In this paper, we introduce degenertae generalized hypergeometric functions and study degenerate hypergeometric numbers of order p. These numbers involving of lambda-binomial coefficients and lambda-falling sequence, and can be represented by means of the degenerate generalized hypergeometric functions. we will derive some explicit expressions and combinatorial identities for those numbers. We also consider several related special numbers like lambda-hypergeometric numbers of order p and Apostol type lambda-hypergeometric numbers of order p, of which the latter reduce in a limiting case to the generalized p-th order Franel numbers.
In a previous paper, Rahmani introduced a new family of p-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials by means of the Gauss hypergeometric function. Motivated by this paper and as a degenerate version of those numbers and polynomials, we introduce the generalized degenerate Bernoulli numbers and polynomials again by using the Gauss hypergeometric function. In addition, we introduce the degenerate type Eulerian numbers as a degenerate version of Eulerian numbers. For the generalized degenerate Bernoulli numbers, we express them in terms of the degenerate Stirling numbers of the second kind, of the degene…
In this paper, we introduce the hypergeometric Euler number as an analogue of the hypergeometric Bernoulli number and the hypergeometric Cauchy number. We study several expressions and sums of products of hypergeometric Euler numbers. We also introduce complementary hypergeometric Euler numbers and give some characteristic properties. There are strong reasons why these hypergeometric numbers are important. The hypergeometric numbers have one of the advantages that yield the natural extensions of determinant expressions of the numbers, though many kinds of generalizations of the Euler numbers h…
Hypergeometric numbers can be recognized as one of the most natural extensions of the classical Cauchy numbers in terms of determinants, though many kinds of generalizations of the Cauchy numbers have been considered by many authors. In addition, there are some relations between the hypergeometric Cauchy numbers and the classical Cauchy numbers. In this paper, we give the determinant expressions of hypergeometric Cauchy numbers and their generalizations, and show some interesting expressions of hypergeometric Cauchy numbers.
In this paper, we give the determinant expressions of the hypergeometric Bernoulli numbers, and some relations between the hypergeometric and the classical Bernoulli numbers which include Kummer's congruences. By applying Trudi's formula, we have some different expressions and inversion relations. We also determine explicit forms of convergents of the generating function of the hypergeometric Bernoulli numbers, from which several identities for hypergeometric Bernoulli numbers are given.
In this note, we shall provide several properties of hypergeometric Bernoulli numbers and polynomials, including sums of products identity, differential equations and recurrence formulas.
We introduce generalized hypergeometric Bernoulli numbers for Dirichlet characters. We study their properties, including relations, expressions and determinants. At the end in Appendix we derive first few expressions of these numbers.
To a torus action on a complex vector space, Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky introduce a system of differential equations, which are now called the GKZ hypergeometric system. Its solutions are GKZ hypergeometric functions. We study the $p$-adic counterpart of the GKZ hypergeometric system. The $p$-adic GKZ hypergeometric complex is a twisted relative de Rham complex of over-convergent differential forms with logarithmic poles. It is an over-holonomic object in the derived category of arithmetic $\mathcal D$-modules with Frobenius structures. Traces of Frobenius on fibers at Techmüller points …
We provide a formula for the number of $\mathbb{F}_{p}$-points on the Dwork hypersurface $$x_1^n + x_2^n \dots + x_n^n - n λ\, x_1 x_2 \dots x_n=0$$ in terms of a $p$-adic hypergeometric function previously defined by the author. This formula holds in the general case, i.e for any $n, λ\in \mathbb{F}_p^{*}$ and for all odd primes $p$, thus extending results of Goodson and Barman et al which hold in certain special cases.
It is a well known result that the number of points over a finite field on the Legendre family of elliptic curves can be written in terms of a hypergeometric function modulo $p$. In this paper, we extend this result, due to Igusa, to a family of monomial deformations of a diagonal hypersurface. We find explicit relationships between the number of points and generalized hypergeometric functions as well as their finite field analogues.
Let $D_λ^d$ denote the family of monomial deformations of diagonal hypersurface over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ given by \begin{align*} D_λ^d: X_1^d+X_2^d+\cdots+X_n^d=λd X_1^{h_1}X_2^{h_2}\cdots X_n^{h_n}, \end{align*} where $d,n\geq2$, $h_i\geq1$, $\sum_{i=1}^n h_i=d$, and $\gcd(d,h_1,h_2,\ldots, h_n)=1$. The Dwork hypersurface is the case when $d=n$, that is, $h_1=h_2=\cdots =h_n=1$. Formulas for the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-points on the Dwork hypersurfaces in terms of McCarthy's $p$-adic hypergeometric functions are known. In this article we provide a formula for the number of $\mathbb…
This paper investigates a new family of special functions referred to as hypergeometric zeta functions. Derived from the integral representation of the classical Riemann zeta function, hypergeometric zeta functions exhibit many properties analogous to their classical counterpart, including the intimate connection to Bernoulli numbers. These new properties are treated in detail and are used to demonstrate a functional inequality satisfied by second-order hypergeometric zeta functions.
We extend our previous work on hypergeometric point count formulas by proving that we can express the number of points on families of Dwork hypersurfaces $$X_λ^d: \hspace{.1in} x_1^d+x_2^d+\ldots+x_d^d=dλx_1x_2\cdots x_d$$ over finite fields of order $q\equiv 1\pmod d$ in terms of Greene's finite field hypergeometric functions. We prove that when $d$ is odd, the number of points can be expressed as a sum of hypergeometric functions plus $(q^{d-1}-1)/(q-1)$ and conjecture that this is also true when $d$ is even. The proof rests on a result that equates certain Gauss sum expressions with finite …
Finite hypergeometric functions are functions of a finite field ${\bf F}_q$ to ${\bf C}$. They arise as Fourier expansions of certain twisted exponential sums and were introduced independently by John Greene and Nick Katz in the 1980's. They have many properties in common with their analytic counterparts, the hypergeometric functions. One restriction in the definition of finite hypergeometric functions is that the hypergeometric parameters must be rational numbers whose denominators divide $q-1$. In this note we use the symmetry in the hypergeometric parameters and an extension of the exponent…
We prove finite field analogues of integral representations of Appell- Lauricella hypergeometric functions in many variables. We consider certain hypersurfaces having a group action and compute the numbers of rational points associated with characters of the group, which will be expressed in terms of Appell-Lauricella functions over finite fields.
We prove a new Bailey-type transformation relating WP-Bailey pairs. We then use this transformation to derive a number of new 3- and 4-term transformation formulae between basic hypergeometric series.
This is a sequel of the paper "A generalization of the Ross symbols in higher K-groups and hypergeometric functions I" where we introduced higher Ross symbols in higher $K$-groups of the hypergeometric schemes, and discussed the Beilinson regulators. In this paper we give its p-adic counterpart and an application to the $p$-adic Beilinson conjecture for K3 surfaces of Picard number 20.
We give an expression for number of points for the family of Dwork K3 surfaces $$X_λ^4: \hspace{.1in} x_1^4+x_2^4+x_3^4+x_4^4=4λx_1x_2x_3x_4$$ over finite fields of order $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$ in terms of Greene's finite field hypergeometric functions. We also develop hypergeometric point count formulas for all odd primes using McCarthy's $p$-adic hypergeometric function. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship between certain period integrals of these surfaces and the trace of Frobenius over finite fields. We extend this work to higher dimensional Dwork hypersurfaces.
Building on the developments of many people including Evans, Greene, Katz, McCarthy, Ono, Roberts, and Rodriguez-Villegas, we consider period functions for hypergeometric type algebraic varieties over finite fields and consequently study hypergeometric functions over finite fields in a manner that is parallel to that of the classical hypergeometric functions. Using a comparison between the classical gamma function and its finite field analogue the Gauss sum, we give a systematic way to obtain certain types of hypergeometric transformation and evaluation formulas over finite fields and interpre…
In this paper, we define the truncated Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers and the truncated Cauchy-Carlitz numbers as analogues of hypergeometric Bernoulli numbers and hypergeometric Cauchy numbers, and as extensions of Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers and the Cauchy-Carlitz numbers. These numbers can be expressed explicitly in terms of incomplete Stirling-Carlitz numbers.
The origin of this study is based on not only explicit formulas of finite sums involving higher powers of binomial coefficients, but also explicit evaluations of generating functions for this sums. It should be emphasized that this study contains both new results and literature surveys about some of the related results that have existed so far. With the aid of hypergeometric function, generating functions for a new family of the combinatorial numbers, related to finite sums of powers of binomial coefficients, are constructed. By using these generating functions, a number of new identities have…
The purpose of this article is to give an explicit description, in terms of hypergeometric functions over finite fields, of zeta function of a certain type of smooth hypersurfaces that generalizes Dwork family. The point here is that we count the number of rational points employing both character sums and the theory of weights, which enables us to enlighten the calculation of the zeta function.
In this paper, we give a formula for the number of rational points on the Dwork hypersurfaces of degree six over finite fields by using Greene's finite-field hypergeometric function, which is a generalization of Goodson's formula for the Dwork hypersurfaces of degree four. Our formula is also a higher-dimensional and a finite field analogue of Matsumoto-Terasoma-Yamazaki's formula. Furthermore, we also explain the relation between our formula and Miyatani's formula.
Let $λ\in \mathbb{Q}\setminus \{0, 1\}$ and $l \geq 2$, and denote by $C_{l,λ}$ the nonsingular projective algebraic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with affine equation given by $$y^l=x(x-1)(x-λ).$$ In this paper we define $Ω(C_{l, λ})$ analogous to the real periods of elliptic curves and find a relation with ordinary hypergeometric series. We also give a relation between the number of points on $C_{l, λ}$ over a finite field and Gaussian hypergeometric series. Finally we give an alternate proof of a result of \cite{rouse}.
In the paper, the author finds an explicit formula for computing Bell numbers in terms of Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions and Stirling numbers of the second kind.
In 2003, Rodriguez-Villegas conjectured four supercongruences on the truncated ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series for certain modular K3 surfaces, which were gradually proved by several authors. Motivated by some supercongruences on combinatorial numbers such as Apéry numbers and Domb numbers, we establish some new supercongruences on the truncated ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series, which extend the four Rodriguez-Villegas supercongruences.
By studying Cameron's operator in terms of determinants, two kinds of "integer" sequences of incomplete numbers were introduced. One was the sequence of restricted numbers, including $s$-step Fibonacci sequences. Another was the sequence of associated numbers, including Lamé sequences of higher order. By the classical Trudi's formula and the inverse relation, more expressions were able to be obtained. These relations and identities can be extended to those of sequence of negative integers or rational numbers. As applications, we consider hypergeometric Bernoulli, Cauchy and Euler numbers with …
Many product formulas are known classically for generalized hypergeometric functions over the complex numbers. In this paper, we establish some analogous formulas for generalized hypergeometric functions over finite fields.
It is known that solutions of the KZ equations can be written in the form of multidimensional hypergeometric integrals. In 2017 in a joint paper of the author with V. Schechtman the construction of hypergeometric solutions was modified, and solutions of the KZ equations modulo a prime number $p$ were constructed. These solutions modulo $p$, called the $p$-hypergeometric solutions, are polynomials with integer coefficients. A general problem is to determine the number of independent $p$-hypergeometric solutions and understand the meaning of that number. In this paper we consider the KZ equation…
For a prime $p\equiv 3\pmod{4}$ and a positive integer $t$, let $q=p^{2t}$. Let $g$ be a primitive element of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. The Peisert graph $P^\ast(q)$ is defined as the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q$ where $ab$ is an edge if and only if $a-b\in\langle g^4\rangle \cup g\langle g^4\rangle$. We provide a formula, in terms of finite field hypergeometric functions, for the number of complete subgraphs of order four contained in $P^\ast(q)$. We also give a new proof for the number of complete subgraphs of order three contained in $P^\ast(q)$ by evaluating certain characte…
We study periods and regulators of a certain class of fibrations of varieties whose relative $H^1$ has multiplication by a number field. Both are written in terms of values of hypergeometric functions ${}_3F_2$ and the former reduces to values of the gamma function, which provide examples of the conjecture of Gross-Deligne.
In this work we present an explicit relation between the number of points on a family of algebraic curves over $\F_{q}$ and sums of values of certain hypergeometric functions over $\F_{q}$. Moreover, we show that these hypergeometric functions can be explicitly related to the roots of the zeta function of the curve over $\F_{q}$ in some particular cases. A general conjecture relating these last two is presented and advances toward its proof are shown in the last section.
We give a method to embed the q-series in a (p,q)-series and derive the corresponding (p,q)-extensions of the known q-identities. The (p,q)-hypergeometric series, or twin-basic hypergeometric series (diferent from the usual bibasic hypergeometric series), is based on the concept of twin-basic number [n]_{p,q} = (p^n - q^n)/(p-q). This twin-basic number occurs in the theory of two-parameter quantum algebras and has been introduced independently in combinatorics. The (p,q)-identities thus derived, with doubling of the number of parameters, offer more choices for manipulations; for example, resul…
For certain class of hypergeometric functions ${}_3F_2$ with rational parameters, we give a sufficient condition for the special value at $1$ to be expressed in terms of logarithms of algebraic numbers. We give two proofs, both of which are algebro-geometric and related to higher regulators.
We review some of W.N. Bailey's work on hypergeometric functions that found solid applications in number theory. The text is complemented by Bailey's letters to Freeman Dyson from the 1940s.
We define the generalized hypergeometric polynomial of degree N in terms of the generalized hypergeometric function that depends on p parameters a_1, ..., a_p and q parameters b_1, ..., b_q. The parameters are "generic", possibly complex, numbers. In this paper we obtain a set of N nonlinear algebraic equations satisfied by the N zeros z_n of this polynomial. We moreover manufacture an NxN matrix L in terms of the 1+p+q parameters N, a_j, b_k characterizing this polynomial, and of its N zeros z_n. We show that the matrix L features N eigenvalues that depend only on the q parameters b_k, implyi…
