We consider functions $f(v)=\min_{A\in K}{Av}$ and $g(v)=\max_{A\in K}{Av}$, where $K$ is a finite set of nonnegative matrices and by "min" and "max" we mean coordinate-wise minimum and maximum. We transfer known results about properties of $g$ to $f$. In particular we show existence of nonnegative generalized eigenvectors for $f$, give necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of strictly positive eigenvector for $f$, study dynamics of $f$ on the positive cone. We show the existence and construct matrices $A$ and $B$, possibly not in $K$, such that $f^n(v)\sim A^nv$ and $g^n(v)\sim B^nv$ for any strictly positive vector $v$.
In this paper we characterize the slack matrices of cones and polytopes among all nonnegative matrices. This leads to an algorithm for deciding whether a given matrix is a slack matrix. The underlying decision problem is equivalent to the polyhedral verification problem whose complexity is unknown.
We address the issue of establishing standard forms for nonnegative and Metzler matrices by considering their similarity to nonnegative and Metzler Hessenberg matrices. It is shown that for dimensions $n \geq 3$, there always exists a subset of nonnegative matrices that are not similar to a nonnegative Hessenberg form, which in case of $n=3$ also provides a complete characterization of all such matrices. For Metzler matrices, we further establish that they are similar to Metzler Hessenberg matrices if $n \leq 4$. In particular, this provides the first standard form for controllable third order…
This paper describes a new algorithm for computing Nonnegative Low Rank Matrix (NLRM) approximation for nonnegative matrices. Our approach is completely different from classical nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) which has been studied for more than twenty five years. For a given nonnegative matrix, the usual NMF approach is to determine two nonnegative low rank matrices such that the distance between their product and the given nonnegative matrix is as small as possible. However, the proposed NLRM approach is to determine a nonnegative low rank matrix such that the distance between such m…
The main result of the note describes certain optimal-score partitions, which can be interpreted as optimal resource allocations. This result is based on the fact that any nonnegative square matrix whose column sums are the same as the corresponding row sums can be represented as the sum of circuit matrices.
This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 13082 "Communication Complexity, Linear Optimization, and lower bounds for the nonnegative rank of matrices", held in February 2013 at Dagstuhl Castle.
A nonzero nonnegative definite hermitian m by m matrix A has increasing principal minors if the value of each principle minor of A is not less than the value each of its subminors. For $m>1$ we show $A$ has increasing principal minors if and only if $A^{-1}$ exists and its diagonal entries are less or equal to 1.
The problem of minimizing a (nonconvex) quadratic form over the unit simplex, referred to as a standard quadratic program, admits an exact convex conic formulation over the computationally intractable cone of completely positive matrices. Replacing the intractable cone in this formulation by the larger but tractable cone of doubly nonnegative matrices, i.e., the cone of positive semidefinite and componentwise nonnegative matrices, one obtains the so-called doubly nonnegative relaxation, whose optimal value yields a lower bound on that of the original problem. We present a full algebraic charac…
We analyze the global convergence of the power iterates for the computation of a general mixed-subordinate matrix norm. We prove a new global convergence theorem for a class of entrywise nonnegative matrices that generalizes and improves a well-known results for mixed-subordinate $\ell^p$ matrix norms. In particular, exploiting the Birkoff--Hopf contraction ratio of nonnegative matrices, we obtain novel and explicit global convergence guarantees for a range of matrix norms whose computation has been recently proven to be NP-hard in the general case, including the case of mixed-subordinate norm…
We show that the joint spectral radius of a finite collection of nonnegative matrices can be bounded by the eigenvalue of a non-linear operator. This eigenvalue coincides with the ergodic constant of a risk-sensitive control problem, or of an entropy game, in which the state space consists of all switching sequences of a given length. We show that, by increasing this length, we arrive at a convergent approximation scheme to compute the joint spectral radius. The complexity of this method is exponential in the length of the switching sequences, but it is quite insensitive to the size of the mat…
The nonnegative rank of a nonnegative matrix is the minimum number of nonnegative rank-one factors needed to reconstruct it exactly. The problem of determining this rank and computing the corresponding nonnegative factors is difficult; however it has many potential applications, e.g., in data mining, graph theory and computational geometry. In particular, it can be used to characterize the minimal size of any extended reformulation of a given combinatorial optimization program. In this paper, we introduce and study a related quantity, called the restricted nonnegative rank. We show that comput…
Matrix decomposition is ubiquitous and has applications in various fields like speech processing, data mining and image processing to name a few. Under matrix decomposition, nonnegative matrix factorization is used to decompose a nonnegative matrix into a product of two nonnegative matrices which gives some meaningful interpretation of the data. Thus, nonnegative matrix factorization has an edge over the other decomposition techniques. In this paper, we propose two novel iterative algorithms based on Majorization Minimization (MM)-in which we formulate a novel upper bound and minimize it to ge…
We consider a structured estimation problem where an observed matrix is assumed to be generated as an $s$-sparse linear combination of $N$ given $n\times n$ positive-semidefinite matrices. Recovering the unknown $N$-dimensional and $s$-sparse weights from noisy observations is an important problem in various fields of signal processing and also a relevant pre-processing step in covariance estimation. We will present related recovery guarantees and focus on the case of nonnegative weights. The problem is formulated as a convex program and can be solved without further tuning. Such robust, non-B…
The nonnegative rank of a matrix A is the smallest integer r such that A can be written as the sum of r rank-one nonnegative matrices. The nonnegative rank has received a lot of attention recently due to its application in optimization, probability and communication complexity. In this paper we study a class of atomic rank functions defined on a convex cone which generalize several notions of "positive" ranks such as nonnegative rank or cp-rank (for completely positive matrices). The main contribution of the paper is a new method to obtain lower bounds for such ranks which improve on previousl…
Mixtures of $r$ independent distributions for two discrete random variables can be represented by matrices of nonnegative rank $r$. Likelihood inference for the model of such joint distributions leads to problems in real algebraic geometry that are addressed here for the first time. We characterize the set of fixed points of the Expectation-Maximization algorithm, and we study the boundary of the space of matrices with nonnegative rank at most $3$. Both of these sets correspond to algebraic varieties with many irreducible components.

This paper describes a new approach, based on linear programming, for computing nonnegative matrix factorizations (NMFs). The key idea is a data-driven model for the factorization where the most salient features in the data are used to express the remaining features. More precisely, given a data matrix X, the algorithm identifies a matrix C such that X approximately equals CX and some linear constraints. The constraints are chosen to ensure that the matrix C selects features; these features can then be used to find a low-rank NMF of X. A theoretical analysis demonstrates that this approach has…
The multiplicative update (MU) algorithm has been extensively used to estimate the basis and coefficient matrices in nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) problems under a wide range of divergences and regularizers. However, theoretical convergence guarantees have only been derived for a few special divergences without regularization. In this work, we provide a conceptually simple, self-contained, and unified proof for the convergence of the MU algorithm applied on NMF with a wide range of divergences and regularizers. Our main result shows the sequence of iterates (i.e., pairs of basis and c…
