In 1969, I. Bernstein and S. Gelfand introduced an object, which is now called the zeta Mahler function (ZMF, also zeta Mahler measure) and related to the Mahler measure.
Here we discuss a family of ZMFs attached to the Laurent polynomials $k + (x_1 + x_1^{-1}) \cdots (x_r + x_r^{-1})$, where $k$ is real. We give explicit formulae, present examples and establish properties for these ZMFs, such as an RH-type phenomenon. Further, we explore relations with the Mahler measure.
We consider a generalization of the Mahler measure of a multivariable polynomial $P$ as the integral of $\log^k|P|$ in the unit torus, as opposed to the classical definition with the integral of $\log|P|$. A zeta Mahler measure, involving the integral of $|P|^s$, is also considered. Specific examples are computed, yielding special values of zeta functions, Dirichlet $L$-functions, and polylogarithms.
The Mahler measure was introduced by Mahler in the study of number theory. It is known that the Mahler measure appears in different areas of mathematics and physics. On the other hand, we have been investigated a new class of zeta functions for various kinds of walks including quantum walks by a series of our previous work on "Zeta Correspondence". The quantum walk is a quantum counterpart of the random walk. In this paper, we present a new relation between the Mahler measure and our zeta function for quantum walks. Firstly we consider this relation in the case of one-dimensional quantum walks…
The Mahler measures of some n-variable polynomial families are given in terms of special values of the Riemann zeta function and a Dirichlet L-series, generalizing the results of \cite{L}. The technique introduced in this work also motivates certain identities among Bernoulli numbers and symmetric functions.
We consider Akatsuka's zeta Mahler measure as a generating function of higher Mahler measure $m_k(P)$ of a polynomial $P,$ where $m_k(P)$ is the integral of $\log^{k}\left| P \right|$ over the complex unit circle. Restricting ourselves to $\displaystyle P(x)=x+r$ with $|r|=1$ we show some new asymptotic results regarding $m_k(P)$, especially $\left| m_k(P) \right|/k! \to 1/π$ as $k \to \infty.$
In this work we apply the techniques that were developed in [Lalin: An algebraic integration for Mahler measure] in order to study several examples of multivariable polynomials whose Mahler measure is expressed in terms of special values of the Riemann zeta function or Dirichlet L-series. The examples may be understood in terms of evaluations of regulators. Moreover, we apply the same techniques to the computation of generalized Mahler measures, in the sense of Gon and Oyanagi [Gon, Oyanagi: Generalized Mahler measures and multiple sine functions]
The aim of this paper is to prove a Mahler measure formula of a four-variable Laurent polynomial whose zero locus defines a Calabi-Yau threefold. We show that its Mahler measure is a rational linear combination of a special L-value of the normalized newform in S_4(Gamma_0(8)) and a Riemann zeta value. This is equivalent to a new formula for a 6F5-hypergeometric series evaluated at 1.
This article investigates the Mahler measure of a family of 2-variate polynomials, denoted by $P_d, d\geq 1$, unbounded in both degree and genus. By using a closed formula for the Mahler measure introduced in "Volume function and Mahler measure of exact polynomials" (by Guilloux and Marché), we are able to compute $m(P_d)$, for arbitrary $d$, as a sum of the values of dilogarithm at special roots of unity. We prove that $m(P_d)$ converges and the limit is proportional to $ζ(3)$, where $ζ$ is the Riemann zeta function.
In 1990, Ku. Nishioka proved a fundamental theorem for Mahler's method, which is the analog of the Siegel-Shidlovskii theorem for Mahler functions. In this article, we establish a version of the theorem of Ku. Nishioka which is also valid for Mahler systems over function fields of positive characteristic. We follow the approach introduced by Denis in 1999 in a particular case. It is based on an algebraic independence criterion from Philippon. The main motivation of this work is built on the following remarkable fact discovered by Denis. Over function fields of positive characteristic, analogs …
We prove a variety of explicit formulas relating special values of generalized hypergeometric functions to lattice sums with four indices of summation. These results are related to Boyd's conjectured identities between Mahler measures and special values of $L$-series of elliptic curves.
The Mahler measure of a polynomial $P$ in $n$ variables is defined as the mean of $\log|P|$ over the $n$-dimensional torus. For certain polynomials with integer coefficients in two variables the Mahler measure is known to be related to special values of L-functions of arithmetic objects (e.g. Dirichlet characters and elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$). Inspired by work of Deninger Boyd has investigated this relationship numerically. In this paper we reduce some conjectures of Boyd to Beilinson`s conjectures on special values of L-functions. The methods in use are widely of K-theoretical nature…
The purpose of this short note is to give a proof of the following identity between (logarithmic) Mahler measures m(y^2+2xy+y-x^3-2x^2-x)=5/7*m(y^2+4xy+y-x^3+x^2) which is one of many examples that arise from the comparison of Mahler measures and special values of L-functions.
This is the second part of a work devoted to the study of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence. From the lifting theorem obtained in the first part, we first derive a general result, showing that Mahler functions in several variables, associated with transformations having multiplicatively dependent spectral radii, take algebraic independent values at algebraic points provided that these points are sufficiently independent. Then, we focus on applications of this result and of the two main results of Part I of this work. Our…
In this paper we prove that the Mahler measures of the Laurent polynomials $(x+x^{-1})(y+y^{-1})(z+z^{-1})+k$, $(x+x^{-1})^2(y+y^{-1})^2(1+z)^3z^{-2}-k$, and $x^4+y^4+z^4+1+k^{1/4}xyz$, for various values of $k$, are of the form $r_1 L'(f,0)+r_2 L'(χ,-1)$, where $r_1,r_2\in \mathbb{Q}$, $f$ is a CM newform of weight 3, and $χ$ is a quadratic character. Since it has been proved that these Maher measures can also be expressed in terms of logarithms and $_5F_4$-hypergeometric series, we obtain several new hypergeometric evaluations and transformations from these results.
We study the Mahler measures of certain families of Laurent polynomials in two and three variables. Each of the known Mahler measure formulas for these families involves $L$-values of at most one newform and/or at most one quadratic character. In this paper, we show, either rigorously or numerically, that the Mahler measures of some polynomials are related to $L$-values of multiple newforms and quadratic characters simultaneously. The results suggest that the number of modular $L$-values appearing in the formulas significantly depends on the shape of the algebraic value of the parameter chosen…
In this article, we study the Mahler measures of more than 500 families of reciprocal polynomials defining genus 2 and genus 3 curves. We numerically find relations between the Mahler measures of these polynomials with special values of $L$-functions. We also numerically discover more than 100 identities between Mahler measures involving different families of polynomials defining genus 2 and genus 3 curves. Furthermore, we study the Mahler measures of several families of nonreciprocal polynomials defining genus 2 curves and numerically find relations between the Mahler measures of these famili…
In this note we prove algebraic independence results for the values of a special class of Mahler functions. In particular, the generating functions of Thue-Morse, regular paperfolding and Cantor sequences belong to this class, and we obtain the algebraic independence of the values of these functions at every non-zero algebraic point in the open unit disk. The proof uses results on Mahler's method.
The metric Mahler measure was first studied by Dubickas and Smyth in 2001 as a means of phrasing Lehmer's conjecture in topological language. More recent work of the author examined a parametrized family of generalized metric Mahler measures that gives rise to a series of new, and apparently difficult, problems. We establish a connection between these metric Mahler measures and the theory of continued fractions in a certain class of special cases. Our results enable us to calculate metric Mahler measures in several new examples.
We prove that sparse resultants having Mahler measure equal to zero are those whose Newton polytope has dimension one. We then compute the Mahler measure of resultants in dimension two, and examples in dimension three and four. Finally, we show that sparse resultants are tempered polynomials. This property suggests that their Mahler measure may lead to special values of L-functions and polylogarithms.
We continue to investigate the relation between the Mahler measure of certain two variable polynomials, the values of the Bloch--Wigner dilogarithm $D(z)$ and the values $ζ_F(2)$ of zeta functions of number fields. Specifically, we define a class $\A$ of polynomials $A$ with the property that $πm(A)$ is a linear combination of values $D$ at algebraic arguments. For many polynomials in this class the corresponding argument of $D$ is in the Bloch group, which leads to formulas expressing $πm(A)$ as a linear combination with unspecified rational coefficients of $V_F$ for certain number fields $F$…
We consider the Mahler measure of the polynomial 1+x_1+x_2+x_3+x_4, which is the first case not yet evaluated explicitly. A conjecture due to F. Rodriguez-Villegas represents this Mahler measure as a special value at the point 4 of the L-function of a modular modular form of weight 3. We prove that this Mahler measure is equal to a linear combination of double L-values of certain meromorphic modular forms of weight 4.
We study rather general multiple zeta-functions whose denominators are given by polynomials. The main aim is to prove explicit formulas for the values of those multiple zeta-functions at non-positive integer points. We first treat the case when the polynomials are power sums, and observe that some ``trivial zeros'' exist. We also prove that special values are sometimes transcendental. Then we proceed to the general case, and show an explicit expression of special values at non-positive integer points which involves certain period integrals. We give examples of transcendental values of those sp…
We provide a general result for the algebraic independence of Mahler functions by a new method based on asymptotic analysis. As a consequence of our method, these results hold not only over $\mathbb{C}(z)$, but also over $\mathbb{C}(z)(\mathcal{M})$, where $\mathcal{M}$ is the set of all meromorphic functions. Several examples and corollaries are given, with special attention to nonnegative regular functions.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has potential complex multiplication by the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ we construct a polynomial $P_E \in \mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ which is a planar model of $E$ and such that the Mahler measure $m(P_E) \in \mathbb{R}$ is related to the special value of the $L$-function $L(E,s)$ at $s = 2$.
There are many examples of several-variable polynomials whose Mahler measure is expressed in terms of special values of polylogarithms. These examples are expected to be related to computations of regulators, as observed by Deninger, and later Rodriguez-Villegas, and Maillot. While Rodriguez-Villegas made this relationship explicit for the two variable case, it is our goal to understand the three variable case and shed some light on the examples with more variables.
We review recent development of short uniform random walks, with a focus on its connection to (zeta) Mahler measures and modular parametrisation of the density functions. Furthermore, we extend available "probabilistic" techniques to cover a variation of random walks and reduce some three-variable Mahler measures, which are conjectured to evaluate in terms of $L$-values of modular forms, to hypergeometric form.
We establish a functional identity for Mahler measures of the two-parametric family $P_{a,c}(x,y)=a(x+1/x)+y+1/y+c$. Our result extends an identity proven in a paper of Lalín, Zudilin and Samart. As a by-product, we obtain evaluations of $m(P_{a,c})$ for some algebraic values of $a$ and $c$ in terms of special values of $L$-functions and logarithms. We also give a sufficient condition for validity of a certain identity between the elliptic integrals of the first and the third kind, which implies several identities for $m(P_{a,c})$.
We show how the theory of linear forms in two logarithms allows one to get effective irrationality measures for $n$-th roots of rational numbers ${a \over b}$, when $a$ is very close to $b$. We give a $p$-adic analogue of this result under the assumption that $a$ is $p$-adically very close to $b$, that is, that a large power of $p$ divides $a-b$. As an application, we solve completely certain families of Thue-Mahler equations. Our results illustrate, admittedly in a very special situation, the strength of the known estimates for linear forms in logarithms.
We use the elliptic regulator to recover some identities between Mahler measures involving certain families of genus 2 curves that were conjectured by Boyd and proven by Bertin and Zudilin by differentiating the Mahler measures and using hypergeometric identities. Since our proofs involve the regulator, they yield light into the expected relation of each Mahler measure to special values of $L$-functions of certain elliptic curves.
The Conjecture of Lehmer is proved to be true. The proof mainly relies upon: (i) the properties of the Parry Upper functions $f_{\houseα}(z)$ associated with the dynamical zeta functions $ζ_{\houseα}(z)$ of the Rényi--Parry arithmetical dynamical systems ($β$-shift), for $α$ a reciprocal algebraic integer of house $\houseα$ greater than 1, (ii) the discovery of lenticuli of poles of $ζ_{\houseα}(z)$ which uniformly equidistribute at the limit on a limit "lenticular" arc of the unit circle, when $\houseα$ tends to $1^+$, giving rise to a continuous lenticular minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(\houseα)$ of …
Adopting the Mahler measure from number theory, we introduce it to toric quiver gauge theories, and study some of its salient features and physical implications. We propose that the Mahler measure is a universal measure for the quiver, encoding its dynamics with the monotonic behaviour along a so-called Mahler flow including two special points at isoradial and tropical limits. Along the flow, the amoeba, from tropical geometry, provides geometric interpretations for the dynamics of the quiver. In the isoradial limit, the maximization of Mahler measure is shown to be equivalent to $a$-maximizat…
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a function field of characteristic $p>0$. We recently established the analogue of a theorem of Ku. Nishioka for linear Mahler systems defined over $\mathbb{K}(z)$. This paper is dedicated to proving the following refinement of this theorem. Let $f_{1}(z),\ldots f_{n}(z)$ be $d$-Mahler functions such that $\overline{\mathbb{K}}(z)\left(f_{1}(z),\ldots, f_{n}(z)\right)$ is a regular extension over $\overline{\mathbb{K}}(z)$. Then, every homogeneous algebraic relation over $\overline{\mathbb{K}}$ between their values at a regular algebraic point arises as the specialization of…
In this note we shall study the Witten multiple zeta function associated to the Lie algebra so(5) defined by Matsumoto. Our main result shows that its special values at nonnegative integers are always expressible by alternating Euler sums. More precisely, every such special value of weight w>2 is a finite rational linear combination of alternating Euler sums of weight w and depth at most two, except when the only nonzero argument is one of the two last variables in which case $ζ(w-1)$ is needed.
Given a $k$-variable Laurent polynomial $F$, any $l\times k$ integer matrix $A$ naturally defines an $l$-variable Laurent polynomial $F_A.$ I prove that for fixed $F$ the set $\mathcal M(F)$ of all the logarithmic Mahler measures $m(F_A)$ of $F_A$ for all $A$ is a closed subset of the real line. Moreover, the matrices $A$ can be assumed to be of a special form, which I call Primitive Hermite Normal Form. Furthermore, if $F$ has integer coefficients and $\mathcal M(F)$ contains $0,$ then $0$ is an isolated point of this set. I also show that, for a given bound $B>0$, the set ${\mathcal M}_B$ of…
The volume of the unit sphere in every dimension is given a new interpretation as a product of special values of the zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}$, akin to volume formulas of Minkowski and Siegel in the theory of arithmetic groups. A product formula is found for this zeta function that specializes to Catalan numbers. Moreover, certain closed-form expressions for various other zeta values are deduced, in particular leading to an alternative perspective on Euler's values of the Riemann zeta function.
We define a generalized class of modified zeta series transformations generating the partial sums of the Hurwitz zeta function and series expansions of the Lerch transcendent function. The new transformation coefficients we define within the article satisfy expansions by generalized harmonic number sequences, or the partial sums of the Hurwitz zeta function, which are analogous to known properties for the Stirling numbers of the first kind and for the known transformation coefficients employed to enumerate variants of the polylogarithm function series. Applications of the new results we prove …
In this paper, we provide an alternative method to calculate the values of generalized multiple Hurwitz zeta function at non-positive integers by means of \emph{Raabe}'s formula and the \textit{Bernoulli} numbers.
We calculate the special values of the spectral zeta function of the non-commutative harmonic oscillator, and give a general formula for them as integrals of certain algebraic functions. This is a generalization of the result by Ichinose-Wakayama (2005), in which the first two special values are studied.
We prove that the special value conjecture for the Zeta function of a proper, regular arithmetic scheme X that we formulated in our previous article [8] is compatible with the functional equation of the Zeta function provided that the factor C(X,n) we were not able to compute in loc. cit. has the simple explicit form suggested in [9].
In this paper we define a continuous version of multiple zeta functions. They can be analytically continued to meromorphic functions on $\mathbb{C}^r$ with only simple poles at some special hyperplanes. The evaluations of these functions at positive integers (continuous multiple zeta values) satisfy the shuffle product. We give a detailed analysis about the depth structure of continuous multiple zeta values. There are also sum formulas for continuous multiple zeta values. Lastly we calculate some special continuous multiple zeta values in terms of special values of multiple polylogarithms.
We discuss computation of the special values of partial zeta functions associated to totally real number fields. The main tool is the \emph{Eisenstein cocycle} $Ψ$, a group cocycle for $GL_{n} (\Z )$; the special values are computed as periods of $Ψ$, and are expressed in terms of generalized Dedekind sums. We conclude with some numerical examples for cubic and quartic fields of small discriminant.
In this paper we demonstrate the importance of a mathematical constant which is the value of several interesting numerical series involving harmonic numbers, zeta values, and logarithms. We also evaluate in closed form a number of numerical and power series.
The special uniformity of zeta functions claims that pure non-abelian zeta functions coincide with group zeta functions associated to the special linear groups. Naturally associated are three aspects, namely, the analytic, arithmetic, and geometric aspects. In the first paper of this series, we expose intrinsic geometric structures of our zetas by counting semi-stable bundles on curves defined over finite fields in terms of their automorphism groups and global sections. We show that such a counting maybe read from Artin zetas which are abelian in nature. This paper also contains an appendix wr…
We compute the special values of partial zeta function at $s=0$ for family of real quadratic fields $K_n$ and ray class ideals $\fb_n$ such that $\fb_n^{-1} = [1,δ(n)]$ where the continued fraction expansion of $δ(n)$ is purely periodic and each terms are polynomial in $n$ of bounded degree $d$. With an additional assumptions, we prove that the special values of partial zeta function at $s=0$ behaves as quasi-polynomial. We apply this to obtain that the special values the Hecke's $L$-functions at $s=0$ for a family of for a Dirichlet character $χ$ behave as quasi-polynomial as well. We compute…
We study the special value conjecture for the Zeta function of a proper regular arithmetic scheme X introduced by Flach and Morin in the case n=1. We compute the correction factor C(X,1) left unspecified in the original statement of the Flach-Morin Conjecture, thereby developing some results on the eh-topology introduced by Geisser. We then specialize further to the case where X is an arithmetic surface and show that the conjecture of Flach and Morin is equivalent to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture.
The non-commutative harmonic oscillator is a $2\times2$-system of harmonic oscillators with a non-trivial correlation. We write down explicitly the special value at $s=2$ of the spectral zeta function of the non-commutative harmonic oscillator in terms of the complete elliptic integral of the first kind, which is a special case of a hypergeometric function.
In this note we shall study the Witten multiple zeta function associated to the exceptional Lie algebra g_2. Our main result shows that its special values at nonnegative integers can always be expressed as rational linear combinations of the multi-polylogs evaluated at 12th roots of unity, except for two irregular cases.
In this paper, we compare the two definitions of Bloch group, and survey the elements in Bloch group. We confirm the Lichtenbaum conjecture on the field $Q(ζ_p)$ under the assumption the truth of the base of the Bloch group of $Q(ζ_p)$ and the relations of $K_2$ group. We also study the Lichtenbaum conjecture on non-Galois fields. By PARI, we get some equations of the zeta functions on special values and the structure of tame kernel of these fields.
This paper pursues positive characteristic analogues of the results of Furusho, Komori, Matsumoto and Tsumura on $p$-adic multiple $L$-functions. We consider $\infty$-adic and $v$-adic multiple zeta functions concerned by Anglès, Ngo Dac and Tavares Ribeiro. Our main results in this paper consist of: (1) integral expressions of special values of $\infty$-adic multiple zeta functions, (2) integral expression of $v$-adic multiple zeta functions themselves similar to those of $p$-adic multiple $L$-functions, (3) Kummer-type congruence for the special values of $v$-adic multiple zeta functions at …
