We construct some positive entropy automorphisms of rational surfaces with no periodic curves. The surfaces in question, which we term tri-Coble surfaces, are blow-ups of the projective plane at 12 points which have contractions down to three different Coble surfaces. The automorphisms arise as compositions of lifts of Bertini involutions from certain degree 1 weak del Pezzo surfaces.
We classify Coble surfaces with finite automorphism group in arbitrary characteristic not equal to 2. There are exactly 9 isomorphism classes of such surfaces.
We study Coble surfaces in characteristic 2, in particular, singularities of their canonical coverings. As an application we classify Coble surfaces with finite automorphism group in characteristic 2. There are exactly 9 types of such surfaces.
Consider a cubic surface satisfying the mild condition that it may be described in Sylvester's pentahedral form. There is a well-known Enriques or Coble surface S with K3 cover birationally isomorphic to the Hessian surface of this cubic surface. We describe the nef cone and the (-2)-curves of S. In the case of pentahedral parameters (1, 1, 1, 1, nonzero t) we compute the automorphism group of S. For t not 1 it is the semidirect product of the free product (Z/2)*(Z/2)*(Z/2)*(Z/2) by the symmetric group S4. In the special case t=1/16 we study the action of Aut(S) on an invariant smooth rational…
A smooth rational surface X is a Coble surface if the anti-canonical linear system is empty while the anti-bicanonical linear system is non-empty. In this note we shall classify these X and consider the finiteness problem of the number of negative curves on X modulo automorphisms.
Three-dimensional del Pezzo varieties of degree 2 are double covers of projective space $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ branced in a quadric. In this paper we prove that if a del Pezzo variety of degree 2 has exactly 15 nodes then the corresponding quadric is a hyperplane section of the Igusa quartic or, equivalently, all such del Pezzo varieties are members of one particular linear system on the Coble fourfold. Their automorphism groups are induced from the automorphism group of Coble fourfold. Also we classify all $G$-birationally rigid varieties of such type.
We classify rational surfaces for which the image of the automorphisms group in the group of linear transformations of the Picard group is the largest possible. This answers a question raised by Arthur Coble in 1928, and can be rephrased in terms of periodic orbits of a birational action of an infinite Coxeter group on ordered point sets in the projective plane modulo projective equivalence. We also outline the classification of non-rational surfaces with large automorphism groups.
It follows from an observation of A. Coble in 1919 that the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface contains the $2$-congruence subgroup of the Weyl group of the $E_{10}$-lattice. In this article, we determine how much bigger the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface can be. Furthermore, we show that the automorphism group is in fact equal to the $2$-congruence subgroup for generic Enriques surfaces in arbitrary characteristic (under the additional assumption that the Enriques surface is ordinary if the characteristic is $2$), improving the corresponding result of W. Bart…
The Coble cubics were discovered more than a century ago in connection with genus two Riemann surfaces and theta functions. They have attracted renewed interest ever since. Recently, they were reinterpreted in terms of alternating trivectors in nine variables. Exploring this relation further, we show how the Hilbert scheme of pairs of points on an abelian surface, and also its Kummer fourfold, a very remarkable hyper-Kähler manifold, can very naturally be constructed in this context. Moreover, we explain how this perspective allows us to describe the group law of an abelian surface, in a strik…
We give conceptual proofs of some results on the automorphism group of an Enriques surface X, for which only computational proofs have been available. Namely, there is an obvious upper bound on the image of Aut(X) in the isometry group of X's numerical lattice, and we establish a lower bound for the image that is quite close to this upper bound. These results apply over any algebraically closed field, provided that X lacks nodal curves, or that all its nodal curves are (numerically) congruent to each other mod 2. In this generality these results were originally proven by Looijenga and Cossec-D…
We show that a compact Kaehler manifold X is a complex torus if both the continuous part and discrete part of some automorphism group G of X are infinite groups, unless X is bimeromorphic to a non-trivial G-equivariant fibration. Some applications to dynamics are given.
In this paper, we investigate automorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds with different levels of topological triviality. In particular, we provide several examples of smooth complex projective surfaces X whose groups of $C^\infty$-isotopically trivial automorphisms, resp. cohomologically trivial automorphisms, have a number of connected components which can be arbitrarily large.
In this note we prove that every finite collection of connected algebraic subgroups of the group of triangular automorphisms of the affine space generates a connected solvable algebraic subgroup.
We extend to arbitrary characteristic some known results about automorphisms of complex Enriques surfaces that act trivially on the cohomology or the cohomology modulo torsion.
We treat non-symplectic automorphisms on $K3$ surfaces which act trivially on the Néron-Severi lattice. In this paper, we classify non-symplectic automorphisms of prime-power order, especially 2-power order on $K3$ surfaces, i.e., we describe their fixed locus.

We study the groups of automorphisms of rational algebraic surfaces that admit a relatively minimal pencil of curves of arithmetic genus one over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. In particular, we classify such surfaces that admit non-trivial automorphisms that act trivially on the Picard group. As an application, we classify classical Enriques surfaces in characteristic $2$ that admit non-trivial numerically trivial automorphisms.
In this article, we prove that any complex smooth rational surface $X$ which has no automorphism of positive entropy has a finite number of real forms (this is especially the case if $X$ cannot be obtained by blowing up $\mathbb P^2_{\mathbb C}$ at $r\geq 10$ points). In particular, we prove that the group $\mathrm{Aut}^{\#}X$ of complex automorphisms of $X$ which act trivially on the Picard group of $X$ is a linear algebraic group defined over $\mathbb R$.
An automorphism of an algebraic surface $S$ is called cohomologically (numerically) trivial if it acts identically on the second $l$-adic cohomology group (this group modulo torsion subgroup). Extending the results of S. Mukai and Y. Namikawa to arbitrary characteristic $p > 0$, we prove that the group of cohomologically trivial automorphisms $\rm{Aut}_{\rm{ct}}(S)$ of an Enriques surface $S$ is of order $\leq 2$ if $S$ is not supersingular. If $p = 2$ and $S$ is supersingular, we show that $\rm{Aut}_{\rm{ct}}(S)$ is a cyclic group of odd order $n\in \{1,2,3,5,7,11\}$ or the quaternion group $…
Let S be a complex minimal surface of general type with irregularity q(S)=1 and Aut_0(S) the subgroup of automorphisms acting trivially on the cohomology ring with rational coefficients. In this paper we show that |Aut_0(S)|<=4, and if the equality holds then $S$ is a surface isogenous to a product of unmixed type. Moreover, examples of surfaces with |Aut_0(S)|=4 and all possible values of the geometric genus are provided.
A compact complex manifold X is said to be rationally cohomologically rigidified if its automorphism group Aut(X) acts faithfully on the cohomology ring H*(X,Q). In this note, we prove that, surfaces of general type with irregularity q>2 are rationally cohomologically rigidified, and so are minimal surfaces S with q=2 unless K^2=8X. This answers a question of Fabrizio Catanese in part. As examples we give a complete classification of surfaces isogenous to a product with q=2 that are not rationally cohomologically rigidified. These surfaces turn out however to be rigidified.
In the paper, we first study the subgroup of $ K$-automorphisms of $K[x_1,\allowbreak \ldots,x_n]$ which commutes with a simple derivation of $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. We show that the subgroup of $ K$-automorphisms of $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ which commutes with a simple derivation of $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ consists of translations under certain hypothesis. We also prove that the subgroup of $K$-automorphisms of $K[x_1,x_2]$ which commutes with a simple derivation is trivial under the same hypothesis, and the subgroup of $ K$-automorphisms of $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ which commutes with simple Shamsuddin deriv…
In this paper, we study relations between automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds and Kuznetsov components. Firstly, we characterize automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds as subgroups of autoequivalence groups of Kuznetsov components using Bridgeland stability conditions. Secondly, we compare automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds with automorphism groups of their associated K3 surfaces. Thirdly, we note that the existence of a non-trivial symplectic automorphism on a cubic fourfold is related to the existence of associated K3 surfaces.
A few facts concerning the phrase "the automorphism groups become larger at special points of the moduli of K3 surfaces" are presented. It is also shown that the automorphism groups are of infinite order over a dense subset in any one-dimensional non-trivial family of projective K3 surfaces.
In this paper, we study non-symplectic automorphisms of order 3 on algebraic $K3$ surface over $\mathbb{C}$ which act trivially on the Néron-Severi lattice. In particular we shall characterize their fixed locus in terms of the invariants of 3-elementary lattices.
We classify finite groups acting by birational transformations of a non-trivial Severi--Brauer surface over a field of characteristc zero that are not conjugate to subgroups of the automorphism group. Also, we show that the automorphism group of a smooth cubic surface over a field $K$ of characteristic zero that has no $K$-points is abelian, and find a sharp bound for the Jordan constants of birational automorphism groups of such cubic surfaces.
We prove that the closure (for the Zariski topology) of the set of polynomial automorphisms of the complex affine plane whose polydegree is (cd-1,b,a) contains all triangular automorphisms of degree cd+a, where a,b >1 and c>0 are integers and d=ab-1. When b=2, this result gives a family of counterexamples to a conjecture of Furter.
Let $S$ be a complex smooth projective surface of Kodaira dimension one. We show that the group $\mathrm{Aut}_s(S)$ of symplectic automorphisms acts trivially on the Albanese kernel $\mathrm{CH}_0(S)_\mathrm{alb}$ of the $0$-th Chow group $\mathrm{CH}_0(S)$, unless possibly if the geometric genus and the irregularity satisfy $p_g(S)=q(S)\in\{1,2\}$. In the exceptional cases, the image of the homomorphism $\mathrm{Aut}_s(S)\rightarrow \mathrm{Aut}(\mathrm{CH}_0(S)_\mathrm{alb})$ has order at most 3. Our arguments actually take care of the group $\mathrm{Aut}_f(S)$ of fibration-preserving automo…
We characterize simple complex abelian varieties and simple abelian surfaces in terms of primitivity of translation automorphisms. Applying this together with a result due to Diller and Favre, we then classify all primitive birational automorphisms with trivial first dynamical degree of smooth projective surfaces over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic.
We prove that a finite group acting by birational automorphisms of a non-trivial Severi-Brauer surface over a field of characteristic zero contains a normal abelian subgroup of index at most 3. Also, we find an explicit bound for orders of such finite groups in the case when the base field contains all roots of 1.
In this work we compute the Dixmier invariants and bitangents of the plane quartics with 3,6 or 9-cyclic automorphisms, we find that a quartic curve with 6-cyclic automorphism will have 3 horizontal bitangents which form an asysgetic triple. We also discuss the linear matrix representation problem of such curves, and find a degree 6 equation of 1 variable which solves the symbolic solution of the linear matrix representation problem for the curve with 6-cyclic automorphism.
We classify the bi-canonical representations of finite automorphisms on Enriques surfaces. There are three types of non-trivial cases and examples are given explicitly by Horikawa models. In particular, finite non-semi-symplectic automorphisms exist only in orders 4 and 8. One corollary is that any finite cyclic subgroup in the automorphism group of an Enriques surface has order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8. Moreover, for two of the three types, a uniqueness theorem for maximal-dimensional families is given.
We classify K3 surfaces with non-symplectic automorphism of order 16 in full generality. We show that the fixed locus contains only rational curves and points and we completely classify the seven possible configurations. If the Néron-Severi group has rank 6, there are two possibilities and if its rank is 14, there are five possibilities. In particular if the action of the automorphism is trivial on the Néron-Severi group, then we show that its rank is six.
For any field k of characteristic at most 5 we exhibit an explicit smooth quartic surface in projective threespace over k with trivial automorphism group over the algebraic closure of k. We also show how this can be extended to higher characteristics. Over the rationals we construct an example on which the set of rational points is Zariski dense.
This paper concerns complex algebraic K3 surfaces with an automorphism which acts trivially on the Neron-Severi group. Complementing a result by Vorontsov and Kondo, we determine those K3 surfaces where the order of the automorphism is a 2-power and equals the rank of the transcendental lattice. We also study the arithmetic of these K3 surfaces and comment on mirror symmetry
