We consider piecewise cone hyperbolic systems satisfying a bunching condition and we obtain a bound on the essential spectral radius of the associated weighted transfer operators acting on anisotropic Sobolev spaces. The bunching condition is always satisfied in dimension two, and our results give a unifying treatment of the work of Demers-Liverani and our previous work. When the complexity is subexponential, our bound implies a spectral gap for the transfer operator corresponding to the physical measures in many cases (for example if $T$ preserves volume, or if the stable dimension is equal to 1 and the unstable dimension is not zero).
We introduce a weak transversality condition for piecewise C^{1+α} and piecewise hyperbolic maps which admit a C^{1+α} stable distribution. We show good bounds on the essential spectral radius of the associated transfer operators acting on classical anisotropic Sobolev spaces of Triebel-Lizorkin type. In many cases, we obtain a spectral gap from which we deduce the existence of finitely many physical measures with basin of total measure. The analysis relies on standard techniques (in particular complex interpolation) and applies also to piecewise expanding maps and to Anosov diffeomorphisms, g…
In this paper a model reduction technique is introduced for piecewise-smooth (PWS) vector fields, whose trajectories fall into a Banach space, but the domain of definition of the vector fields is a non-dense subset of the Banach space. The vector fields depend on a parameter that can assume different discrete values in two parts of the phase space and a continuous family of values on the boundary that separates the two parts of the phase space. In essence the parameter parametrizes the possible vector fields on the boundary. The problem is to find one or more values of the parameter so that th…
We consider semiflows in general Banach spaces motivated by monotone cyclic feedback systems or differential equations with integer-valued Lyapunov functionals. These semiflows enjoy strong monotonicity properties with respect to cones of high ranks, which imply order-related structures on the $ω$-limit sets of precompact semi-orbits. We show that for a pseudo-ordered precompact semi-orbit the $ω$-limit set $Ω$ is either ordered, or is contained in the set of equilibria, or possesses a certain ordered homoclinic property. In particular, we show that if $Ω$ contains no equilibrium, then $Ω$ its…
We prove exponential decay of correlations for a realistic model of piecewise hyperbolic flows preserving a contact form, in dimension three. This is the first time exponential decay of correlations is proved for continuous-time dynamics with singularities on a manifold. Our proof combines the second author's version of Dolgopyat's estimates for contact flows and the first author's work with Gouëzel on piecewise hyperbolic discrete-time dynamics. (Presentation revised.)
For linear random dynamical systems in a separable Banach space $X$, we derived a series of Krein-Rutman type Theorems with respect to co-invariant cone family with rank-$k$, which present a (quasi)-equivalence relation between the measurably co-invariant cone family and the measurably dominated splitting of $X$. Moreover, such (quasi)-equivalence relation turns out to be an equivalence relation whenever (i) $k=1$; or (ii) in the frame of the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem with certain Lyapunov exponent being greater than the negative infinity. For the second case, we thoroughly investigated t…
We show how the existence of three objects, $Ω_{\rm trap}$, ${\bf W}$, and $C$, for a continuous piecewise-linear map $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^N$, implies that $f$ has a topological attractor with a positive Lyapunov exponent. First, $Ω_{\rm trap} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is trapping region for $f$. Second, ${\bf W}$ is a finite set of words that encodes the forward orbits of all points in $Ω_{\rm trap}$. Finally, $C \subset T \mathbb{R}^N$ is an invariant expanding cone for derivatives of compositions of $f$ formed by the words in ${\bf W}$. We develop an algorithm that identifies these objects for tw…
Warped cones are metric spaces introduced by John Roe from discrete group actions on compact metric spaces to produce interesting examples in coarse geometry. We show that a certain class of warped cones $\mathcal{O}_Γ(M)$ admit a fibred coarse embedding into a $L_p$-space ($1\leq p<\infty$) if and only if the discrete group $Γ$ admits a proper affine isometric action on a $L_p$-space. This actually holds for any class of Banach spaces stable under taking Lebesgue-Bochner $L_p$-spaces and ultraproducts, e.g., uniformly convex Banach spaces or Banach spaces with nontrivial type. It follows that…
We study transfer operators associated to piecewise monotone interval transformations and show that the essential spectrum is large whenever the Banach space bounds $L^\infty$ and the transformation fails to be Markov. Constructing a family of Banach spaces we show that the lower bound on the essential spectral radius is optimal. Indeed, these Banach spaces realise an essential spectral radius as close as desired to the theoretical best possible case.
I introduce Banach spaces on which it is possible to precisely characterize the spectrum of the transfer operator associated to a piecewise expanding map with Hölder weight.
R. Jin showed that whenever A and B are sets of integers having positive upper Banach density, the sumset A+B is piecewise syndetic. This result was strengthened by Bergelson, Furstenberg, and Weiss to conclude that A+B must be piecewise Bohr. We generalize the latter result to cases where A has Banach density 0, giving a new proof of the previous results in the process.
We study asymptotically compact nonautonomous dynamical systems given by abstract cocycles in Banach spaces. Our main assumptions are given by a squeezing property in a quadratic cone field (given by a family of indefinite quadratic Lyapunov-like functionals) and asymptotic compactness. Under such conditions it is possible to reconstruct foliations as in the theory of normally hyperbolic manifolds. Our approach allows to unify many "practical" theories of local and nonlocal invariant manifolds, such as stable/unstable/center manifolds and inertial manifolds, and, moreover, it often leads to op…
Based on the results about the invariant cones appeared in the literature this paper analyses the existence of periodic orbits in three-dimensional continuous piecewise linear homogeneous systems with two zones, and a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of periodic orbits of such systems is given.
We prove that if a quasi-isometry of warped cones is induced by a map between the base spaces of the cones, the actions must be conjugate by this map. The converse is false in general, conjugacy of actions is not sufficient for quasi-isometry of the respective warped cones. For a general quasi-isometry of warped cones, using the asymptotically faithful covering constructed in a previous work with Jianchao Wu, we deduce that the two groups are quasi-isometric after taking Cartesian products with suitable powers of the integers. Secondly, we characterise geometric properties of a group (coarse e…
For a Banach space $X$, we show that any family of graphs quasi-isometric to levels of a warped cone $\mathcal O_ΓY$ is an expander with respect to $X$ if and only if the induced $Γ$-representation on $L^2(Y;X)$ has a spectral gap. This provides examples of graphs that are an expander with respect to all Banach spaces of non-trivial type.
In an abstract Banach space we study conditions for the existence of piecewise continuous, almost periodic solutions for semi-linear impulsive differential equation with fixed and non-fixed moments of impulsive action
Marchal's lemma is the basic tool for eliminating collisions when using the direct method of the calculus of variations to establish existence of "designer" solutions to the classical N-body problem. Our goal here is to understand why Marchal's lemma holds, by taking a metric geometry perspective and employing the Jacobi-Maupertuis [JM] metric reformulation of mechanics. Using analysis inspired by the conical metric nature of the standard Kepler problem at zero-energy, we are able to manufacture potentials, or "counterexamples", for which Marchal's lemma fails. These counterexamples overlap si…
We introduce a family of Banach spaces of measures, each containing the set of measures with density of bounded variation. These spaces are suitable for the study of weighted transfer operators of piecewise-smooth maps of the interval where the weighting used in the transfer operator is not better than piecewise Hölder continuous and the partition on which the map is continuous may possess a countable number of elements. For such weighted transfer operators we give upper bounds for both the spectral radius and for the essential spectral radius.
We study the dynamics induced by an $m$-linear operator. We answer a question of Bès and Conejero showing an example of an $m$-linear hypercyclic operator acting on a Banach space. Moreover we prove the existence of $m$-linear hypercyclic operators on arbitrary infinite dimensional separable Banach spaces. We also prove an existence result about symmetric bihypercyclic bilinear operators, answering a question by Grosse-Erdman and Kim.
For a class of piecewise hyperbolic maps in two dimensions, we propose a combinatorial definition of topological entropy by counting the maximal, open, connected components of the phase space on which iterates of the map are smooth. We prove that this quantity dominates the measure theoretic entropies of all invariant probability measures of the system, and then construct an invariant measure whose entropy equals the proposed topological entropy. We prove that our measure is the unique measure of maximal entropy, that it is ergodic, gives positive measure to every open set, and has exponential…
Chaotic attractors in the two-dimensional border-collision normal form (a piecewise-linear map) can persist throughout open regions of parameter space. Such robust chaos has been established rigorously in some parameter regimes. Here we provide formal results for robust chaos in the original parameter regime of [S. Banerjee, J.A. Yorke, C. Grebogi, Robust Chaos, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80(14):3049--3052, 1998]. We first construct a trapping region in phase space to prove the existence of a topological attractor. We then construct an invariant expanding cone in tangent space to prove that tangent vect…
Results of a previous paper [Commun. Contemp. Math., 09 (2007) 217-251] on the existence of solutions to a nonlinear evolution equation in an abstract Lebesgue space, arising from kinetic theory, are re-obtained in the more general setting of a real ordered Banach space, with additive norm on the positive cone, which is not necessarily a (Banach) lattice. In addition, an easily correctable technical error in the aforementioned paper is pointed out, and repaired.
In this article, we consider linearly convex complex cones in complex Banach spaces and we define a new projective metric on these cones. Compared to the hyperbolic gauge of Rugh, it has the advantage of being explicit, and easier to estimate. We prove that this metric also satisfies a contraction principle like Birkhoff's theorem for the Hilbert metric. We are thus able to improve existing results on spectral gaps for complex matrices. Finally, we compare the contraction principles for the hyperbolic gauge and our metric on particular cones, including complexification of Birkhoff cones. It ap…
We consider functions $f(v)=\min_{A\in K}{Av}$ and $g(v)=\max_{A\in K}{Av}$, where $K$ is a finite set of nonnegative matrices and by "min" and "max" we mean coordinate-wise minimum and maximum. We transfer known results about properties of $g$ to $f$. In particular we show existence of nonnegative generalized eigenvectors for $f$, give necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of strictly positive eigenvector for $f$, study dynamics of $f$ on the positive cone. We show the existence and construct matrices $A$ and $B$, possibly not in $K$, such that $f^n(v)\sim A^nv$ and $g^n(v)\sim B^…
We prove that every TVS-cone metric space (i.e a cone metric space over a locally convex topological vector space $E$) is first countable paracompact topological space and by using Du's results in " [A note on cone metric fixed point theory and its equivalence, {Nonlinear Analysis},72(5),2259-2261 (2010)]", we conclude that every TVS-cone metric space is topologically isomorphic to a topological metric space. We also show how to construct comparable metric topologies to TVS-cone metric topologies by using the system of seminorms generating the topology of the locally convex topological vector …
We propose a fixed-point property for group actions on cones in topological vector spaces. In the special case of equicontinuous actions, we prove that this property always holds; this statement extends the classical Ryll-Nardzewski theorem for Banach spaces. When restricting to cones that are locally compact in the weak topology, we prove that the property holds for all distal actions, thus extending the general Ryll-Nardzewski theorem for all locally convex spaces. Returning to arbitrary actions, the proposed fixed-point property becomes a group property, considerably stronger than amenabili…
After endowing the space of diagrams of probability spaces with an entropy distance, we study its large-scale geometry by identifying the asymptotic cone as a closed convex cone in a Banach space. We call this cone the tropical cone, and its elements tropical diagrams of probability spaces. Given that the tropical cone has a rich structure, while tropical diagrams are rather flexible objects, we expect the theory of tropical diagrams to be useful for information optimization problems in information theory and artificial intelligence. In a companion article, we give a first application to deriv…
We introduce complex cones and associated projective gauges, generalizing a real Birkhoff cone and its Hilbert metric to complex vector spaces. We deduce a variety of spectral gap theorems in complex Banach spaces. We prove a dominated complex cone-contraction Theorem and use it to extend the classical Perron-Frobenius Theorem to complex matrices, Jentzsch's Theorem to complex integral operators, a Krein-Rutman Theorem to compact and quasi-compact complex operators and a Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius Theorem to complex transfer operators in dynamical systems. In the simplest case of a complex n by n…
We provide the converses to two results of J. Roe (Geom. Topol. 2005): first, the warped cone associated to a free action of an a-T-menable group admits a fibred coarse embedding into a Hilbert space, and second, a free action yielding a warped cone with property A must be amenable. We construct examples showing that in both cases the freeness assumption is necessary. The first equivalence is obtained also for other classes of Banach spaces, in particular for $L^p$-spaces.
In this paper we investigate generalizations of Kazhdan's property $(T)$ to the setting of uniformly convex Banach spaces. We explain the interplay between the existence of spectral gaps and that of Kazhdan projections. Our methods employ Markov operators associated to a random walk on the group, for which we provide new norm estimates and convergence results. They exhibit useful properties and flexibility, and allow to view Kazhdan projections in Banach spaces as natural objects associated to random walks on groups. We give a number of applications of these results. In particular, we address …
