This paper investigates a new family of special functions referred to as hypergeometric zeta functions. Derived from the integral representation of the classical Riemann zeta function, hypergeometric zeta functions exhibit many properties analogous to their classical counterpart, including the intimate connection to Bernoulli numbers. These new properties are treated in detail and are used to demonstrate a functional inequality satisfied by second-order hypergeometric zeta functions.
Some zero-free regions were known on the right half of the complex plane in the form of vertical strips for fractional hypergeometric zeta functions. In this paper, we describe and demonstrate zero free regions on the left half of the complex plane for fractional hypergeometric zeta functions. The fractional hypergeometric zeta function of order $a$ has no zeros to the left half of the complex plane except the trivial zeros on the real axis.
An unpublished identity of Gosper restates a hypergeometric identity for odd zeta values in terms of an infinite product of matrices. We show that this correspondence runs much deeper, and show that many examples of WZ-accelerated series for zeta values lift to infinite matrix products. We also introduce a new matrix subgroup, the Gosper group, which all of our matrix products fall into.
The hypergeometric zeta function is defined in terms of the zeros of the Kummer function M(a, a + b; z). It is established that this function is an entire function of order 1. The classical factorization theorem of Hadamard gives an expression as an infinite product. This provides linear and quadratic recurrences for the hypergeometric zeta function. A family of associated polynomials is characterized as Appell polynomials and the underlying distribution is given explicitly in terms of the zeros of the associated hypergeometric function. These properties are also given a probabilistic interpre…
The Riemann zeta function at integer arguments can be written as an infinite sum of certain hypergeometric functions and more generally the same can be done with polylogarithms, for which several zeta functions are a special case. An analytic continuation formula for these hypergeometric functions exists and is used to derive some infinite sums which allow the zeta function at integer arguments n to be written as a weighted infinite sum of hypergeometric functions at n - 1. The form might be considered to be a shift operator for the Riemann zeta function which leads to the curious values ζF(0)…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements, $ψ$ a non-zero element of $\mathbb{F}_q$, and $n$ an integer $\geq 3$ prime to $q$. The aim of this article is to show that the zeta function of the projective variety over $\mathbb{F}_q$ defined by $X_ψ\colon x_1^n+...+x_n^n - n ψx_1... x_n=0$ has, when $n$ is prime and $X_ψ$ is non singular (i.e. when $ψ^n \neq 1$), an explicit decomposition in factors coming from affine varieties of odd dimension $\leq n-4$ which are of hypergeometric type. The method we use consists in counting separately the number of points of $X_ψ$ and of some vari…
In this article, we express solutions of the Gauss hypergeometric equation as a series of the multiple polylogarithms by using iterated integral. This representation is the most simple case of a semisimple representation of solutions of the formal KZ equation. Moreover, combining this representation with the connection relations of solutions of the Gauss hypergeometric equation, we obtain various relations of the multiple polylogarithms of one variable and the multiple zeta values.
The purpose of this article is to give an explicit description, in terms of hypergeometric functions over finite fields, of zeta function of a certain type of smooth hypersurfaces that generalizes Dwork family. The point here is that we count the number of rational points employing both character sums and the theory of weights, which enables us to enlighten the calculation of the zeta function.
We describe a solution of the Gauss hypergeometric equation, $F(α,β,γ;z)$ by power series in paramaters $α,β,γ$ whose coefficients are $\Z$ linear combinations of multiple polylogarithms. And using the representation and connection reletions of solutions of the hypergeometric equation, we show some relations of multiple zeta values.
We study the incomplete Mellin transformation of the fractional part and the related log-sine function when composed by an affine complex map. We evaluate the corresponding integral in two different ways which yields equalities with series in hypergeometric functions on each side. These equalities capture basic analytic properties of the Hurwitz zeta function like meromorphic extension and the functional equation. We give rates of convergence for the involved series. As a special case we find that the exponential rate of convergence for the deformation of the log-sine to the fractional part in…
In his work studying the Zeta functions of families of hypersurfaces, Dwork came upon a one-parameter family of hypersurfaces (now known as \emph{the} Dwork family). These examples were not only useful to Dwork in his study of his deformation theory for computing Zeta functions of families, but they have also proven to be extremely useful to physicists working in mirror symmetry. A startling result is that these families are very closely linked to hypergeometric functions. This phenomenon was carefully studied by Dwork and Candelas, de la Ossa, and Rodríguez-Villegas in a few special cases. Dw…
Using some transformation formulas of the generalized hypergeometric series $\,_3F_2$, we give another proof of D. Zagier's evaluation formula of the multiple zeta values $ζ(2,...,2,3,2,...,2)$.
In this paper, the extended double shuffle relations for interpolated multiple zeta values are established. As an application, Hoffman's relations for interpolated multiple zeta values are proved. Furthermore, a generating function for sums of interpolated multiple zeta values of fixed weight, depth and height is represented by hypergeometric functions, and we discuss some special cases.
In this article, we give a proof of the link between the zeta function of two families of hypergeometric curves and the zeta function of a family of quintics that was observed numerically by Candelas, de la Ossa, and Rodriguez Villegas. The method we use is based on formulas of Koblitz and various Gauss sums identities; it does not give any geometric information on the link.
Interpolated multiple $q$-zeta values are deformation of multiple $q$-zeta values with one parameter, $t$, and restore classical multiple zeta values as $t = 0$ and $q \to 1$. In this paper, we discuss generating functions for sum of interpolated multiple $q$-zeta values with fixed weight, depth and $i$-height. The functions are systematically expressed in terms of the basic hypergeometric functions. Compared with the result of Ohno and Zagier, our result includes three generalizations: general height, $q$-deformation and $t$-interpolation. As an application, we prove some expected relations f…
In this paper, we give an elementary account into Zagier's formula for multiple zeta values involving Hoffman elements. Our approach allows us to obtain direct proof in a special case via rational zeta series involving the coefficient $ζ(2n)$. This formula plays an important role in proving Hoffman's conjecture which asserts that every multiple zeta value of weight $k$ can be expressed as a $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combinations of multiple zeta values of the same weight involving $2$'s and $3$'s. Also, using a similar hypergeometric argument via rational zeta series, we produce a new Zagier-type fo…
We prove formulas for special values of the Ramanujan tau zeta function. Our formulas show that $L(Δ, k)$ is a period in the sense of Kontsevich and Zagier when $k\ge12$. As an illustration, we reduce $L(Δ, k)$ to explicit integrals of hypergeometric and algebraic functions when $k\in\{12,13,14,15\}$.
We prove that there is a correspondence between Ramanujan-type formulas for 1/π, and formulas for Dirichlet L-values. The same method also allows us to resolve certain values of the Epstein zeta function in terms of rapidly converging hypergeometric functions. The Epstein zeta functions were previously studied by Glasser and Zucker.
In the 1980's, Greene defined {\it hypergeometric functions over finite fields} using Jacobi sums. The framework of his theory establishes that these functions possess many properties that are analogous to those of the classical hypergeometric series studied by Gauss and Kummer. These functions have played important roles in the study of Apéry-style supercongruences, the Eichler-Selberg trace formula, Galois representations, and zeta-functions of arithmetic varieties. We study the value distribution (over large finite fields) of natural families of these functions. For the $_2F_1$ functions, t…
We initiate the study of spectral zeta functions $ζ_{X}$ for finite and infinite graphs $X$, instead of the Ihara zeta function, with a perspective towards zeta functions from number theory and connections to hypergeometric functions. The Riemann hypothesis is shown to be equivalent to an approximate functional equation of graph zeta functions. The latter holds at all points where Riemann's zeta function $ζ(s)$ is non-zero. This connection arises via a detailed study of the asymptotics of the spectral zeta functions of finite torus graphs in the critcal strip and estimates on the real part of …
We derive an expression for the value $ζ_Q(3)$ of the spectral zeta function $ζ_Q(s)$ studied by Ichinose and Wakayama for the non-commutative harmonic oscillator defined in the work of Parmeggiani and Wakayama using a Gaussian hypergeometric function. In this study, two sequences of rational numbers, denoted $J_2(n)$ and $J_3(n)$, which can be regarded as analogues of the Apéry numbers, naturally arise and play a key role in obtaining the expressions for the values $ζ_Q(2)$ and $ζ_Q(3)$. We also show that the numbers $J_2(n)$ and $J_3(n)$ have congruence relations like those of the Apéry numb…
In this work we present an explicit relation between the number of points on a family of algebraic curves over $\F_{q}$ and sums of values of certain hypergeometric functions over $\F_{q}$. Moreover, we show that these hypergeometric functions can be explicitly related to the roots of the zeta function of the curve over $\F_{q}$ in some particular cases. A general conjecture relating these last two is presented and advances toward its proof are shown in the last section.
The non-commutative harmonic oscillator is a $2\times2$-system of harmonic oscillators with a non-trivial correlation. We write down explicitly the special value at $s=2$ of the spectral zeta function of the non-commutative harmonic oscillator in terms of the complete elliptic integral of the first kind, which is a special case of a hypergeometric function.
We identify the $p$-adic unit roots of the zeta function of a projective hypersurface over a finite field of characteristic $p$ as the eigenvalues of a product of special values of a certain matrix of $p$-adic series. That matrix is a product $F(Λ^p)^{-1}F(Λ)$, where the entries in the matrix $F(Λ)$ are $A$-hypergeometric series with integral coefficients and $F(Λ)$ is independent of $p$.
A new multiple-integral representation of a general family of very-well-poised hypergeometric series is proved. Inspite of an analytic character of the result, it is motivated by the recent arithmetic progress for the values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers. The multiple integrals are of Euler-type and can be viewed as a natural generalization of Beukers' integrals for $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$.
We study the hypergeometric functions associated to five one-parameter deformations of Delsarte K3 quartic hypersurfaces in projective space. We compute all of their Picard--Fuchs differential equations; we count points using Gauss sums and rewrite this in terms of finite field hypergeometric sums; then we match up each differential equation to a factor of the zeta function, and we write this in terms of global L-functions. This computation gives a complete, explicit description of the motives for these pencils in terms of hypergeometric motives.
A general hypergeometric construction of linear forms in (odd) zeta values is presented. The construction allows to recover the records of Rhin and Viola for the irrationality measures of $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, as well as to explain Rivoal's "infinitely-many" result (math.NT/0008051) and to prove that at least one of the four numbers $ζ(5)$, $ζ(7)$, $ζ(9)$, and $ζ(11)$ is irrational.
This paper discusses the simplest examples of spectral zeta functions, especially those associated with graphs, a subject which has not been much studied. The analogy and the similar structure of these functions, such as their parallel definition in terms of the heat kernel and their functional equations, are emphasized. Another theme is to point out various contexts in which these non-classical zeta functions appear. This includes Eisenstein series, the Langlands program, Verlinde formulas, Riemann hypotheses, Catalan numbers, Dedekind sums, and hypergeometric functions. Several open-ended pr…
We prove that if two Calabi-Yau invertible pencils have the same dual weights, then they share a common factor in their zeta functions. By using Dwork cohomology, we demonstrate that this common factor is related to a hypergeometric Picard--Fuchs differential equation. The factor in the zeta function is defined over the rationals and has degree at least the order of the Picard--Fuchs equation. As an application, we relate several pencils of K3 surfaces to the Dwork pencil, obtaining new cases of arithmetic mirror symmetry.

The Stieltjes constants $γ_k$ appear in the regular part of the Laurent expansion of the Riemman and Hurwitz zeta functions. We demonstrate that these coefficients may be written as certain summations over mathematical constants and specialized hypergeometric functions $_pF_{p+1}$. This family of results generalizes a representation of the Euler constant in terms of a summation over values of the trigonometric integrals Si or Ci. The series representations are suitable for acceleration. As byproducts, we evaluate certain sine-logarithm integrals and present the leading asymptotic form of the p…
Based on the WZ method, some series acceleration formulas are given. These formulas allow to write down an infinite family of parametrized identities from any given identity of WZ type. Further, this family, in the case of the Riemann Zeta function, gives rise to many accelerated expressions for $ζ(3)$. The present method produced a formula, given at the end of the paper, that was used recently Sebastian Wedeniwski to compute Apery's constant to more than 32 million digits, holding the present record!
We present a simple but efficient method of calculating Stieltjes constants at a very high level of precision, up to about 80000 significant digits. This method is based on the hypergeometric-like expansion for the Riemann zeta function presented by one of the authors in 1997 \cite{Maslanka 1}. The crucial ingredient in this method is a sequence of high-precision numerical values of the Riemann zeta function computed in equally spaced real arguments, i.e. $ζ(1+\varepsilon),ζ(1+2\varepsilon),ζ(1+3\varepsilon),...$ where $\varepsilon$ is some real parameter. (Practical choice of $\varepsilon$ is…
In 1914, Hardy proved that infinitely many non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function lie on the critical line using the transformation formula of the Jacobi theta function. Recently the first author obtained an integral representation involving the Riemann $Ξ$-function and the confluent hypergeometric function linked to the general theta transformation. Using this result, we show that a series consisting of bounded vertical shifts of a product of the Riemann $Ξ$-function and the real part of a confluent hypergeometric function has infinitely many zeros on the critical line, thereby genera…
This monograph is intended to be considered as my habilitation (D.Sc.) thesis; because of that and as everything has already appeared in English, it is performed exclusively in Russian. The monograph comprises a detailed introduction and seven chapters that represent part of my work influenced by Apéry's proof from 1978 of the irrationality of $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, the values of Riemann's zeta function. Chapter 1 is about "at least one of the four numbers $ζ(5)$, $ζ(7)$, $ζ(9)$ and $ζ(11)$ is irrational" (based in part on arXiv:math.NT/0206176). Chapter 2 explains a connection between the general…
In this paper, we investigate the relationships among hypergeometric series, truncated hypergeometric series, and Gaussian hypergeometric functions through some families of `hypergeometric' algebraic varieties that are higher dimensional analogues of Legendre curves.
We consider the fourteen families $W$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds with one complex structure parameter and Picard-Fuchs equation of hypergeometric type, like the mirror of the quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$. Mirror symmetry identifies the masses of even--dimensional D--branes of the mirror Calabi-Yau $M$ with four periods of the holomorphic $(3,0)$-form over a symplectic basis of $H_3(W,\mathbb{Z})$. It was discovered by Chad Schoen that the singular fiber at the conifold of the quintic gives rise to a Hecke eigenform of weight four under $Γ_0(25)$, whose Hecke eigenvalues are determined by the Hasse-…
We supplement a very recent paper of R. Crandall concerned with the multiprecision computation of several important special functions and numbers. We show an alternative series representation for the Riemann and Hurwitz zeta functions providing analytic continuation through out the whole complex plane. Additionally we demonstrate some series representations for the initial Stieltjes constants appearing in the Laurent expansion of the Hurwitz zeta function. A particular point of elaboration in these developments is the hypergeometric form and its equivalents for certain derivatives of the incom…
In this paper, we introduce degenertae generalized hypergeometric functions and study degenerate hypergeometric numbers of order p. These numbers involving of lambda-binomial coefficients and lambda-falling sequence, and can be represented by means of the degenerate generalized hypergeometric functions. we will derive some explicit expressions and combinatorial identities for those numbers. We also consider several related special numbers like lambda-hypergeometric numbers of order p and Apostol type lambda-hypergeometric numbers of order p, of which the latter reduce in a limiting case to the…
We define finite field $A$-hypergeometric functions and show that they are Fourier expansions of families of exponential sums on the torus. For an appropriate choice of $A$, our finite field $A$-hypergeometric function can be specialized to the finite field ${}_kF_{k-1}$-hypergeometric function defined by McCarthy.
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical numb…
In this paper we establish certain identities connecting $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with 4-th twisted Kloosterman sheaf sum. To prove these identities we express certain character sum over finite field in terms of special values of $p$-adic hypergeometric functions. One conjecture of Evans behaves as a bridge to connect $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with Kloosterman sheaf sum. We also connect $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with Fourier coefficients of certain modular forms.
Finite hypergeometric functions are functions of a finite field ${\bf F}_q$ to ${\bf C}$. They arise as Fourier expansions of certain twisted exponential sums and were introduced independently by John Greene and Nick Katz in the 1980's. They have many properties in common with their analytic counterparts, the hypergeometric functions. One restriction in the definition of finite hypergeometric functions is that the hypergeometric parameters must be rational numbers whose denominators divide $q-1$. In this note we use the symmetry in the hypergeometric parameters and an extension of the exponent…
