Let $C$ be a curve of genus $g\geqslant 2$ defined over the fraction field $K$ of a complete discrete valuation ring $R$ with algebraically closed residue field. Suppose that $\char(K)=0$ and that the characteristic of the residue field is not 2. Suppose that the Jacobian $\Jac(C)$ has semi-stable reduction over $R$. Embed $C$ in $\Jac(C)$ using a $K$-rational point.
We show that the coordinates of the torsion points lying on $C$ lie in the unique moderately ramified quadratic extension of the field generated over $K$ by the coordinates of the $p$-torsion points on $\Jac(C)$.
Let p be an odd prime, K a finite extension of Q_p, G=Gal(\bar K/K) the Galois group and e=e(K/Q_p) the ramification index. Suppose T is a p^n torsion representation such that T is isomorphic to a quotient of two G-stable Z_p-lattices in a semi-stable representation with Hodge-Tate weights in {0,...,r}. We prove that there exists a constant μexplicitly depending on n, e and r such that the upper numbering ramification group G^{(μ)} acts on T trivially.
This is the second part of the paper which proves the compatibility of pushforward along a proper morphism of an étale constructible sheaf and the pushforward of its characteristic cycle up to $p$-torsion. In this second part, we show a result which is postponed from the first part because the technique of the proof is different. Especially, we use Zariski-Riemann spaces to show a certain alteration process terminates.
The notion of modulus is a striking feature of Rosenlicht-Serre's theory of generalized Jacobian varieties of curves. It was carried over to algebraic cycles on general varieties by Bloch-Esnault, Park, Rülling, Krishna-Levine. Recently, Kerz-Saito introduced a notion of Chow group of $0$-cycles with modulus in connection with geometric class field theory with wild ramification for varieties over finite fields. We study the non-homotopy invariant part of the Chow group of $0$-cycles with modulus and show their torsion and divisibility properties. Modulus is being brought to sheaf theory by Kah…
We generalize to $n$-torsion a result of Kempf's describing $2$-torsion points lying on a theta divisor. This is accomplished by means of certain semihomogeneous vector bundles introduced and studied by Mukai and Oprea. As an application, we prove a sharp upper bound for the number of $n$-torsion points on a theta divisor, and show that this is achieved only in the case of products of elliptic curves, settling in the affirmative a conjecture of Auffarth, Pirola and Salvati Manni.
In this paper, we survey some Galois-theoretic techniques for studying torsion points on curves. In particular, we give new proofs of some results of A. Tamagawa and the present authors for studying torsion points on curves with "ordinary good" or "ordinary semistable" reduction at a given prime. We also give new proofs of: (1) The Manin-Mumford conjecture: There are only finitely many torsion points lying on a curve of genus at least 2 embedded in its Jacobian by an Albanese map; and (2) The Coleman-Kaskel-Ribet conjecture: If p is a prime number which is at least 23, then the only torsion po…
Suppose $X$ is a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p=2$. We prove that the de Rham cohomology of $X$ decomposes into pieces indexed by the branch points of the hyperelliptic cover. This allows us to compute the isomorphism class of the $2$-torsion group scheme $J_X[2]$ of the Jacobian of $X$ in terms of the Ekedahl-Oort type. The interesting feature is that $J_X[2]$ depends only on some discrete invariants of $X$, namely, on the ramification invariants associated with the branch points. We give a complete classification of the gr…
Let $C=A(r, r')$ be a closed annulus of radii $r$ and $r'$ ($r < r' \in \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}$) over a complete discrete valuation field with algebraically closed residue field of characteristic $p>0$. To an étale sheaf of $\mathbb{F}_{\ell}$-modules $\mathcal{F}$ on $C$, ramified at most at a finite set of rigid points of $C$, we associate an Abbes-Saito Swan conductor function $\mathrm{sw}_{\mathrm{AS}}(\mathcal{F}, \cdot): [r, r']\cap \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0} \to \mathbb{Q}$ which, for the variable $t$, measures the ramification of $\mathcal{F}\lvert C^{[t]}$ - the restriction of $\mathcal{F}$ to …
Let $X$ be a curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over a number field $F$ of degree $d = [F:Q]$. The conjectural existence of a uniform bound $N(g,d)$ on the number $\#X(F)$ of $F$-rational points of $X$ is an outstanding open problem in arithmetic geometry, known by [CHM97] to follow from the Bombieri--Lang conjecture. A related conjecture posits the existence of a uniform bound $N_{{\rm tors},\dagger}(g,d)$ on the number of geometric torsion points of the Jacobian $J$ of $X$ which lie on the image of $X$ under an Abel--Jacobi map. For fixed $X$ this quantity was conjectured to be finite by Manin--Mumfor…
In order to study $p$-adic étale cohomology of an open subvariety $U$ of a smooth proper variety $X$ over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, we introduce new $p$-primary torsion sheaves. It is a modification of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt sheaves of $X$ depending on effective divisors $D$ supported in $X-U$. Then we establish a perfect duality between cohomology groups of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt cohomology of $U$ and an inverse limit of those of the mentioned modified sheaves. Over a finite field, the duality can be used to study wild ramification class field theory for the open su…
We prove that all points of a toroidal compactification lying over 0-dimensional cusps are rationally equivalent in the integral Chow group for most classical modular varieties (Siegel, Hilbert, orthogonal, Hermitian, quaternionic). This gives a generalization, and even strengthening, of the Manin-Drinfeld theorem in higher dimension from the viewpoint of algebraic cycles. The same result no longer holds for Picard modular varieties, but for them we prove that the difference of any two "special" boundary points, which are dense in the boundary, is torsion.
Suppose X is the complex zero set of a finite collection of polynomials in Z[x_1,...,x_n]. We show that deciding whether X contains a point all of whose coordinates are d_th roots of unity can be done within NP^NP (relative to the sparse encoding), under a plausible assumption on primes in arithmetic progression. In particular, our hypothesis can still hold even under certain failures of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, such as the presence of Siegel-Landau zeroes. Furthermore, we give a similar (but UNconditional) complexity upper bound for n=1. Finally, letting T be any algebraic subgroup…
For the study of the Mordell-Weil group of an elliptic curve ${\bf E}$ over a complex function field of a projective curve $B$, the first author introduced the use of differential-geometric methods arising from Kähler metrics on $\mathcal H \times \mathbb C$ invariant under the action of the semi-direct product ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb R) \ltimes \mathbb R^2$. To a properly chosen geometric model $π: \mathcal E \to B$ of ${\bf E}$ as an elliptic surface and a non-torsion holomorphic section $σ: B \to \mathcal E$ there is an associated ``verticality'' $η_σ$ of $σ$ related to the locally defined Bett…
