We compute $CH^*BG_2$ and $CH^*BSpin_7$, using in particular the stratification method introduced by Vezzosi. We also give some information on the Chow rings of the finite groups $G_2(q)$.
This new version includes an appendix, which will be published on its own as an addendum. It explains how one can use our results to produce a counter-example to the conjecture, due to Totaro, which predicted that the Chow ring of a finite group was generated by transfers of Chern classes.
We apply the previous calculations of Chow-Witt rings of Grassmannians to develop an oriented analogue of the classical Schubert calculus. As a result, we get complete diagrammatic descriptions of the ring structure in Chow-Witt rings and twisted Witt groups. In the resulting arithmetic refinements of Schubert calculus, the multiplicity of a solution subspace is a quadratic form encoding additional orientation information. We also discuss a couple of applications, such as a Chow-Witt version of the signed count of balanced subspaces of Fehér and Matszangosz.
We compute the cobordism ring $MU^*(BG)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$ when $G$ is a Chevalley group. In the particular case of the general linear group, we prove that it agrees with the Chow ring (as defined by Totaro).
We use the Steenrod algebra to study $CH^*BG$, the mod $p$ Chow ring of the classifying space of $G$. We describe a localization property which relates a given $G$ to its elementary abelian subgroups, and we study a number of particular cases, namely symmetric groups and Chevalley groups. It turns out that the Chow rings of these groups are completely determined by the abelian subgroups and their fusion.
We investigate the integral cohomology ring and the Chow ring of the classifying space of the complex projective linear group PGL_p, when p is an odd prime. In particular, we determine its additive structure completely, and we reduce the problem of determing its multiplicative structure to a problem in invariant theory.
We determine a subring of the Chow ring and the cohomology of $BPGL_n$, the classifying space of the projective linear group of degree $n$ over complex numbers, and explain a way in which this computation might play a role in the period-index problem. In addition, we show that the Chow ring of $BPGL_n$ is not generated by the Chern classes of linear representations of $PGL_n$.
We compute generators for the Chow ring of the classifying space of PGL_3 (over the complex numbers) as defined by Totaro. We also find enough relations after inverting 3. We show that this ring is not generated by Chern classes (this is the first example of this kind among classical groups) and prove that Totaro's refined cycle class map to a quotient of complex cobordism of BPGL_3 is surjective
We determine the Chow rings of the complex algebraic groups of the exceptional type E_6, E_7, and E_8, giving the explicit generators represented by the pull-back images of Schubert varieties of the corresponding flag varieties. This is a continuation of the work of R. Marlin on the computation of the Chow rings of SO_n, Spin_n, G_2, and F_4. Our method is based on Schubert calculus of the corresponding flag varieties, which has its own interest.
Based on the Basis theorem of Bruhat--Chevalley [C] and the formula for multiplying Schubert classes obtained in [D\QTR{group}{u}] and programed in [DZ$_{\QTR{group}{1}}$], we introduce a new method computing the Chow rings of flag varieties (resp. the integral cohomology of homogeneous spaces). The method and results of this paper have been extended in [DZ$_{3}$, DZ$_{4}$] to obtain the integral cohomology rings of all complete flag manifolds, and to construct the integral cohomologies of Lie groups in terms of Schubert classes.
We describe the equivariant Chow ring of the wonderful compactification $X$ of a symmetric space of minimal rank, via restriction to the associated toric variety $Y$. Also, we show that the restrictions to $Y$ of the tangent bundle $T_X$ and its logarithmic analogue $S_X$ decompose into a direct sum of line bundles. This yields closed formulae for the equivariant Chern classes of $T_X$ and $S_X$, and, in turn, for the Chern classes of reductive groups considered by Kiritchenko.
In the integral cohomology ring of the classifying space of the projective linear group $PGL_n$ (over $\mathbb{C}$), we find a collection of $p$-torsions $y_{p,k}$ of degree $2(p^{k+1}+1)$ for any odd prime divisor $p$ of $n$, and $k\geq 0$. If in addition, $p^2\nmid n$, there are $p$-torsion classes $ρ_{p,k}$ of degree $p^{k+1}+1$ in the Chow ring of the classifying stack of $PGL_n$, such that the cycle class map takes $ρ_{p,k}$ to $y_{p,k}$. We present an application of the above classes regarding Chern subrings.
In this paper we study the integral Chow ring of toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. We prove that the integral Chow ring of a semi-projective toric Deligne-Mumford stack is isomorphic to the Stanley-Reisner ring of the associated stacky fan. The integral orbifold Chow ring is also computed. Our results are illustrated with several examples.
For $X$ a smooth scheme acted on by a linear algebraic group $G$ and $p$ a prime, the equivariant Chow ring $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$ is an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra. We compute Lannes's $T$-functor applied to $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$. As an application, we compute the localization of $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$ away from $n$-nilpotent modules over the Steenrod algebra, affirming a conjecture of Totaro as a special case. In this paper we give a complete description of the integral Chow ring of the stack $\mathscr{H}_{g,1}$ of 1-pointed hyperelliptic curves, lifting relations and generators from the Chow ring of $\mathscr{H}_g$. We also give a geometric interpretation for the generators.
In this paper we prove that the rational Chow rings of $\mathcal{M}_{5,8}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{5,9}$ are tautological, and that these moduli spaces have the Chow Künneth generation Property.
We determine the Chow ring of the stack of truncated displays and more generally the Chow ring of the stack of G-zips. We also investigate the pull-back morphism of the truncated display functor. From this we can determine the Chow ring of the stack of truncated Barsotti-Tate groups over a field of characteristic p up to p-torsion.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface, and H^d(X) the Hilbert scheme parametrising the length d zero-dimensional subschemes of X. We compute the rational Chow ring A^*(H^d(X))\_Q. More precisely, if T is the two-dimensional torus contained in X, we compute the rational equivariant Chow ring A\_T^*(H^d(X))\_Q and the usual Chow ring is an explicit quotient of the equivariant Chow ring. The case of some quasi-projective toric surfaces such as the affine plane are described by our method too.
We prove a formula for the orbifold Chow ring of semi-projective toric DM stacks, generalizing the orbifold Chow ring formula of projective toric DM stacks by Borisov-Chen-Smith. We also consider a special kind of semi-projective toric DM stacks, the Lawrence toric DM stacks. We prove that the orbifold Chow ring of a Lawrence toric DM stack is isomorphic to the orbifold Chow ring of its associated hypertoric DM stack studied in \cite{JT}.
We show how to translate the task of computing the multiplicative structure of a Chow ring of a projective homogeneous variety into an easily understandable combinatorial task of calculating in the corresponding polynomial ring. The algorithms are also presented as a Maple package. Then we proceed to compute the multiplicative structure of the Chow rings for projective homogeneous varieties E6/P1, E7/P7, and E8/P8.

In this work, we introduce the moduli stack $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}^r$ of $n$-pointed, $A_r$-stable curves of genus $g$ and use it to compute the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_3$. Generalizing toric varieties, we introduce toric Deligne-Mumford stacks which correspond to combinatorial data. The main result in this paper is an explicit calculation of the orbifold Chow ring of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. As an application, we prove that the orbifold Chow ring of the toric Deligne-Mumford stack associated to a simplicial toric variety is a flat deformation of (but is not necessarily isomorphic to) the Chow ring of a crepant resolution.
For any vector bundle $V$ on a toric Deligne-Mumford stack $\ix$ the formalism of \cite{EJK:16} defines two intertial products $\star_{V^{+}}$ and $\star_{V^{-}}$ on the Chow group of the inertia stack. We give an explicit presentation for the integral $\star_{V^+}$ and $\star_{V^-}$ Chow rings, extending earlier work of Boris-Chen-Smith \cite{BCS:05} and Jiang-Tsen \cite{JiTs:10} in the orbifold Chow ring case, which corresponds to $V = 0$. We give a short proof of a presentation of the Chow ring of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification of n points on an algebraic variety. The result can be found already in Fulton and MacPherson's original paper. However, there is an error in one of the lemmas used in their proof. In the process we also determine the Chow rings of weighted Fulton--MacPherson compactifications.
We describe the Chow ring with rational coefficients of the moduli space of stable maps with marked points Mbar_{0,m}(n,d) as the subring of invariants of a ring B, relative to the action of the group of symmetries of d elements. B is computed by following a sequence of intermediate spaces for Mbar_{0,m}(n,d) and relating them to substrata of Mbar_{0,1}(n,d+m-1). An additive basis for the Chow ring is presented.
Suppose that X is a nonsingular variety and D is a nonsingular proper subvariety. Configuration spaces of distinct and non-distinct n points in X away from D were constructed by the author and B. Kim in arXiv:0806.3819, by using the method of wonderful compactification. In this paper, we give an explicit presentation of Chow motives and Chow rings of these configuration spaces.
We compute the Chow-Witt rings of split quadrics over a field of characteristic not two. We even determine the full bigraded I-cohomology and Milnor-Witt cohomology rings, including twists by line bundles. The results on I-cohomology corroborate the general philosophy that I-cohomology is an algebro-geometric version of singular cohomology of real varieties: our explicit calculations confirm that the I-cohomology ring of a split quadric over the reals is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring of the space of its real points.
We show that the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions arises naturally as the integral Chow ring of the algebraic stack of expanded pairs originally described by J. Li, using a more combinatorial description in terms of configurations of line bundles. In particular, we exhibit a gluing map which gives rise to the comultiplication. We then apply the result to calculate the Chow rings of certain stacks of semistable curves.
In this paper we show that the family of stable vector bundles gives a set of generators for the Chow ring, the K-theory and the derived category of any smooth projective variety.
We compute the Chow-Witt rings of the classifying spaces for the symplectic and special linear groups. In the structural description we give, contributions from real and complex realization are clearly visible. In particular, the computation of cohomology with $\mathbf{I}^j$-coefficients is done closely along the lines of Brown's computation of integral cohomology for special orthogonal groups. The computations for the symplectic groups show that Chow-Witt groups are a symplectically oriented ring cohomology theory. Conjecturally, Fano varieties of K3 type admit a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. We prove this for many of the families of Fano varieties of K3 type constructed by Fatighenti-Mongardi. This has interesting consequences for the Chow ring of these varieties.
Let $X$ be a hyperkähler variety admitting a Lagrangian fibration. Beauville's "splitting property" conjecture predicts that fibres of the Lagrangian fibration should have a particular behaviour in the Chow ring of $X$. We study this conjectural behaviour for two very classical examples of Lagrangian fibrations.
We compare the cohomology ring of the flag variety $FL_n$ and the Chow cohomology ring of the Gelfand-Zetlin toric variety $X_{GZ}$. We show that $H^*(FL_n, \mathbb{Q})$ is the Gorenstein quotient of the subalgebra $L$ of $A^*(X_{GZ}, \mathbb{Q})$ generated by degree $1$ elements. We compute these algebras for $n=3$ to see that, in general, the subalgebra $L$ does not have Poincare duality.
A conjecture of Beauville and Voisin states that for an irreducible symplectic variety X, any polynomial relation between classes of divisors and the Chern classes of X which holds in cohomology already holds in the Chow groups. We verify the conjecture for a very general double EPW sextic.
We begin a study of the intersection theory of the moduli spaces of degree two stable maps from two-pointed rational curves to arbitrary-dimensional projective space. First we compute the Betti numbers of these spaces using Serre polynomial and equivariant Serre polynomial methods developed by E. Getzler and R. Pandharipande. Then, via the excision sequence, we compute an additive basis for their Chow rings in terms of Chow rings of nonlinear Grassmannians, which have been described by Pandharipande. The ring structure of one of these Chow rings is addressed in a sequel to this paper.
