We consider the big finitistic projective and flat dimensions of a commutative ring and of its formal power series ring. When the ring is Noetherian, both invariants increase by one. Coherence of the power series ring does not force either equality to hold. For every \(n\ge0\) and every \(d\) with \(n+1\le d\le\infty\), the flat pair \((n,d)\) can be realized. The finite projective pairs are realized when \(n\ge1\), and also for \((0,1)\). For every \(n\ge0\), one family realizes \((n,\infty)\) for both invariants at the same time. The seed is a zero-dimensional perfect local ring. Its power series ring has countably presented modules whose flat dimension is \(r\) and whose projective dimension lies between \(r\) and \(r+1\), for every \(r\ge1\). The remaining finite projective case is controlled by a dichotomy for perfect coefficient rings. If the Jacobson radical is nilpotent, the power series value is one; if it is not nilpotent, there is a module of projective dimension exactly three. In particular, the pair \((0,2)\) is impossible. For one fixed countable perfect ring, the power series ring has finitistic flat dimension one. Its finitistic projective dimension is \(m+2\) when \(2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_m\) with \(1\le m<\infty\), and is infinite when \(2^{\aleph_0}>\aleph_ω\).
We introduce the finitistic extension degree of a ring and investigate rings for which it is finite. The Auslander-Reiten Conjecture is proved for rings of finite finitistic extension degree and these rings are also shown to have finite finitistic dimension. We apply these results to better understand a gen- eralized version of the Auslander-Reiten Condition for Gorenstein rings. We also record how the finitistic extension degree behaves with respect to many change of ring procedures that arise frequently in the commutative setting.
It is proven that each commutative arithmetical ring $R$ has a finitistic weak dimension $\leq 2$. More precisely, this dimension is 0 if $R$ is locally IF, 1 if $R$ is locally semicoherent and not IF, and 2 in the other cases.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. The small finitistic dimension $\fPD(R)$ of $R$ is defined to be the supremum of projective dimensions of $R$-modules with finite projective resolutions. In this paper, we characterize a ring $R$ with $\fPD(R)\leq n$ using finitely generated semi-regular ideals, tilting modules, cotilting modules of cofinite type or vaguely associated prime ideals. As an application, we obtain that if $R$ is a Noetherian ring, then $\fPD(R)= \sup\{\grade(\m,R)|\m\in \Max(R)\}$ where $\grade(\m,R)$ is the grade of $\m$ on $R$ . We also show that a ring $R$ satisfies …
For a ring $A$, we consider the question whether every bounded above cochain complex of injective $A$-modules which is acyclic is null-homotopic. We show that if $A$ is left and right noetherian and has a dualizing complex, then this implies that the finitistic dimension of $A$ is finite. In the appendix, Nakamura and Thompson show that the opposite holds over any ring. Our results give several new necessary and sufficient conditions for a ring to have finite finitistic dimension in a very general setting. Applications include a generalization of a recent result of Rickard about relations betw…
We investigate two invariants of Noetherian semiperfect rings, namely the depth and a new invariant we call the "delooping level". These give lower and upper bounds for the finitistic dimension, respectively. As first theorems, we give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the delooping level to be finite in terms of the splitting of the unit map of a related adjunction, and use this to give a sufficient torsionfreeness criterion for finiteness. We further relate these invariants to the Auslander-Bridger grade conditions for modules, which are vanishing conditions on double Ext duals. As ma…
In this paper, we introduce and study the notions of $τ_q$-flat modules and $τ_q$-coheret rings. First, by investigating the Nagata rings of $τ_q$-torsion theory, we show that the small finitistic dimensions of T$(R[x])$ are all equal to $0$ for any ring $R$. Then, we introduce the notion of $τ_q$-VN regular rings (i.e. over which all modules are $τ_q$-flat), and show that a ring $R$ is a $τ_q$-VN regular ring if and only if T$(R[x])$ is a von Neumann regular ring. Finally, we obtain the Chase theorem for $τ_q$-coheret rings: a ring $R$ is $τ_q$-coherent if and only if any direct product of $R…
In this article, the ring of polynomials is studied in a systematic way through the theory of monoid rings. As a consequence, this study provides natural and canonical approaches in order to find easy and rigorous proofs and methods for many facts on polynomials and formal power series; some of them as sample are treated in this note. Besides the universal properties of the monoid rings and polynomial rings, a universal property for the formal power series rings is also established.
In this paper, we prove several results on the finiteness of local cohomology of polynomial and formal power series rings. In particular, we give a partial affirmative answer for a question of L. Núñez-Betancourt in [J. Algebra 399 (2014), 770--781].
Let $A$ be a local Noetherian domain of Krull dimension $d$. Heinzer, Rotthaus and Sally have shown that if the generic formal fiber of $A$ has dimension $d-1$, then $A$ is birationally dominated by a one-dimensional analytically ramified local Noetherian ring having residue field finite over the residue field of $A$. We explore further this correspondence between prime ideals in the generic formal fiber and one-dimensional analytically ramified local rings. Our main focus is on the case where the analytically ramified local rings are stable, and we show that in this case the embedding dimensi…
Let (R,m) be a Noetherian local domain of dimension n that is essentially finitely generated over a field and let R^ denote the m-adic completion of R. Matsumura has shown that n-1 is the maximal height possible for prime ideals of R^ in the generic formal fiber of R. In this article we prove that every prime ideal of R^ that is maximal in the generic formal fiber of R has height n-1. We also present a related result concerning the generic formal fibers of certain extensions of mixed polynomial-power series rings.
We consider a circle of ideas involving differential algebra, local Noetherian rings, and their generic formal fibers. Connecting these ideas gives rise to what we term a "twisted" subring $R$ of a ring $S$. Each such subring $R$ arises as a pullback of a derivation taking values in an $S$-module $K$. The twisting relationship proves to be a kind of inversion of Nagata idealization: whereas idealization extends $S$ to the larger ring $S \star K$, twisting produces a subring of $S$ which behaves much like the ring $S \star K$. The rings produced in this manner exhibit pathological features, suc…
Let $R$ be the polynomial ring $K[x_{i,j}]$ where $1 \le i \le r$ and $j \in \mathbb{N}$, and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ stable under the natural action of the infinite symmetric group $S_{\infty}$. Nagel--Römer recently defined a Hilbert series $H_I(s,t)$ of $I$ and proved that it is rational. We give a much shorter proof of this theorem using tools from the theory of formal languages and a simple algorithm that computes the series.
Let $T$ be a complete equicharacteristic local (Noetherian) UFD of dimension $3$ or greater. Assuming that $|T| = |T/m|$, where $m$ is the maximal ideal of $T$, we construct a local UFD $A$ whose completion is $T$ and whose formal fibers at height one prime ideals have prescribed dimension between zero and the dimension of the generic formal fiber. If, in addition, $T$ is regular and has characteristic zero, we can construct $A$ to be excellent.
Let \fa be an ideal of a local ring (R,\fm) and M a finitely generated R-module. This paper concerns the notion \fgrade(\fa,M), the formal grade of M with respect to \fa (i.e. the least integer i such that {\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M)\neq 0). We show that \fgrade(\fa,M)\geq \depth M-\cd_{\fa}(M), and as a result, we establish a new characterization of Cohen-Macaulay modules. As an application of this characterization, we show that if M is Cohen-Macaulay and L a pure submodule of M with the same support as M, then \fgrade(\fa,L)=\fgrade(\fa,M). Also, we give a generalization of the Hochster-Eag…
Over a commutative noetherian ring $R$ of finite Krull dimension, we show that every complex of flat cotorsion $R$-modules decomposes as a direct sum of a minimal complex and a contractible complex. Moreover, we define the notion of a semi-flat-cotorsion complex as a special type of semi-flat complex, and provide functorial ways to construct a quasi-isomorphism from a semi-flat complex to a semi-flat-cotorsion complex. Consequently, every $R$-complex can be replaced by a minimal semi-flat-cotorsion complex in the derived category over $R$. Furthermore, we describe structure of semi-flat-cotors…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, let $R$ be the ring of formal power series in $n$ variables over $k$ and let $D(R,k)$ be the ring of $k-$linear differential operators in $R$. If $M$ is a finitely generated $D(R,k)-$module then $d(M)\geq n$ where $d(M)$ is the dimension of $M$. This inequality is called the Bernstein inequality. We provide a short proof.
We study the question if projective modules over formal Laurent series rings are extended. We relate this question to the Bass-Quillen conjecture for commutative regular local rings and to the Hermite ring conjecture for all commutative local rings. Using our result about projective modules over formal Laurent series rings, we prove a reduction step for the Hermite ring conjecture. We show that the Hermite ring conjecture holds for all commutative local rings if and only if it holds for complete intersection rings which are also unique factorization domains.
Elkik established a remarkable theorem that can be applied for any noetherian henselian ring. For algebraic equations with a formal solution (restricted by some smoothness assumption), this theorem provides a solution adically close to the formal one in the base ring. In this paper, we show that the theorem would fail for some non-noetherian henselian rings. These rings do not satisfy several conditions weaker than noetherianness, such as weak proregularity (due to Grothendieck et al.) of the defining ideal. We describe the resulting pathologies.
Let T be a complete local (Noetherian) equidimensional ring with maximal ideal m such that the Krull dimension of T is at least two and the depth of T is at least two. Suppose that no integer of T is a zerodivisor and that |T|=|T/m|. Let d and t be integers such that 1 $\leq$ d $\leq$ dimT-1, 0 $\leq$ t $\leq$ dimT - 1, and d - 1 $\leq$ t. Assume that, for every p in AssT, ht(p) $\leq$ d-1 and that if z is a regular element of T and Q is in Ass(T/zT), then ht(Q) $\leq$ d. We construct a local unique factorization domain A such that the completion of A is T and such that the dimension of the fo…
For a big class of commutative rings R every continuous R-automorphism of R[[X_1,...,X_n]] with the identity linear part is in the commutator subgroup of Aut(R[[X_1,...,X_n]]). An explicit bound for the number of the involved commutators and a K-theoretic interpretation of this result are provided.
We consider polynomials with integer coefficients and discuss their factorization properties in Z[[x]], the ring of formal power series over Z. We treat polynomials of arbitrary degree and give sufficient conditions for their reducibility as power series. Moreover, if a polynomial is reducible over Z[[x]], we provide an explicit factorization algorithm. For polynomials whose constant term is a prime power, our study leads to the discussion of p-adic integers.
In this paper we proved that if $R$ is right $ω$-Euclidean domain, then skew Laurent formal series ring is right $ω$-Euclidean domain. We also showed that if $R$ is a right $ω$-Euclidean domain with multiplicative norm, then skew Laurent formal series ring is a right principal ideal domain. In addition, we proved that if $R$ is a noncommutative $ω$-Euclidean domain with a multiplicative norm, then $R$ and skew Laurent formal series ring is a ring with elementary reduction of matrices.
Let $\mathfrak a$ denote an ideal of a local ring $(R, \mathfrak m).$ Let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module. There is a systematic study of the formal cohomology modules $\varprojlim \HH^i(M/\mathfrak a^nM), i \in \mathbb Z.$ We analyze their $R$-module structure, the upper and lower vanishing and non-vanishing in terms of intrinsic data of $M,$ and its functorial behavior. These cohomology modules occur in relation to the formal completion of the punctured spectrum $\Spec R \setminus V(\mathfrak m).$ As a new cohomological data there is a description on the formal grade $\fgrade(\mathfra…
In this expository paper, we give a complete proof of van den Essen's theorem that the de Rham cohomology spaces of a holonomic D-module are finite-dimensional in the case of a formal power series ring over a field of characteristic zero. This proof requires results from at least five of van den Essen's papers as well as his unpublished thesis, and until now has not been available in a self-contained document.
Consider the linear differential equation of $m$-th order with constant coefficients from the valuation ring $K$ of a non-Archimedean field. We get sufficient conditions of uniqueness and existence for the solution of this equation from $K[[x]]$. Also the fundamental solution from $\frac{1}{x}K[[\frac{1}{x}]]$ of the equation is obtained and it is shown that the convolution of the fundamental solution and a non-homogeneity is a unique solution of the equation.

We provide an irreducibility test and factoring algorithm (with some qualifications) for formal power series in the unique factorization domain $R[[X]]$, where $R$ is any principal ideal domain. We also classify all integral domains arising as quotient rings of $R[[X]]$. Our main tool is a generalization of the $p$-adic Weierstrass preparation theorem to the context of complete filtered commutative rings.
In this paper we present the formal, computer-supported verification of a functional implementation of Buchberger's critical-pair/completion algorithm for computing Gröbner bases in reduction rings. We describe how the algorithm can be implemented and verified within one single software system, which in our case is the Theorema system. In contrast to existing formal correctness proofs of Buchberger's algorithm in other systems, e. g. Coq and ACL2, our work is not confined to the classical setting of polynomial rings over fields, but considers the much more general setting of reduction rings; t…
Suppose that $k$ is an arbitrary field. Consider the field $k((x_1,...,x_n))$, which is the quotient field of the ring $k[[x_1,...,x_n]]$ of formal power series in the variables $x_1,...,x_n$, with coefficients in $k$. Suppose that $σ$ is a formal power series in $x_1,...,x_n$ with coefficints in the algebraic closure of $k$. We give a very simple necessary and sufficient condition for $σ$ to be algebraic over $k((x_1,...,x_n))$. As an application of our methods, we give a characterization of valuation rings $V$ which dominate an excellent, Noetherian local domain $R$ of dimension two, and suc…
We prove a Lojasiewicz type inequality for a system of polynomial equations with coefficients in the ring of formal power series in two variables. This result is an effective version of the Strong Artin Approximation Theorem. From this result we deduce a bound of Artin functions of isolated singularities.
Let u be a local homomorphism of noetherian local rings forming part of a commutative square vf=gu. We give some conditions on the square which imply that u is formally smooth. This result encapsulates a variety of (apparently unrelated) results in commutative algebra greatly improving some of them: Greco's theorem on descent of quasi-excellence property by finite surjective morphisms, Kunz's characterization of regular local rings in positive characteristic by means of the Frobenius homomorphism (and in fact the relative version obtained by Andre and Radu), etc. In the second part of the pape…
