Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and let $M$ be an $R$-module which is generated by $μ$ elements but not fewer. We denote by $\operatorname{SL}_n(R)$ the group of the $n \times n$ matrices over $R$ with determinant $1$. We denote by $\operatorname{E}_n(R)$ the subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}_n(R)$ generated by the the matrices which differ from the identity by a single off-diagonal coefficient. Given $n \ge μ$ and $G \in \left\{\operatorname{SL}_n(R),\operatorname{E}_n(R)\right\}$, we study the action of $G$ by matrix right-multiplication on $\operatorname{V}_n(M)$, the set of elements of $M^n$ whose components generate $M$. Assuming that $M$ is finitely presented and that $R$ is an elementary divisor ring or an almost local-global coherent Prüfer ring, we obtain a description of $\operatorname{V}_n(M)/G$ which extends the author's earlier result on finitely generated modules over quasi-Euclidean rings.
In commutative ring theory, there is a theorem of Cohen which states that if in a commutative ring all prime ideals are finitely generated then every ideal is finitely generated. However, it is known that having only maximal ideals finitely generated doesn't imply all ideals be finitely generated. In his article we ask the question that what happens if we assume all non-maximal ideals are finitely generated, and we answer the question by showing that indeed then all maximal ideals are also finitely generated i.e. the ring becomes Noetherian.
We show that the cosupport of a commutative noetherian ring is precisely the set of primes appearing in a minimal pure-injective resolution of the ring. As an application of this, we prove that every countable commutative noetherian ring has full cosupport. We also settle the comparison of cosupport and support of finitely generated modules over any commutative noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension. Finally, we give an example showing that the cosupport of a finitely generated module need not be a closed subset of $\operatorname{Spec}(R)$, providing a negative answer to a question of Sathe…
The space of marked commutative rings on n given generators is a compact metrizable space. We compute the Cantor-Bendixson rank of any member of this space. For instance, the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the free commutative ring on n generators is omega^n, where omega is the smallest infinite ordinal. More generally, we work in the space of finitely generated modules over a given commutative ring.
Commutative semirings with divisible additive semigroup are studied. We show that an additively divisible commutative semiring is idempotent, provided that it is finitely generated and torsion. In case that a one-generated additively divisible semiring posseses no unit, it must contain an ideal of idempotent elements. We also present a series of open questions about finitely generated commutative semirings and their equivalent versions.
A finitely generated commutative monoid is uniquely presented if it has only a minimal presentation. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for finitely generated, combinatorially finite, cancellative, commutative monoids to be uniquely presented. We use the concept of gluing to construct commutative monoids with this property. Finally for some relevant families of numerical semigroups we describe the elements that are uniquely presented.
We prove that a commutative parasemifield S is additively idempotent provided that it is finitely generated as a semiring. Consequently, every proper commutative semifield T that is finitely generated as a semiring is either additively constant or additively idempotent. As part of the proof, we use the classification of finitely generated lattice-ordered groups to prove that a certain monoid associated to the parasemifield S has a distinguished geometrical property called prismality.
Let $R_1$ be a commutative ring, let $R_2$ be a finitely generated extension ring of $R_1$, and let $S$ be a ring that is intermediate between $R_1$ and $R_2$. For $R_1 = R[x]$ and $R_2 = R[x,y]$, this paper gives simple combinatorial constructions of intermediate rings $S$ that are not finitely generated over $R[x]$.
We establish basic results on subrings of finite commutative rings and closely related rings. Among other applications we calculate the number of maximal subrings of a finite commutative local ring.
For a commutative ring R we investigate the property that the sets of minimal primes of finitely generated ideals of R is always finite. We prove this property passes to polynomial ring extensions (in an arbitrary number of variables) over R as well as to R-algebras which are finitely presented as R-modules.
We characterize those finitely generated commutative rings which are (parametrically) bi-interpretable with arithmetic: a finitely generated commutative ring $A$ is bi-interpretable with $(\mathbb N,{+},{\times})$ if and only if the space of non-maximal prime ideals of $A$ is nonempty and connected in the Zariski topology and the nilradical of $A$ has a nontrivial annihilator in $\mathbb Z$. Notably, by constructing a nontrivial derivation on a nonstandard model of arithmetic we show that the ring of dual numbers over $\mathbb Z$ is not bi-interpretable with $\mathbb N$.
The catenary degree of an element $n$ of a cancellative commutative monoid $S$ is a nonnegative integer measuring the distance between the irreducible factorizations of $n$. The catenary degree of the monoid $S$, defined as the supremum over all catenary degrees occurring in $S$, has been heavily studied as an invariant of nonunique factorization. In this paper, we investigate the set $\mathsf C(S)$ of catenary degrees achieved by elements of $S$ as a factorization invariant, focusing on the case where $S$ in finitely generated (where $\mathsf C(S)$ is known to be finite). Answering an open qu…
In this paper, we introduce and study the $S$-weak global dimension $S$-w.gl.dim$(R)$ of a commutative ring $R$ for some multiplicative subset $S$ of $R$. Moreover, commutative rings with $S$-weak global dimension at most $1$ are studied. Finally, we investigated the $S$-weak global dimension of factor rings and polynomial rings.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $T(R)$ its total quotient ring. We extend the notion of well-centered overring of an integral domain to an arbitrary commutative ring and we investigate the transfer of this property to different extensions of commutative rings in both integral and non-integral cases. Namely in pullbacks and trivial extensions. Our aim is to provide new classes of commutative rings satisfying this property and to shed light on some open questions raised by Heinzer and Roitman in \cite{HR}.
A famous result due to I. M. Isaacs states that if a commutative ring $R$ has the property that every prime ideal is principal, then every ideal of $R$ is principal. This motivates ring theorists to study commutative rings for which every ideal is a direct sum of cyclically presented modules. In this paper, we study commutative rings whose ideals are direct sum of cyclically presented modules.
In this study, we introduce the concept of "uniformly 2-absorbing primary ideals" of commutative rings, which imposes a certain boundedness condition on the usual notion of 2-absorbing primary ideals of commutative rings. Then we investigate some properties of uniformly 2-absorbing primary ideals of commutative rings with examples. Also, we investigate a specific kind of uniformly 2-absorbing primary ideals by the name of "special 2-absorbing primary ideals".
The main aim of this paper is to investigate rings over which all (finitely generated strongly) Gorenstein projective modules are projective. We consider this propriety under change of rings, and give various examples of rings with and without this propriety.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. Under various hypotheses, it is proved that the center of $\mbox{End}_R(M)$ coincides with the endomorphism ring of the trace ideal of $M$. These results are exploited to establish results for balanced and rigid modules, and to settle certain cases of a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand.
Let R be a commutative ring. A not necessarily commutative R-algebra A is called futile if it has only finitely many R-subalgebras. In this article we relate the notion of futility to familiar properties of rings and modules. We do this by first reducing to the case where A is commutative. Then we refine the description of commutative futile algebras from Dobbs, Picavet and Picavet-L'hermite.
We use the concept of 2-absorbing ideal introduced by Badawi to study those commutative rings in which every proper ideal is a product of 2-absorbing ideals (we call them TAF-rings). Any TAF-ring has dimension at most one and the local TAF-domains are the atomic pseudo-valuation domains.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$. In this paper, we introduce the cozero-divisor graph $\acuteΓ_I(R)$ of $R$ and obtain some related results.
In this work, the set of quasi-primary ideals of a commutative ring with identity is equipped with a topology and is called quasi-primary spectrum. Some topological properties of this space are examined. Further, a sheaf of rings on the quasi-primary spectrum is constructed and it is shown that this sheaf is the direct image sheaf with respect to the inclusion map from the prime spectrum of a ring to the quasi-primary spectrum of the same ring.
The strong global dimension of a ring is the supremum of the length of perfect complexes that are indecomposable in the derived category. In this note we characterize the noetherian commutative rings that have finite strong global dimension. We also give a similar characterization for arbitrary noetherian schemes.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $S$ a multiplicative subset of $R$. First, we introduce and study the $S$-projective dimensions and $S$-injective dimensions of $R$-modules, and then explore the $S$-global dimension $S$-gl.dim$(R)$ of a commutative ring $R$ which is defined to be the supremum of $S$-projective dimensions of all $R$-modules. Finally, we investigated the $S$-global dimension of factor rings and polynomial rings.
This paper deals with the graded commutative rings in which every homogeneous prime ideal is contained in a unique homogeneous maximal ideal called Gelfand graded ring. The purpose is to establish some topological and algebraic characterizations of these rings, one of which is the algebraic analogue of the Urysohn's lemma. Finally we look at a special class of those graded rings called pm$^+$ graded rings which can be viewed as graded ring with a Gelfand strong property.
We count the number of submodules of an arbitrary module over a countable noetherian commutative ring. We give, along the way, a structural description of meager modules, which are defined as those that do not have the square of a simple module as subquotient. We deduce in particular a characterization of uniserial modules over commutative noetherian rings.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the symbolic Rees rings of ideals defining certain finite sets of points in the projective plane over an algebraically closed field are finitely generated using a ring theoretical criterion which is known as Huneke's criterion.
It is proven that each commutative arithmetical ring $R$ has a finitistic weak dimension $\leq 2$. More precisely, this dimension is 0 if $R$ is locally IF, 1 if $R$ is locally semicoherent and not IF, and 2 in the other cases.
Much work has been done on generalized factorization techniques in integral domains, namely $τ$-factorization. There has also been substantial progress made in investigating factorization in commutative rings with zero-divisors. This paper seeks to synthesize work done in these two areas and extend the notion of $τ$-factorization to commutative rings that need not be domains. In addition, we look into particular types of $τ$ relations, which are interesting when there are zero-divisors present. We then proceed to classify commutative rings that satisfy the finite factorization properties given…
We consider the class of all commutative reduced rings for which there exists a finite subset T of A such that all projections on quotients by prime ideals of A are surjective when restricted to T. A complete structure theorem is given for this class of rings, and it is studied its relation with other finiteness conditions on the quotients of a ring over its prime ideals.
Let $R$ be a commutative chain ring. We use a variation of Gröbner bases to study the lattice of ideals of $R[x]$. Let $I$ be a proper ideal of $R[x]$. We are interested in the following two questions: When is $R[x]/I$ Frobenius? When is $R[x]/I$ Frobenius and local? We develop algorithms for answering both questions. When the nilpotency of $\text{rad}\,R$ is small, the algorithms provide explicit answers to the questions.
Let $G$ be a group with identity $e$. Let $R$ be a $G$-graded commutative ring and $M$ a graded $R$-module. In this paper, we introduce the concept of graded classical and graded strongly classical 2-absorbing second submodules of graded modules over a graded commutative rings. A number of results concerning these classes of graded submodules and their homogeneous components are given.
We study the transfer of (co)silting objects in derived categories of module categories via the extension functors induced by a morphism of commutative rings. It is proved that the extension functors preserve (co)silting objects of (co)finite type. In many cases the bounded silting property descends along faithfully flat ring extensions. In particular, the notion of bounded silting complex is Zariski local.
All rings are commutative with $1\neq0$. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of weakly $n$-absorbing ideals generalizing weakly 2-absorbing ideals. We prove that over a $u$-ring $R$ the Anderson-Badawi's conjectures about $n$-absorbing ideals and the Badawi-Yousefian's question about weakly 2-absorbing ideals hold.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. Recently, Dibaei and Sadeghi have studied the reduced grade of a horizontally linked R-module M of finite GC-dimension, where C is a semidualizing R-module. In this paper, we highly refine their results. In particular, our main result removes the assumptions that M is holizontally linked and M has finite GC -dimension.
In this article we extend the notion of expansivity from topological dynamics to automorphisms of commutative rings with identity. We show that a ring admits a 0-expansive automorphism if and only if it is a finite product of local rings. Generalizing a well known result of compact metric spaces, we prove that if a ring admits a positively expansive automorphism then it admits finitely many maximal ideals. We prove its converse for principal ideal domains. We also consider the topological expansivity induced, in the spectrum of the ring with the Zariski topology, by an automorphism and some co…
Assume that $R$ is a commutative ring with nonzero identity. In this paper, we introduce and investigate zero-annihilator graph of $R$ denoted by $\mathtt{ZA}(R)$. It is the graph whose vertex set is the set of all nonzero nonunit elements of $R$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent whenever ${\rm Ann}_R(x)\cap {\rm Ann}_R(y)=\{0\}$.
Examples are given to show that the support of a complex of modules over a commutative noetherian ring may not be read off the minimal semi-injective resolution of the complex. The same examples also show that a localization of a semi-injective complex need not be semi-injective.
The ring of integer-valued polynomials on an arbitrary integral domain is well-studied. In this paper we initiate and provide motivation for the study of integer-valued polynomials on commutative rings and modules. Several examples are computed, including the integer-valued polynomials over the ring $R[T_1,\ldots, T_n]/(T_1(T_1-r_1), \ldots, T_n(T_n-r_n))$ for any commutative ring $R$ and any elements $r_1, \ldots, r_n$ of $R$, as well as the integer-valued polynomials over the Nagata idealization $R(+)M$ of $M$ over $R$, where $M$ is an $R$-module such that every non-zerodivisor on $M$ is a n…
This paper studies the multiplicative ideal structure of commutative rings in which every finitely generated ideal is quasi-projective. Section 2 provides some preliminaries on quasi-projective modules over commutative rings. Section 3 investigates the correlation with well-known Prufer conditions; namely, we prove that this class of rings stands strictly between the two classes of arithmetical rings and Gaussian rings. Thereby, we generalize Osofsky's theorem on the weak global dimension of arithmetical rings and partially resolve Bazzoni-Glaz's related conjecture on Gaussian rings. We also e…
We determine the metric dimension of the annihilating-ideal graph of a local finite commutative principal ring and a finite commutative principal ring with two maximal ideals. We also find the bounds for the metric dimension of the annihilating-ideal graph of an arbitrary finite commutative principal ring.
Let $A$ be a commutative augmented ring and $I$ be its augmentation ideal. This paper shows that the sequence $\{I^n/I^{n+1}\}$ becomes stationary up to isomorphism. The result yields stability in the associated graded ring of $A$ along $I$.
Let R be a quotient ring of a commutative coherent regular ring by a finitely generated ideal. Hovey gave a bijection between the set of coherent subcategories of the category of finitely presented R-modules and the set of thick subcategories of the derived category of perfect R-complexes. Using this isomorphism, he proved that every coherent subcategory of finitely presented R-modules is a Serre subcategory. In this paper, it is proved that this holds whenever R is a commutative noetherian ring. This paper also yields a module version of the bijection between the set of localizing subcategori…
In this paper we prove that if $R$ is a commutative, reduced, local ring, then $R$ is Hopfian if and only if the ring $R[x]$ is Hopfian. This answers a question of Varadarajan, in the case when $R$ is a reduced local ring. We provide examples of non-Noetherian Hopfian commutative domains by proving that the finite dimensional domains are Hopfian. Also, we derive some general results related to Hopfian rings.
Given a significative class $F$ of commutative rings, we study the precise conditions under which a commutative ring $R$ has an $F$-envelope. A full answer is obtained when $F$ is the class of fields, semisimple commutative rings or integral domains. When $F$ is the class of Noetherian rings, we give a full answer when the Krull dimension of $R$ is zero and when the envelope is required to be epimorphic. The general problem is reduced to identifying the class of non-Noetherian rings having a monomorphic Noetherian envelope, which we conjecture is the empty class.
The paper has been withdrawn, since there is a mistake in Proposition 5.2. The result on the telescope conjecture for semihereditary rings is correct, but the characterization of the smashing subcategories of the derived category of commutative rings is not complete.
