Cais, Ellenberg and Zureick-Brown recently observed that over finite fields of characteristic two, all sufficiently general smooth plane projective curves of a given odd degree admit a non-trivial rational 2-torsion point on their Jacobian. We extend their observation to curves given by Laurent polynomials with a fixed Newton polygon, provided that the polygon satisfies a certain combinatorial property. We also show that in each of these cases, the sufficiently general condition is implied by being ordinary. Our treatment includes many classical families, such as hyperelliptic curves of odd genus and $C_{a,b}$ curves. In the hyperelliptic case, we provide alternative proofs using an explicit description of the 2-torsion subgroup.
We establish a connection between torsion packets on curves of genus $2$ and pairs of elliptic curves realized as double covers of the projective line $\mathbb{P}_{x}^{1}$ that have many common torsion $x$-coordinates. This can be used to show that the set of common torsion $x$-coordinates has size at least $22$ infinitely often and has $34$ elements in some cases. We also explain how we obtained the current record example of a hyperelliptic torsion packet on a genus $2$ curve.
For any number field, we prove that there exists an elliptic curve defined over this field such that its Shafarevich-Tate group has a nontrivial 2-torsion subgroup.
In a series of papers we classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves base-extended to number fields of a fixed degree. In this paper we turn our attention to the question of how the torsion of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over the rationals grows over quadratic fields. We go further and we give an explicit characterization of the quadratic fields where the torsion grows in terms of some invariants attached to the curve.
For a prime number p, we characterize the groups that may arise as torsion subgroups of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over a number field of degree 2p. In particular, our work shows that a classification in the strongest sense is tied to determining whether there exist infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.
We prove that all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with a subgroup isomorphic to $C_{16}$, as well as all elliptic curves over cubic fields with a subgroup isomorphic to $C_2\times C_{14}$, are base changes of elliptic curves defined over $\Q$. We obtain these results by studying geometric properties of modular curves and maps between modular curves, and then obtaining a modular description of these curves and maps.
We introduce an algorithm to compute the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 over the rationals. We apply a Magma implementation of our algorithm to a database of curves with low discriminant due to Sutherland as well as a list of curves with small coefficients. In the process, we find several torsion structures not previously described in the literature. The algorithm is a generalisation of an algorithm for genus 2 due to Stoll, which we extend to abelian varieties satisfying certain conditions. The idea is to compute p-adic torsion lifts of points ov…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and $p \in \{5,7,11 \}$ be a prime. We determine the possibilities for $E(\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{p}))_{tors}$. Additionally, we determine all the possibilities for $E(\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{16}))_{tors}$ and $E(\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{27}))_{tors}$. Using these results we are able to determine the possibilities for $E(\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{\infty}}))_{tors}$.
We determine the set $S(d)$ of possible prime orders of $K$-rational points on elliptic curves over number fields $K$ of degree $d$, for $d = 4$, $5$, $6$, and $7$.
By Mazur's Torsion Theorem, there are fourteen possibilities for the non-trivial torsion subgroup $T$ of a rational elliptic curve. For each $T$, such that $E$ may have additive reduction at a prime $p$, we consider a parameterized family $E_T$ of elliptic curves with the property that they parameterize all elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ which contain $T$ in their torsion subgroup. Using these parameterized families, we explicitly classify the Kodaira-Néron type, the conductor exponent, and the local Tamagawa number at each prime $p$ where $E/\mathbb{Q}$ has additive reduction. As a consequenc…
We give a structure theorem for the $m$-torsion of the Jacobian of a general superelliptic curve $y^m=F(x)$. We study existence of torsion on curves of the form $y^q=x^p-x+a$ over finite fields of characteristic $p$. We apply those results to bound from below the Mordell-Weil ranks of Jacobians of certain superelliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$.
In this paper, we explicitly classify the minimal discriminants of all elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with a non-trivial torsion subgroup. This is done by considering various parameterized families of elliptic curves with the property that they parameterize all elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with a non-trivial torsion point. We follow this by giving admissible change of variables, which give a global minimal model for $E$. We also provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the parameters of these families to determine the primes at which $E$ has additive reduction. In addition, we use thes…
We show that average analytic rank of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion $G$ is bounded for every torsion group $G$ under GRH for elliptic curve $L$-functions.
We give a classification of the cuspidal automorphic representations attached to rational elliptic curves with a non-trivial torsion point of odd order. Such elliptic curves are parameterizable, and in this paper, we find the necessary and sufficient conditions on the parameters to determine when split or non-split multiplicative reduction occurs. Using this and the known results on when additive reduction occurs for these parametrized curves, we classify the automorphic representations in terms of the parameters.
