This paper studies the multiplicative ideal structure of commutative rings in which every finitely generated ideal is quasi-projective. Section 2 provides some preliminaries on quasi-projective modules over commutative rings. Section 3 investigates the correlation with well-known Prufer conditions; namely, we prove that this class of rings stands strictly between the two classes of arithmetical rings and Gaussian rings. Thereby, we generalize Osofsky's theorem on the weak global dimension of arithmetical rings and partially resolve Bazzoni-Glaz's related conjecture on Gaussian rings. We also establish an analogue of Bazzoni-Glaz results on the transfer of Prufer conditions between a ring and its total ring of quotients. Section 4 examines various contexts of trivial ring extensions in order to build new and original examples of rings where all finitely generated ideals are subject to quasi-projectivity, marking their distinction from related classes of Prufer rings.
We prove that a commutative parasemifield S is additively idempotent provided that it is finitely generated as a semiring. Consequently, every proper commutative semifield T that is finitely generated as a semiring is either additively constant or additively idempotent. As part of the proof, we use the classification of finitely generated lattice-ordered groups to prove that a certain monoid associated to the parasemifield S has a distinguished geometrical property called prismality.
Let R be a commutative ring. A not necessarily commutative R-algebra A is called futile if it has only finitely many R-subalgebras. In this article we relate the notion of futility to familiar properties of rings and modules. We do this by first reducing to the case where A is commutative. Then we refine the description of commutative futile algebras from Dobbs, Picavet and Picavet-L'hermite.
In commutative ring theory, there is a theorem of Cohen which states that if in a commutative ring all prime ideals are finitely generated then every ideal is finitely generated. However, it is known that having only maximal ideals finitely generated doesn't imply all ideals be finitely generated. In his article we ask the question that what happens if we assume all non-maximal ideals are finitely generated, and we answer the question by showing that indeed then all maximal ideals are also finitely generated i.e. the ring becomes Noetherian.
We show that the cosupport of a commutative noetherian ring is precisely the set of primes appearing in a minimal pure-injective resolution of the ring. As an application of this, we prove that every countable commutative noetherian ring has full cosupport. We also settle the comparison of cosupport and support of finitely generated modules over any commutative noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension. Finally, we give an example showing that the cosupport of a finitely generated module need not be a closed subset of $\operatorname{Spec}(R)$, providing a negative answer to a question of Sathe…
Let R be a quotient ring of a commutative coherent regular ring by a finitely generated ideal. Hovey gave a bijection between the set of coherent subcategories of the category of finitely presented R-modules and the set of thick subcategories of the derived category of perfect R-complexes. Using this isomorphism, he proved that every coherent subcategory of finitely presented R-modules is a Serre subcategory. In this paper, it is proved that this holds whenever R is a commutative noetherian ring. This paper also yields a module version of the bijection between the set of localizing subcategori…
A finitely generated commutative monoid is uniquely presented if it has only a minimal presentation. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for finitely generated, combinatorially finite, cancellative, commutative monoids to be uniquely presented. We use the concept of gluing to construct commutative monoids with this property. Finally for some relevant families of numerical semigroups we describe the elements that are uniquely presented.
The main aim of this paper is to investigate rings over which all (finitely generated strongly) Gorenstein projective modules are projective. We consider this propriety under change of rings, and give various examples of rings with and without this propriety.
We characterize those finitely generated commutative rings which are (parametrically) bi-interpretable with arithmetic: a finitely generated commutative ring $A$ is bi-interpretable with $(\mathbb N,{+},{\times})$ if and only if the space of non-maximal prime ideals of $A$ is nonempty and connected in the Zariski topology and the nilradical of $A$ has a nontrivial annihilator in $\mathbb Z$. Notably, by constructing a nontrivial derivation on a nonstandard model of arithmetic we show that the ring of dual numbers over $\mathbb Z$ is not bi-interpretable with $\mathbb N$.
A definition of quasi-flat left module is proposed and it is shown that any left module which is either quasi-projective or flat is quasi-flat. A characterization of local commutative rings for which each ideal is quasi-flat (resp. quasi-projective) is given. It is also proven that each commutative ring R whose finitely generated ideals are quasi-flat is of $λ$-dimension $\le$ 3, and this dimension $\le$ 2 if R is local. This extends a former result about the class of arithmetical rings. Moreover, if R has a unique minimal prime ideal then its finitely generated ideals are quasi-projective if …
Let $R$ be a commutative ring. An $R$-module $M$ is said to be super finitely presented if there is an exact sequence of $R$-modules $\cdots\rightarrow P_n\rightarrow\cdots \rightarrow P_1\rightarrow P_0\rightarrow M\rightarrow 0$ where each $P_i$ is finitely generated projective. In this paper it is shown that if $R$ has the property (B) that every super finitely presented module has finite Gorenstein projective dimension, then every finitely generated Gorenstein projective module is super finitely presented. As an application of the notion of super finitely presented modules, we show that if…
The space of marked commutative rings on n given generators is a compact metrizable space. We compute the Cantor-Bendixson rank of any member of this space. For instance, the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the free commutative ring on n generators is omega^n, where omega is the smallest infinite ordinal. More generally, we work in the space of finitely generated modules over a given commutative ring.
Commutative semirings with divisible additive semigroup are studied. We show that an additively divisible commutative semiring is idempotent, provided that it is finitely generated and torsion. In case that a one-generated additively divisible semiring posseses no unit, it must contain an ideal of idempotent elements. We also present a series of open questions about finitely generated commutative semirings and their equivalent versions.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and let $M$ be an $R$-module which is generated by $μ$ elements but not fewer. We denote by $\operatorname{SL}_n(R)$ the group of the $n \times n$ matrices over $R$ with determinant $1$. We denote by $\operatorname{E}_n(R)$ the subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}_n(R)$ generated by the the matrices which differ from the identity by a single off-diagonal coefficient. Given $n \ge μ$ and $G \in \left\{\operatorname{SL}_n(R),\operatorname{E}_n(R)\right\}$, we study the action of $G$ by matrix right-multiplication on $\operatorname{V}_n(M)$, the set of elemen…
In this paper we undertake a basic study on connective commutative differential graded algebras (CDGA), more precisely, piecewise Noetherian CDGA, which is a DG-counter part of commutative Noetherian algebra. We establish basic results for example, Auslaner-Buchsbaum formula and Bass formula without any unnecessary assumptions. The key notion is the sup-projective (sppj) and inf-injective (ifij) resolutions introduced by the author, which are DG-versions of the projective and injective resolution for ordinary modules. These are different from DG-projective and DG-injective resolutions which is…
The catenary degree of an element $n$ of a cancellative commutative monoid $S$ is a nonnegative integer measuring the distance between the irreducible factorizations of $n$. The catenary degree of the monoid $S$, defined as the supremum over all catenary degrees occurring in $S$, has been heavily studied as an invariant of nonunique factorization. In this paper, we investigate the set $\mathsf C(S)$ of catenary degrees achieved by elements of $S$ as a factorization invariant, focusing on the case where $S$ in finitely generated (where $\mathsf C(S)$ is known to be finite). Answering an open qu…
Gorenstein homological dimensions are refinements of the classical homological dimensions, and finiteness singles out modules with amenable properties reflecting those of modules over Gorenstein rings. As opposed to their classical counterparts, these dimensions do not immediately come with practical and robust criteria for finiteness, not even over commutative noetherian local rings. In this paper we enlarge the class of rings known to admit good criteria for finiteness of Gorenstein dimensions: It now includes, for instance, the rings encountered in commutative algebraic geometry and, in the…
It is a fundamental result in commutative algebra and invariant theory that a finitely generated graded module over a commutative finitely generated graded algebra has rational Hilbert series, and consequently the Hilbert series of the algebra of polynomial invariants of a group of linear transformations is rational, whenever this algebra is finitely generated. This basic principle is applied here to prove rationality of Hilbert series of algebras of invariants that are neither commutative nor finitely generated. Our main focus is on linear groups acting on certain factor algebras of the tenso…
Let $R$ be a ring and $M$ be a right $R$-module. $M$ is called neat-flat if any short exact sequence of the form $0\to K\to N\to M\to 0$ is neat-exact i.e. any homomorphism from a simple right $R$-module $S$ to $M$ can be lifted to $N$. We prove that, a module is neat-flat if and only if it is simple-projective. Neat-flat right $R$-modules are projective if and only if $R$ is a right $\sum$-$CS$ ring. Every finitely generated neat-flat right $R$-module is projective if and only if $R$ is a right $C$-ring and every finitely generated free right $R$-module is extending. Every cyclic neat-flat ri…
Let R be a commutative ring. If P is a maximal ideal of R whose a power is finitely generated then we prove that P is finitely generated if R is either locally coherent or arithmetical or a polynomial ring over a ring of global dimension $\le$ 2. And if P is a prime ideal of R whose a power is finitely generated then we show that P is finitely generated if R is either a reduced coherent ring or a polynomial ring over a reduced arithmetical ring. These results extend a theorem of Roitman, published in 2001, on prime ideals of coherent integral domains.
Following the well-established terminology in commutative algebra, any (not necessarily commutative) finite-dimensional local algebra $A$ with radical $J$ will be said to be short provided $J^3 = 0$. As in the commutative case, we show: if a short local algebra $A$ has an indecomposable non-projective Gorenstein-projective module $M$, then either $A$ is self-injective (so that all modules are Gorenstein-projective) and then $|J^2| \le 1$, or else $|J^2| = |J/J^2| - 1$ and $|JM| = |J^2||M/JM|$. More generally, we focus the attention to semi-Gorenstein-projective and $\infty$-torsionfree modules…
For a commutative ring R we investigate the property that the sets of minimal primes of finitely generated ideals of R is always finite. We prove this property passes to polynomial ring extensions (in an arbitrary number of variables) over R as well as to R-algebras which are finitely presented as R-modules.
In this note, we study commutative Noetherian local rings having finitely generated modules of finite Gorenstein injective dimension. In particular, we consider whether such rings are Cohen-Macaulay.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $S$ a multiplicative subset of $R$. First, we introduce and study the $S$-projective dimensions and $S$-injective dimensions of $R$-modules, and then explore the $S$-global dimension $S$-gl.dim$(R)$ of a commutative ring $R$ which is defined to be the supremum of $S$-projective dimensions of all $R$-modules. Finally, we investigated the $S$-global dimension of factor rings and polynomial rings.
We describe new classes of noetherian local rings $R$ whose finitely generated modules $M$ have the property that $Tor_i^R(M,M)=0$ for $i\gg 0$ implies that $M$ has finite projective dimension, or $Ext^i_R(M,M)=0$ for $i\gg 0$ implies that $M$ has finite projective dimension or finite injective dimension.
In this article, the projectivity of finitely generated flat modules of a commutative ring are studied from a topological point of view. Then various interesting results are obtained. For instance, it is shown that if a ring has either a finitely many minimal primes or a finitely many maximal ideals then every finitely generated flat module over it is projective. It is also shown that if a particular subset of the prime spectrum of a ring satisfies some certain ascending or descending chain conditions then every finitely generated flat module over this ring is projective. These results general…
Let $R_1$ be a commutative ring, let $R_2$ be a finitely generated extension ring of $R_1$, and let $S$ be a ring that is intermediate between $R_1$ and $R_2$. For $R_1 = R[x]$ and $R_2 = R[x,y]$, this paper gives simple combinatorial constructions of intermediate rings $S$ that are not finitely generated over $R[x]$.
In this paper, the projectivity of a finitely generated flat module of a commutative ring is studied through its exterior powers and invariant factors and then various new results are obtained. Specially, the related results of Endo, Vasconcelos, Wiegand, Cox-Rush and Puninski-Rothmaler on the projectivity of finitely generated flat modules are generalized.
We classify all tilting and cotilting classes over commutative noetherian rings in terms of descending sequences of specialization closed subsets of the Zariski spectrum. Consequently, all resolving subcategories of finitely generated modules of bounded projective dimension are classified. We also relate our results to Hochster's conjecture on the existence of finitely generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules.
We develop in this paper a stable theory for projective complexes, by which we mean to consider a chain complex of finitely generated projective modules as an object of the factor category of the homotopy category modulo split complexes. As a result of the stable theory we are able to prove that a complex of finitely generated projective modules over a generically Gorenstein ring is exact if and only if its dual complex is exact. This shows the dependence of total reflexivity conditions for modules over a generically Gorenstein ring.
A complete classification of finitely generated involutive commutative two-valued groups is obtained. Three series of such two-valued groups are constructed: principal, unipotent and special, and it is shown that any finitely generated involutive commutative two-valued group is isomorphic to a two-valued group belonging to one of these series. A number of classification results are obtained for topological involutive commutative two-valued groups in the Hausdorff and locally compact cases. The classification of algebraic involutive two-valued groups in the one-dimensional case is also discusse…
In this note, we extend the quasi-projective dimension of finite (that is, finitely generated) modules to homologically finite complexes, and we investigate some of homological properties of this dimension.
We study systems of polynomial equations in infinite finitely generated commutative associative rings with an identity element. For each such ring $R$ we obtain an interpretation by systems of equations of a ring of integers $O$ of a finite field extension of either $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_p(t)$, for some prime $p$ and variable $t$. This implies that the Diophantine problem (decidability of systems of polynomial equations) in $O$ is reducible to the same problem in $R$. If, in particular, $R$ has positive characteristic or, more generally, if $R$ has infinite rank, then we further obtain a…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring. A quasi-Gorenstein $R$-module is an $R$-module such that the grade of the module and the projective dimension of the module are equal and the canonical module of the module is isomorphic to the module itself. After discussing properties of finitely generated quasi-Gorenstein modules, it is shown that this definition allows for a characterization of diagonal matrices of maximal rank over a Noetherian factorial domain $R$ extending a theorem of Frobenius and Stickelberger to modules of projective dimension 1 over a commutative Noetherian factorial domain.
Let $R$ be a ring. An $R$-module $M$ is said to be a weak $w$-projective module if ${\rm Ext}_R^1(M,N)=0$ for all $N \in \mathcal{P}_{w}^{\dagger_\infty}$ (see, \cite{FLQ}). In this paper, we introduce and study some properties of weak $w$-projective modules. And we use these modules to characterize some classical rings, for example, we will prove that a ring $R$ is a $DW$-ring if and only if every weak $w$-projective is projective, $R$ is a Von Neumann regular ring if and only if every FP-projective is weak $w$-projective if and only if every finitely presented $R$-module is weak $w$-projecti…
We study the lattice of divisor-closed submonoids of finitely generated cancellative commutative monoids. In case the monoid is an affine semigroup, we give a geometrical characterization of such submonoids in terms of its cone. Finally, we use our results to give an algorithm for computing $Δ^*(H)$ the set of minimal distance of $H$.
We give a necessary condition of degeneration via matrix representations, and consider degenerations of indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules over hypersurface singularities of type ($A_\infty$). We also provide a method to construct degenerations of finitely generated modules over commutative rings.
In this paper we extend two results of Happel to commutative rings. Let $(A, \mathfrak{m})$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring. Let $D^b_f(mod \ A)$ be the bounded derived category of complexes of finitely generated modules over $A$ with finite length cohomology. We show $D^b_f( mod \ A)$ has Auslander-Reiten(AR)-triangles if and only if $A$ is regular. Let $K^b_f(proj \ A)$ be the homotopy category of finite complexes of finitely generated free $A$-modules with finite length cohomology. We show that if $A$ is complete and if $A$ is Gorenstein then $K^b_f( proj \ A)$ has AR triangles. Conv…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. Under various hypotheses, it is proved that the center of $\mbox{End}_R(M)$ coincides with the endomorphism ring of the trace ideal of $M$. These results are exploited to establish results for balanced and rigid modules, and to settle certain cases of a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand.
In this paper, we study the resolving of $\mathcal{SGP}(-)$ and $\mathcal{SGF}(-)$, the classes of all strongly Gorenstein projective and flat modules respectively, over a direct product of commutative rings.
A lattice-ordered group (an $\ell$-group) $G(\oplus, \vee, \wedge)$ can be naturally viewed as a semiring $G(\vee,\oplus)$. We give a full classification of (abelian) $\ell$-groups which are finitely generated as semirings, by first showing that each such $\ell$-group has an order-unit so that we can use the results of Busaniche, Cabrer and Mundici [8]. Then we carefully analyze their construction in our setting to obtain the classification in terms of certain $\ell$-groups associated to rooted trees (Theorem 4.1). This classification result has a number of important applications: for example …
The purpose of this paper is to study the commutative pseudomeadows, the structure which is defined in the same way as commutative meadows, except that the existence of a multiplicative identity is not required. We extend the characterization of finite commutative meadows, given by I.~Bethke, P.~Rodenburg, and A.~Sevenster in their 2015 paper, to the case of commutative pseudomeadows with finitely many idempotents. We also extend the well-known characterization of general commutative meadows as the subdirect products of fields to the case of commutative pseudomeadows. Finally we investigate lo…
