Under a map T, a point x recurs at rate given by a sequence {r_n} near a point x_0 if d(T^n(x),x_0)< r_n infinitely often. Let us fix x_0, and consider the set of those x's. In this paper, we study the size of this set for expanding maps and obtain its measure and sharp lower bounds on its dimension involving the entropy of T, the local dimension near x_0 and the upper limit of 1/n log 1/r_n. We apply our results in several concrete examples including subshifts of finite type, Gauss transformation and inner functions.
We study the one-dimensional expanding Lorenz maps and show the existence of dense subset D of Lorens maps such that each f in D has an uncountable set of ergodic invariant probabilities with infinite Lyapunov exponent and positive entropy. Such measures may appear when the singularity has fast recurrence to itself. Conversely, if the singularity has slow recurrence to itself then the Lorenz map has an upper bound to the Lyapunov exponent of all invariant measures.
In this article we study quantitative recurrence for generic home- omorphisms on euclidian spaces and compact manifolds. As an application we show that the decay of correlations of generic homeomorphisms is slow.
We prove that for conformal expanding maps the return time does have constant multifractal spectrum. This is the counterpart of the result by Feng and Wu in the symbolic setting.
Let X be a subshift satisfy non-uniform structure. In this paper, we give quantitative estimate of the recurrence sets. These results can be applied to a large class of symbolic systems, including beta-shifts, S-gap shifts and their factors.
Let $K$ be a homogeneous self-similar set satisfying the strong separation condition. This paper is concerned with the quantitative recurrence properties of the natural map $T: K\rightarrow K$ induced by the shift. Let $μ$ be the natural self-similar measure supported on $K$. For a positive function $φ$ defined on $\mathbb{N}$, we show that the $μ$-measure of the following set \begin{equation*} R(φ):=\{x\in K: |T^n x-x|<φ(n) \; \text{for infinitely many} \; n\in\mathbb{N}\} \end{equation*} is null or full according to convergence or divergence of a certain series. Moreover, a similar dichotomy…
This article provides optimal constants for two quantitative recurrence problems. First of all for recurrence of maps of the interval [0,1] that preserve the Lebesgue measure and on the other hand Lagrange spectrum of interval exchange transformations. Both results are based on a non-conventional packing problem in the plane with respect to the "pseudo-norm" N(x,y) = sqrt(|xy|).
In this paper we prove that a class of skew products maps with non uniformly hyperbolic base has exponential decay of correlations. We apply this to obtain a logarithm law for the hitting time associated to a contracting Lorenz attractor at all the points having a well defined local dimension, and a quantitative recurrence estimation.
We prove quantitative recurrence and large deviations results for the Teichmuller geodesci flow on a connected component of a stratum of the moduli space $Q_g$ of holomorphic unit-area quadratic differentials on a compact genus $g \geq 2$ surface.
We consider finitely generated free semigroup actions on a compact metric space and obtain quantitative information on Poincaré recurrence, average first return time and hitting frequency for the random orbits induced by the semigroup action. Besides, we relate the recurrence to balls with the rates of expansion of the semigroup's generators and the topological entropy of the semigroup action. Finally, we establish a partial variational principle and prove an ergodic optimization for this kind of dynamical action.
Under some mild condition, a random walk in the plane is recurrent. In particular each trajectory is dense, and a natural question is how much time one needs to approach a given small neighborhood of the origin. We address this question in the case of some extended dynamical systems similar to planar random walks, including $\ZZ^2$-extension of hyperbolic dynamics. We define a pointwise recurrence rate and relate it to the dimension of the process, and establish a convergence in distribution of the rescaled return times near the origin.
In this paper we study the quantitative recurrence properties of self-conformal sets $X$ equipped with the map $T:X\to X$ induced by the left shift. In particular, given a function $φ:\mathbb{N}\to(0,\infty),$ we study the metric properties of the set $$R(T,φ)=\left\{x\in X:|T^nx-x|<φ(n)\textrm{ for infinitely many }n\in \mathbb{N}\right\}.$$ Our main result shows that for the natural measure supported on $X$, $R(T,φ)$ has zero measure if a natural volume sum converges, and under the open set condition $R(T,φ)$ has full measure if this volume sum diverges.
We consider toral extensions of hyperbolic dynamical systems. We prove that its quantitative recurrence (also with respect to given observables) and hitting time scale behavior depend on the arithmetical properties of the extension. By this we show that those systems have a polynomial decay of correlations with respect to $C^{r}$ observables, and give estimations for its exponent, which depend on $r$ and on the arithmetical properties of the system. We also show examples of systems of this kind having not the shrinking target property, and having a trivial limit distribution of return time sta…
We are interested in the asymptotic behaviour of the first return time of the orbits of a dynamical system into a small neighbourhood of their starting points. We study this quantity in the context of dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure. More precisely, we consider the case of $\mathbb{Z}$-extensions of subshifts of finite type. We also consider a toy probabilistic model to enlight the strategy of our proofs.
We investigate quantitative recurrence in systems having an infinite measure. We extend the Ornstein-Weiss theorem for a general class of infinite systems estimating return time in decreasing sequences of cylinders. Then we restrict to a class of one dimensional maps with indifferent fixed points and calculate quantitative recurrence in sequences of balls, obtaining that this is related to the behavior of the map near the fixed points.
For non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems we consider the time series of maxima along typical orbits. Using ideas based upon quantitative recurrence time statistics we prove convergence of the maxima (under suitable normalization) to an extreme value distribution, and obtain estimates on the rate of convergence. We show that our results are applicable to a range of examples, and include new results for Lorenz maps, certain partially hyperbolic systems, and non-uniformly expanding systems with sub-exponential decay of correlations. For applications where analytic results are not readily av…
In this paper we initiate a somewhat detailed investigation of the relationships between quantitative recurrence indicators and algorithmic complexity of orbits in weakly chaotic dynamical systems. We mainly focus on examples.
In this paper we prove that the Poincaré map associated to a Lorenz like flow has exponential decay of correlations with respect to Lipschitz observables. This implies that the hitting time associated to the flow satisfies a logarithm law. The hitting time $τ_r(x,x_0)$ is the time needed for the orbit of a point $x$ to enter for the first time in a ball $B_r(x_0)$ centered at $x_0$, with small radius $r$. As the radius of the ball decreases to 0 its asymptotic behavior is a power law whose exponent is related to the local dimension of the SRB measure at $x_0$: for each $x_0$ such that the loca…
Exploring abundance and non lacunarity of hyperbolic times for endomorphisms preserving an ergodic probability with positive Lyapunov exponents, we obtain that there are periodic points of period growing sublinearly with respect to the lenght of almost every dynamical ball. In particular, we conclude that any ergodic measure with positive Lyapunov exponents satisfy the nonuniform specification property. As consequences, we (re)-obtain estimates on the recurrence to a ball in terms of the Lyapunov exponents and we prove that any expanding measure is limit of Dirac measures on periodic points.
We study the set of points returning infinitely often to a sequence of targets dependent on the starting points. With an assumption of decay of correlations for L1 against bounded variations, we prove a generalized quantitative recurrence result under Lipschitz twists.
Using a recent Furstenberg structure theorem, we obtain a quantitative multiple recurrence theorem relative to any locally compact second countable Noetherian module over a syndetic ring.
We consider random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps, possibly having a non-degenerate critical set. We prove that, if the Lebesgue measure of the set of points failing the non-uniform expansion or the slow recurrence to the critical set at a certain time, for almost all random orbits, decays in a (stretched) exponential fashion, then the decay of correlations along random orbits is stretched exponential, up to some waiting time. As applications, we obtain almost sure stretched exponential decay of random correlations for Viana maps, as for a class of non-uniformly expanding local …
Lie-Poisson structure of the Lorenz'63 system gives a physical insight on its dynamical and statistical behavior considering the evolution of the associated Casimir functions. We study the invariant density and other recurrence features of a Markov expanding Lorenz-like map of the interval arising in the analysis of the predictability of the extreme values reached by particular physical observables evolving in time under the Lorenz'63 dynamics with the classical set of parameters. Moreover, we prove the statistical stability of such an invariant measure. This will allow us to further character…
We provide various counter examples for quantitative multiple recurrence problems for systems with more than one transformation. We show that $\bullet$ There exists an ergodic system $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,T_1,T_2)$ with two commuting transformations such that for every $0<\ell< 4$, there exists $A\in\mathcal{X}$ such that $$μ(A\cap T_{1}^{-n}A\cap T_{2}^{-n}A)<μ(A)^{\ell} \text{ for every } n\neq 0;$$ $\bullet$ There exists an ergodic system $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,T_1,T_2, T_{3})$ with three commuting transformations such that for every $\ell>0$, there exists $A\in\mathcal{X}$ such that $$μ(A\cap T_{1}…
Quantitative recurrence indicators are defined by measuring the first entrance time of the orbit of a point $x$ in a decreasing sequence of neighborhoods of another point $y$. It is proved that these recurrence indicators are a.e. greater or equal to the local dimension at $y$, then these recurrence indicators can be used to have a numerical upper bound on the local dimension of an invariant measure.
Let $Λ$ be a countable index set and $S=\{ϕ_i: i\in Λ\}$ be a conformal iterated function system on $[0,1]^d$ satisfying the open set condition. Denote by $J$ the attractor of $S$. With each sequence $(w_1,w_2,...)\in Λ^{\mathbb{N}}$ is associated a unique point $x\in [0,1]^d$. Let $J^\ast$ denote the set of points of $J$ with unique coding, and define the mapping $T:J^\ast \to J^\ast$ by $Tx= T (w_1,w_2, w_3...) = (w_2,w_3,...)$. In this paper, we consider the quantitative recurrence properties related to the dynamical system $(J^\ast, T)$. More precisely, let $f:[0,1]^d\to \mathbb{R}^+$ be a…
We prove an abstract result establishing that one can obtain the convergence of Rare Events Point Processes counting the number of orbital visits to a sequence of shrinking target sets from the convergence of corresponding point processes for some induced system and matching shadowing shrinking sets inside the base of the inducing scheme. We apply this result to prove a dichotomy for two classes of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps: Misiurewicz quadratic maps and doubly intermittent maps. The dichotomy holds in the sense that the shrinking target sets may accumulate in any individual poin…
We discuss selected topics of current research interest in the theory of dynamical systems, with emphasis on dimension theory, multifractal analysis, and quantitative recurrence. The topics include the quantitative versus the qualitative behavior of Poincaré recurrence, the product structure of invariant measures and return times, the dimension of invariant sets and invariant measures, the complexity of the level sets of local quantities from the point of view of Hausdorff dimension, and the conditional variational principles as well as their applications to problems in number theory. We prese…
We study decay of correlations, the asymptotic distribution of hitting times and fluctuations of the return times for a robust class of multidimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic transformations. Oliveira and Viana [15] proved that there is a unique equilibrium state for a large class of non- uniformly expanding transformations and Holder continuous potentials with small variation. For an open class of potentials with small variation, we prove quasi-compactness of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator in a space $V_θ$ of functions with essential bounded variation that strictly contain Holder con…
A classic approach in dynamical systems is to use particular geometric structures to deduce statistical properties, for example the existence of invariant measures with stochastic-like behaviour such as large deviations or decay of correlations. Such geometric structures are generally highly non-trivial and thus a natural question is the extent to which this approach can be applied. In this paper we show that in many cases stochastic-like behaviour itself implies that the system has certain non-trivial geometric properties, which are therefore necessary as well as sufficient conditions for the…
In [30] different statistical behavior of dynamical orbits without syndetic center are considered. In present paper we continue this project and consider different statistical behavior of dynamical orbits with nonempty syndetic center: Two of sixteen cases appear (for which other fourteen cases are still unknown) in transive topologically expanding or hyperbolic systems and are discovered to have full topological entropy for which it is also true if combined with non-recurrence and multifractal analysis such as quasi-regular set, irregular set and level sets. In this process a strong entropy-d…
We obtain a exponential large deviation upper bound for continuous observables on suspension semiflows over a non-uniformly expanding base transformation with non-flat singularities or criticalities, where the roof function defining the suspension behaves like the logarithm of the distance to the singular/critical set of the base map. That is, given a continuous function we consider its space average with respect to a physical measure and compare this with the time averages along orbits of the semiflow, showing that the Lebesgue measure of the set of points whose time averages stay away from t…

Given a $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ expanding map $T$ of the circle, we construct a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ of smooth functions on which the transfer operator $\mathcal{L}$ associated to $T$ acts as a compact operator. This result is made quantitative (in terms of singular values of the operator $\mathcal{L}$ acting on $\mathcal{H}$) using the language of Denjoy-Carleman classes. Moreover, the nuclear power decomposition of Baladi and Tsujii can be performed on the space $\mathcal{H}$, providing a bound on the growth of the dynamical determinant associated to $\mathcal{L}$.

In this work, we are interested in characterizing typical (generic) dimensional properties of invariant measures associated with the full-shift system, $T$, in a product space whose alphabet is a perfect and separable metric space (thus, complete and uncountable). More specifically, we show that the set of invariant measures with upper Hausdorff dimension equal to zero and lower packing dimension equal to infinity is a dense $G_δ$ subset of $\mathcal{M}(T)$, the space of $T$-invariant measures endowed with the weak topology. We also show that the set of invariant measures with upper rate of re…
Consider deterministic random walks F: I x Z -> I x Z, defined by F(x,n)=(f(x), K(x)+n), where f is an expanding Markov map on the interval I and K: I->Z. We study the universality (stability) of ergodic (for instance, recurrence and transience), geometric and multifractal properties in the class of perturbations of the type G(x,n)=(f_n(x), L(x,n)+n) which are topologically conjugate with F and f_n are expanding maps exponentially close to f when |n| goes to infinity. We give applications of these results in the study of the regularity of conjugacies between (generalized) infinitely renormaliz…
We study the stochastic stability in the zero-noise limit from a quantitative point of view. We consider smooth expanding maps of the circle, perturbed by additive noise. We show that in this case the zero-noise limit has a quadratic speed of convergence, as conjectured by Lin, in 2005, after numerical experiments (see arXiv:math/0406201 ). This is obtained by providing an explicit formula for the first and second term in the Taylor's expansion of the response of the stationary measure to the small noise perturbation. These terms depend on important features of the dynamics and of the noise wh…
We obtain an analogue of the prime number theorem for a class of branched covering maps on the $2$-sphere called expanding Thurston maps $f$, which are topological models of some rational maps without any smoothness or holomorphicity assumption. More precisely, by studying dynamical zeta functions and, more generally, dynamical Dirichlet series for $f$, we show that the number of primitive periodic orbits of $f$, ordered by a weight on each point induced by a non-constant (eventually) positive real-valued Hölder continuous function $ϕ$ on $S^2$ satisfying some additional regularity conditions,…
Markov expanding maps, a class of simple chaotic systems, are commonly used as models for chaotic dynamics, but existing numerical methods to study long-time statistical properties such as invariant measures have a poor trade-off between computational effort and accuracy. We develop a spectral Galerkin method for these maps' transfer operators, estimating statistical quantities using finite submatrices of the transfer operators' infinite Fourier or Chebyshev basis coefficient matrices. Rates of convergence of these estimates are obtained via quantitative bounds on the full transfer operator ma…
We prove strong statistical stability of a large class of one-dimensional maps which may have an arbitrary finite number of discontinuities and of non-degenerate critical points and/or singular points with infinite derivative, and satisfy some expansivity and bounded recurrence conditions. This generalizes known results for maps with critical points and bounded derivatives and in particular proves statistical stability of Lorenz-like maps with critical points and singularities studied in [S. Luzzatto and W. Tucker. Non-uniformly expanding dynamics in maps with singularities and criticalities. …
