In this paper we show that the family of stable vector bundles gives a set of generators for the Chow ring, the K-theory and the derived category of any smooth projective variety.
We construct a relative Chow-Kunneth decomposition for a conic bundle over a surface such that the middle projector gives the Prym variety of the associated double covering of the discriminant of the conic bundle. This gives a refinement (up to an isogeny) of Beauville's theorem on the relation between the intermediate Jacobian of the conic bundle and the Prym variety of the double covering.
We study the Chow group of 1-cycles of the moduli space of semistable parabolic vector bundles of fixed rank, determinant and a generic weight over a nonsingular projective curve over $\mathbb{C}$ of genus at least 3. We show that, the Chow group of 1-cycles remains isomorphic as we vary the generic weight. As a consequence, we can give an explicit description of the Chow group in the case of rank 2 and determinant $\mathcal{O}(x)$, where $x\in X$ is a fixed point.
Consider the Fano surface of a conic bundle embedded in $\mathbb P^5$. Let $i$ denote the natural involution acting on this surface. In this note we provide an obstruction to the identity action of the involution on the group of algebraically trivial zero cycles modulo rational equivalence on the surface.
Given a projective algebraic variety $X$, let $Π_p(X)$ denote the monoid of effective algebraic equivalence classes of effective algebraic cycles on $X$. The $p$-th Euler-Chow series of $X$ is an element in the formal monoid-ring $Z[[Π_p(X)]]$ defined in terms of Euler characteristics of the Chow varieties $\cvpd{p}α{X}$ of $X$, with $α\inΠ_p(X)$. We provide a systematic treatment of such series, and give projective bundle formulas which generalize previous results by B. Lawson and S.S.Yau and Elizondo. The techniques used involve the Chow quotients introduced by Kapranov, and this allows the …
We introduce extended toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. We use an extended toric Deligne-Mumford stack to get the toric stack bundle and compute its orbifold Chow ring. Finally we generalize one result of Borisov, Chen and Smith so that the orbifold Chow ring of the toric stack bundle and the Chow ring of its crepant resolution are fibres of a flat family.
For a smooth projective variety $P$, we construct a Cartier divisor supported on the incidence locus in $\mathscr{C}_a (P) \times \mathscr{C}_{\dim(P)-a-1}(P)$. There is a natural definition of the corresponding line bundle on a product of Hilbert schemes, and we show this bundle descends to the Chow varieties. This answers a question posed by Mazur.
We bound from below the complexity of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle in the Chow ring of the moduli space of curves: no formulas in terms of classes of degrees 1 and 2 can exist. As a consequence of the Torelli map, the 0-section over the second Voronoi compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties also can not be expressed in terms of classes of degree 1 and 2. Along the way, we establish new cases of Pixton's conjecture for tautological relations. In the log Chow ring of the moduli space of curves, however, we prove that the top Chern class of the Hodge b…
In this paper, we investigate Murre's conjecture on the existence of a Chow--Kuenneth decomposition for a rational homogeneous bundle $Z\to S$ over a smooth variety, defined over complex numbers. Chow-Künneth decomposition is exhibited for $Z$ whenever $S$ has a Chow--Kuenneth decomposition. The same conclusion holds for a class of log homogeneous varieties, studied by M. Brion.
In this paper we give a complete description of the integral Chow ring of the stack $\mathscr{H}_{g,1}$ of 1-pointed hyperelliptic curves, lifting relations and generators from the Chow ring of $\mathscr{H}_g$. We also give a geometric interpretation for the generators.
For any vector bundle $V$ on a toric Deligne-Mumford stack $\ix$ the formalism of \cite{EJK:16} defines two intertial products $\star_{V^{+}}$ and $\star_{V^{-}}$ on the Chow group of the inertia stack. We give an explicit presentation for the integral $\star_{V^+}$ and $\star_{V^-}$ Chow rings, extending earlier work of Boris-Chen-Smith \cite{BCS:05} and Jiang-Tsen \cite{JiTs:10} in the orbifold Chow ring case, which corresponds to $V = 0$. We also describe an {\em asymptotic} product on the rational Chow group of the inertia stack obtained by letting the rank of the bundle $V$ go to infinity…
We determine the integral Chow and cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathcal{B}_{r,d}$ of rank $r$, degree $d$ vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$ bundles. We first show that the rational Chow ring $A_{\mathbb{Q}}^*(\mathcal{B}_{r,d})$ is a free $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra on $2r+1$ generators. The isomorphism class of this ring happens to be independent of $d$. Then, we prove that the integral Chow ring $A^*(\mathcal{B}_{r,d})$ is torsion-free and provide multiplicative generators for $A^*(\mathcal{B}_{r,d})$ as a subring of $A_{\mathbb{Q}}^*(\mathcal{B}_{r,d})$. From this description, we see that…
This article is about motives of quadric bundles. In the case of odd dimensional fibers and where the basis is of dimension two we give an explicit relative and absolute Chow-Künneth decomposition. This shows that the motive of the quadric bundle is isomorphic to the direct sum of the motive of the base and the Prym motive of a double cover of the discriminant. In particular this is a refinement with $\mathbb Q$ coefficients of a result of Beauville concerning the cohomology and the Chow groups of an odd dimensional quadric bundle over $\mathbb P^2$. This Chow-Künneth decomposition satisfies M…
We prove formulas for the rational Chow motives of moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles and Higgs bundles of rank 3 and coprime degree on a smooth projective curve. Our approach involves identifying criteria to lift identities in (a completion of) the Grothendieck group of effective Chow motives to isomorphisms in the category of Chow motives. For the Higgs moduli space, we use motivic Bialynicki-Birula decompositions associated to a scaling action with variation of stability and wall-crossing for moduli spaces of rank 2 pairs, which occur in the fixed locus of this action.
In 1980, I. Morrison proved that slope stability of a vector bundle of rank 2 over a compact Riemann surface implies Chow stability of the projectivization of the bundle with respect to certain polarizations. Using the notion of balanced metrics and recent work of Donaldson, Wang, and Phong-Sturm, we show that the statement holds for higher rank vector bundles over compact algebraic manifolds of arbitrary dimension that admit constant scalar curvature metric and have discrete automorphism group.
We determine the Chow ring (with Q-coefficients) of M_6 by showing that all Chow classes are tautological. In particular, all algebraic cohomology is tautological, and the natural map from Chow to cohomology is injective. To demonstrate the utility of these methods, we also give quick derivations of the Chow groups of moduli spaces of curves of lower genus. The genus 6 case relies on the particularly beautiful Brill-Noether theory in this case, and in particular on a rank 5 vector bundle "relativizing" a baby case of a celebrated construction of Mukai, which we interpret as a subbundle of the …
The holomorphic invariants introduced by Futaki as obstruction to the asymptotic Chow semistability are studied by an algebraic-geometric point of view and are shown to be the Mumford weights of suitable line bundles on the Hilbert scheme. These invariants are calculated in two special cases. The first is a projective bundle over a curve of genus at least two, and it is shown that it is asymptotically Chow polystable (with every polarization) if and only the underlying vector bundle is slope polystable. This proves a conjecture of Morrison with the extra assumption that the involved polarizati…
We investigate Chow stability of projective bundles P(E) where E is a strictly Gieseker stable bundle over a base manifold that has constant scalar curvature. We show that, for suitable polarisations L, the pair (P(E),L) is Chow stable and give examples for which it is not asymptotically Chow stable.
In 1980, I. Morrison proved that slope stability of a vector bundle of rank 2 over a compact Riemann surface implies Chow stability of the projectivization of the bundle with respect to certain polarizations. We generalized Morrison's result to higher rank vector bundles over compact algebraic manifolds of arbitrary dimension that admit constant scalar curvature metric and have discrete automorphism group. In this article, we give a simple proof for polarizations $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}E^*}(d)\otimes π^* L^k$, where $d$ is a positive integer, $k \gg 0$ and the base manifold is a compact Riema…
We prove a formula for Chow groups of $Quot$-schemes which resolve degeneracy loci of a map between vector bundles, under expected dimension conditions. This result provides a unified way to understand known formulae for various geometric situations such as blowups, Cayley's trick, projectivizations, Grassmannian bundles, flops from Springer type resolutions, as well as provide new phenomena such as formulae for Grassmannain type flips/flops and virtual flips. We also give applications to blowups of determinantal ideals, moduli spaces of linear series on curves, and Hilbert schemes of points o…
We study the ring of characteristic classes with values in the Chow ring for principal $G$-bundles over schemes. If we consider bundles which are locally trivial in the Zariski topology, then we show, for $G$ reductive, that this ring is isomorphic to the Weyl group invariants in the algebra generated by characters of the maximal torus. For general principal bundles the same isomorphism holds after tensoring the coefficients with ${\Bbb Q}$. As a corollary, we show that any (non-torsion) topological characteristic class is algebraic when applied to Zariski locally trivial bundles over complex …
We show that for a K3 surface X the finitely generated subring R(X) of the Chow ring introduced by Beauville and Voisin is preserved under derived equivalences. This is proved by analyzing Chern characters of spherical bundles. As for a K3 surface X defined over a number field all spherical bundles on the associated complex K3 surface are defined over $\bar\QQ$, this is compatible with the Bloch-Beilinson conjecture. Besides the work of Beauville and Voisin, Lazarfeld's result on Brill-Noether theory for curves in K3 surfaces and the deformation theory developed with Macri and Stellari in arXi…
We study the rational Chow motives of certain moduli spaces of vector bundles on a smooth projective curve with additional structure (such as a parabolic structure or Higgs field). In the parabolic case, these moduli spaces depend on a choice of stability condition given by weights; our approach is to use explicit descriptions of variation of this stability condition in terms of simple birational transformations (standard flips/flops and Mukai flops) for which we understand the variation of the Chow motives. For moduli spaces of parabolic vector bundles, we describe the change in motive under …
In this paper, we consider the weight $i$ de Rham--Gauss--Manin bundles on a smooth variety arising from a smooth projective morphism $f:X\_U\lrar U$ for $i\geq 0$. We associate to each weight $i$ de Rham bundle, a certain parabolic bundle on $S$ and consider their parabolic Chern characters in the rational Chow groups, for a good compactification $S$ of $U$. We show the triviality of the alternating sum of these parabolic bundles in the (positive degree) rational Chow groups. This removes the hypothesis of semistable reduction in the original result of this kind due to Esnault and Viehweg.
In this paper we explicit the rational Chow ring of the stack consisting of nodal curves of genus 0 with at most 3 nodes: it is a Q-algebra with 10 generators and 11 relations.
The goal of this paper is to compute the rational Chow ring of the stack consisting of nodal curves of genus 0 with at most 3 nodes: it is a Q-algebra with 10 generators and 11 relations.
Fatighenti and Mongardi have defined Fano varieties of type S6 as zero loci of a certain vector bundle on the Grassmannian $\hbox{Gr}(2,10)$. These varieties have 3 Hodge structures of K3 type in their cohomology. We show that the Chow ring of these varieties also displays "K3 type" behaviour.
We show that the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions arises naturally as the integral Chow ring of the algebraic stack of expanded pairs originally described by J. Li, using a more combinatorial description in terms of configurations of line bundles. In particular, we exhibit a gluing map which gives rise to the comultiplication. We then apply the result to calculate the Chow rings of certain stacks of semistable curves.
The Minimal Resolution Conjecture (MRC) for points on a projective variety X predicts that the Betti numbers of general sets of points in X are as small as the geometry (Hilbert function) of X allows. To a large extent, we settle this conjecture for a curve C with general moduli. We show that, independently of the genus, MRC holds for a general linear system of degree d and dimension r on C if and only if d>2r-1. We then proceed to find a full solution to the Ideal Generation Conjecture for curves with general moduli. In a different direction, we prove that K3 surfaces admit Ulrich bundles of …
In the previous article (\cite{S}), we proved that slope stability of a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a polarized manifold $(X,L)$ implies Chow stability of $(\mathbb{P}E^*,\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}E^*}(1)\otimes π^* L^k)$ for $k \gg 0$ if the base manifold has no nontrivial holomorphic vector field and admits a constant scalar curvature metric in the class of $2πc_{1}(L)$. In this article using asymptotic expansions of Bergman kernel on $\textrm{Sym}^d E$, we generalize the main theorem of \cite{S} to polarizations $(\mathbb{P}E^*,\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}E^*}(d)\otimes π^* L^k)$ for $k \gg …
Motivated by the computation of the BPS-invariants on a local Calabi-Yau threefold suggested by S. Katz, we compute the Chow ring and the cohomology ring of the moduli space of stable sheaves of Hilbert polynomial $4m+1$ on the projective plane. As a byproduct, we obtain the total Chern class and Euler characteristics of all line bundles, which provide a numerical data for the strange duality on the plane.
Let $GO(2n)$ be the general orthogonal group scheme (the group of orthogonal similitudes). In the topological category, Y. Holla and N. Nitsure determined the singular cohomology ring $H^*_{\rm sing}(BGO(2n,\mathbb C),\mathbb F_2)$ of the classifying space $BGO(2n,\mathbb C)$ of the corresponding complex Lie group $GO(2n,\mathbb C)$ in terms of explicit generators and relations. The author of the present note showed that over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to $2$, the smooth-étale cohomology ring $H_{\rm sm-ét}^*(BGO(2n),\mathbb F_2)$ of the classifying algebraic st…
We give a theorem of Leray-Hirsch type for Chow groups and use it to study the Hogde and Grothendieck's standard conjectures for algebraic fiber bundles of Leray-Hirsch type. Morevoer, the Hodge conjecture for product varieties will also be considered.
We describe the equivariant Chow ring of the wonderful compactification $X$ of a symmetric space of minimal rank, via restriction to the associated toric variety $Y$. Also, we show that the restrictions to $Y$ of the tangent bundle $T_X$ and its logarithmic analogue $S_X$ decompose into a direct sum of line bundles. This yields closed formulae for the equivariant Chern classes of $T_X$ and $S_X$, and, in turn, for the Chern classes of reductive groups considered by Kiritchenko.
Let $A$ be an Azumaya algebra over a field. If $G$ is the group of automorphisms of $A$ and $X$ denotes a projective homogeneous variety under $G$, we construct in a very explicit way and under suitable hypotheses a bundle $\mathcal{V}$ on $S$, where $S$ is a (generalized) Severi-Brauer variety associated to $A$, and a canonical isomorphism between $X$ and a flag bundle on $\mathcal{V}$. This allows to explicitely compute Chow groups of $X$ in terms of the Chow groups of $S$.
After recalling several constructions of the moduli space of curves of genus zero by different people we give our alternative construction of the moduli space. This gives a simple description of the intersection ring of this space. We give a basis for the Chow groups and an explicit duality between the Chow groups in complementary degrees. There is a recursive description of this algebra by S. Keel. Our presentation is simpler in the sense that there are fewer generators and fewer relations and our description is explicit.
For any odd integer $d$, we give a presentation for the integral Chow ring of the stack $\Mcal_{0}(\Pro^r, d)$, as a quotient of the polynomial ring $\Z[c_1,c_2]$. We describe an efficient set of generators for the ideal of relations, and compute them in generating series form. The paper concludes with explicit computations of some examples for low values of $d$ and $r$, and a conjecture for a minimal set of generators.
We develop a theory of abstract arithmetic Chow rings where the role of the fibers at infinity is played by a complex of abelian groups that computes a suitable cohomology theory. This theory allows the construction of many variants of the arithmetic Chow groups with different properties. As particular cases of this formalism we recover the original arithmetic intersection theory of Gillet and Soulé for projective varieties, we introduce a theory of arithmetic Chow groups which are covariant with respect to arbitrary proper morphisms, and we develop a theory of arithmetic Chow rings using a co…
We present a version of projective bundle theorem in MW-motives (resp. Chow-Witt rings), which says that $\widetilde{CH}^*(\mathbb{P}(E))$ is determined by $\widetilde{CH}^*(X)$, $\widetilde{CH}^*(X,det(E)^{\vee})$, $CH^*(X)$ and $Sq^2$ for smooth quasi-projective schemes $X$ and vector bundles $E$ over $X$ with $e(E^{\vee})=0\in H^n(X,W(det(E)))$, provided that $_2CH^*(X)=0$. As an application, we compute the MW-motives of blow-ups with smooth centers. Moreover, we discuss the invariance of Chow-Witt cycles of projective bundles under automorphisms of vector bundles.
In the last decades there have been introduced different concepts of stability for projective varieties. In this paper we give a natural and intrinsic criterion of the Chow, and Hilbert, stability for complex irreducible smooth projective curves $C\subset \mathbb P ^n$. Namely, if the restriction $T\mathbb P_{|C} ^n$ of the tangent bundle of $\mathbb P ^n$ to $C$ is stable then $C\subset \mathbb P ^n$ is Chow stable, and hence Hilbert stable. We apply this criterion to describe a smooth open set of the irreducible component $Hilb^{P(t),s}_{Ch}$ of the Hilbert scheme of $\mathbb{P} ^n$ containi…
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the intersection theory of the moduli spaces of stable maps of degree two from two-pointed, genus zero nodal curves to arbitrary-dimensional projective space. Toward this end, first the Betti numbers of \bar{M}_{0,2}(P^r,2) are computed using Serre polynomials and equivariant Serre polynomials. Then, specializing to the space \bar{M}_{0,2}(P^1,2), generators and relations for the Chow ring are given. Chow rings of simpler spaces are also described, and the method of localization and linear algebra is developed. Both tools are used in finding the rel…
Given a sequence of point blow-ups of smooth n-dimensional projective varieties $Z_{i}$ defined over an algebraically closed field k, $Z_{s}\rightarrow Z_{s-1}\rightarrow ...\rightarrow Z_{1}\rightarrow Z_{0}$, we give two presentations of the Chow ring of its sky $A^{\bullet}(Z_{s})$. The first one using the classes of the total transforms of the exceptional components as generators and the second one using the classes of the strict transforms ones. We prove that the skies of two sequences of point blow-ups of the same length have isomorphic Chow rings. Finally we give a characterization of f…
Given a vector bundle on a $\mathbb{P}^1$ bundle, the base is stratified by degeneracy loci measuring the spitting type of the vector bundle restricted to each fiber. The classes of these degeneracy loci in the Chow ring or cohomology ring of the base are natural invariants characterizing the degenerations of the vector bundle. When these degeneracy loci occur in the expected codimension, we find their classes. This yields universal formulas for degeneracy classes in terms of naturally arising vector bundles on the base. Our results hold over arbitrary fields of any characteristic.
A result of A. King and C. Walter asserts that the Chow ring of a fine quiver moduli space is generated by the Chern classes of universal bundles if the quiver is acyclic. We will show that defining relations between these Chern classes arise geometrically as degeneracy loci associated to the universal representation.
We compute rational equivariant Chow rings with respect to a torus of quiver moduli spaces. We derive a presentation in terms of generators and relations, use torus localization to identify it as a subring of the Chow ring of the fixed point locus, and we compare the two descriptions.
We prove the bigness of the Chow-Mumford line bundle associated to a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein family of log Fano varieties of maximal variation with uniformly K-stable general geometric fibers. This result generalizes a recent theorem of Codogni and Patakfalvi to the logarithmic setting.
We show that under some assumptions on the monodromy group some combinations of higher Chern classes of flat vector bundles are torsion in the Chow group. Similar results hold for flat vector bundles that deform to such flat vector bundles (also in case of quasi-projective varieties). The results are motivated by Bloch's conjecture on Chern classes of flat vector bundles on smooth complex projective varities but in some cases they give a more precise information. We also study Higgs version of Bloch's conjecture and analogous problems in the positive characteristic case.
Let $ϕ:X\rightarrow B$ be a Lagrangian fibration on a projective irreducible hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension $\leq8$. Let $M\in {\rm Pic}\,X$ be a line bundle whose restriction to the general fiber $X_b$ of $ϕ$ is topologically trivial. We prove that if the fibration has maximal variation or is isotrivial, the set of points $b$ such that the restriction $M_{\mid X_b}$ is torsion is dense in $B$. We give an application to the Chow ring of $X$. We prove a similar result for elliptic fibrations which gives a toy model for the argument.
We continue the study of the Chow ring of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ of prestable curves begun in [arXiv:2012.09887v2]. In genus $0$, we show that the Chow ring of $\mathfrak{M}_{0,n}$ coincides with the tautological ring and give a complete description in terms of (additive) generators and relations. This generalizes earlier results by Keel and Kontsevich-Manin for the spaces of stable curves. Our argument uses the boundary stratification of the moduli stack together with the study of the first higher Chow groups of the strata, in particular providing a new proof of the results of …
The Grothendieck ring of Chow motives admits two natural opposite $λ$-ring structures, one of which is a special structure allowing the definition of Adams operations on the ring. In this work I present algorithms which allow an effective simplification of expressions that involve both $λ$-ring structures, as well as Adams operations. In particular, these algorithms allow the symbolic simplification of algebraic expressions in the sub-$λ$-ring of motives generated by a finite set of curves into polynomial expressions in a small set of motivic generators. As a consequence, the explicit computat…
