We investigate the properties of chain recurrent, chain transitive, and chain mixing maps (generalizations of the well-known notions of non-wandering, topologically transitive, and topologically mixing maps). We describe the structure of chain transitive maps. These notions of recurrence are defined using $\ep$-chains, and the minimal lengths of these $\ep$-chains give a way to measure recurrence time (chain recurrence and chain mixing times). We give upper and lower bounds for these recurrence times and relate the chain mixing time to topological entropy.
In this paper we study topological entropy and recurrence properties of non-autonomous dynamical system generated by a family of continuous self maps on a compact space X. Specially, we introduce the pseudo-entropy and periodic-pseudo-entropy and prove their equivalence with the topological entropy for non-autonomous dynamical systems.
We study Poincaré recurrence from a purely geometrical viewpoint. We prove that the metric entropy is given by the exponential growth rate of return times to dynamical balls. This is the geometrical counterpart of Ornstein-Weiss theorem. Moreover, we show that minimal return times to dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Finally, some interesting relations between recurrence, dimension, entropy and Lyapunov exponents of ergodic measures are given.
This short expository note provides an introduction to the concept of chain recurrence in topological dynamics and a proof of the existence complete Lyapunov functions for homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces due to Charles Conley. I have used it as supplementary material in introductory dynamics courses.
Misiurewicz[19]introducedtheconceptofpseudo-entropyandproved this quantity coincides with topological entropy. Richeson et al. [21] obtained the lower bounded of topological entropy by means of the definition of pseudo-entropy. This paper aims to generalize the main results obtained by Misiurewicz and Rich-eson et al. to free semigroup actions. Firstly, the pseudo-entropy is introduced for free semigroup actions, and it is shown that the pseudo-entropy coincides with the topological entropy defined by Bufetov [9]. Secondly, these concepts of the chain recurrence, the chain mixing, the chain re…
This paper examines a continuous time dynamical system that is an extension of a discrete time dynamical system previously examined, and considers this system together in a product space with a compact subset of Euclidean space. Together, the two systems give a skew product flow. We first examine limit behavior and recurrence in our continuous time extension. We then consider analogous limit and recurrence concepts for a skew product flow, and the behavior on the Euclidean space that results.
We shall address the alternative definition of chain recurrent set for the action of a semigroup of continuous self maps, given by M. Hurley \cite {mh} in noncompact space. Following this, we shall address the characterization of chain recurrence in terms of attractors given by C. Conley in \cite {conley}.
We study shadowing and chain recurrence in the context of linear operators acting on Banach spaces or even on normed vector spaces. We show that for linear operators there is only one chain recurrent set, and this set is actually a closed invariant subspace. We prove that every chain transitive linear dynamical system with the shadowing property is frequently hypercyclic, and as a corollary obtain that every shadowing hypercyclic linear dynamical system is frequently hypercyclic.
In \cite {kl1}, we extended various notions of recurrence for the generalized semigroup analogous to their counterpart in the classical theory of dynamics. In this paper, we shall address the alternative definition of chain recurrent set in terms of attractors, given by Hurley in \cite {mh} following Conley\rq{}s characterization in \cite {conley}. We shall also discuss the notion of topological transitivity and chain transitivity in this general setting.
This paper is devoted to problems stated by Z. Zhou and F. Li in 2009. They concern relations between almost periodic, weakly almost periodic, and quasi-weakly almost periodic points of a continuous map f and its topological entropy. The negative answer follows by our recent paper. But for continuous maps of the interval and other more general one-dimensional spaces we give more results; in some cases, the answer is positive.
The chain relation, due to Conley, and the strong chain relation, due to Easton, are well studied for continuous maps on compact metric spaces. Following Fathi and Pageault, we use barrier functions to generalize the theory to general relations on uniform spaces. In developing the theory, we indicate why the chain ideas are naturally uniform spaces concepts. We illustrate that the extension to relations is easy and is useful even for the study of the continuous map case.
Fathi and Pageault have recently shown a connection between Auslander's generalized recurrent set $GR(f)$ and Easton's strong chain recurrent set. We study $GR(f)$ by examining that connection in more detail, as well as connections with other notions of recurrence. We give equivalent definitions that do not refer to a metric. In particular, we show that $GR(f^k)=GR(f)$ for any $k>0$, and give a characterization of maps for which the generalized recurrent set is different from the ordinary chain recurrent set.
The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we discuss the notions of strong chain recurrence and strong chain transitivity for flows on metric spaces, together with their characterizations in terms of rigidity properties of Lipschitz Lyapunov functions. This part extends to flows some recent results for homeomorphisms of Fathi and Pageault. On the other hand, we use these characterisations to revisit the proof of a theorem of Paternain, Polterovich and Siburg concerning the inner rigidity of a Lagrangian submanifold $Λ$ contained in an optical hypersurface of a cotangent bundle, under …
Let $f : M \rightarrow M$ be a Morse-Smale diffeomorphism defined on a compact and connected manifold without boundary. Let $C(M)$ denote the hyperspace of all subcontinua of M endowed with the Hausdorff metric and $C(f) : C(M) \rightarrow C(M)$ denote the induced homeomorphism of $f$. We show in this paper that if $M$ is the unit circle $S^1$ then the induced map $C(f)$ has not the shadowing property. Also we show that the topological entropy of $C(f)$ has only two possible values: $0$ or $\infty$. In particular, we show that the entropy of $C(f)$ is $0$ when $M$ is the unit circle $S^1$ and …
We consider the space of $C^1$-diffeomorphims equipped with the $C^1$-topology on a three dimensional closed manifold. It is known that there are open sets in which $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms display uncountably many chain recurrences classes, while only countably many of them may contain periodic orbits. The classes without periodic orbits, called aperiodic classes, are the main subject of this paper. The aim of the paper is to show that aperiodic classes of $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms can exhibit a variety of topological properties. More specifically, there are $C^1$-generic diffeomorph…
One main task of smooth dynamical systems consists in finding a good decomposition into elementary pieces of the dynamics. This paper contributes to the study of chain-recurrence classes. It is known that $C^1$-generically, each chain-recurrence class containing a periodic orbit is equal to the homoclinic class of this orbit. Our result implies that in general this property is fragile. We build a C1-open set U of tame diffeomorphisms (their dynamics only splits into finitely many chain-recurrence classes) such that for any diffeomorphism in a C-infinity-dense subset of U, one of the chain-recu…
Motivated by entropy estimation from chaotic time series, we provide a comprehensive analysis of hitting times of cylinder sets in the setting of Gibbsian sources. We prove two strong approximation results from which we easily deduce pointwise convergence to entropy, lognormal fluctuations, precise large deviation estimates and an explicit formula for the hitting-time multifractal spectrum. It follows from our analysis that the hitting time of a $n$-cylinder fluctuates in the same way as the inverse measure of this $n$-cylinder at "small scales", but in a different way at "large scales". In pa…
We prove that the minimal chain recurrence classes of a holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb P^k$ have finitely many connected components. We also obtain results on arbitrary classes. These strong constraints on the topological dynamics in the phase space are all deduced from the associated action on a space of currents.
The topological entropy of various gap-sets on periodic-like recurrence and Birkhoff regularity were considered in [69] but some Banach recurrence and Lyapunov regularity are not considered. In this paper we introduce five new levels on Banach recurrence and show they all carry full topological entropy, and simultaneously combine with Lyapunov regularity to get some refined theory on mixed multifractal analysis of [8,29]. In this process, we strengthen Pfister and Sullivan's result of [58] from saturated property to transitively-saturated property (and from single-saturated property to transit…
For continuous maps of compact metric spaces $f:X\to X$ and $g:Y\to Y$ and for various notions of topological recurrence, we study the relationship between recurrence for $f$ and $g$ and recurrence for the product map $f\times g:X\times Y \to X\times Y$. For the generalized recurrent set $GR$, we see that $GR(f\times g)=GR(f)\times GR(g)$. For the nonwandering set $NW$, we see that $NW(f\times g)\subset NW(f)\times NW(g)$ and give necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ for equality for every $g$. We also consider product recurrence for the chain recurrent set, the strong chain recurrent se…
Results of Wyner and Ziv and of Ornstein and Weiss show that if one observes the first k outputs of a finite-valued ergodic process, then the waiting time until this block appears again is almost surely asymptotic to $2^{hk}$, where $h$ is the entropy of the process. We examine this phenomenon when the allowed return times are restricted to some subset of times, and generalize the results to processes parameterized by other discrete amenable groups. We also obtain a uniform density version of the waiting time results: For a process on $s$ symbols, within a given realization, the density of the…
We consider the family $f_{a,b}(x,y)=(y,(y+a)/(x+b))$ of birational maps of the plane and the parameter values $(a,b)$ for which $f_{a,b}$ gives an automorphism of a rational surface. In particular, we find values for which $f_{a,b}$ is an automorphism of positive entropy but no invariant curve. The Main Theorem: If $f_{a,b}$ is an automorphism with an invariant curve and positive entropy, then either (1) $(a,b)$ is real, and the restriction of $f$ to the real points has maximal entropy, or (2) $f_{a,b}$ has a rotation (Siegel) domain.
Let $M$ be a manifold with a volume form $ω$ and $f : M \to M$ be a diffeomorphism of class $\mathcal{C}^1$ that preserves $ω$. In this paper, we do \textit{not} assume $f$ is $\mathcal{C}^1$-generic. We have two main themes in the paper: (1) the chain recurrence; (2) relations among recurrence points, homoclinic points, shadowability and hyperbolicity. For (1) (without assuming $M$ is compact), we have the theorem: if $f$ is Lagrange stable, then $M$ is a chain recurrent set. If $M$ is compact, then the Lagrange-stability is automatic. For (2) (assuming the compactness of $M$), we prove some …
Using ideas borrowed from topological dynamics and ergodic theory we introduce topological and metric versions of the recurrence property for general Markov chains. The main question of interest here is how large is the set of recurrent points. We show that under some mild technical assumptions the set of non recurrent points is of zero reference measure. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a reference measure $m$ (which needs not to be dynamically invariant) to satisfy this property are obtained. These results are new even in the purely deterministic setting.
There are lots of results to study dynamical complexity on irregular sets and level sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (and topological pressure) etc.. However, it is unknown from the viewpoint of chaos. There are lots of results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and various chaos but it is known that positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos called DC1 so that it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. In t…
Recurrence determinism, one of the fundamental characteristics of recurrence quantification analysis, measures predictability of a trajectory of a dynamical system. It is tightly connected with the conditional probability that, given a recurrence, following states of the trajectory will be recurrences. In this paper we study recurrence determinism of interval dynamical systems. We show that recurrence determinism distinguishes three main types of $ω$-limit sets of zero entropy maps: finite, solenoidal without non-separable points, and solenoidal with non-separable points. As a corollary we obt…
We show that a non-wandering dynamical system with the shadowing property is either equicontinuous or has positive entropy and that in this context uniformly positive entropy is equivalent to weak mixing. We also show that weak mixing together with the shadowing property imply the specification property with a special kind of regularity in tracing (a weaker version of periodic specification property). This in turn implies that the set of ergodic measures supported on the closures of orbits of regularly recurrent points is dense in the space of all invariant measures (in particular, invariant m…
We study the recurrence to mistake dynamical balls, that is, dynamical balls that admit some errors and whose proportion of errors decrease tends to zero with the length of the dynamical ball. We prove, under mild assumptions, that the measure-theoretic entropy coincides with the exponential growth rate of return times to mistake dynamical balls and that minimal return times to mistake dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Moreover we obtain averaged recurrence formula for subshifts of finite type and suspension semiflows. Applications include $β$-transformations, Axiom A fl…
In the context of geodesic flows of noncompact negatively curved manifolds, we propose three different definitions of entropy and pressure at infinity, through growth of periodic orbits, critical exponents of Poincaré series, and entropy (pressure) of invariant measures. We show that these notions coincide. Thanks to these entropy and pressure at infinity, we investigate thoroughly the notion of strong positive recurrence in this geometric context. A potential is said strongly positively recurrent when its pressure at infinity is strictly smaller than the full topological pressure. We show in …
We prove that a homeomorphism of the torus homotopic to the identity whose rotation set is reduced to a single totally irrational vector is chain-recurrent. In fact, we show that pseudo-orbits can be chosen with a small number of jumps, in particular, that the nonwandering set is weakly transitive. We give an example showing that the nonwandering set of such a homeomorphism may not be transitive.
In [arXiv:1904.12333], we introduced the concept of escaping set in general setting for a topological space and extended the notion of limit set and escaping set for the general semigroup generated by continuous self maps. In this paper we continue with extending the other notions of recurrence for the generalized semigroup analogs to their counterpart in the classical theory of dynamics. We discuss the concept of periodic point, nonwandering point and chain recurrent point in the more general setting of a semigroup and establish the correlation between them.
In this note we construct measures of maximal entropy for a certain class of maps with critical points called Viana maps. The main ingredients of the proof are the non-uniform expansion features and the slow recurrence (to the critical set) of generic points with respect to the natural candidates for attaining the topological entropy.
This paper considers the egodicity properties in iterated function systems. First, we will introduce chain mixing and chain transitive iterated function systems then some results and examples are presented to compare with these notions in discrete dynamical systems. As our main result, using adding machine maps and topological conjugacy we show that chain mixing, chain transitive and chain recurrence properties in iterated function systems are equivalent.
We consider the set of all 2-step recurrences (difference equations) that are given by linear fractional maps. These give birational maps of the plane. We determine the degree growth of these birational maps. We find the all the maps in this family that are periodic. This also leads to new surface automorphisms with positive entropy.
We show that a zero-dimensional chain transitive dynamical system can be embedded into a densely uniformly chaotic system, with dense uniformly chaotic set $K$. We concretely construct a Mycielski set $K$ that is also invariant. Furthermore, every point in $K$ is positively and negatively transitive. The uniform proximality and recurrence of $K$ are also bidirectional.
We show that, for every positive real number h and every positive integer p, there exist oriented graphs G, G' (with countably many vertices) that are strongly connected, of period p, of Gurevich entropy h, such that G is positive recurrent (thus the topological Markov chain on G admits a measure of maximal entropy) and G' is transient (thus the topological Markov chain on G' admits no measure of maximal entropy).
We study decay of correlations, the asymptotic distribution of hitting times and fluctuations of the return times for a robust class of multidimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic transformations. Oliveira and Viana [15] proved that there is a unique equilibrium state for a large class of non- uniformly expanding transformations and Holder continuous potentials with small variation. For an open class of potentials with small variation, we prove quasi-compactness of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator in a space $V_θ$ of functions with essential bounded variation that strictly contain Holder con…
Magyar has shown that if $B \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ has positive upper density $(d \geq 5)$, then the set of squared distances $\{ \|b_1-b_2 \|^2 \text{ }: \text{ } b_1,b_2 \in B \}$ contains an infinitely long arithmetic progression, whose period depends only on the upper density of $B$. We extend this result by showing that $B$ contains locally isometrically embedded copies of every tree with edge lengths in some given arithmetic progression (whose period depends only on the upper density of $B$ and the number of vertices of the sought tree). In particular, $B$ contains all chains of elements …
Under a map T, a point x recurs at rate given by a sequence {r_n} near a point x_0 if d(T^n(x),x_0)< r_n infinitely often. Let us fix x_0, and consider the set of those x's. In this paper, we study the size of this set for expanding maps and obtain its measure and sharp lower bounds on its dimension involving the entropy of T, the local dimension near x_0 and the upper limit of 1/n log 1/r_n. We apply our results in several concrete examples including subshifts of finite type, Gauss transformation and inner functions.
We study the iterative behavior of the family of 3-step linear fractional recurrences and the family of birational maps they define. We determine all the possible periodicities within this family or, equivalently, the birational maps of finite order. This family also contains pseudo-automorphisms of infinite order. One such family consists of completely integrable maps, and another family consists of maps of positive entropy. Both of these families have invariant families of $K3$ surfaces.
