We show that a formal power series ring $A[[X]]$ over a noetherian ring $A$ is not a projective module unless $A$ is artinian. However, if $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is local, then $A[[X]]$ behaves like a projective module in the sense that $Ext^p_A(A[[X]], M)=0$ for all ${\mathfrak m}$-adically complete $A$-modules. The latter result is shown more generally for any flat $A$-module $B$ instead of $A[[X]]$. We apply the results to the (analytic) Hochschild cohomology over complete noetherian rings.
Let $T$ be a tilting module. In this paper, Gorenstein $π[T]$-projective modules are introduced and some of their basic properties are studied. Moreover, some characterizations of rings over which all modules are Gorenstein $π[T]$-projective are given. For instance, on the $T$-cocoherent rings, it is proved that the Gorenstein $π[T]$-projectivity of all $R$-modules is equivalent to the $π[T]$-projectivity of $σ[T]$-injective as a module.
In this paper, the projectivity of a finitely generated flat module of a commutative ring is studied through its exterior powers and invariant factors and then various new results are obtained. Specially, the related results of Endo, Vasconcelos, Wiegand, Cox-Rush and Puninski-Rothmaler on the projectivity of finitely generated flat modules are generalized.
In this article, the projectivity of finitely generated flat modules of a commutative ring are studied from a topological point of view. Then various interesting results are obtained. For instance, it is shown that if a ring has either a finitely many minimal primes or a finitely many maximal ideals then every finitely generated flat module over it is projective. It is also shown that if a particular subset of the prime spectrum of a ring satisfies some certain ascending or descending chain conditions then every finitely generated flat module over this ring is projective. These results general…
Local rings are ubiquitous in algebraic geometry. Not only are they naturally meaningful in a geometric sense, but also they are extremely useful as many problems can be attacked by first reducing to the local case and taking advantage of their nice properties. Any localization of a ring $R$, for instance, is flat over $R$. Similarly, when studying finitely generated modules over local rings, projectivity, flatness, and freeness are all equivalent. We introduce the packages PruneComplex, Localization and LocalRings for Macaulay2. The first package consists of methods for pruning chain complexe…
The Module Cancellation Problem solicits hypotheses that, when imposed on modules $K$, $L$, and $M$ over a ring $S$, afford the implication $K\oplus L\cong K\oplus M\Longrightarrow L\cong M$. In a well-known paper on basic element theory from 1973, Eisenbud and Evans lament the "great scarcity of strong results" in module cancellation research, expressing the wish that, "under some general hypothesis" on finitely generated modules over a commutative Noetherian ring, cancellation could be demonstrated. Singling out cancellation theorems by Bass and Dress that feature "large" projective modules,…
In this paper, we characterize several properties of commutative notherian local rings in terms of the left perpendicular category of the category of finitely generated modules of finite projective dimension. As an application we prove that a local ring is regular if (and only if) there exists a strong test module for projectivity having finite projective dimension. We also obtain corresponding results with respect to a semidualizing module.
This paper studies the multiplicative ideal structure of commutative rings in which every finitely generated ideal is quasi-projective. Section 2 provides some preliminaries on quasi-projective modules over commutative rings. Section 3 investigates the correlation with well-known Prufer conditions; namely, we prove that this class of rings stands strictly between the two classes of arithmetical rings and Gaussian rings. Thereby, we generalize Osofsky's theorem on the weak global dimension of arithmetical rings and partially resolve Bazzoni-Glaz's related conjecture on Gaussian rings. We also e…
In this article, the ring of polynomials is studied in a systematic way through the theory of monoid rings. As a consequence, this study provides natural and canonical approaches in order to find easy and rigorous proofs and methods for many facts on polynomials and formal power series; some of them as sample are treated in this note. Besides the universal properties of the monoid rings and polynomial rings, a universal property for the formal power series rings is also established.
We compute the Gorenstein weak dimension of a coherent power series rings over a commutative rings and we show that, in general, $\gwd(R) \leq 1$ does not imply that $R$ is an arithmetical ring.
We give a comparison between the Poincare series of two monomial rings: $R=A/I$ and $R_q=A/I_q$ where $I_q$ is a monomial ideal generated by the $q$'th power of monomial generators of $I$. We compute the Poincare series for a class of monomial rings with minimal Taylor resolution. The paper was produced during Pragmatic 2011.
We give an explicit formula for the Hilbert Series of an algebra defined by a linearly presented, standard graded, residual intersection of a grade three Gorenstein ideal.
We prove a power series ring analogue of the Dedekind-Mertens lemma. Along the way, we give limiting counterexamples, we note an application to integrality, and we correct an error in the literature.
Let $S=\Bbbk[x_1,..., x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ and $I$ a monomial ideal of $S$. It is well known that the Poincaré series of $\Bbbk$ over $S/I$ is rational. We describe the coefficients of the denominator of the series and study the multigraded homotopy Lie algebra of $S/I$.
In this paper, we prove several results on the finiteness of local cohomology of polynomial and formal power series rings. In particular, we give a partial affirmative answer for a question of L. Núñez-Betancourt in [J. Algebra 399 (2014), 770--781].
Let $A$ be a ring and $R$ be a polynomial or a power series ring over $A$. When $A$ has dimension zero, we show that the Bass numbers and the associated primes of the local cohomology modules over $R$ are finite. Moreover, if $A$ has dimension one and $π$ is an nonzero divisor, then the same properties hold for prime ideals that contain $π.$ These results do not require that $A$ contains a field. As a consequence, we give a different proof for the finiteness properties of local cohomology over unramified regular local rings. In addition, we extend previous results on the injective dimension of…
Given positive integers e and s we consider Gorenstein Artinian local rings R of embedding dimension e whose maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfies $\mathfrak{m}^s\ne 0=\mathfrak{m}^{s+1}$. We say that R is a compressed Gorenstein local ring when it has maximal length among such rings. It is known that generic Gorenstein Artinian algebras are compressed. If $s\ne 3$, we prove that the Poincare series of all finitely generated modules over a compressed Gorenstein local ring are rational, sharing a common denominator. A formula for the denominator is given. When s is even this formula depends on…
Let $R$ be a local, Gorenstein ring with algebraically closed residue field $k$ of characteristic 0 and let $P_R(z):=\sum_{p=0}^{\infty}\dim_k(\tor_p^R(k,k))z^p$ be its Poincaré series. We compute $P_R$ when $R$ belongs to a particular class defined in the introduction, proving its rationality. As a by--product we prove the rationality of $P_R$ for all local, Gorenstein rings of multiplicity at most 10.
We define a notion of compressed local Artinian ring that does not require the ring to contain a field. Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be a compressed local Artinian ring with odd top socle degree $s$, at least five, and $\operatorname{socle}(R)\cap \mathfrak m^{s-1}=\mathfrak m^s$. We prove that the Poincaré series of all finitely generated modules over $R$ are rational, sharing a common denominator, and that there is a Golod homomorphism from a complete intersection onto $R$.
Let $R$ be the polynomial ring $K[x_{i,j}]$ where $1 \le i \le r$ and $j \in \mathbb{N}$, and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ stable under the natural action of the infinite symmetric group $S_{\infty}$. Nagel--Römer recently defined a Hilbert series $H_I(s,t)$ of $I$ and proved that it is rational. We give a much shorter proof of this theorem using tools from the theory of formal languages and a simple algorithm that computes the series.
Let R be the quotient of a polynomial ring over a field k by an ideal generated by monomials. We derive a formula for the multigraded Poincare' series of R, i.e., the generating function for the ranks of the modules in a minimal multigraded free resolution of k over R. The formula can be expressed in terms of the homology of lower intervals in a certain lattice associated to the minimal set of generators for the ideal.
On a smooth variety, Serre's intersection formula computes intersection multiplicities via an alternating sum of the lengths of Tor groups. When the variety is singular, the corresponding sum can be a divergent series. But there are alternate geometric approaches for assigning (often fractional) intersection multiplicities in some singular settings. Our motivating question comes from Fulton, who asks whether an analytic continuation of the divergent series from Serre's formula can be related to these fractional multiplicities. By applying work of Avramov and Buchweitz, we positively answer Ful…
Let K be a field, m and n positive integers, and X = {x_1,...,x_n}, and Y = {y_1,..., y_m} sets of independent variables over K. Let A be the polynomial ring K[X] localized at (X). We prove that every prime ideal P in A^ = K[[X]] that is maximal with respect to P\cap A = (0) has height n-1. We consider the mixed power series/polynomial rings B := K[[X]][Y]_{(X,Y)} and C := K[Y]_{(Y)}[[X]]. For each prime ideal P of B^ = C that is maximal with respect to either P \cap B = (0) or P \cap C = (0), we prove that P has height n+m-2. We also prove that each prime ideal P of K[[X, Y]] that is maximal …

We prove in particular that the Gorenstein numerical semigroup ring generated by (36,48,50,52,56,60,66,67,107,121,129,135) has a transcendental series of Betti numbers. The methods of proofs are the theory of Golod homomorphism and the theory of infinite positively graded Lie algebras. This paper is more than twice as long as earlier 1212.0720, has two extra authors and has new general results about decomposition of graded Lie algebras (theorems 2,3 and 4) in the new section 4.
We study the ring of arithmetical functions with unitary convolution, giving an isomorphism to a generalized power series ring on infinitely many variables, similar to the isomorphism of Cashwell-Everett between the ring of arithmetical functions with Dirichlet convolution and the power series ring on countably many variables. We topologize it with respect to a natural norm, and shove that all ideals are quasi-finite. Some elementary results on factorization into atoms are obtained. We prove the existence of an abundance of non-associate regular non-units.
We study the question if projective modules over formal Laurent series rings are extended. We relate this question to the Bass-Quillen conjecture for commutative regular local rings and to the Hermite ring conjecture for all commutative local rings. Using our result about projective modules over formal Laurent series rings, we prove a reduction step for the Hermite ring conjecture. We show that the Hermite ring conjecture holds for all commutative local rings if and only if it holds for complete intersection rings which are also unique factorization domains.
In this paper we proved that if $R$ is right $ω$-Euclidean domain, then skew Laurent formal series ring is right $ω$-Euclidean domain. We also showed that if $R$ is a right $ω$-Euclidean domain with multiplicative norm, then skew Laurent formal series ring is a right principal ideal domain. In addition, we proved that if $R$ is a noncommutative $ω$-Euclidean domain with a multiplicative norm, then $R$ and skew Laurent formal series ring is a ring with elementary reduction of matrices.
We give a necessary condition for algebraicity of finite modules over the ring of formal power series. This condition is given in terms of local zero estimates. In fact we show that this condition is also sufficient when the module is a ring with some additional properties. To prove this result we show an effective Weierstrass Division Theorem and an effective solution to the Ideal Membership Problem in rings of algebraic power series. Finally we apply these results to prove a gap theorem for power series which are remainders of the Grauert-Hironaka-Galligo Division Theorem.
We prove a Lojasiewicz type inequality for a system of polynomial equations with coefficients in the ring of formal power series in two variables. This result is an effective version of the Strong Artin Approximation Theorem. From this result we deduce a bound of Artin functions of isolated singularities.
Given an ideal of forms in an algebra (polynomial ring, tensor algebra, exterior algebra, Lie algebra, bigraded polynomial ring), we consider the Hilbert series of the factor ring. We concentrate on the minimal Hilbert series, which is achieved when the forms are generic. In the polynomial ring we also consider the opposite case of maximal series. This is mainly a survey article, but we give a lot of problems and conjectures. The only novel results concern the maximal series in the polynomial ring.
We construct a ring with the properties of the title of the paper. We also construct some other local rings of embedding dimension 4 with exotic properties. Among the methods used are the {\tt Macaulay2}-package {\tt DGAlgebras} by Frank Moore, combined with and inspired by results by Anick, Avramov, Backelin, Katthän, Lemaire, Levin, Löfwall and others.
Let D be a Noetherian domain containing a field, d a nonzero nonunit of D and z an indeterminate over D. We prove that the generic fiber of D[1/d][[z]] over D[[z]] has dimension greater than the dimension of D/dD.
For a big class of commutative rings R every continuous R-automorphism of R[[X_1,...,X_n]] with the identity linear part is in the commutator subgroup of Aut(R[[X_1,...,X_n]]). An explicit bound for the number of the involved commutators and a K-theoretic interpretation of this result are provided.
We consider polynomials with integer coefficients and discuss their factorization properties in Z[[x]], the ring of formal power series over Z. We treat polynomials of arbitrary degree and give sufficient conditions for their reducibility as power series. Moreover, if a polynomial is reducible over Z[[x]], we provide an explicit factorization algorithm. For polynomials whose constant term is a prime power, our study leads to the discussion of p-adic integers.
In this note, we give examples of formal power series satisfying certain conditions that cannot be realized as Hilbert series of finitely generated modules. This answers to the negative a question raised in a recent article by the second and the third author. On the other hand, we show that the answer is positive after multiplication with a scalar.
In this paper, we investigate the structure of skew power series rings of the form $S = R[[x;σ,δ]]$, where $R$ is a complete filtered ring and $(σ,δ)$ is a skew derivation respecting the filtration. Our main focus is on the case in which $σδ= δσ$, and we aim to use techniques in non-commutative valuation theory to address the long-standing open question: if $P$ is an invariant prime ideal of $R$, is $PS$ a prime ideal of $S$? When $R$ has characteristic $p$, our results reduce this to a finite-index problem. We also give preliminary results in the "Iwasawa algebra" case $δ= σ- \mathrm{id}_R$ i…
We study the multiplicity of the jumping numbers of an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $\mathfrak a$ in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. The formula we provide for the multiplicities leads to a very simple and efficient method to detect whether a given rational number is a jumping number. We also give an explicit description of the Poincaré series of multiplier ideals associated to $\mathfrak a$ proving, in particular, that it is a rational function.
Suppose that $k$ is an arbitrary field. Consider the field $k((x_1,...,x_n))$, which is the quotient field of the ring $k[[x_1,...,x_n]]$ of formal power series in the variables $x_1,...,x_n$, with coefficients in $k$. Suppose that $σ$ is a formal power series in $x_1,...,x_n$ with coefficints in the algebraic closure of $k$. We give a very simple necessary and sufficient condition for $σ$ to be algebraic over $k((x_1,...,x_n))$. As an application of our methods, we give a characterization of valuation rings $V$ which dominate an excellent, Noetherian local domain $R$ of dimension two, and suc…
In this expository paper, we give a complete proof of van den Essen's theorem that the de Rham cohomology spaces of a holonomic D-module are finite-dimensional in the case of a formal power series ring over a field of characteristic zero. This proof requires results from at least five of van den Essen's papers as well as his unpublished thesis, and until now has not been available in a self-contained document.
