For a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps in two dimensions, we propose a combinatorial definition of topological entropy by counting the maximal, open, connected components of the phase space on which iterates of the map are smooth. We prove that this quantity dominates the measure theoretic entropies of all invariant probability measures of the system, and then construct an invariant measure whose entropy equals the proposed topological entropy. We prove that our measure is the unique measure of maximal entropy, that it is ergodic, gives positive measure to every open set, and has exponential decay of correlations against Hölder continuous functions. As a consequence, we also prove a lower bound on the rate of growth of periodic orbits. The main tool used in the paper is the construction of anisotropic Banach spaces of distributions on which the relevant weighted transfer operator has a spectral gap. We then construct our measure of maximal entropy by taking a product of left and right maximal eigenvectors of this operator.
We study non-invertible piecewise hyperbolic maps in the plane. The Hausdorff dimension of the attractor is calculated in terms of the Lyapunov exponents, provided that the map satisfies a transversality condition. Explicit examples of maps for which this condition holds are given.
A class of piecewise affine hyperbolic maps on a bounded subset of the plane is considered. It is shown that if a map from this class is sufficiently area-expanding then almost surely this map has an absolutely continuous invariant measure.
We introduce a weak transversality condition for piecewise C^{1+α} and piecewise hyperbolic maps which admit a C^{1+α} stable distribution. We show good bounds on the essential spectral radius of the associated transfer operators acting on classical anisotropic Sobolev spaces of Triebel-Lizorkin type. In many cases, we obtain a spectral gap from which we deduce the existence of finitely many physical measures with basin of total measure. The analysis relies on standard techniques (in particular complex interpolation) and applies also to piecewise expanding maps and to Anosov diffeomorphisms, g…
On existence, uniqueness and numerical approximation of impulsive differential equations with adaptive state-dependent delays using equations with piecewise-constant arguments
We consider a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps from the unit square to itself preserving a contracting foliation and inducing a piecewise expanding quotient map, with infinite derivative (like the first return maps of Lorenz like flows). We show how the physical measure of those systems can be rigorously approximated with an explicitly given bound on the error, with respect to the Wasserstein distance. We apply this to the rigorous computation of the dimension of the measure. We present a rigorous implementation of the algorithms using interval arithmetics, and the result of the computation …
We consider piecewise cone hyperbolic systems satisfying a bunching condition and we obtain a bound on the essential spectral radius of the associated weighted transfer operators acting on anisotropic Sobolev spaces. The bunching condition is always satisfied in dimension two, and our results give a unifying treatment of the work of Demers-Liverani and our previous work. When the complexity is subexponential, our bound implies a spectral gap for the transfer operator corresponding to the physical measures in many cases (for example if $T$ preserves volume, or if the stable dimension is equal t…
We consider the dynamics of `nonlinear tent maps': piecewise smooth unimodal maps with nowhere vanishing derivative. We show that if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable, then all its periodic orbits of sufficiently high period are hyperbolic repelling. If additionally all periodic orbits of $f$ are hyperbolic, then $f$ has at most finitely many periodic attractors and there is a hyperbolic expansion outside the basins of these periodic attractors. In particular, if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable and all its periodic orbits are hyperbolic repelli…
We prove the existence of Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measures for a class of $C^2$ self-mappings of a rectangle with unbounded derivatives. The results can be regarded as a generalization of a well-known one dimensional Folklore Theorem on the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures. In an earlier paper analogous results were stated and the proofs were sketched for the case of invertible systems. Here we give complete proofs in the more general case of noninvertible systems, and, in particular, develop the theory of stable and unstable manifolds for maps with unbounded derivatives.
We investigate the statistical properties of a piecewise smooth dynamical system by studying directly the action of the transfer operator on appropriate spaces of distributions. We accomplish such a program in the case of two-dimensional maps with uniformly bounded second derivative, but we are confident that the present approach can be successful in much greater generality (we hope including higher dimensional billiards). For the class of systems at hand, we obtain a complete description of the SRB measures, their statistical properties and their stability with respect to many types of pertur…
We prove exponential decay of correlations for a realistic model of piecewise hyperbolic flows preserving a contact form, in dimension three. This is the first time exponential decay of correlations is proved for continuous-time dynamics with singularities on a manifold. Our proof combines the second author's version of Dolgopyat's estimates for contact flows and the first author's work with Gouëzel on piecewise hyperbolic discrete-time dynamics. (Presentation revised.)
We extend the recent spectral approach for quenched limit theorems developed for piecewise expanding dynamics under general random driving [DrFrGTVa18] to quenched random piecewise hyperbolic dynamics including some classes of billiards. For general ergodic sequences of maps in a neighbourhood of a hyperbolic map we prove a quenched large deviations principle (LDP), central limit theorem (CLT), and local central limit theorem (LCLT).
A class of piecewise $C^2$ Lozi-like maps in three-dimensional Euclidean spaces is introduced, and the existence of Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measures is studied, where the dimension of the instability is equal to two. Further, an example with computer simulations is provided to illustrate the theoretical results.

We prove that any 3-dimensional singular hyperbolic attractor admits for any Hölder continuous potential $V$ at most one equilibrium state for $V$ among regular measures. We give a condition on $V$ which ensures that no singularity can be an equilibrium state. Thus, for these $V$'s, there exists a unique equilibrium state and it is a regular measure. Applying this for $V\equiv 0$, we show that any 3-dimensional singular hyperbolic attractor admits a unique measure of maximal entropy.
We consider polygonal billiards with collisions contracting the reflection angle towards the normal to the boundary of the table. In previous work, we proved that such billiards has a finite number of ergodic SRB measures supported on hyperbolic generalized attractors. Here we study the relation of these measures with the ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (acips) of the slap map, the 1-dimensional map obtained from the billiard map when the angle of reflection is always equal to zero. Our main result states that for a generic polygon, if the reflection law has a Lips…
When high-dimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic chaotic systems undergo dynamical perturbations, their long-time statistics are generally observed to respond differentiably with respect to the perturbation. Although important in applications, this differentiability, which is thought to be connected to the dimensionality of the system, has remained resistant to rigorous study. To model non-uniformly hyperbolic systems, we consider a family of the mathematically tractable class of piecewise smooth hyperbolic maps, the Lozi maps. For these maps we prove that the existence of a formal derivative of…
We construct inducing schemes for general multi-dimensional piecewise expanding maps where the base transformation is Gibbs-Markov and the return times have exponential tails. Such structures are a crucial tool in proving statistical properties of dynamical systems with some hyperbolicity.
In this paper we improve the results of \cite{MT} and show that a weak hyperbolic transitivity implies the uniqueness of hyperbolic SRB measures. As an important corollary, it arises the ergodicity of the system in a conservative setting. It also arises the condition which implies the stable ergodicity as well as the statistical stability for a general $C^2$-regular map.
Recently, there has been an increasing interest on nonautonomous composition of perturbed hyperbolic systems: composing perturbations of a given hyperbolic map $F$ results in statistical behaviour close to that of $F$. We show this fact in the case of piecewise regular expanding maps. In particular, we impose conditions on perturbations of this class of maps that include situations slightly more general than what has been considered so far, and prove that these are stochastically stable in the usual sense. We then prove that the evolution of a given distribution of mass under composition of ti…
We present a simple, computation free and geometrical proof of the following classical result: for a diffeomorphism of a manifold, any compact submanifold which is invariant and normally hyperbolic persists under small perturbations of the diffeomorphism. The persistence of a Lipschitz invariant submanifold follows from an application of the Schauder fixed point theorem to a graph transform, while smoothness and uniqueness of the invariant submanifold are obtained through geometrical arguments. Moreover, our proof provides a new result on persistence and regularity of "topologically" normally …
Consider a multimodal interval map $f$ of $C^3$ with non-flat critical points. We establish several characterizations of the map $f$ is quasi-symmetrically conjugated to a piecewise affine map in the case $f$ is topologically exact and all of its periodic points are hyperbolic repelling. In particular, we give a negative answer to a question posted by Henk Bruin in \cite{Bru96}.
We prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for a family of partially hyperbolic systems, with respect to Holder continuous potentials with small variation. The family comes from the projection, on the center-unstable direction, of a family of partially hyperbolic horseshoes introduced in [Díaz,L., Horita,V., Rios, I., Sambarino, M., Destroying horseshoes via heterodimensional cycles: generating bifurcations inside homoclinic classes, Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, 2009]. For the original three dimensional system, we consider potentials with small variation, constant on loca…
We address the problem of existence and uniqueness (finite- ness) of ergodic equilibrium states for a natural class of partially hyperbolic dynamics homotopic to Anosov. We propose to study the disintegration of equilibrium states along central foliation as a tool to develop the theory of equilibrium states for partially hyperbolic dynamics.
We investigate the properties of absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (ACIPs), especially those measures with bounded variation densities, for piecewise area preserving maps (PAPs) on $\mathbb{R}^d$. This class of maps unifies piecewise isometries (PWIs) and piecewise hyperbolic maps where Lebesgue measure is locally preserved. Using a functional analytic approach, we first explore the relationship between topological transitivity and uniqueness of ACIPs, and then give an approach to construct invariant measures with bounded variation densities for PWIs. Our results "partially"…
For piecewise monotone interval maps we look at Birkhoff spectra for regular potential functions. This means considering the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which the Birkhoff average of the potential takes a fixed value. In the uniformly hyperbolic case we obtain complete results, in the case with parabolic behaviour we are able to describe the part of the sets where the lower Lyapunov exponent is positive. In addition we give some lower bounds on the full spectrum in this case. This is an extension of work of Hofbauer on the entropy and Lyapunov spectra.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the SRB measure for singular partially hyperbolic flow in dimension $d\ge 3$. The proof does not use Poincaré sectional maps, but uses basic properties of thermodynamic formalism.
We find a normal form which describes the high energy dynamics of a class of piecewise smooth Fermi-Ulam ping pong models; depending on the value of a single real parameter, the dynamics can be either hyperbolic or elliptic. In the first case we prove that the set of orbits undergoing Fermi acceleration has zero measure but full Hausdorff dimension. We also show that for almost every orbit the energy eventually falls below a fixed threshold. In the second case we prove that, generically, we have stable periodic orbits for arbitrarily high energies, and that the set of Fermi accelerating orbits…
We give a description of ergodic components of SRB measures in terms of ergodic homoclinic classes associated to hyperbolic periodic points. For transitive surface diffeomorphisms, we prove that there exists at most one SRB measure.
We investigate the decay rates of correlations for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with or without singularities, on piecewise Hölder observables. By constructing a new scheme of coupling methods using the probability renewal theory, we obtain the optimal bounds for decay rates of correlations for a large class of such observables. We also establish the alpha-mixing property for time series generated by these systems, which leads to a vast ranges of limiting theorems. Our results apply to rather general hyperbolic systems with singularities, including Bunimovich flower billiards, semidispersin…
We show stable ergodicity of a class of conservative diffeomorphisms which do not have any hyperbolic invariant subbundle. Moreover the uniqueness of SRB measures for non-conservative $C^1$ perturbations of such diffeomorphisms. This class contains strictly non-partially hyperbolic robustly transitive diffeomorphisms by Bonatti-Viana and so we answer their question about the stable ergodicity of such systems.
The sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of continuous solutions of the Volterra operator equations of the first kind with piecewise continuous kernel are derived. The asymptotic approximation of the parametric family of solutions are constructed in case of non-unique solution. The algorithm for the solution's improvement is proposed using the successive approximations method.
By applying a singular perturbation approach, canard limit cycles exhibited by a general family of singularly perturbed planar piecewise linear (PWL) differential systems are analyzed. The performed study involves both hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic canard limit cycles appearing after both a supercritical and a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The obtained results are completely comparable with those obtained for smooth vector fields. In some sense, the manuscript can be understood as an extension towards the PWL framework of the results obtained for smooth systems by Krupa and Szmolyan [18]. In a…
We analyze the general problem of determining optimally dense packings, in a Euclidean or hyperbolic space, of congruent copies of some fixed finite set of bodies. We are strongly guided by examples of aperiodic tilings in Euclidean space and a detailed analysis of a new family of examples in the hyperbolic plane. Our goal is to understand qualitative features of such optimum density problems, in particular the appropriate meaning of the uniqueness of solutions, and the role of symmetry in classfying optimally dense packings.
It is known that hyperbolic dynamical systems admit a unique invariant probability measure with maximal entropy. We prove an effective version of this statement and use it to estimate an upper bound for Hausdorff dimension of exceptional sets arising from dynamics.
