This article is based on my lecture notes from summer schools at the Universities of Utah (June 2007) and Warwick (September 2007). We provide an introduction to explicit methods in the study of moduli spaces of quiver representations and derived categories arising in toric geometry. The first main goal is to present the noncommutative geometric approach to semiprojective toric varieties via quivers. To achieve this, we use geometric invariant theory to construct both semiprojective toric varieties and moduli spaces of quiver representations. The second main goal builds on the first by presenting an introduction to explicit methods in derived categories of coherent sheaves in toric geometry. We recall the notion of tilting bundles with examples, and describe the McKay correspondence as a derived equivalence in some detail following Bridgeland, King and Reid. We also describe extensions of their result beyond the $G$-Hilbert scheme to other fine moduli spaces of bound quiver representations.
This paper proves that every projective toric variety is the fine moduli space for stable representations of an appropriate bound quiver. To accomplish this, we study the quiver $Q$ with relations $R$ corresponding to the finite-dimensional algebra $\bigl(\bigoplus_{i=0}^{r} L_i \bigr)$ where $\mathcal{L} := (\mathscr{O}_X,L_1, ...c, L_r)$ is a list of line bundles on a projective toric variety $X$. The quiver $Q$ defines a smooth projective toric variety, called the multilinear series $|\mathcal{L}|$, and a map $X \to |\mathcal{L}|$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the indu…
Toric quiver varieties (moduli spaces of quiver representations) are studied. Given a quiver and a weight there is an associated quasiprojective toric variety together with a canonical embedding into projective space. It is shown that for a quiver with no oriented cycles the homogeneous ideal of this embedded projective variety is generated by elements of degree at most $3$. In each fixed dimension $d$ up to isomorphism there are only finitely many $d$-dimensional toric quiver varieties. A procedure for their classification is outlined.
We study smoothness of toric quiver varieties. When a quiver $Q$ is defined with the identity dimension vector, the corresponding quiver variety is also a toric variety. So it has both fan representation and quiver representation. We work only on quivers with canonical weight and we classify smooth such toric quiver varieties. We show that a variety corresponding to a quiver with the identity dimension vector and the canonical weight is smooth if and only if it is a product of projective spaces or their blowups.
Given a collection of line bundles on a complete toric variety, the Macaulay2 package QuiversToricVarieties contains functions to construct its quiver of sections and check whether the collection is strong exceptional. It contains a database of full strong exceptional collections of line bundles for smooth Fano toric varieties of dimension less than or equal to 4.
It is shown that up to dimension four, the toric ideal of a quiver polytope is generated in degree two, with the only exception of the four-dimensional Birkhoff polytope. As a consequence, Bøgvad's conjecture holds for quiver polytopes of dimension at most four. In arbitrary dimension, the toric ideal of a compressed polytope is generated in degree two if the polytope has no neighbouring singular vertices. Furthermore, the toric ideal of a compressed polytope with at most one singular vertex has a quadratic Gröbner basis.
We present a review on the recently discovered link between the Lie theory, the theory of quiver Grassmannians, and various degenerations of flag varieties. Our starting point is the induced Poincaré--Birkhoff--Witt filtration on the highest weight representations and the corresponding PBW degenerate flag varieties.
For a quiver $Q$, we take $\mathcal{M}$ an associated toric Nakajima quiver variety and $Γ$ the underlying graph. In this article, we give a direct relation between a specialisation of the Tutte polynomial of $Γ$, the Kac polynomial of $Q$ and the Poincaré polynomial of $\mathcal{M}$. We do this by giving a cell decomposition of $\mathcal{M}$ indexed by spanning trees of $Γ$ and `geometrising' the deletion and contraction operators on graphs. These relations have been previously established by Sturmfels-Hausel and (Crawley-Boovey)-Van den Bergh, however the methods here are more hands-on.
We prove that every toric quiver flag variety $Y$ is isomorphic to a fine moduli space of cyclic modules over the algebra $\text{End}(T)$ for some tilting bundle $T$ on $Y$. This generalises the well known fact that $\mathbb{P}^n$ can be recovered from the endomorphism algebra of $\bigoplus_{0\leq i\leq n} \mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^n}(i)$.
We review how log Gromov--Witten invariants of toric varieties can be used to express quiver Donaldson--Thomas invariants in terms of the simpler attractor Donaldson--Thomas invariants. This is an exposition of joint work with Pierrick Bousseau.
We construct Mori Dream Spaces as fine moduli spaces of representations of bound quivers, thereby extending results of Craw--Smith \cite{CrawSmith} beyond the toric case. Any collection of effective line bundles $\mathscr{L}=(\mathscr{O}_X, L_1,..., L_r)$ on a Mori Dream Space $X$ defines a bound quiver of sections and a map from $X$ to a toric quiver variety $|\mathscr{L}|$ called the multigraded linear series. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for this map to be a closed immersion and, under additional assumptions on $\mathscr{L}$, the image realises $X$ as the fine moduli space…
The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY $(m+2)$-folds is described by $m$-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence generalizes the connection between CY $(m+2)$-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D$(5-2m)$-branes for $m=0,\ldots,3$ to arbitrary $m$. In this paper we introduce the Calabi-Yau product, a new algorithm that starting from the known quiver theories for a pair of toric CY$_{m+2}$ and CY$_{n+2}$ produces the quiver theory for a related CY$_{m+n+3}$. This method significantly supersedes existing ones, enabling the simple determination of quiv…
Starting from a collection of line bundles on a projective toric orbifold X, we introduce a stacky analogue of the classical linear series. Our first main result extends work of King by building moduli stacks of refined representations of labelled quivers. We associate one such stack to any collection of line bundles on X to obtain our notion of a stacky linear series; as in the classical case, X maps to the ambient stack by evaluating sections of line bundles in the collection. As a further application, we describe a finite sequence of GIT wall crossings between [A^n/G] and G-Hilb(A^n) for a …
Let Q be a finite quiver without oriented cycles. Denote by U --> M the fine moduli space of stable thin sincere representations of Q with respect to the canonical stability notion. We prove Ext^i(U,U) = 0 for all i >0 and compute the endomorphism algebra of the universal bundle U. Moreover, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for when this algebra is isomorphic to the path algebra kQ of the quiver Q. If so, then the bounded derived category of finitely generated right kQ-modules is embedded into that of coherent sheaves on M.
The open string sector of the topological B-model model on CY $(m+2)$-folds is described by $m$-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence extends to general $m$ the well known connection between CY $(m+2)$-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D$(5-2m)$-branes for $m=0,\ldots, 3$. We introduce $m$-dimers, which fully encode the $m$-graded quivers and their superpotentials, in the case in which the CY $(m+2)$-folds are toric. Generalizing the well known $m=1,2$ cases, $m$-dimers significantly simplify the connection between geometry and $m$-graded quivers. A key result o…
We first construct a derived equivalence between a small crepant resolution of an affine toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold and a certain quiver with a superpotential. Under this derived equivalence we establish a wall-crossing formula for the generating function of the counting invariants of perverse coherent systems. As an application we provide certain equations on Donaldson-Thomas, Pandeharipande-Thomas and Szendroi's invariants. Finally, we show that moduli spaces associated with a quiver given by successive mutations are realized as the moduli spaces associated the original quiver by changing the s…
We introduce brane brick models, a novel type of Type IIA brane configurations consisting of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane. Brane brick models are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. They fully encode the infinite class of 2d (generically) N=(0,2) gauge theories on the worldvolume of the D1-branes and streamline their connection to the probed geometries. For this purpose, we also introduce new combinatorial procedures for deriving the Calabi-Yau associated to a given gauge theory and vice versa.
We present an algorithm that finds all toric noncommutative crepant resolutions of a given toric 3-dimensional Gorenstein singularity. The algorithm embeds the quivers of these algebras inside a real 3-dimensional torus such that the relations are homotopy relations. One can project these embedded quivers down to a 2-dimensional torus to obtain the corresponding dimer models. We discuss some examples and use the algorithm to show that all toric noncommutative crepant resolutions of a finite quotient of the conifold singularity can be obtained by mutating one basic dimer model. We also discuss …
Dimer models have been used in string theory to construct path algebras with relations that are 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau Algebras. These constructions result in algebras that share some specific properties: they are finitely generated modules over their centers and their representation spaces are toric varieties. In order to describe these algebras we introduce the notion of a toric order and show that all toric orders which are 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau algebras can be constructed from dimer models on a torus. Toric orders are examples of a much broader class of algebras: positively graded can…
We initiate a systematic investigation of the space of 2+1 dimensional quiver gauge theories, emphasising a succinct "forward algorithm". Few "order parametres" are introduced such as the number of terms in the superpotential and the number of gauge groups. Starting with two terms in the superpotential, we find a generating function, with interesting geometric interpretation, which counts the number of inequivalent theories for a given number of gauge groups and fields. We demonstratively list these theories for some low numbers thereof. Furthermore, we show how these theories arise from M2-br…
These lecture notes consist of an introduction to moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, with a strong emphasis placed on examples related to the theory of quiver representations. The goal is to provide the background necessary to understand the construction of the moduli spaces of stable and semistable quiver representations due to King, Nakajima's quiver varieties, as well as some 'quiver versions' of existing moduli spaces of algebra-geometric objects.
Two geometric interpretations of the bar automorphism in the positive part of a quantized enveloping algebra are given. The first is in terms of numbers of rational points over finite fields of quiver analogues of orbital varieties; the second is in terms of a duality of constructible functions provided by preprojective varieties of quivers.
Given a quiver, Nakajima introduced the quiver variety and the Hecke correspondence, which is a closed subvariety of Cartesian products of quiver varieties. In this paper, we consider two nested quiver varieties as fiber products of Hecke correspondences along natural projections. After blowing up the diagonal, we prove that they are isomorphic to a quadruple moduli space which Neguţ observed for the Jordan quiver. The main ingredient is Jiang's derived projectivization theory and Hekking's derived blow-up theory, while we obtain the local model when both the two derived schemes are quasi-smoo…
Let $X$ be a toric Fano manifold and denote by $Crit(f_X) \subset (\mathbb{C}^{\ast})^n$ the solution scheme of the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg system of equations. For toric Del-Pezzo surfaces and various toric Fano threefolds we define a map $L : Crit(f_X) \rightarrow Pic(X)$ such that $\mathcal{E}_L(X) : = L(Crit(f_X)) \subset Pic(X)$ is a full strongly exceptional collection of line bundles. We observe the existence of a natural monodromy map $$ M : π_1(L(X) \setminus R_X,f_X) \rightarrow Aut(Crit(f_X))$$ where $L(X)$ is the space of all Laurent polynomials whose Newton polytope is equal…
We construct a statistical model of crystal melting to count BPS bound states of D0 and D2 branes on a single D6 brane wrapping an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau threefold. The three-dimensional crystalline structure is determined by the quiver diagram and the brane tiling which characterize the low energy effective theory of D branes. The crystal is composed of atoms of different colors, each of which corresponds to a node of the quiver diagram, and the chemical bond is dictated by the arrows of the quiver diagram. BPS states are constructed by removing atoms from the crystal. This generalizes th…
For a finite abelian group G in GL(n,k), we describe the coherent component Y_theta of the moduli space M_theta of theta-stable McKay quiver representations. This is a not-necessarily-normal toric variety that admits a projective birational morphism to A^n/G obtained by variation of GIT quotient. As a special case, this gives a new construction of Nakamura's G-Hilbert scheme that avoids the (typically highly singular) Hilbert scheme of |G|-points in A^n. To conclude, we describe the toric fan of Y_theta and hence calculate the quiver representation corresponding to any point of Y_theta.
Given a quiver with potential associated to a toric Calabi-Yau threefold, the numerical Donaldson-Thomas invariants for the moduli space of framed representations can be computed by using toric localization, which reduces the problem to the enumeration of molten crystals. We provide a refinement of this localization procedure, which allows to compute motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants. Using this approach, we prove a universal formula which gives the BPS invariants of any toric quiver, up to undetermined contributions which are invariant under Poincaré duality. When the toric Calabi-Yau three…
We find a new infinite class of infinite-dimensional algebras acting on BPS states for non-compact toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. In Type IIA superstring compactification on a toric Calabi-Yau threefold, the D-branes wrapping holomorphic cycles represent the BPS states, and the fixed points of the moduli spaces of BPS states are described by statistical configurations of crystal melting. Our algebras are "bootstrapped" from the molten crystal configurations, hence they act on the BPS states. We discuss the truncation of the algebra and its relation with D4-branes. We illustrate our results in ma…
We give a sufficient condition for the moduli space of quiver representations associated with a dimer model to be smooth for a general stability parameter. We also show that the moduli space in this case is a crepant resolution of the toric variety determined by the Newton polygon of the characteristic polynomial.
We study the refined and unrefined crystal/BPS partition functions of D6-D2-D0 brane bound states for all toric Calabi-Yau threefolds without compact 4-cycles and some non-toric examples. They can be written as products of (generalized) MacMahon functions. We check our expressions and use them as vacuum characters to study the gluings. We then consider the wall crossings and discuss possible crystal descriptions for different chambers. We also express the partition functions in terms of plethystic exponentials. For $\mathbb{C}^3$ and tripled affine quivers, we find their connections to nilpote…
We develop a systematic and efficient method of counting single-trace and multi-trace BPS operators with two supercharges, for world-volume gauge theories of $N$ D-brane probes for both $N \to \infty$ and finite $N$. The techniques are applicable to generic singularities, orbifold, toric, non-toric, complete intersections, et cetera, even to geometries whose precise field theory duals are not yet known. The so-called ``Plethystic Exponential'' provides a simple bridge between (1) the defining equation of the Calabi-Yau, (2) the generating function of single-trace BPS operators and (3) the gene…
We introduce a class of new algebras, the shifted quiver Yangians, as the BPS algebras for type IIA string theory on general toric Calabi-Yau three-folds. We construct representations of the shifted quiver Yangian from general subcrystals of the canonical crystal. We derive our results via equivariant localization for supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics for various framed quivers, where the framings are determined by the shape of the subcrystals. Our results unify many known BPS state counting problems, including open BPS counting, non-compact D4-branes, and wall crossing phenomena, simply…
We investigate the connections between flavored quivers, dimer models, and BPS pyramids for generic toric Calabi-Yau threefolds from various perspectives. We introduce a purely field theoretic definition of both finite and infinite pyramids in terms of quivers with flavors. These pyramids are associated to the counting of BPS invariants for generic toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. We discuss how cluster transformations provide an efficient recursive method for computing pyramid partition functions and show that the recursion is equivalent to the multidimensional octahedron recurrence. Transitions …
We use homogeneous spectra of multigraded rings to construct toric embeddings of a large family of projective varieties which preserve some of the birational geometry of the underlying variety, generalizing the well-known construction associated to Mori Dream Spaces.
We develop an algebro-geometric formulation for neural networks in machine learning using the moduli space of framed quiver representations. We find natural Hermitian metrics on the universal bundles over the moduli which are compatible with the GIT quotient construction by the general linear group, and show that their Ricci curvatures give a Kähler metric on the moduli. Moreover, we use toric moment maps to construct activation functions, and prove the universal approximation theorem for the multi-variable activation function constructed from the complex projective space.
Toric geometry provides a bridge between algebraic geometry and combinatorics of fans and polytopes. For each polarized toric variety (X,L) we have associated a polytope P. In this thesis we use this correspondence to study birational geometry for toric varieties. To this end, we address subjects such as Minimal Model Program, Mori fiber spaces, and chamber structures on the cone of effective divisors. We translate some results from these theories to the combinatorics of polytopes and use them to get structure theorems on space of polytopes. In particular, we treat toric varieties known as 2-F…
These notes are based on a series of lectures given by the author at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. Addressed topics include affine and projective toric varieties, abstract normal toric varieties from fans, divisors on toric varieties and Cox's construction of a toric variety as a GIT quotient. We emphasize the role of toric varieties in solving systems of polynomial equations and provide many computational examples using the Julia package Oscar.jl.
Bernardi and Tirabassi show the existence of full strong exceptional collections consisting of line bundles on smooth toric Fano $3$-folds under assuming Bondal's conjecture, which states that the Frobenius push-forward of the structure sheaf $\mc O_X$ generates the derived category $D^b(X)$ for smooth projective toric varieties $X$. In this article, we show Bondal's conjecture for smooth toric Fano $3$-folds and also improve their result, using birational geometry.
We discuss an experimental approach to open problems in toric geometry: are smooth projective toric varieties (i) projectively normal and (ii) defined by degree 2 equations? We discuss the creation of lattice polytopes defining smooth toric varieties as well as algorithms checking properties (i) and (ii) and further potential properties, in Particular a weaker version of (ii) asking for scheme-theoretic definition in degree 2.
We discuss the behavior of Landau-Ginzburg models for toric orbifolds near the large volume limit. This enables us to express mirror symmetry as an isomorphism of Frobenius manifolds which aquire logarithmic poles along a boundary divisor. If the toric orbifold admits a crepant resolution we construct a global moduli space on the B-side and show that the associated tt^*-geometry exists globally.
The real solutions to a system of sparse polynomial equations may be realized as a fiber of a projection map from a toric variety. When the toric variety is orientable, the degree of this map is a lower bound for the number of real solutions to the system of equations. We strengthen previous work by characterizing when the toric variety is orientable. This is based on work of Nakayama and Nishimura, who characterized the orientability of smooth real toric varieties.
Extending work of Bielawski-Dancer and Konno, we develop a theory of toric hyperkahler varieties, which involves toric geometry, matroid theory and convex polyhedra. The framework is a detailed study of semi-projective toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of affine spaces by torus actions, and specifically, of Lawrence toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of even-dimensional affine spaces by symplectic torus actions. A toric hyperkahler variety is a complete intersection in a Lawrence toric variety. Both varieties are non-compact, and they share the same cohomology ring, namely, the Stanle…
This paper will appear in the Proceedings of the 1995 Santa Cruz Summer Institute. The paper is a survey of recent developments in the theory of toric varieties, including new constructions of toric varieties and relations to symplectic geometry, combinatorics and mirror symmetry.
We formulate a mathematical setup for computational neural networks using noncommutative algebras and near-rings, in motivation of quantum automata. We study the moduli space of the corresponding framed quiver representations, and find moduli of Euclidean and non-compact types in light of uniformization.
A supersymmetric quantum mechanical model is constructed for BPS states bound to surface operators in five dimensional SU(r) gauge theories using D-brane engineering. This model represents the effective action of a certain D2-brane configuration, and is naturally obtained by dimensional reduction of a quiver $(0,2)$ gauged linear sigma model. In a special stability chamber, the resulting moduli space of quiver representations is shown to be virtually smooth and isomorphic to a moduli space of framed quotients on the projective plane. A precise conjecture relating a K-theoretic partition functi…
The paper includes a new proof of the fact that quiver Grassmannians associated with rigid representations of Dynkin quivers do not have cohomology in odd degrees. Moreover, it is shown that they do not have torsion in homology. A new proof of the Caldero--Chapoton formula is provided. As a consequence a new proof of the positivity of cluster monomials in the acyclic clusters associated with Dynkin quivers is obtained. The methods used here are based on joint works with Markus Reineke and Evgeny Feigin.
We analyze B-type D-branes on noncompact toric Calabi--Yau spaces. A general program is presented to find a set of tilting line bundles that yields the associated quiver and its relations. In many cases, this set remains fixed as one moves between phases in the Kähler moduli space. This gives a particularly simple picture of how the derived category remains invariant across all phases. The combinatorial problems involving local cohomology used to determine the tilting set are also related to questions of Pi-stability as one moves between phases. As a result, in some cases precisely those line …
