We consider the family $f_{a,b}(x,y)=(y,(y+a)/(x+b))$ of birational maps of the plane and the parameter values $(a,b)$ for which $f_{a,b}$ gives an automorphism of a rational surface. In particular, we find values for which $f_{a,b}$ is an automorphism of positive entropy but no invariant curve. The Main Theorem: If $f_{a,b}$ is an automorphism with an invariant curve and positive entropy, then either (1) $(a,b)$ is real, and the restriction of $f$ to the real points has maximal entropy, or (2) $f_{a,b}$ has a rotation (Siegel) domain.
In this article, we consider hyperbolic rational maps restricted on thier Julia sets and study about the recurrence rate of typical orbits in arbitrarily small neighbourhoods around them and their relationship to the Hausdorff dimension of such small neighbourhoods.
We discuss multiple versions of rational ergodicity and rational weak mixing for "nice" transformations, including Markov shifts, certain interval maps and hyperbolic geodesic flows. These properties entail multiple recurrence.
We compare real and complex dynamics for automorphisms of rational surfaces that are obtained by lifting \chg{some} quadratic birational maps of the plane. In particular, we show how to exploit the existence of an invariant cubic curve to understand how the real part of an automorphism acts on homology. We apply this understanding to give examples where the entropy of the full (complex) automorphism is the same as its real restriction. Conversely and by different methods, we exhibit different examples where the entropy is strictly decreased by restricting to the real part of the surface. Final…
This article discusses a method to compute the induced action on the fundamental group of a real rational surface and provides the induced actions for basic quadratic real automorphisms. Using an invariant set in the fundamental group, we introduce a method to estimate a lower bound of the action's growth rate on the fundamental group. The growth rate of this induced action gives a lower bound for the entropy of real surface automorphism.
We present two tools, which could be useful in determining whether or not a non-Homogenous Linear Recurrence can reach a desired rational. First, we derive the determinant that is equal to the ith term in a non-Homogenous Linear Recurrence. We use this to derive the infinite determinant that is zero, if and only if, the desired rational can be reached by some term in the recurrence. Second, we derive an infinite summation of rational Polynomials, such that this summation can be equal to 1, if and only if, the desired rational can be reached by some term in the recurrence.
We compute an explicit representation of the (topological) automorphism group or a particular Toeplitz subshift. The automorphism group is a (non-finitely generated) subgroup of rational numbers under addition and the shift map corresponds to the rational number 1. The group is the additive subgroup of the rational numbers generated by the powers of 5/2.
We show the existence of a rational surface automorphism of positive entropy with a given number of Siegel disks. Moreover, among automorphisms obtained from quadratic birational maps on the projective plane fixing irreducible cubic curves, we find out an automorphism of positive entropy with multiple Siegel disks.
The aim of this paper is to construct many examples of rational surface automorphisms with positive entropy by means of the concept of orbit data. We show that if an orbit data satisfies some mild conditions, then there exists an automorphism realizing the orbit data. Applying this result, we describe the set of entropy values of the rational surface automorphisms in terms of Weyl groups.
A set $R\subset \mathbb{N}$ is called rational if it is well-approximable by finite unions of arithmetic progressions. Examples of rational sets include many classical sets of number-theoretical origin such as the set of squarefree numbers, the set of abundant numbers, or sets of the form $Φ_x:=\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \frac{\boldsymbolφ(n)}{n}<x\}$, where $x\in[0,1]$ and $\boldsymbolφ$ is Euler's totient function. We investigate the combinatorial and dynamical properties of rational sets and obtain new results in ergodic Ramsey theory. We show that if $R$ is a rational set with $\overline{d}(R)>0$, …
We face the problem of characterizing the periodic cases in parametric families of (real or complex) rational diffeomorphisms having a fixed point. Our approach relies on the Normal Form Theory, to obtain necessary conditions for the existence of a formal linearization of the map, and on the introduction of a suitable rational parametrization of the parameters of the family. Using these tools we can find a finite set of values p for which the map can be p-periodic, reducing the problem of finding the parameters for which the periodic cases appear to simple computations. We apply our results to…
A complex compact surface which carries an automorphism of positive topological entropy has been proved by Cantat to be either a torus, a K3 surface, an Enriques surface or a rational surface. Automorphisms of rational surfaces are quite mysterious and have been recently the object of intensive studies. In this paper, we construct several new examples of automorphisms of rational surfaces with positive topological entropy. We also explain how to define and to count parameters in families of birational maps of the complex projective plane and in families of rational surfaces.
If $X$ is a rational surface without nonzero holomorphic vector field and $f$ is an automorphism of $X$, we study in several examples the Zariski tangent space of the local deformation space of the pair $(X, f)$.
We introduce the notion of a rational dynamical system extending the classical notion of a topological dynamical system and we prove (multiple) recurrence results for such systems via a partition theorem for the rational numbers proved by Farmaki and the author. In particular, we extend classical recurrence results developed by Furstenberg and Weiss. Also, we give some applications of these topological recurrence results to topology, to combinatorics, to diophantine approximations and to number theory.
In this paper, we consider a one-parameter family of degree $d\ge 2$ rational maps with an automorphism group containing the cyclic group of order $d$. We construct a polynomial whose roots correspond to parameter values for which the corresponding map is post-critically finite with a certain dynamical portrait. Then we prove that the polynomial is irreducible in certain cases.
The polynomial automorphisms of the affine plane have been studied a lot: if $f$ is such an automorphism, then either $f$ preserves a rational fibration, has an uncountable centralizer and its first dynamical degree equals $1$, or $f$ preserves no rational curves, has a countable centralizer and its first dynamical degree is $>1$. In higher dimensions there is no such description. In this article we study a family $(Ψ_α)_α$ of polynomial automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^3$. We show that the first dynamical degree of $Ψ_α$ is $>1$, that $Ψ_α$ preserves a unique rational fibration and has an uncount…
This paper continues discussions in the author's previous paper about the Misiurewicz polynomials defined for a family of degree $d \ge 2$ rational maps with an automorphism group containing the cyclic group of order $d$. In particular, we extend the sufficient conditions that the Misiurewicz polynomials are irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$. We also prove that the Misiurewicz polynomials always have an irreducible factor of large degree.
In this note, we prove that every automorphism of a rational manifold which is obtained from $\Bbb{P}^k$ by a finite sequence blow-ups along smooth centers of dimension at most r with k>2r+2 has zero topological entropy.
We consider the set of all 2-step recurrences (difference equations) that are given by linear fractional maps. These give birational maps of the plane. We determine the degree growth of these birational maps. We find the all the maps in this family that are periodic. This also leads to new surface automorphisms with positive entropy.
We consider rational surface automorphisms with positive entropy. A Fatou component is said to be a rotation domain if the automorphism induces a torus action on it. Here we construct a rational surface automorphism with positive entropy with the following property: it has a rotation domain which contains both a curve of fixed points and isolated fixed points. This Fatou component cannot be imbedded into complex euclidean space, so we introduce a global linear model space and show that it can be globally linearized in this model.
We classify rational surfaces for which the image of the automorphisms group in the group of linear transformations of the Picard group is the largest possible. This answers a question raised by Arthur Coble in 1928, and can be rephrased in terms of periodic orbits of a birational action of an infinite Coxeter group on ordered point sets in the projective plane modulo projective equivalence. We also outline the classification of non-rational surfaces with large automorphism groups.
We present the first explicit examples of a rational threefold and a Calabi-Yau threefold, admitting biregular automorphisms of positive entropy not preserving any dominant rational maps to lower positive dimensional varieties. The most crucial part is the rationality of the quotient threefold of a 3-dimensional torus of product type.

Consider the celebrated Lyness recurrence $x_{n+2}=(a+x_{n+1})/x_{n}$ with $a\in\Q$. First we prove that there exist initial conditions and values of $a$ for which it generates periodic sequences of rational numbers with prime periods $1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10$ or $12$ and that these are the only periods that rational sequences $\{x_n\}_n$ can have. It is known that if we restrict our attention to positive rational values of $a$ and positive rational initial conditions the only possible periods are $1,5$ and $9$. Moreover 1-periodic and 5-periodic sequences are easily obtained. We prove that for inf…
We study periodic wind-tree models, unbounded planar billiards with periodically located rectangular obstacles. For a class of rational parameters we show the existence of completely periodic directions, and recurrence; for another class of rational parameters, there are directions in which all trajectories escape, and we prove a rate of escape for almost all directions. These results extend to a dense $G_δ$ of parameters.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ and $\mathcal{M}_d$ the moduli space of rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of degree $d$ over $k$. This paper describes the automorphism loci $A\subset \mathrm{Rat}_d$ and $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{M}_d$ and the singular locus $\mathcal{S}\subset\mathcal{M}_d$. In particular, we determine which groups occur as subgroups of the automorphism group of some $[ϕ]\in\mathcal{M}_d$ for a given $d$ and calculate the dimension of the locus. Next, we prove an analogous theorem to the Rauch-Popp-Oort characterization of singular points on the…
The moduli space ${\rm M}_{d}$, of complex rational maps of degree $d \geq 2$, is a connected complex orbifold which carries a natural real structure, coming from usual complex conjugation. Its real points are the classes of rational maps admitting antiholomorphic automorphisms. The locus of the real points ${\rm M}_{d}({\mathbb R})$ decomposes as a disjoint union of the loci ${\rm M}_{d}^{\mathbb R}$, consisting of the real rational maps, and ${\mathcal P}_{d}$, consisting of the pseudo-real ones. We obtain that, both ${\rm M}_{d}^{\mathbb R}$ and ${\rm M}_{d}({\mathbb R})$, are connected and…
Let phi and psi be endomorphisms of the projective line of degree at least 2, defined over a noetherian commutative ring R with unity. From a dynamical perspective, a significant question is to determine whether phi and psi are conjugate (or to answer the related question of whether a given map phi has a nontrivial automorphism). We show that the space of automorphisms of P^1 conjugating phi to psi is a finite subscheme of PGL(2) (respectively that the automorphism group of phi is a finite group scheme). We construct efficient algorithms for computing the set of conjugating maps (resp. the gro…
We show that, in any dimension greater than one, there are an abelian variety, a smooth rational variety and a Calabi-Yau manifold, with primitive birational automorphisms of first dynamical degree $>1$. We also show that there are smooth complex projective Calabi-Yau manifolds and smooth rational manifolds, of any even dimension, with primitive biregular automorphisms of positive topological entropy.
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. In this paper we classify the $\text{PGL}_3(K)$-conjugacy classes of semi-stable dominant degree $2$ rational maps $f:{\mathbb P}^2_K\dashrightarrow{\mathbb P}^2_K$ whose automorphism group $$\text{Aut}(f):=\{ϕ\in\text{PGL}_3(K): ϕ^{-1}\circ f\circϕ=f\}$$ is finite and of order at least $3$. In particular, we prove that $\#\text{Aut}(f)\le24$ in general, that $\#\text{Aut}(f)\le21$ for morphisms, and that $\#\text{Aut}(f)\le6$ for all but finitely many conjugacy classes of $f$.
We study the iterative behavior of the family of 3-step linear fractional recurrences and the family of birational maps they define. We determine all the possible periodicities within this family or, equivalently, the birational maps of finite order. This family also contains pseudo-automorphisms of infinite order. One such family consists of completely integrable maps, and another family consists of maps of positive entropy. Both of these families have invariant families of $K3$ surfaces.
In the present paper we study stability of recurrence equations (which in particular case contain a dynamics of rational functions) generated by contractive functions defined on an arbitrary non-Archimedean algebra. Moreover, multirecurrence equations are considered. We also investigate reverse recurrence equations which have application in the study of $p$-adic Gibbs measures. Note that our results also provide the existence of unique solutions of nonlinear functional equations as well.
We construct some positive entropy automorphisms of rational surfaces with no periodic curves. The surfaces in question, which we term tri-Coble surfaces, are blow-ups of the projective plane at 12 points which have contractions down to three different Coble surfaces. The automorphisms arise as compositions of lifts of Bertini involutions from certain degree 1 weak del Pezzo surfaces.
