We prove the existence of Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measures for a class of $C^2$ self-mappings of a rectangle with unbounded derivatives. The results can be regarded as a generalization of a well-known one dimensional Folklore Theorem on the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures. In an earlier paper analogous results were stated and the proofs were sketched for the case of invertible systems. Here we give complete proofs in the more general case of noninvertible systems, and, in particular, develop the theory of stable and unstable manifolds for maps with unbounded derivatives.
We study non-invertible piecewise hyperbolic maps in the plane. The Hausdorff dimension of the attractor is calculated in terms of the Lyapunov exponents, provided that the map satisfies a transversality condition. Explicit examples of maps for which this condition holds are given.
A class of piecewise affine hyperbolic maps on a bounded subset of the plane is considered. It is shown that if a map from this class is sufficiently area-expanding then almost surely this map has an absolutely continuous invariant measure.
We introduce a weak transversality condition for piecewise C^{1+α} and piecewise hyperbolic maps which admit a C^{1+α} stable distribution. We show good bounds on the essential spectral radius of the associated transfer operators acting on classical anisotropic Sobolev spaces of Triebel-Lizorkin type. In many cases, we obtain a spectral gap from which we deduce the existence of finitely many physical measures with basin of total measure. The analysis relies on standard techniques (in particular complex interpolation) and applies also to piecewise expanding maps and to Anosov diffeomorphisms, g…
We consider a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps from the unit square to itself preserving a contracting foliation and inducing a piecewise expanding quotient map, with infinite derivative (like the first return maps of Lorenz like flows). We show how the physical measure of those systems can be rigorously approximated with an explicitly given bound on the error, with respect to the Wasserstein distance. We apply this to the rigorous computation of the dimension of the measure. We present a rigorous implementation of the algorithms using interval arithmetics, and the result of the computation …
We consider piecewise cone hyperbolic systems satisfying a bunching condition and we obtain a bound on the essential spectral radius of the associated weighted transfer operators acting on anisotropic Sobolev spaces. The bunching condition is always satisfied in dimension two, and our results give a unifying treatment of the work of Demers-Liverani and our previous work. When the complexity is subexponential, our bound implies a spectral gap for the transfer operator corresponding to the physical measures in many cases (for example if $T$ preserves volume, or if the stable dimension is equal t…
We consider the dynamics of `nonlinear tent maps': piecewise smooth unimodal maps with nowhere vanishing derivative. We show that if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable, then all its periodic orbits of sufficiently high period are hyperbolic repelling. If additionally all periodic orbits of $f$ are hyperbolic, then $f$ has at most finitely many periodic attractors and there is a hyperbolic expansion outside the basins of these periodic attractors. In particular, if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable and all its periodic orbits are hyperbolic repelli…
We investigate the statistical properties of a piecewise smooth dynamical system by studying directly the action of the transfer operator on appropriate spaces of distributions. We accomplish such a program in the case of two-dimensional maps with uniformly bounded second derivative, but we are confident that the present approach can be successful in much greater generality (we hope including higher dimensional billiards). For the class of systems at hand, we obtain a complete description of the SRB measures, their statistical properties and their stability with respect to many types of pertur…
We prove exponential decay of correlations for a realistic model of piecewise hyperbolic flows preserving a contact form, in dimension three. This is the first time exponential decay of correlations is proved for continuous-time dynamics with singularities on a manifold. Our proof combines the second author's version of Dolgopyat's estimates for contact flows and the first author's work with Gouëzel on piecewise hyperbolic discrete-time dynamics. (Presentation revised.)
We extend the recent spectral approach for quenched limit theorems developed for piecewise expanding dynamics under general random driving [DrFrGTVa18] to quenched random piecewise hyperbolic dynamics including some classes of billiards. For general ergodic sequences of maps in a neighbourhood of a hyperbolic map we prove a quenched large deviations principle (LDP), central limit theorem (CLT), and local central limit theorem (LCLT).
A class of piecewise $C^2$ Lozi-like maps in three-dimensional Euclidean spaces is introduced, and the existence of Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measures is studied, where the dimension of the instability is equal to two. Further, an example with computer simulations is provided to illustrate the theoretical results.
For a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps in two dimensions, we propose a combinatorial definition of topological entropy by counting the maximal, open, connected components of the phase space on which iterates of the map are smooth. We prove that this quantity dominates the measure theoretic entropies of all invariant probability measures of the system, and then construct an invariant measure whose entropy equals the proposed topological entropy. We prove that our measure is the unique measure of maximal entropy, that it is ergodic, gives positive measure to every open set, and has exponential…
We consider polygonal billiards with collisions contracting the reflection angle towards the normal to the boundary of the table. In previous work, we proved that such billiards has a finite number of ergodic SRB measures supported on hyperbolic generalized attractors. Here we study the relation of these measures with the ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (acips) of the slap map, the 1-dimensional map obtained from the billiard map when the angle of reflection is always equal to zero. Our main result states that for a generic polygon, if the reflection law has a Lips…
When high-dimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic chaotic systems undergo dynamical perturbations, their long-time statistics are generally observed to respond differentiably with respect to the perturbation. Although important in applications, this differentiability, which is thought to be connected to the dimensionality of the system, has remained resistant to rigorous study. To model non-uniformly hyperbolic systems, we consider a family of the mathematically tractable class of piecewise smooth hyperbolic maps, the Lozi maps. For these maps we prove that the existence of a formal derivative of…
Recently, there has been an increasing interest on nonautonomous composition of perturbed hyperbolic systems: composing perturbations of a given hyperbolic map $F$ results in statistical behaviour close to that of $F$. We show this fact in the case of piecewise regular expanding maps. In particular, we impose conditions on perturbations of this class of maps that include situations slightly more general than what has been considered so far, and prove that these are stochastically stable in the usual sense. We then prove that the evolution of a given distribution of mass under composition of ti…
For piecewise monotone interval maps we look at Birkhoff spectra for regular potential functions. This means considering the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which the Birkhoff average of the potential takes a fixed value. In the uniformly hyperbolic case we obtain complete results, in the case with parabolic behaviour we are able to describe the part of the sets where the lower Lyapunov exponent is positive. In addition we give some lower bounds on the full spectrum in this case. This is an extension of work of Hofbauer on the entropy and Lyapunov spectra.
We investigate the properties of absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (ACIPs), especially those measures with bounded variation densities, for piecewise area preserving maps (PAPs) on $\mathbb{R}^d$. This class of maps unifies piecewise isometries (PWIs) and piecewise hyperbolic maps where Lebesgue measure is locally preserved. Using a functional analytic approach, we first explore the relationship between topological transitivity and uniqueness of ACIPs, and then give an approach to construct invariant measures with bounded variation densities for PWIs. Our results "partially"…
We find a normal form which describes the high energy dynamics of a class of piecewise smooth Fermi-Ulam ping pong models; depending on the value of a single real parameter, the dynamics can be either hyperbolic or elliptic. In the first case we prove that the set of orbits undergoing Fermi acceleration has zero measure but full Hausdorff dimension. We also show that for almost every orbit the energy eventually falls below a fixed threshold. In the second case we prove that, generically, we have stable periodic orbits for arbitrarily high energies, and that the set of Fermi accelerating orbits…
The limiting slow dynamics of slow-fast, piecewise-linear, continuous systems of ODEs occurs on critical manifolds that are piecewise-linear. At points of non-differentiability, such manifolds are not normally hyperbolic and so the fundamental results of geometric singular perturbation theory do not apply. In this paper it is shown that if the critical manifold is globally stable then the system is forward invariant in a neighbourhood of the critical manifold. It follows that in this neighbourhood the dynamics is given by a regular perturbation of the dynamics on the critical manifold and so d…
For flows, the singular cycles connecting saddle periodic orbit and saddle equilibrium can poten- tially result in the so-called singular horseshoe, which means the existence of a non-uniformly hyperbolic chaotic invariant set. However, it is very hard to find a specific dynamical system that exhibits such singular cycles in general. In this paper, the existence of the singular cycles involved in saddle periodic orbits is studied by two types of piecewise affine systems: one is the piecewise affine system having an admissible saddle point with only real eigenvalues and an admissible saddle per…
The folded node is a singularity associated with loss of normal hyperbolicity in systems where mixtures of slow and fast timescales arise due to singular perturbations. Canards are special solutions that reveal a counteractive feature of the local dynamics, namely trajectories that flow from attractive regions of space into repulsive regions. An alternative way to model switches between timescales is using piecewise-smooth differential equations. There is presently no adequate theory or method for relating slow-fast and piecewise-smooth models. Here we derive the analogous piecewise-smooth sys…
By applying a singular perturbation approach, canard limit cycles exhibited by a general family of singularly perturbed planar piecewise linear (PWL) differential systems are analyzed. The performed study involves both hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic canard limit cycles appearing after both a supercritical and a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The obtained results are completely comparable with those obtained for smooth vector fields. In some sense, the manuscript can be understood as an extension towards the PWL framework of the results obtained for smooth systems by Krupa and Szmolyan [18]. In a…
We address the problem of understanding the dynamics around typical singular points of $3D$ piecewise smooth vector fields. A model $Z_0$ in $3D$ presenting a T-singularity is considered and a complete picture of its dynamics is obtained in the following way: \textit{(i)} $Z_0$ has an invariant plane $π_0$ filled up with periodic orbits (this means that the restriction $Z_0 |_{π_0}$ is a center around the singularity), \textit{(ii)} All trajectories of $Z_0$ converge to the surface $π_0$, and such attraction occurs in a very non-usual and amazing way, \textit{(iii)} given an arbitrary integer …
We studied piecewise smooth differential systems of the form $$\dot{z} = Z(z) = \dfrac{1 + \operatorname{sgn}(F)}{2}X(z) + \dfrac{1 - \operatorname{sgn}(F)}{2}Y(z),$$ where $F: \mathbb{R}^{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a smooth map having 0 as a regular value. We consider linear regularizations of the vector field $Z$ given by $$\dot{z}= Z_{\varepsilon}(z) = \dfrac{1 + φ(F/\varepsilon)}{2}X(z) +\dfrac{1 - φ(F /\varepsilon)}{2}Y(z),$$where $φ$ is a transition function (not necessarily monotonic) and nonlinear regularizations of the vector field $Z$ whose transition function is monotonic. It is a…
In this work we consider a two-dimensional piecewise smooth system, defined in two domains separated by the switching manifold $x=0$. We assume that there exists a piecewise-defined continuous Hamiltonian that is a first integral of the system. We also suppose that the system possesses an invisible fold-fold at the origin and two heteroclinic orbits connecting two hyperbolic critical points on either side of $x=0$. Finally, we assume that the region closed by these heteroclinic connections is fully covered by periodic orbits surrounding the origin, whose periods monotonically increase as they …

The already proved Lum-Chua's conjecture says that a continuous planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by a straight line has at most one limit cycle. In this paper, we provide a new proof by using a novel characterization for Poincaré half-maps in planar linear systems. This proof is very short and straightforward, because this characterization avoids the inherent flaws of the usual methods to study piecewise linear systems (the appearance of large case-by-case analysis due to the unnecessary discrimination between the different spectra of the involved matrices, …
We consider a non-autonomous dynamical system formed by coupling two piecewise-smooth systems in $\RR^2$ through a non-autonomous periodic perturbation. We study the dynamics around one of the heteroclinic orbits of one of the piecewise-smooth systems. In the unperturbed case, the system possesses two $C^0$ normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds of dimension two with a couple of three dimensional heteroclinic manifolds between them. These heteroclinic manifolds are foliated by heteroclinic connections between $C^0$ tori located at the same energy levels. By means of the {\em impact map} we pr…
For a fixed initial reference measure, we study the dependence of the escape rate on the hole for a smooth or piecewise smooth hyperbolic map. First, we prove the existence and Holder continuity of the escape rate for systems with small holes admitting Young towers. Then we consider general holes for Anosov diffeomorphisms, without size or Markovian restrictions. We prove bounds on the upper and lower escape rates using the notion of pressure on the survivor set and show that a variational principle holds under generic conditions. However, we also show that the escape rate function forms a dev…
We prove generalizations of the isoperimetric inequality for both spherical and hyperbolic wave fronts (i.e. piecewise smooth curves which may have cusps). We then discuss "bicycle curves" using the generalized isoperimetric inequalities. The euclidean model of a bicycle is a unit segment AB that can move so that it remains tangent to the trajectory of point A (the rear wheel is fixed on the bicycle frame). We extend this definition to a general Riemannian manifold, and concern ourselves in particular with bicycle curves in the hyperbolic plane H^2 and on the sphere S^2. We prove results along…
