The notion of mixed representations of quivers can be derived from ordinary quiver representations by considering the dual action of groups on "vertex" vector spaces together with the usual action. A generating system for the algebra of semi-invariants of mixed representations of a quiver is determined. This is done by reducing the problem to the case of bipartite quivers of the special form and by introducing a function DP on three matrices, which is a mixture of the determinant and two pfaffians.
We introduce a new concept of mixed representations of quivers that is a generalization of ordinary representations of quivers and orthogonal (symplectic) representations of symmetric quivers introduced recently by Derksen and Weyman. We describe the generating invariants of mixed representations of quivers (First Fundamental Theorem) and prove additional results that allow us to describe the defining relations between them in the second article.
The classical construction of representations of quivers enables us to consider linear maps between several vector spaces. The mixed representations of quivers helps us to work with linear maps as well as bilinear forms on several vector spaces. We construct a finite generating set for the T-ideal of identities of the polynomial invariants of mixed representations of a quiver.
In the previous article we introduced the new concept of mixed representations of quivers and described the generators of their algebras of invariants. In this article we describe the defining relations of these algebras. Some applications for the invariants of orthogonal or symplectic groups acting on several matrices are given.
This is a survey article for "Handbook of Linear Algebra", 2nd ed., Chapman & Hall/CRC, 2014. An informal introduction to representations of quivers and finite dimensional algebras from a linear algebraist's point of view is given. The notion of quiver representations is extended to representations of mixed graphs, which permits one to study systems of linear mappings and bilinear or sesquilinear forms. The problem of classifying such systems is reduced to the problem of classifying systems of linear mappings.
A minimal (by inclusion) generating set for the algebra of semi-invariants of a quiver of dimension (2,...,2) is established over an infinite field of arbitrary characteristic. The mentioned generating set consists of the determinants of generic matrices and the traces of tree paths of pairwise different multidegrees, where in the case of characteristic different from two we take only admissible paths. As a consequence, we describe relations modulo decomposable semi-invariants.
We show that a finite, connected quiver Q without oriented cycles is a Dynkin or Euclidean quiver if and only if all orbit semigroups of representations of Q are saturated.
In this work we obtain a version of the Procesi-Rasmyslov Theorem for the algebra of semi-invariants of representations of an arbitrary quiver with dimension vector (2,2,...,2).
We suggest a geometrical approach to the semi-invariants of quivers based on Luna's slice theorem and the Luna-Richardson theorem. The locally semi-simple representations are defined in this spirit but turn out to be connected with stable representations in the sense of GIT, Schofield's perpendicular categories, and Ringel's regular representations. As an application of this method we obtain an independent short proof of the theorem of Skowronsky and Weyman about semi-invariants of the tame quivers.
We present some theorems and algorithms for calculating perpendicular categories and locally semi-simple decompositions. We implemented a computer program {\sc TETIVA} based on these algorithms and we offer this program for everybody's use.
The semi-stable ChowHa of a quiver with stability is defined as an analog of the Cohomological Hall algebra of Kontsevich and Soibelman via convolution in equivariant Chow groups of semi-stable loci in representation varieties of quivers. We prove several structural results on the semi-stable ChowHa, namely isomorphism of the cycle map, a tensor product decomposition, and a tautological presentation. For symmetric quivers, this leads to an identification of their quantized Donaldson-Thomas invariants with the Chow-Betti numbers of moduli spaces.
Stability conditions play an important role in the study of representations of a quiver. In the present paper, we study semistable representations of quivers. In particular, we describe the slopes of semistable representations of a tame quiver for a fixed stability condition.
We present a conjecture generalizing the Cauchy formula for Macdonald polynomials. This conjecture encodes the mixed Hodge polynomials of the character varieties of representations of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface of genus g to GL_n(C) with fixed generic semi-simple conjugacy classes at k punctures. Using the character table of GL_n(F_q) we calculate the E-polynomial of these character varieties and confirm that it is as predicted by our main conjecture. Then, using the character table of gl_n(F_q), we calculate the E-polynomial of certain associated comet-shaped quiver varieties,…
For a stratified topological space we introduce the category of IC-modules, which are linear algebra devices with the relations described by the equation d^2=0. We prove that the category of (mixed) IC-modules is equivalent to the category of (mixed) perverse sheaves for flag varieties. As an application, we describe an algorithm calculating the quiver underlying the BGG category O for arbitrary simple Lie algebra, thus answering a question which goes back to I. M. Gelfand.
This is my PhD thesis supervised by Professor Jerzy Weyman. A symmetric quiver $(Q,σ)$ is a finite quiver without oriented cycles $Q=(Q_0,Q_1)$ equipped with a contravariant involution $σ$ on $Q_0\sqcup Q_1$. The involution allows us to define a nondegenerate bilinear form $<,>$ on a representation $V$ of $Q$. We shall say that $V$ is orthogonal if $<,>$ is symmetric and symplectic if $<,>$ is skew-symmetric. Moreover we define an action of products of classical groups on the space of orthogonal representations and on the space of symplectic representations. So we prove that if $(Q,σ)$ is a sy…
In this article we study a conjecture of Geiss-Leclerc-Schr{ö}er, which is an analogue of a classical conjecture of Lusztig in the Weyl group case. It concerns the relation between canonical basis and semi-canonical basis through the characteristic cycles. We formulate an approach to this conjecture and prove it for type $A_2$ quiver. In general type A case, we reduce the conjecture to show that certain nearby cycles have vanishing Euler characteristic.
We use recent results on matrix semi-invariants to give degree bounds on generators for the ring of semi-invariants for quivers with no oriented cycles.
In this paper, we solve a problem raised by V. Kac in \cite{Kac} on locally semi-simple quiver representations. Specifically, we show that an acyclic quiver $Q$ is of tame representation type if and only if every representation of $Q$ with a semi-simple ring of endomorphisms is locally semi-simple.
We introduce the notion of a super-representation of a quiver. For super-representations of quivers over a field of characteristic zero, we describe the corresponding (super)algebras of polynomial semi-invariants and polynomial invariants.
Moreover, we define an action of products of classical groups on the space of orthogonal representations and on the space of symplectic representations. So we prove that if $(Q,σ)$ is a symmetric quiver of tame type then the rings of semi-invarian…
We give a new short proof of Skowronski and Weyman's theorem about the structure of the algebras of semi-invariants of Euclidean quivers, in the case of quivers without oriented cycles. Our proof is based essentially on Derksen and Weyman's result about the generators of these algebras and properties of Schofield semi-invariants.
In arXiv:0810.2076 we presented a conjecture generalizing the Cauchy formula for Macdonald polynomials. This conjecture encodes the mixed Hodge polynomials of the representation varieties of Riemann surfaces with semi-simple conjugacy classes at the punctures. We proved several results which support this conjecture. Here we announce new results which are consequences of those of arXiv:0810.2076.
In this paper we compute b-functions (or Bernstein-Sato polynomials) of various semi-invariants of quivers. The main tool is an explicit relation for the b-functions between semi-invariants that correspond to each other under reflection functors (or castling transforms). This enables us to compute recursively the b-functions for all Dynkin quivers, and extended Dynkin quivers with prehomogeneous dimension vectors.
We give a moduli-theoretic treatment of the existence and properties of moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations, avoiding methods from geometric invariant theory. Using the existence criteria of Alper--Halpern-Leistner--Heinloth, we show that for many stability functions, the stack of semistable representations admits an adequate moduli space, and prove that this moduli space is proper over the moduli space of semisimple representations. We construct a natural determinantal line bundle that descends to a semiample line bundle on the moduli space and provide new effective bounds for …
A pathway from one vertex of a quiver to another is a reduced path. We modify the classical definition of quiver representations and we prove that semi-invariant polynomials for filtered quiver representations come from diagonal entries if and only if the quiver has at most two pathways between any two vertices. Such class of quivers includes finite $ADE$-Dynkin quivers, affine $\widetilde{A}\widetilde{D}\widetilde{E}$-Dynkin quivers, star-shaped and comet-shaped quivers. Next, we explicitly write all semi-invariant generators for filtered quiver representations for framed quivers with at most…
We develop basic cluster theory from an elementary point of view using a variation of binary trees which we call mixed cobinary trees. We show that the number of isomorphism classes of such trees is given by the Catalan number Cn where n is the number of internal nodes. We also consider the corresponding quiver Q_ε of type An-1. As a special case of more general known results about the relation between c-vectors, representations of quivers and their semi-invariants, we explain the bijection between mixed cobinary trees and the vertices of the generalized associahedron corresponding to the quiv…
We consider the action of a semisimple Hopf algebra $H$ on an $m$-Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebra $A$. Such an algebra $A$ is a derivation-quotient algebra for some twisted superpotential $\mathsf{w}$, and we show that the homological determinant of the action of $H$ on $A$ can be easily calculated using $\mathsf{w}$. Using this, we show that the smash product $A\,\#\,H$ is also a derivation-quotient algebra, and use this to explicitly determine a quiver algebra $Λ$ to which $A\,\#\,H$ is Morita equivalent, generalising a result of Bocklandt-Schedler-Wemyss. We also show how $Λ$ can be u…
In this paper, we answer the question of when the subcategory of semi-stable representations is the same for two rational vectors for an acyclic quiver. This question has been previously answered by Ingalls, Paquette, and Thomas in the tame case in [10]. Here we take a more invariant theoretic approach, to answer this question in general. We recover the known result in the tame case.
Fortin and Reutenauer defined the non-commutative rank for a matrix with entries that are linear functions. The non-commutative rank is related to stability in invariant theory, non-commutative arithmetic circuits, and Edmonds' problem. We will generalize the non-commutative rank to the representation theory of quivers and define non-commutative Hom and Ext spaces. We will relate these new notions to King's criterion for $σ$-stability of quiver representations, and the general Hom and Ext spaces studied by Schofield. We discuss polynomial time algorithms that compute the non-commutative Homs a…
We show that the cone of finite stability conditions of a quiver Q without oriented cycles has a fan covering given by (the dual of) the cluster fan of Q. Along the way, we give new proofs of Schofield's results on perpendicular categories. We also study domains of semi-invariants of quivers via quiver exceptional sequences. In particular, we recover Igusa-Orr-Todorov-Weyman's theorem on cluster complexes and domains of semi-invariants for Dynkin quivers.
Let $Q$ be a quiver with dimension vector $α$ prehomogeneous under the action of the product of general linear groups $\operatorname{GL}(α)$ on the representation variety $\operatorname{Rep}(Q,α)$. We study geometric properties of zero sets of semi-invariants of this space. It is known that for large numbers $N$, the nullcone in $\operatorname{Rep}(Q,N\cdot α)$ becomes a complete intersection. First, we show that it also becomes reduced. Then, using Bernstein-Sato polynomials, we discuss some criteria for zero sets to have rational singularities. In particular, we show that for Dynkin quivers …
Let $(Q,σ)$ be a symmetric quiver, where $Q=(Q_0,Q_1)$ is a finite quiver without oriented cycles and $σ$ is a contravariant involution on $Q_0\sqcup Q_1$. The involution allows us to define a nondegenerate bilinear form $<,>$ on a representation $V$ of $Q$. We shall call the representation orthogonal if $<,>$ is symmetric and symplectic if $<,>$ is skew-symmetric. Moreover we can define an action of products of classical groups on the space of orthogonal representations and on the space of symplectic representations. For symmetric quivers of finite type, we prove that the rings of semi-invari…
We show that a semi-stable moduli space of representations of an acyclic quiver can be identified with two GIT quotients by reductive groups. One of a quiver Grassmannian of a projective representation, the other of a quiver Grassmannian of an injective representation. This recovers as special cases the classical Gelfand-MacPherson correspondence and its generalization by Hu and Kim to bipartite quivers, as well as the Zelevinsky map for a quiver of Dynkin type A with the linear orientation.
We consider the problem of simultaneously finding lower-dimensional subspace structures in a given $m$-tuple of possibly corrupted, high-dimensional data sets all of the same size. We refer to this problem as simultaneous robust subspace recovery (SRSR) and provide a quiver invariant theoretic approach to it. We show that SRSR is a particular case of the more general problem of effectively deciding whether a quiver representation is semi-stable (in the sense of Geometric Invariant Theory) and, in case it is not, finding a subrepresentation certifying in an optimal way that the representation i…
This article is based on my lecture notes from summer schools at the Universities of Utah (June 2007) and Warwick (September 2007). We provide an introduction to explicit methods in the study of moduli spaces of quiver representations and derived categories arising in toric geometry. The first main goal is to present the noncommutative geometric approach to semiprojective toric varieties via quivers. To achieve this, we use geometric invariant theory to construct both semiprojective toric varieties and moduli spaces of quiver representations. The second main goal builds on the first by present…
In this paper, we study the semi-stable subcategories of the category of representations of a Euclidean quiver, and the possible intersections of these subcategories. Contrary to the Dynkin case, we find out that the intersection of semi-stable subcategories may not be semi-stable. However, only a finite number of exceptions occur, and we give a description of these subcategories. Moreover, one can attach a simplicial fan in $\mathbb{Q}^n$ to any acyclic quiver $Q$, and this simplicial fan allows one to completely determine the canonical presentation of any element in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. This fan …
Let ${\rm SI}_β(Q)$ be the semi-invariant ring of $β$-dimensional representations of a quiver $Q$. Suppose that $(Q,β)$ projects to another quiver with dimension vector $(Q',β')$ through an exceptional representation $E$. We show that if ${\rm SI}_β(Q)$ is the upper cluster algebra associated to an ice quiver $Δ$, then ${\rm SI}_{β'}(Q')$ is the upper cluster algebra associated to $Δ'$, where $Δ'$ is obtained from $Δ$ through simple operations depending on $E$. We also study the relation of their basis using the quiver with potential model.
These lecture notes consist of an introduction to moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, with a strong emphasis placed on examples related to the theory of quiver representations. The goal is to provide the background necessary to understand the construction of the moduli spaces of stable and semistable quiver representations due to King, Nakajima's quiver varieties, as well as some 'quiver versions' of existing moduli spaces of algebra-geometric objects.
We give a description of faces of all codimensions for the cones of weights of rings of semi-invariants of quivers. For a triple flag quiver and faces of codimension 1 this reduces to the result of Knutson-Tao-Woodward on the facets of the Klyachko cone. We give new applications to Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, including a product formula for LR-coefficients corresponding to triples of partitions lying on a wall of the Klyachko cone. We systematically review and develop the necessary methods (exceptional and Schur sequences, orthogonal categories, semi-stable decompositions, GIT quotient…
Let $\mathbb{K}$ denote an algebraically closed field and $A$ a free product of finitely many semisimple associative $\mathbb{K}$-algebras. We associate to $A$ a finite acyclic quiver $Γ$ and show that the category of finite dimensional $A$-modules is equivalent to a full subcategory of the category ${\rm rep}(Γ)$ of finite dimensional representations of $Γ$. Under this equivalence, the simple $A$-modules correspond exactly to the $θ$-stable representations of $Γ$ for some stability parameter $θ$. This gives us necessary conditions for an $A$-module to be simple, conditions which are also suff…
A central problem in algebraic complexity, posed by J. Edmonds, asks to decide if the span of a given $l$-tuple $\V=(\V_1, \ldots, \V_l)$ of $N \times N$ complex matrices contains a non-singular matrix. In this paper, we provide a quiver invariant theoretic approach to this problem. Viewing $\V$ as a representation of the $l$-Kronecker quiver $\K_l$, Edmonds' problem can be rephrased as asking to decide if there exists a semi-invariant on the representation space $(\CC^{N\times N})^l$ of weight $(1,-1)$ that does not vanish at $\V$. In other words, Edmonds' problem is asking to decide if the w…
We consider a generalization of representations of quivers that can be derived from the ordinary representations of quivers by considering a product of arbitrary classical groups instead of a product of the general linear groups and by considering the dual action of groups on "vertex" vector spaces together with the usual action. A generating system for the corresponding algebra of invariants is found. In particular, a generating system for the algebra of SO(n)-invariants of several matrices is constructed over a field of characteristic different from 2. The proof uses the reduction to semi-in…
We define and study virtual representation spaces having both positive and negative dimensions at the vertices of a quiver without oriented cycles. We consider the natural semi-invariants on these spaces which we call virtual semi-invariants and prove that they satisfy the three basic theorems: the First Fundamental Theorem, the Saturation Theorem and the Canonical Decomposition Theorem. In the special case of Dynkin quivers with n vertices this gives the fundamental interrelationship between supports of the semi-invariants and the Tilting Triangulation of the (n-1)-sphere.
It is well known that the ring of polynomial invariants of a reductive group is finitely generated. However, it is difficult to give strong upper bounds on the degrees of the generators, especially over fields of positive characteristic. In this paper, we make use of the theory of good filtrations along with recent results on the null cone to provide polynomial bounds for matrix semi-invariants in arbitrary characteristic, and consequently for matrix invariants. Our results generalize to invariants and semi-invariants of quivers.
We use semi-invariant pictures to prove two conjectures about maximal green sequences. First: if $Q$ is any acyclic valued quiver with an arrow $j\to i$ of infinite type then any maximal green sequence for $Q$ must mutate at $i$ before mutating at $j$. Second: for any quiver $Q'$ obtained by mutating an acyclic valued quiver $Q$ of tame type, there are only finitely many maximal green sequences for $Q'$. Both statements follow from the Rotation Lemma for reddening sequences and this in turn follows from the Mutation Formula for the semi-invariant picture for $Q$.
The main result of this paper is the statement that the Hodge theoretic Donaldson-Thomas invariant for a quiver with zero potential and a generic stability condition agrees with the compactly supported intersection cohomology of the closure of the stable locus inside the associated coarse moduli space of semistable quiver representations. In fact, we prove an even stronger result relating the Donaldson-Thomas "function" to the intersection complex. The proof of our main result relies on a relative version of the integrality conjecture in Donaldson-Thomas theory. This will be the topic of the s…
Semisimple representations of the free product Z_p*Z_q determine θ-semistable representations of a specific quiver Q_pq. The dimension vectors of θ-stable representations of this quiver were classified by Le Bruyn and Adriaenssens. In this paper we classify the moduli spaces M_α^ss(Q_pq,θ) which are smooth projective varieties.
Rank functors on a quiver $Q$ are certain additive functors from the category of representations of $Q$ to the category of finite-dimensional vector spaces. Composing with the dimension function on vector spaces gives a rank function on $Q$. These induce functions on $\rep(Q, α)$, the variety of representations of $Q$ of dimension vector $α$, and thus can be used to define "rank loci" in $\rep(Q, α)$ as collections of points satisfying finite lists of linear inequalities of rank functions. Although quiver rank functions are not generally semicontinuous like the rank of a linear map, we show he…
Consider a smooth quasiprojective variety X equipped with a C*-action, and a regular function f: X -> C which is C*-equivariant with respect to a positive weight action on the base. We prove the purity of the mixed Hodge structure and the hard Lefschetz theorem on the cohomology of the vanishing cycle complex of f on proper components of the critical locus of f, generalizing a result of Steenbrink for isolated quasi-homogeneous singularities. Building on work of Kontsevich-Soibelman, Nagao and Efimov, we use this result to prove the quantum positivity conjecture for cluster mutations for all q…
In his paper \cite{MR1}, Markus Reineke proposed a conjecture that there exists a stable weight system $Θ$ for every indecomposable representation of Dynkin type quiver. In this paper, we showed this conjecture is true for quivers of $A_n$-type by combinatorial construction of a special weight system. We also reinterpret this weight system in terms of semi-invariant theory.
