We consider the growth rate of the Mahler measure in discrete dynamical systems with the Laurent property, and in cluster algebras, and compare this with other measures of growth. In particular, we formulate the conjecture that the growth rate of the logarithmic Mahler measure coincides with the algebraic entropy, which is defined in terms of degree growth. Evidence for this conjecture is provided by exact and numerical calculations of the Mahler measure for a family of Laurent polynomials generated by rank 2 cluster algebras, for a recurrence of third order related to the Markoff numbers, and for the Somos-4 recurrence. Also, for the sequence of Laurent polynomials associated with the Kronecker quiver (the cluster algebra of affine type $\tilde{A}_1)$ we prove a precise formula for the leading order asymptotics of the logarithmic Mahler measure, which grows linearly.
We express the Mahler measures of $23$ families of Laurent polynomials in terms of Eisenstein-Kronecker series. These Laurent polynomials arise as Landau-Ginzburg potentials on Fano $3$-folds, $16$ of which define $K3$ hypersurfaces of generic Picard rank $19$, and the rest are of generic Picard rank $< 19$. We relate the Mahler measure at each rational singular moduli to the value at $3$ of the $L$-function of some weight-$3$ newform. Moreover, we find $10$ exotic relations among the Mahler measures of these families.
Given a $k$-variable Laurent polynomial $F$, any $l\times k$ integer matrix $A$ naturally defines an $l$-variable Laurent polynomial $F_A.$ I prove that for fixed $F$ the set $\mathcal M(F)$ of all the logarithmic Mahler measures $m(F_A)$ of $F_A$ for all $A$ is a closed subset of the real line. Moreover, the matrices $A$ can be assumed to be of a special form, which I call Primitive Hermite Normal Form. Furthermore, if $F$ has integer coefficients and $\mathcal M(F)$ contains $0,$ then $0$ is an isolated point of this set. I also show that, for a given bound $B>0$, the set ${\mathcal M}_B$ of…
In 1969, I. Bernstein and S. Gelfand introduced an object, which is now called the zeta Mahler function (ZMF, also zeta Mahler measure) and related to the Mahler measure. Here we discuss a family of ZMFs attached to the Laurent polynomials $k + (x_1 + x_1^{-1}) \cdots (x_r + x_r^{-1})$, where $k$ is real. We give explicit formulae, present examples and establish properties for these ZMFs, such as an RH-type phenomenon. Further, we explore relations with the Mahler measure.
After Furstenberg had provided a first glimpse of remarkable rigidity phenomena associated with the joint action of several commuting automorphisms (or endomorphisms) of a compact abelian group, further key examples motivated the development of an extensive theory of such actions. Two of Mahler's achievements, the recognition of the significance of Mahler measure of multivariate polynomials in relating the lengths and heights of products of polynomials in terms of the corresponding quantities for the constituent factors, and his work on additive relations in fields, have unexpectedly played im…
For $p \in \mathbb{Q}_+ \smallsetminus \{ 1 \}$ a positive rational number different from one, we say that the Puisseux series $f \in \mathbb{C}((t))^\text{alg}$ is $p$-Mahler of non-exceptional polynomial type if there is a polynomial $P \in \mathbb{C}(t)^\text{alg}[X]$ of degree at least two which is not conjugate to either a monomial or to plus or minus a Chebyshev polynomial for which the equation $f(t^p) = P(f(t))$ holds. We show that if $p$ and $q$ are multiplicatively independent and $f$ and $g$ are $p$-Mahler and $q$-Mahler, respectively, of non-exceptional polynomial type, then $f$ an…
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a function field of characteristic $p>0$. We recently established the analogue of a theorem of Ku. Nishioka for linear Mahler systems defined over $\mathbb{K}(z)$. This paper is dedicated to proving the following refinement of this theorem. Let $f_{1}(z),\ldots f_{n}(z)$ be $d$-Mahler functions such that $\overline{\mathbb{K}}(z)\left(f_{1}(z),\ldots, f_{n}(z)\right)$ is a regular extension over $\overline{\mathbb{K}}(z)$. Then, every homogeneous algebraic relation over $\overline{\mathbb{K}}$ between their values at a regular algebraic point arises as the specialization of…
This is the second part of a work devoted to the study of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence. From the lifting theorem obtained in the first part, we first derive a general result, showing that Mahler functions in several variables, associated with transformations having multiplicatively dependent spectral radii, take algebraic independent values at algebraic points provided that these points are sufficiently independent. Then, we focus on applications of this result and of the two main results of Part I of this work. Our…
For an algebraic number $α$ we denote by $M(α)$ the Mahler measure of $α$. As $M(α)$ is again an algebraic number (indeed, an algebraic integer), $M(\cdot)$ is a self-map on $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, and therefore defines a dynamical system. The \emph{orbit size} of $α$, denoted $\# \mathcal{O}_M(α)$, is the cardinality of the forward orbit of $α$ under $M$. We prove that for every degree at least 3 and every non-unit norm, there exist algebraic numbers of every orbit size. We then prove that for algebraic units of degree 4, the orbit size must be 1, 2, or infinity. We also show that there exis…
Let $f : [0,1)\rightarrow [0,1)$ be a $2$-interval piecewise affine increasing map which is injective but not surjective. Such a map $f$ has a rotation number and can be parametrized by three real numbers. We make fully explicit the dynamics of $f$ thanks to two specific functions $δ$ and $ϕ$ depending on these parameters whose definitions involve Hecke-Mahler series. As an application, we show that the rotation number of $f$ is rational, when the three parameters are algebraic numbers.
Mahler's measure defines a dynamical system on the algebraic numbers. In this paper, we study the problem of which number fields have points which wander under the iteration of Mahler's measure. We completely solve the problem for all abelian number fields, and more generally, for all extensions of the rationals of degree at most five.
We show that the Mahler measure of every Borwein polynomial -- a polynomial with coefficients in $ \{-1,0,1 \}$ having non-zero constant term -- can be expressed as a maximal Lyapunov exponent of a matrix cocycle that arises in the spectral theory of binary constant-length substitutions. In this way, Lehmer's problem for height-one polynomials having minimal Mahler measure becomes equivalent to a natural question from the spectral theory of binary constant-length substitutions. This supports another connection between Mahler measures and dynamics, beyond the well-known appearance of Mahler mea…

This work is devoted to the study of the support of a Laurent series in several variables which is algebraic over the ring of power series over a characteristic zero field. Our first result is the existence of a kind of maximal dual cone of the support of such a Laurent series. As an application of this result we provide a gap theorem for Laurent series which are algebraic over the field of formal power series. We also relate these results to diophantine properties of the fields of Laurent series.
As an analogue of Mahler's classification for real numbers, Bundschuh introduced a classification for Laurent series over a finite field, divided into $A,S,T,U$-numbers.It is known that each of $A,S,U$-numbers is nonempty. On the other hand, the existence of $T$-numbers is open.In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to the problem.
We develop a theory of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence, which also includes the possibility of dealing with several systems associated with sufficiently independent matrix transformations. Our main results go far beyond the existing literature, also surpassing those of two unpublished preprints the authors made available on the arXiv in 2018. The main new feature is that they apply now without any restriction on the matrices defining the corresponding Mahler systems. As a consequence, we settle several problems concern…
We establish a functional identity for Mahler measures of the two-parametric family $P_{a,c}(x,y)=a(x+1/x)+y+1/y+c$. Our result extends an identity proven in a paper of Lalín, Zudilin and Samart. As a by-product, we obtain evaluations of $m(P_{a,c})$ for some algebraic values of $a$ and $c$ in terms of special values of $L$-functions and logarithms. We also give a sufficient condition for validity of a certain identity between the elliptic integrals of the first and the third kind, which implies several identities for $m(P_{a,c})$.
We study the algebraic closure of $\mathbb K(\!(x)\!)$, the field of power series in several indeterminates over a field $\mathbb K$. In characteristic zero we show that the elements algebraic over $\mathbb K(\!(x)\!)$ can be expressed as Puiseux series such that the convex hull of its support is essentially a polyhedral rational cone, strengthening the known results. In positive characteristic we construct algebraic closed fields containing the field of power series and we give examples showing that the results proved in characteristic zero are longer valid in positive characteristic.
