Original paper was expanded and split in 2. The is the first part which discusses quiver polyhedra and how they arise from CY3-algebras. The second part discusses consistency conditions and is called 'Consistency conditions for dimer models'
Dimer models have been used in string theory to construct path algebras with relations that are 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau Algebras. These constructions result in algebras that share some specific properties: they are finitely generated modules over their centers and their representation spaces are toric varieties. In order to describe these algebras we introduce the notion of a toric order and show that all toric orders which are 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau algebras can be constructed from dimer models on a torus.
Toric orders are examples of a much broader class of algebras: positively graded cancellation algebras. For these algebras the CY-3 condition implies the existence of a weighted quiver polyhedron, which is an extension of dimer models obtained by replacing the torus with any two-dimensional compact orientable orbifold.
This note gives a one-to-one correspondence between the equivalence classes of a certain type of 2-dimensional Calabi-Yau categories, and certain type of quivers, This is an analogue of the result in Stability structures, motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants and cluster transformations, arXiv: 0811.2435, by M. Kontsevich, Y. Soibelman.
The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY $(m+2)$-folds is described by $m$-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence generalizes the connection between CY $(m+2)$-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D$(5-2m)$-branes for $m=0,\ldots,3$ to arbitrary $m$. In this paper we introduce the Calabi-Yau product, a new algorithm that starting from the known quiver theories for a pair of toric CY$_{m+2}$ and CY$_{n+2}$ produces the quiver theory for a related CY$_{m+n+3}$. This method significantly supersedes existing ones, enabling the simple determination of quiv…
We present a method based on mutations of helices which leads to the construction (in the large volume limit) of exceptional coherent sheaves associated with the $(\sum_al_a=0)$ orbits in Gepner models. This is explicitly verified for a few examples including some cases where the ambient weighted projective space has singularities not inherited by the Calabi-Yau hypersurface. The method is based on two conjectures which lead to the analog,in the general case, of the Beilinson quiver for $\BP^n$. We discuss how one recovers the McKay quiver using the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) near the or…
According to a recently proposed scheme for the classification of reflexive polyhedra, weight systems of a certain type play a prominent role. These weight systems are classified for the cases $n=3$ and $n=4$, corresponding to toric varieties with K3 and Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces, respectively. For $n=3$ we find the well known 95 weight systems corresponding to weighted $\IP^3$'s that allow transverse polynomials, whereas for $n=4$ there are 184026 weight systems, including the 7555 weight systems for weighted $\IP^4$'s. It is proven (without computer) that the Newton polyhedra corresponding t…
For any given dimension $d$, all reflexive $d$-polytopes can be found (in principle) as subpolytopes of a number of maximal polyhedra that are defined in terms of $(d+1)$-tuples of integers (weights), or combinations of $k$-tuples of weights with $k<d+1$. We present the results of a complete classification of sextuples of weights pertaining to the construction of all reflexive polytopes in five dimensions. We find 322 383 760 930 such weight systems. 185 269 499 015 of them give rise directly to reflexive polytopes and thereby to mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau fourfolds. These lead to 532 600 483 …
The connections amongst (1) quivers whose representation varieties are Calabi-Yau, (2) the combinatorics of bipartite graphs on Riemann surfaces, and (3) the geometry of mirror symmetry have engendered a rich subject at whose heart is the physics of gauge/string theories. We review the various parts of this intricate story in some depth, for a mathematical audience without assumption of any knowledge of physics, emphasizing a plethora of results residing at the intersection between algebraic geometry, representation theory and number theory.
During the last years we have generated a large number of data related to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties which can be described by reflexive polyhedra. We classified all reflexive polyhedra in three dimensions leading to K3 hypersurfaces and have nearly completed the four dimensional case relevant to Calabi-Yau threefolds. In addition, we have analysed for many of the resulting spaces whether they allow fibration structures of the types that are relevant in the context of superstring dualities. In this survey we want to give background information both on how we obtained these dat…
We consider families ${\cal F}(Δ)$ consisting of complex $(n-1)$-dimensional projective algebraic compactifications of $Δ$-regular affine hypersurfaces $Z_f$ defined by Laurent polynomials $f$ with a fixed $n$-dimensional Newton polyhedron $Δ$ in $n$-dimensional algebraic torus ${\bf T} =({\bf C}^*)^n$. If the family ${\cal F}(Δ)$ defined by a Newton polyhedron $Δ$ consists of $(n-1)$-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties, then the dual, or polar, polyhedron $Δ^*$ in the dual space defines another family ${\cal F}(Δ^*)$ of Calabi-Yau varieties, so that we obtain the remarkable duality between two {…
We introduce brane brick models, a novel type of Type IIA brane configurations consisting of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane. Brane brick models are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. They fully encode the infinite class of 2d (generically) N=(0,2) gauge theories on the worldvolume of the D1-branes and streamline their connection to the probed geometries. For this purpose, we also introduce new combinatorial procedures for deriving the Calabi-Yau associated to a given gauge theory and vice versa.

We study tilting for a class of Calabi-Yau algebras associated to helices on Fano varieties. We do this by relating the tilting operation to mutations of exceptional collections. For helices on del Pezzo surfaces the algebras are of dimension three, and using an argument of Herzog, together with results of Kuleshov and Orlov, we obtain a complete description of the tilting process in terms of quiver mutations.
We first construct a derived equivalence between a small crepant resolution of an affine toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold and a certain quiver with a superpotential. Under this derived equivalence we establish a wall-crossing formula for the generating function of the counting invariants of perverse coherent systems. As an application we provide certain equations on Donaldson-Thomas, Pandeharipande-Thomas and Szendroi's invariants. Finally, we show that moduli spaces associated with a quiver given by successive mutations are realized as the moduli spaces associated the original quiver by changing the s…
Let $G$ be a polyhedral group $G\subset SO(3)$ of types $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, $D_{2n}$ and $\mathbb{T}$. We prove that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between flops of $G$-Hilb$\mathbb{C}^3$ and mutations of the McKay quiver with potential which do not mutate the trivial vertex. This correspondence provides two equivalent methods to construct every projective crepant resolution for the singularities $\mathbb{C}^3/G$, which are constructed as moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_C$ of quivers with potential for some chamber $C$ in the space $Θ$ of stability conditions. In addition, we study …
Four dimensional reflexive polyhedra encode the data for smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds that are hypersurfaces in toric varieties, and have important applications both in perturbative and in non-perturbative string theory. We describe how we obtained all 473,800,776 reflexive polyhedra that exist in four dimensions and the 30,108 distinct pairs of Hodge numbers of the resulting Calabi-Yau manifolds. As a by-product we show that all these spaces (and hence the corresponding string vacua) are connected via a chain of singular transitions.
We construct a statistical model of crystal melting to count BPS bound states of D0 and D2 branes on a single D6 brane wrapping an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau threefold. The three-dimensional crystalline structure is determined by the quiver diagram and the brane tiling which characterize the low energy effective theory of D branes. The crystal is composed of atoms of different colors, each of which corresponds to a node of the quiver diagram, and the chemical bond is dictated by the arrows of the quiver diagram. BPS states are constructed by removing atoms from the crystal. This generalizes th…
We study properties of potentials on quivers $Q_{\mathcal{T},m}$ arising from cluster coordinates on moduli spaces of $PGL_{m+1}$-local systems on a topological surface with punctures. To every quiver with potential one can associate a $3d$ Calabi-Yau $A_\infty$-category in such a way that a natural notion of equivalence for quivers with potentials (called "right-equivalence") translates to $A_\infty$-equivalence of associated categories. For any quiver one can define a notion of a "primitive" potential. Our first result is the description of the space of equivalence classes of primitive poten…
We study resolutions of singularities of orbit closures in quiver representations. We consider certain resolutions of singularities which have already been constructed by Reineke, and we determine under which conditions they are crepant. More specifically, we deal with quivers of type A3, An, D4. Then, as an application of the results we have found, we construct several Fano and Calabi-Yau varieties as orbital degeneracy loci.
We study the spectrum of BPS D-branes on a Calabi-Yau manifold using the 0+1 dimensional quiver gauge theory that describes the dynamics of the branes at low energies. The results of Kontsevich and Soibelman predict how the degeneracies change. We argue that Seiberg dualities of the quiver gauge theories, which change the basis of BPS states, correspond to crossing the "walls of the second kind." There is a large class of examples, including local del Pezzo surfaces, where the BPS degeneracies of quivers corresponding to one D6 brane bound to arbitrary numbers of D4, D2 and D0 branes are count…
We propose a construction of string cohomology spaces for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces that arise in Batyrev's mirror symmetry construction. The spaces are defined explicitly in terms of the corresponding reflexive polyhedra in a mirror-symmetric manner. We draw connections with other approaches to the string cohomology, in particular with the work of Chen and Ruan.
We study the BPS particle spectrum of five-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs) on $\mathbb{R}^4\times S^1$ with one-dimensional Coulomb branch, by means of their associated BPS quivers. By viewing these theories as arising from the geometric engineering within M-theory, the quivers are naturally associated to the corresponding local Calabi-Yau threefold. We show that the symmetries of the quiver, descending from the symmetries of the Calabi-Yau geometry, together with the affine root lattice structure of the flavor charges, provide equations for the Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-cros…
In this paper, we will prove that all Batyrev Calabi-Yau threefolds, arising from a small resolution of a generic hyperplane section of a reflexive Fano-Gorenstein fourfold, have finite automorphism group. Together with Morrison conjecture, this suggests that Batyrev Calabi-Yau threefolds should have a polyhedral Kahler (ample) cone.
In this paper, we study the space of stability conditions on a certain $N$-Calabi-Yau ($\text{CY}_N$) category associated to an $A_n$-quiver. Recently, Bridgeland and Smith constructed stability conditions on some $\text{CY}_3$ categories from meromorphic quadratic differentials with simple zeros. Generalizing their results to higher dimensional Calabi-Yau categories, we describe the space of stability conditions as the universal cover of the space of polynomials of degree $n+1$ with simple zeros. In particular, central charges of stability conditions on $\text{CY}_N$ categories are constructe…
Reflexive polyhedra encode the combinatorial data for mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties. We investigate the geometrical structures of circumscribed polytopes with a minimal number of facets and of inscribed polytopes with a minimal number of vertices. These objects, which constrain reflexive pairs of polyhedra from the interior and the exterior, can be described in terms of certain non-negative integral matrices. A major tool in the classification of these matrices is the existence of a pair of weight systems, indicating a relation to weighted projective spaces. This …
We propose a combinatorical duality for lattice polyhedra which conjecturally gives rise to the pairs of mirror symmetric families of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric Fano varieties with Gorenstein singularities. Our construction is a generalization of the polar duality proposed by Batyrev for the case of hypersurfaces.
We compute motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants for crepant resolutions of quotients of affine three-space by even dihedral groups in terms of an affine type D root system, using double dimensional reduction and the representation theory of affine type D quivers.
Kreuzer and Skarke famously produced the largest known database of Calabi-Yau threefolds by providing a complete construction of all 473,800,776 reflexive polyhedra that exist in four dimensions. These polyhedra describe the singular limits of ambient toric varieties in which Calabi-Yau threefolds can exist as hypersurfaces. In this paper, we review how to extract topological and geometric information about Calabi-Yau threefolds using the toric construction, and we provide, in a companion online database (see http://nuweb1.neu.edu/cydatabase), a detailed inventory of these quantities which are…
We study quivers with potential (QPs) whose Jacobian algebras are finite dimensional selfinjective. They are an analogue of the `good QPs' studied by Bocklandt whose Jacobian algebras are 3-Calabi-Yau. We show that 2-representation-finite algebras are truncated Jacobian algebras of selfinjective QPs, which are factor algebras of Jacobian algebras by certain sets of arrows called cuts. We show that selfinjectivity of QPs is preserved under successive mutation with respect to orbits of the Nakayama permutation. We give a sufficient condition for all truncated Jacobian algebras of a fixed QP to b…
In this paper, we prove the categorical wall-crossing formula for certain quivers containing the three loop quiver, which we call DT/PT quivers. These quivers appear as Ext-quivers for the wall-crossing of DT/PT moduli spaces on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The resulting formula is a semiorthogonal decomposition which involves quasi-BPS categories studied in our previous papers, and we regard it as a categorical analogue of the numerical DT/PT correspondence. As an application, we prove a categorical DT/PT correspondence for sheaves supported on reduced plane curves in the affine three dimensional spac…
We give an overview of recent work on Dirichlet branes on Calabi-Yau threefolds which makes contact with Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry proposal, proposes a new definition of stability which is appropriate in string theory, and provides concrete quiver categories equivalent to certain categories of branes on CY. To appear in the proceedings of the 3rd European Congress of Mathematics.
We study the BPS invariants of the preferred Calabi-Yau resolution of ADE polyhedral singularities C^3/G given by Nakamura's G-Hilbert schemes. Genus 0 BPS invariants are defined by means of the moduli space of torsion sheaves as proposed by Sheldon Katz. We show that these invariants are equal to half the number of certain positive roots of an ADE root system associated to G. This is in agreement with the prediction via Gromov-Witten theory.
We find a new infinite class of infinite-dimensional algebras acting on BPS states for non-compact toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. In Type IIA superstring compactification on a toric Calabi-Yau threefold, the D-branes wrapping holomorphic cycles represent the BPS states, and the fixed points of the moduli spaces of BPS states are described by statistical configurations of crystal melting. Our algebras are "bootstrapped" from the molten crystal configurations, hence they act on the BPS states. We discuss the truncation of the algebra and its relation with D4-branes. We illustrate our results in ma…
We investigate the connections between flavored quivers, dimer models, and BPS pyramids for generic toric Calabi-Yau threefolds from various perspectives. We introduce a purely field theoretic definition of both finite and infinite pyramids in terms of quivers with flavors. These pyramids are associated to the counting of BPS invariants for generic toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. We discuss how cluster transformations provide an efficient recursive method for computing pyramid partition functions and show that the recursion is equivalent to the multidimensional octahedron recurrence. Transitions …
We consider 3-dimensional toric Calabi-Yau singularities which arise as cones over the Chow quotient for a torus acting on projective space. We show that the Chow forms of the closures of the codimension 2 orbits can very easily be written down from the quiver with superpotential which corresponds with the given CY3 singularity under the correspondence between CY3 singularities and quivers with superpotential which is part of the AdS/CFT correspondence in physics. We also prove that this provides a new method for computing the principal A-determinant in the theory of Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsk…
Let $Γ$ be a finite group acting linearly on $\C^n$, freely outside the origin. In previous work a generalisation of Kronheimer's construction of moduli of Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles with certain invariance properties was given. This produced varieties $X_ζ$ (parameterised by $ζ\in\Q^N$) which are partial resolutions of $\C^n/Γ$. In this article, it is shown the same $X_ζ$ can be described as moduli spaces of representations of the McKay quiver associated to the action of $Γ$. It it shown that, for abelian groups, $X_ζ$ are toric varieties defined by convex polyhedra which are the solution s…
We introduce some new algebraic structures arising naturally in the geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and mirror symmetry. We give a universal construction of Calabi-Yau algebras in terms of a noncommutative symplectic DG algebra resolution. In dimension 3, the resolution is determined by a noncommutative potential. Representation varieties of the Calabi-Yau algebra are intimately related to the set of critical points, and to the sheaf of vanishing cycles of the potential. Numerical invariants, like ranks of cyclic homology groups, are expected to be given by `matrix integrals' over representat…
The statistical model of crystal melting represents BPS configurations of D-branes on a toric Calabi-Yau three-fold. Recently it has been noticed that an infinite-dimensional algebra, the quiver Yangian, acts consistently on the crystal-melting configurations. We physically derive the algebra and its action on the BPS states, starting with the effective supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics on the D-brane worldvolume. This leads to remarkable combinatorial identities involving equivariant integrations on the moduli space of the quantum mechanics, which can be checked by numerical computation…
We present results from an inductive algebraic approach to the systematic construction and classification of the `lowest-level' CY3 spaces defined as zeroes of polynomial loci associated with reflexive polyhedra, derived from suitable vectors in complex projective spaces. These CY3 spaces may be sorted into `chains' obtained by combining lower-dimensional projective vectors classified previously. We analyze all the 4242 (259, 6, 1) two- (three-, four-, five-) vector chains, which have, respectively, K3 (elliptic, line-segment, trivial) sections, yielding 174767 (an additional 6189, 1582, 199) …
We present an inductive algebraic approach to the systematic construction and classification of generalized Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds in different numbers of complex dimensions, based on Batyrev's formulation of CY manifolds as toric varieties in weighted complex projective spaces associated with reflexive polyhedra. We show how the allowed weight vectors in lower dimensions may be extended to higher dimensions, emphasizing the roles of projection and intersection in their dual description, and the natural appearance of Cartan-Lie algebra structures. The 50 allowed extended four-dimensional ve…
We prove the general diagram method theorem valid for the quite large class of 3-folds with Q-factorial singularities (see Basic Theorem 1.3.2 and also Theorem 2.2.6). This gives the generalization of our results about Fano 3-folds with Q-factorial terminal singularities (Preprint alg-geom/9311007). As an application, we get the following result about 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds X: Assume that the Picard number ρ(X) > 93. Then one of two cases (i) or (ii) holds: (i) there exists a small extremal ray on X; (ii) There exists a nef element h such that h^3=0 (thus, the nef cone NEF(X) and t…
We introduce a class of new algebras, the shifted quiver Yangians, as the BPS algebras for type IIA string theory on general toric Calabi-Yau three-folds. We construct representations of the shifted quiver Yangian from general subcrystals of the canonical crystal. We derive our results via equivariant localization for supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics for various framed quivers, where the framings are determined by the shape of the subcrystals. Our results unify many known BPS state counting problems, including open BPS counting, non-compact D4-branes, and wall crossing phenomena, simply…
We introduce a special class of convex rational polyhedral cones which allows to construct generalized Calabi-Yau varieties of dimension $(d + 2(r-1))$, where $r$ is a positive integer and d is the dimension of critical string vacua with central chatge $c = 3d$. It is conjectured that the natural combinatorial duality satisfies by these cones corresponds to the mirror involution. Using the theory of toric varieties, we show that our conjecture includes as special cases all already known examples of mirror pairs proposed by physicists and agrees with previous conjectures of the authors concerni…
For the Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$ constructed by C. Schoen as fiber products of generic rational elliptic surfaces, we show that the action of the automorphism group of $X$ on the Kähler cone of $X$ has a rationally polyhedral fundamental domain. The second author has conjectured that this statement will hold in general, the example presented here being the first non-trivial case in which the statement has been checked. The conjecture was motivated by the desire to use a construction of E. Looijenga to compactify certain moduli spaces which arise in the study of conformal field theory and ``mi…
We study BPS spectra of D-branes on local Calabi-Yau threefolds $\mathcal{O}(-p)\oplus\mathcal{O}(p-2)\to \mathbb{P}^1$ with $p=0,1$, corresponding to $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ and the resolved conifold. Nonabelianization for exponential networks is applied to compute directly unframed BPS indices counting states with D2 and D0 brane charges. Known results on these BPS spectra are correctly reproduced by computing new types of BPS invariants of 3d-5d BPS states, encoded by nonabelianization, through their wall-crossing. We also develop the notion of exponential BPS graphs for the simplest …
Let $X$ be a compact complex Calabi-Yau 4-fold. Under certain assumptions, we define Donaldson-Thomas type deformation invariants ($DT_{4}$ invariants) by studying moduli spaces of solutions to the Donaldson-Thomas equations on $X$. We also study sheaves counting problems on local Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We relate $DT_{4}$ invariants of $K_{Y}$ to the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the associated Fano 3-fold $Y$. When the Calabi-Yau 4-fold is toric, we adapt the virtual localization formula to define the corresponding equivariant $DT_{4}$ invariants. We also discuss the non-commutative version of …
Given a brane tiling, that is a bipartite graph on a torus, we can associate with it a quiver potential and a quiver potential algebra. Under certain consistency conditions on a brane tiling, we prove a formula for the Donaldson-Thomas type invariants of the moduli space of framed cyclic modules over the corresponding quiver potential algebra. We relate this formula with the counting of perfect matchings of the periodic plane tiling corresponding to the brane tiling. We prove that the same consistency conditions imply that the quiver potential algebra is a 3-Calabi-Yau algebra. We also formula…
We prove the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for klt Calabi-Yau pairs in dimension 2. That is, for a large class of rational surfaces as well as K3 surfaces and abelian surfaces, the action of the automorphism group of the surface on the convex cone of ample divisors has a rational polyhedral fundamental domain. More concretely: there many be infinitely many curves with negative self-intersection on the surface, but all such curves fall into finitely many orbits under the automorphism group of the surface. The proof uses the geometry of groups acting on hyperbolic space. We deduce a characte…
We analyze B-type D-branes on noncompact toric Calabi--Yau spaces. A general program is presented to find a set of tilting line bundles that yields the associated quiver and its relations. In many cases, this set remains fixed as one moves between phases in the Kähler moduli space. This gives a particularly simple picture of how the derived category remains invariant across all phases. The combinatorial problems involving local cohomology used to determine the tilting set are also related to questions of Pi-stability as one moves between phases. As a result, in some cases precisely those line …
