In this work we apply the techniques that were developed in [Lalin: An algebraic integration for Mahler measure] in order to study several examples of multivariable polynomials whose Mahler measure is expressed in terms of special values of the Riemann zeta function or Dirichlet L-series. The examples may be understood in terms of evaluations of regulators. Moreover, we apply the same techniques to the computation of generalized Mahler measures, in the sense of Gon and Oyanagi [Gon, Oyanagi: Generalized Mahler measures and multiple sine functions]
We present a proof of the formula, due to Mellit and Brunault, which evaluates an integral of the regulator of two modular units to the value of the $L$-series of a modular form of weight 2 at $s=2$. Applications of the formula to computing Mahler measures are discussed.
Recently the second author and Qin numerically verified some Mahler measure identities of genus 2 and 3 polynomial families. In this paper, we use the elliptic regulator to prove an identity invoving shifted Mahler measure for Boyd's family.
We use the elliptic regulator to recover some identities between Mahler measures involving certain families of genus 2 curves that were conjectured by Boyd and proven by Bertin and Zudilin by differentiating the Mahler measures and using hypergeometric identities. Since our proofs involve the regulator, they yield light into the expected relation of each Mahler measure to special values of $L$-functions of certain elliptic curves.
There are many examples of several-variable polynomials whose Mahler measure is expressed in terms of special values of polylogarithms. These examples are expected to be related to computations of regulators, as observed by Deninger, and later Rodriguez-Villegas, and Maillot. While Rodriguez-Villegas made this relationship explicit for the two variable case, it is our goal to understand the three variable case and shed some light on the examples with more variables.
We show that the Mahler measure of a defining equation of the modular curve $X_1(13)$ is equal to the derivative at $s=0$ of the $L$-function of a cusp form of weight 2 and level 13 with integral Fourier coefficients. The proof combines Deninger's method, an explicit version of Beilinson's theorem together with an idea of Merel to express the regulator integral as a linear combination of periods. Finally, we present further examples related to the modular curves of level 16, 18 and 25.
The aim of this note is to prove the Mahler measure identity $m(x+x^{-1}+y+y^{-1}+5) = 6 m(x+x^{-1}+y+y^{-1}+1)$ which was conjectured by Boyd. The proof is achieved by proving relationships between regulators of both curves.
We study the dynamical Mahler measure of multivariate polynomials and present dynamical analogues of various results from the classical Mahler measure as well as examples of formulas allowing the computation of the dynamical Mahler measure in certain cases. We discuss multivariate analogues of dynamical Kronecker's Lemma and present some improvements on the result for two variables due to Carter, Lalín, Manes, Miller, and Mocz.
We study the distribution of Mahler's measures of reciprocal polynomials with complex coefficients and bounded even degree. We discover that the distribution function associated to Mahler's measure restricted to monic reciprocal polynomials is a reciprocal (or anti-reciprocal) Laurent polynomial on [1,\infty) and identically zero on [0,1). Moreover, the coefficients of this Laurent polynomial are rational numbers times a power of π. We are led to this discovery by the computation of the Mellin transform of the distribution function. This Mellin transform is an even (or odd) rational function w…
We prove that the (logarithmic) Mahler measure $m(P)$ of $P(x,y)=x+1/x+y+1/y+3$ is equal to the $L$-value $2L'(E,0)$ attached to the elliptic curve $E:P(x,y)=0$ of conductor 21. In order to do this we investigate the measure of a more general Laurent polynomial $P_{a,b,c}(x,y)=a(x+1/x)+b(y+1/y)+c$ and show that the wanted quantity $m(P)$ is related to a "half-Mahler" measure of $\tilde P(x,y)=P_{\sqrt{7},1,3}(x,y)$. In the finale we use the modular parametrization of the elliptic curve $\tilde P(x,y)=0$, again of conductor 21, due to Ramanujan and the Mellit--Brunault formula for the regulator…
The Vol-Det Conjecture relates the volume and the determinant of a hyperbolic alternating link in $S^3$. We use exact computations of Mahler measures of two-variable polynomials to prove the Vol-Det Conjecture for many infinite families of alternating links. We conjecture a new lower bound for the Mahler measure of certain two-variable polynomials in terms of volumes of hyperbolic regular ideal bipyramids. Associating each polynomial to a toroidal link using the toroidal dimer model, we show that every polynomial which satisfies this conjecture with a strict inequality gives rise to many infin…
In a recent paper the team of Cogdell, Jorgenson and Smajlović develop infinite series representations for the logarithmic Mahler measure of a complex linear form, with 4 or more variables. We establish the case of 3 variables, by bounding an integral with integrand involving the random walk probability density $a\displaystyle\int_0^\infty tJ_0(at) \displaystyle\prod_{m=0}^2 J_0(r_m t)dt$, where $J_0$ is the order zero Bessel function of the first kind, and $a$ and {$r_m$} are positive real numbers. To facilitate our proof we develop an alternative description of the integral's asymptotic beha…
If $α$ is a non-zero algebraic number, we let $m(α)$ denote the Mahler measure of the minimal polynomial of $α$ over $\mathbb Z$. A series of articles by Dubickas and Smyth, and later by the author, develop a modified version of the Mahler measure called the $t$-metric Mahler measure, denoted $m_t(α)$. For fixed $α\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$, the map $t\mapsto m_t(α)$ is continuous, and moreover, is infinitely differentiable at all but finitely many points, called {\it exceptional points} for $α$. It remains open to determine whether there is a sequence of elements $α_n\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$ such that …
We present improvements to the index-calculus algorithm for the computation of the ideal class group and regulator of a real quadratic field. Our improvements consist of applying the double large prime strategy, an improved structured Gaussian elimination strategy, and the use of Bernstein's batch smoothness algorithm. We achieve a significant speed-up and are able to compute the ideal class group structure and the regulator corresponding to a number field with a 110-decimal digit discriminant.
We describe and give computational results of a procedure to compute the divisor class number and regulator of most purely cubic function fields of unit rank 2. Our implementation is an improvement to Pollard's Kangaroo method in infrastructures, using distribution results of class numbers as well as information on the congruence class of the divisor class number, and an adaptation that efficiently navigates these torus-shaped infrastructures. Moreover, this is the first time that an efficient "square-root" algorithm has been applied to the infrastructure of a global field of unit rank 2. With…
We present computational results on the divisor class number and the regulator of a cubic function field over a large base field. The underlying method is based on approximations of the Euler product representation of the zeta function of such a field. We give details on the implementation for purely cubic function fields of signatures $(3,1)$ and $(1, 1; 1, 2)$, operating in the ideal class group and infrastructure of the function field, respectively. Our implementation provides numerical evidence of the computational effectiveness of this algorithm. With the exception of special cases, such …
We give a certain method for computations of real regulator on K_1 of elliptic surfaces. We also give an examples of a regulator indecomposable element for an elliptic surface with an arbitrary large p_g.
We establish a connection between motivic cohomology classes over the Siegel threefold and special values of the degree four $L$-function of some cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$. Our computation relies on our previous work [Le15] and on an integral representation of the $L$-function due to Piatetski-Shapiro.
We address the question of computing one selected term of an algebraic power series. In characteristic zero, the best algorithm currently known for computing the $N$th coefficient of an algebraic series uses differential equations and has arithmetic complexity quasi-linear in $\sqrt{N}$. We show that over a prime field of positive characteristic $p$, the complexity can be lowered to $O(\log N)$. The mathematical basis for this dramatic improvement is a classical theorem stating that a formal power series with coefficients in a finite field is algebraic if and only if the sequence of its coeffi…
