In the class of Ornstein transformations the mixing property satisfies a 0-1 law. Here we consider Ornstein's construction with bounded cutting parameter. In fact, these latter transformations are not mixing, however it is proved that the weak mixing property occurs with probability one. Our situation is similar to the case of interval exchange transformations whose link with the cutting and stacking construction relies in a dynamical process called Rauzy induction.
Mixing by cutting-and-shuffling can be mathematically described by the dynamics of piecewise isometries (PWIs), higher dimensional analogs of one-dimensional interval exchange transformations. In a two-dimensional domain under a PWI, the exceptional set, $\bar{E}$, which is created by the accumulation of cutting lines (the union of all iterates of cutting lines and all points that pass arbitrarily close to a cutting line), defines where mixing is possible but not guaranteed. There is structure within $\bar{E}$ that directly influences the mixing potential of the PWI. Here we provide new comput…
We examine the dynamics of cutting-and-shuffling a hemispherical shell driven by alternate rotation about two horizontal axes using the framework of piecewise isometry (PWI) theory. Previous restrictions on how the domain is cut-and-shuffled are relaxed to allow for non-orthogonal rotation axes, adding a new degree of freedom to the PWI. A new computational method for efficiently executing the cutting-and-shuffling using parallel processing allows for extensive parameter sweeps and investigations of mixing protocols that produce a low degree of mixing. Non-orthogonal rotation axes break some o…
Mixing by cutting-and-shuffling can be understood and predicted using dynamical systems based tools and techniques. In existing studies, mixing is generated by maps that repeat the same cut-and-shuffle process at every iteration, in a "fixed" manner. However, mixing can be greatly improved by varying the cut-and-shuffle parameters at each step, using a "variable" approach. To demonstrate this approach, we show how to optimize mixing by cutting-and-shuffling on the one-dimensional line interval, known as an interval exchange transformation (IET). Mixing can be significantly improved by optimizi…
Low-dimensional dynamical systems are fruitful models for mixing in fluid and granular flows. We study a one-dimensional discontinuous dynamical system (termed "cutting and shuffling" of a line segment), and we present a comprehensive computational study of its finite-time mixing properties including the effect of diffusion. To explore a large parameter space, we introduce fit functions for two mixing metrics of choice: the number of cutting interfaces (a standard quantity in dynamical systems theory of interval exchange transformations) and a mixing norm (a more physical measure of mixing). W…
In this paper we give a geometric interpretation of the renormalization algorithm and of the continued fraction map that we introduced in arxiv:0905.0871 to give a characterization of symbolic sequences for linear flows in the regular octagon. We interpret this algorithm as renormalization on the Teichmueller disk of the octagon and explain the relation with Teichmueller geodesic flow. This connection is analogous to the classical relation between Sturmian sequences, continued fractions and geodesic flow on the modular surface. We use this connection to construct the natural extension and the …
We present a computational study of finite-time mixing of a line segment by cutting and shuffling. A family of one-dimensional interval exchange transformations is constructed as a model system in which to study these types of mixing processes. Illustrative examples of the mixing behaviors, including pathological cases that violate the assumptions of the known governing theorems and lead to poor mixing, are shown. Since the mathematical theory applies as the number of iterations of the map goes to infinity, we introduce practical measures of mixing (the percent unmixed and the number of interm…
We study topological mixing properties and the maximal equicontinuous factor of rank-one subshifts as topological dynamical systems. We show that the maximal equicontinuous factor of a rank-one subshift is finite. We also determine all the finite factors of a rank-one shift with a condition involving the cutting and spacer parameters. For rank-one subshifts with bounded spacer parameter we completely characterize weak mixing and mixing. For rank-one subshifts with unbounded spacer parameter we prove some sufficient conditions for weak mixing and mixing. We also construct some examples showing …
We consider skew extensions of expanding maps by compact Lie groups. For a class of natural invariant measures, we prove an explicit lower bound on the rate of (exponential) mixing involving topological pressure. Proof uses representation theory and some elliptic pde estimates.
We establish sharp bounds on the mixing rates of a class of two dimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic symplectic maps. This provides a primer on how to investigate such questions in a concrete example and, at the same time, it solves a controversy between previous rigorous results and numerical experiments.
We study the properties of `infinite-volume mixing' for two classes of intermittent maps: expanding maps $[0,1] \longrightarrow [0,1]$ with an indifferent fixed point at 0 preserving an infinite, absolutely continuous measure, and expanding maps $\mathbb{R}^+ \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}^+$ with an indifferent fixed point at $+\infty$ preserving the Lebesgue measure. All maps have full branches. While certain properties are easily adjudicated, the so-called global-local mixing, namely the decorrelation of a global and a local observable, is harder to prove. We do this for two subclasses of syste…
We study circle extensions of analytic Anosov maps on the two torus: these are examples of partially hyperbolic maps for which the qualitative ergodic theory is well understood. In this paper we investigate rates of mixing (for the SRB measure) and prove explicit lower bounds involving the topological pressure of two times the unstable Jacobian. In particular we study the case when the extension function ("roof function") is given by a random trigonometric polynomial.
We prove that a large class of expanding maps of the unit interval with a $C^2$-regular indifferent point in 0 and full increasing branches are global-local mixing. This class includes the standard Pomeau-Manneville maps $T(x) = x + x^{p+1}$ mod 1 ($p \ge 1$), the Liverani-Saussol-Vaienti maps (with index $p \ge 1$) and many generalizations thereof.
It is known that locally constant toral extensions of hyperbolic systems can never mix at an exponential rate. In this note we exhibit some examples of non-abelian locally constant compact extensions of the shift map which are exponentially mixing for Holder-$L^2$ observables. The proof rests on a result of Bourgain-Gamburd and a decoupling argument.
We give a fairly complete characterization of the exact components of a large class of uniformly expanding Markov maps of $\mathbb{R}$. Using this result, for a class of $\mathbb{Z}$-invariant maps and finite modifications thereof, we prove certain properties of infinite mixing recently introduced by the author.
We establish the mixing property for a family of Lebesgue measure preserving toral maps composed of two piecewise linear shears, the first of which is non-monotonic. The maps serve as a basic model for the `stretching and folding' action in laminar fluid mixing, in particular flows where boundary conditions give rise to non-monotonic flow profiles. The family can be viewed as the parameter space between two well known systems, Arnold's Cat Map and a map due to Cerbelli and Giona, both of which possess finite Markov partitions and straightforward to prove mixing properties. However, no such fin…

We construct a $C^r$ transformation of the interval (or the torus) which is topologically mixing but has no invariant measure of maximal entropy. Whereas the assumption of $C^{\infty}$ ensures existence of maximal measures for an interval map, it shows we cannot weaken the smoothness assumption. We also compute the local entropy of the example.
For an integer $m \geq 2$, let $\mathcal{P}_m$ be the partition of the unit interval $I$ into $m$ equal subintervals, and let $\mathcal{F}_m$ be the class of piecewise linear maps on $I$ with constant slope $\pm m$ on each element of $\mathcal{P}_m$. We investigate the effect on mixing properties when $f \in \mathcal{F}_m$ is composed with the interval exchange map given by a permutation $σ\in S_N$ interchanging the $N$ subintervals of $\mathcal{P}_N$. This extends the work in a previous paper [N.P. Byott, M. Holland and Y. Zhang, DCDS, {\bf 33}, (2013) 3365--3390], where we considered only th…
We consider random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps, possibly having a non-degenerate critical set. We prove that, if the Lebesgue measure of the set of points failing the non-uniform expansion or the slow recurrence to the critical set at a certain time, for almost all random orbits, decays in a (stretched) exponential fashion, then the decay of correlations along random orbits is stretched exponential, up to some waiting time. As applications, we obtain almost sure stretched exponential decay of random correlations for Viana maps, as for a class of non-uniformly expanding local …
We show that genuinely higher rank expanding actions of abelian semi-groups on compact manifolds are $C^{\infty}$-conjugate to affine actions on infra-nilmanifolds. This is based on the classification of expanding diffeomorphisms up to \holder conjugacy by Gromov and Shub, and is similar to recent work on smooth classification of higher rank Anosov actions on tori and nilmanifolds. To prove regularity of the conjugacy in the higher rank setting, we establish exponential mixing of solenoid actions induced from semi-group actions by nilmanifold endomorphisms, a result of independent interest. We…
We consider a family $\mathcal F$ of maps with two branches and a common neutral fixed point $0$ such that the order of tangency at $0$ belongs to some interval $[α_0, α_1]\subset (0, 1)$. Maps in $\mathcal F$ do not necessarily share a common Markov partition. At each step a member of $\mathcal F$ is chosen independently with respect to the uniform distribution on $[α_0, α_1]$. We show that the construction of the random tower in Bahsoun-Bose-Ruziboev \cite{BBR} with \emph{general return time} can be carried out for random compositions of such maps. Thus their general results are applicable a…
We prove results on mixing and mixing rates for toral extensions of nonuniformly expanding maps with subexponential decay of correlations. Both the finite and infinite measure settings are considered. Under a Dolgopyat-type condition on nonexistence of approximate eigenfunctions, we prove that existing results for (possibly nonMarkovian) nonuniformly expanding maps hold also for their toral extensions.

We investigate the properties of chain recurrent, chain transitive, and chain mixing maps (generalizations of the well-known notions of non-wandering, topologically transitive, and topologically mixing maps). We describe the structure of chain transitive maps. These notions of recurrence are defined using $\ep$-chains, and the minimal lengths of these $\ep$-chains give a way to measure recurrence time (chain recurrence and chain mixing times). We give upper and lower bounds for these recurrence times and relate the chain mixing time to topological entropy.
We investigate the mixing coefficients of interval maps satisfying Rychlik's conditions. A mixing Lasota-Yorke map is reverse $ϕ$-mixing. If its invariant density is uniformly bounded away from 0, it is $ϕ$-mixing iff all images of all orders are big in which case it is $ψ$-mixing. Among $\b$-transformations, non-$ϕ$-mixing is generic. In this sense, the asymmetry of $ϕ$-mixing is natural.
In a recent paper, Melbourne and Terhesiu [Operator renewal theory and mixing rates for dynamical systems with infinite measure, Invent. Math. 189 (2012), 61-110] obtained results on mixing and mixing rates for a large class of noninvertible maps preserving an infinite ergodic invariant measure. Here, we are concerned with extending these results to the invertible setting. Mixing is established for a large class of infinite measure invertible maps. Assuming additional structure, in particular exponential contraction along stable manifolds, it is possible to obtain good results on mixing rates …
Let $f$ be a Hénon-Sibony map (regular polynomial automorphism) of $\mathbb{C}^k$ and let $μ$ be the equilibrium measure of $f$. In this paper we prove that $μ$ is exponentially mixing for plurisubharmonic test functions.
We study dynamics of continuous maps on compact metrizable spaces containing a free interval (i.e., an open subset homeomorphic to an open interval). A special attention is paid to relationships between topological transitivity, weak and strong topological mixing, dense periodicity and topological entropy as well as to the topological structure of minimal sets. In particular, a trichotomy for minimal sets and a dichotomy for transitive maps are proved.
We develop an abstract framework for obtaining optimal rates of mixing and higher order asymptotics for infinite measure semiflows. Previously, such results were restricted to the situation where there is a first return Poincaré map that is uniformly expanding and Markov. As illustrations of the method, we consider semiflows over nonMarkov Pomeau-Manneville intermittent maps with infinite measure, and we also obtain mixing rates for semiflows over Collet-Eckmann maps with nonintegrable roof function.
In this paper we introduce and study some stronger forms of transitivity like total transitivity, weakly mixing for maps on G-spaces. We obtain their relationship with the earlier defined notion of strongly mixing for maps on G-spaces. We also study G-minimal maps on G-spaces in detail.
If a system mixes too slowly, putting a hole in it can completely destroy the richness of the dynamics. Here we study this instability for a class of intermittent maps with a family of slowly mixing measures. We show that there are three regimes: 1) standard hyperbolic-like behavior where the rate of mixing is faster than the rate of escape through the hole, there is a unique limiting absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure (accim) and there is a complete thermodynamic description of the dynamics on the survivor set; 2) an intermediate regime, where the rate of mixing and escape …
Akin and Kolyada in 2003 [E. Akin, S. Kolyada, Li-Yorke sensitivity, Nonlinearity 16 (2003) 1421 - 1433] introduced the notion of Li-Yorke sensitivity. They proved that every weak mixing system $(X, T)$, where $X$ is a compact metric space and $T$ a continuous map of $X$ is Li-Yorke sensitive. An example of Li-Yorke sensitive system without weak mixing factors was given in [M. Čiklová, Li-Yorke sensitive minimal maps, Nonlinearity 19 (2006) 517 - 529] (see also [M. Čiklová-Ml\'ıchová, Li-Yorke sensitive minimal maps II, Nonlinearity 22 (2009) 1569 -1573]). In their paper, Akin and Kolyada conj…
In this work we obtain mixing (and in some cases sharp mixing rates) for a reasonable large class of invertible systems preserving an infinite measure. The examples considered here are the invertible analogue of both Markov and non Markov unit interval maps. Moreover, we obtain results on the decay of correlation in the finite case of invertible non Markov maps, which, to our knowledge, were not previously addressed. The present method consists of a combination of the framework of operator renewal theory, as introduced in the context of dynamical systems by Sarig [39], with the framework of fu…
For a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps in two dimensions, we propose a combinatorial definition of topological entropy by counting the maximal, open, connected components of the phase space on which iterates of the map are smooth. We prove that this quantity dominates the measure theoretic entropies of all invariant probability measures of the system, and then construct an invariant measure whose entropy equals the proposed topological entropy. We prove that our measure is the unique measure of maximal entropy, that it is ergodic, gives positive measure to every open set, and has exponential…
We study random transformations built from intermittent maps on the unit interval that share a common neutral fixed point. We focus mainly on random selections of Pomeu-Manneville-type maps $T_α$ using the full parameter range $0< α< \infty$, in general. We derive a number of results around a common theme that illustrates in detail how the constituent map that is fastest mixing (i.e.\ smallest $α$) combined with details of the randomizing process, determines the asymptotic properties of the random transformation. Our key result (Theorem 1.1) establishes sharp estimates on the position of retur…
In this paper we show how to apply classical probabilistic tools for partial sums $\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}φ\circτ^j$ generated by a skew product $τ$, built over a sufficiently well mixing base map and a random expanding dynamical system. Under certain regularity assumptions on the observable $φ$, we obtain a central limit theorem (CLT) with rates, a functional CLT, an almost sure invariance principle (ASIP), a moderate deviations principle, several exponential concentration inequalities and Rosenthal type moment estimates for skew products with $α, ϕ$ or $ψ$ mixing base maps and expanding on the aver…
We study rates of mixing for small random perturbations of one dimensional Lorenz maps. Using a random tower construction, we prove that, for Holder observables, the random system admits exponential rates of quenched correlation decay.
We investigate a class of area preserving non-uniformly hyperbolic maps of the two torus. First we establish some results on the regularity of the invariant foliations, then we use this knowledge to estimate the rate of mixing.
In this paper, we study the dynamics of a non-autonomous dynamical system $(X,\mathbb{F})$ generated by a sequence $(f_n)$ of continuous self maps converging uniformly to $f$. We relate the dynamics of the non-autonomous system $(X,\mathbb{F})$ with the dynamics of $(X,f)$. We prove that if the family $\mathbb{F}$ commutes with $f$ and $(f_n)$ converges to $f$ at a "sufficiently fast rate", many of the dynamical properties for the systems $(X,\mathbb{F})$ and $(X,f)$ coincide. In the procees we establish equivalence of properties like equicontinuity, minimality and denseness of proximal pairs …
We develop a theory of operator renewal sequences in the context of infinite ergodic theory. For large classes of dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure, we determine the asymptotic behaviour of iterates $L^n$ of the transfer operator. This was previously an intractable problem. Examples of systems covered by our results include (i) parabolic rational maps of the complex plane and (ii) (not necessarily Markovian) nonuniformly expanding interval maps with indifferent fixed points. In addition, we give a particularly simple proof of pointwise dual ergodicity (asymptotic behaviour of $\…
We discuss recent results on decay of correlations for non-uniformly expanding maps. Throughout the discussion, we address the question of why different dynamical systems have different rates of decay of correlations and how this may reflect underlying geometrical characteristics of the system.
In this paper we will show that if a sequence of natural numbers satisfies a certain growth rate, then there is a weak mixing diffeomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^2$ that is uniformly rigid with respect to that sequence. The proof is based on a quantitative version of the Anosov-Katok-method with explicitly defined conjugation maps and the constructions are done in the $C^{\infty}$-topology as well as in the real-analytic topology.
We obtain central limit theorem, local limit theorems and renewal theorems for stationary processes generated by skew product maps $T(\om,x)=(\te\om,T_\om x)$ together with a $T$-invariant measure, whose base map $\te$ satisfies certain topological and mixing conditions and the maps $T_\om$ on the fibers are certain non-singular distance expanding maps. Our results hold true when $\te$ is either a sufficiently fast mixing Markov shift or a (non-uniform) Young tower with at least one periodic point and polynomial tails. %In fact, our conditions will be satisfied %when $\om$ is the whole orbit t…
