:E\to\mathbb{P}^{1}$ a standard double cover identifying $\pm P\in E$. It is known that for some torsion points $P_{i}\in E$, $1\leq i\leq4$, the cross ratio of $\{π(P_{i})\}_{i=1}^{4}$ is independent of $E$. In this article, we will give a complete classification of such quadruples.
In this paper, we survey some Galois-theoretic techniques for studying torsion points on curves. In particular, we give new proofs of some results of A. Tamagawa and the present authors for studying torsion points on curves with "ordinary good" or "ordinary semistable" reduction at a given prime. We also give new proofs of: (1) The Manin-Mumford conjecture: There are only finitely many torsion points lying on a curve of genus at least 2 embedded in its Jacobian by an Albanese map; and (2) The Coleman-Kaskel-Ribet conjecture: If p is a prime number which is at least 23, then the only torsion po…
We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}_0(N)$ of a modular curve $X_0(N)$ with respect to a reduced divisor given by the sum of all cusps on it. When $N$ is a power of a prime $\geq 5$, we exhibit that the group of rational torsion points $\widetilde{J}_0(N)(\mathbb{Q})_{\mathrm{Tor}}$ tends to be much smaller than the classical Jacobian.
We relate the Brauer group of a Kummer surface to the Brauer group of the corresponding abelian surface. For many pairs of elliptic curves over the rational numbers we prove that the Kummer surface attached to their product has trivial Brauer group.
Cais, Ellenberg and Zureick-Brown recently observed that over finite fields of characteristic two, all sufficiently general smooth plane projective curves of a given odd degree admit a non-trivial rational 2-torsion point on their Jacobian. We extend their observation to curves given by Laurent polynomials with a fixed Newton polygon, provided that the polygon satisfies a certain combinatorial property. We also show that in each of these cases, the sufficiently general condition is implied by being ordinary. Our treatment includes many classical families, such as hyperelliptic curves of odd ge…
We determine the isogeny classes of abelian surfaces over F_q whose group of F_q-rational points has order divisible by q^2. We also solve the same problem for Jacobians of genus-2 curves.
We introduce an algorithm to compute the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 over the rationals. We apply a Magma implementation of our algorithm to a database of curves with low discriminant due to Sutherland as well as a list of curves with small coefficients. In the process, we find several torsion structures not previously described in the literature. The algorithm is a generalisation of an algorithm for genus 2 due to Stoll, which we extend to abelian varieties satisfying certain conditions. The idea is to compute p-adic torsion lifts of points ov…
We demonstrate that the 3-power torsion points of the Jacobians of the principal modular curves X(3^n) are fixed by the kernel of the canonical outer Galois representation of the pro-3 fundamental group of the projective line minus three points. The proof proceeds by demonstrating the curves in question satisfy a two-part criterion given by Anderson and Ihara. Two proofs of the second part of the criterion are provided; the first relies on a theorem of Shimura, while the second uses the moduli interpretation.
Let A be a del Pezzo order on the projective plane over the field of complex numbers. We prove that every torsion-free A-module of rank one can be deformed into a locally free A-module of rank one.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and $p \in \{5,7,11 \}$ be a prime. We determine the possibilities for $E(\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{p}))_{tors}$. Additionally, we determine all the possibilities for $E(\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{16}))_{tors}$ and $E(\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{27}))_{tors}$. Using these results we are able to determine the possibilities for $E(\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{\infty}}))_{tors}$.
We study torsion free sheaves on integral projective curves with at most ordinary cusps as singularities. Adjusting Seshadri's structure from the nodal case to this one, we describe these sheaves by means of a triple defined in the normalization of the curve.
In this paper we give a survey about the classification of vector bundles and torsion free sheaves on degenerations of elliptic curves. Coherent sheaves on singular curves of arithmetic genus one can be studied using the technique of matrix problems or via Fourier-Mukai transforms, both methods are discussed here. Moreover, we include new proofs of some classical results about vector bundles on elliptic curves.
It is a classical result (apparently due to Tate) that all elliptic curves with a torsion point of order n ($4 \leq n \leq 10$, or n = 12) lie in a one-parameter family. However, this fact does not appear to have been used ever for computing the torsion of an elliptic curve. We present here a extremely down-to-earth algorithm using the existence of such a family.
In this paper we study the embedded topology of reducible plane curves having a smooth irreducible component. In previous studies, the relation between the topology and certain torsion classes in the Picard group of degree zero of the smooth component was implicitly considered. We formulate this relation clearly and give a criterion for distinguishing the embedded topology in terms of torsion classes. Furthermore, we give a method of systematically constructing examples of curves where our criterion is applicable, and give new examples of Zariski tuples.
The Witt group of a smooth curve over a real closed field is explicitely calculated. The method uses a comparison theorem between the graded Witt group and the etale cohomology groups. In the second part of the paper, the torsion Picard group of a smooth real curve is also computed. The calculation depends on a new invariant introduced here. We prove that several problems of real algebraic geometry are related to this invariant.
This work deals with an algebro-geometric theory of solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation based on torsion free coherent sheaves of Lie algebras on Weierstrass cubic curves.
We give an algorithm to explicitly determine all elements of the $q$-torsion (for $q$ an odd prime) of the Brauer group of an elliptic curve over any base field of characteristic different from $q$, containing a primitive $q$-th root of unity. These elements of the Brauer group are given as tensor products of symbol algebras over the function field of the elliptic curve. We give sufficient conditions to determine if the Brauer classes that arise are trivial. Using our algorithm, we derive an upper bound on the symbol length of the prime torsion of $\mathrm{Br}(E)/\mathrm{Br}(k)$.
We present a novel, deterministic, and efficient method to detect whether a given rational space curve is symmetric. By using well-known differential invariants of space curves, namely the curvature and torsion, the method is significantly faster, simpler, and more general than an earlier method addressing a similar problem. To support this claim, we present an analysis of the arithmetic complexity of the algorithm and timings from an implementation in Sage.
Let $C$ be a curve of genus $g\geqslant 2$ defined over the fraction field $K$ of a complete discrete valuation ring $R$ with algebraically closed residue field. Suppose that $\char(K)=0$ and that the characteristic of the residue field is not 2. Suppose that the Jacobian $\Jac(C)$ has semi-stable reduction over $R$. Embed $C$ in $\Jac(C)$ using a $K$-rational point. We show that the coordinates of the torsion points lying on $C$ lie in the unique moderately ramified quadratic extension of the field generated over $K$ by the coordinates of the $p$-torsion points on $\Jac(C)$.
Let S be a ruled surface without sections of negative self-intersection. We classify the irreducible components of the moduli stack of torsion-free sheaves of rank 2 sheaves on S. We also classify the irreducible components of the Brill-Noether loci in Hilb^N(P1xP1) given by W_N^0(D)={[X] | h^1(I_X(D)) >= 1 } for D an effective divisor class. Our methods are also applicable to P2 giving new proofs of theorems of Stromme (slightly extended) and Coppo.
We study the problem of $d$-gonality of the modular curve $X_0(N)$. As a result, we can give an upperbound of the level $N$ by means of $d$. This generalizes Ogg's result on hyperelliptic modular curves ($d = 2$). As a corollary of this result, we prove an analogue of the strong Uniform Boundedness Conjecture for elliptic curves defined over the function fields of curves. If a base curve is $d$-gonal, we can bound orders of torsions of Mordell-Weil groups in terms of $d$ uniformly.
We construct geometric realizations of the r-colored bosonic and fermionic Fock space on the equivariant cohomology of the moduli space of framed rank r torsion-free sheaves on CP^2. Using these constructions, we realize geometrically all level one irreducible representations of the affine Lie algebra \hat{gl(r)}. The cyclic group Z_k acts naturally on the moduli space of sheaves, and the fixed-point components of this action are cyclic Nakajima quiver varieties . We realize level k irreducible representations of \hat{gl(r)} on the equivariant cohomology of these quiver varieties.
