We give a general method of deriving statistical limit theorems, such as the central limit theorem and its functional version, in the setting of ergodic measure preserving transformations. This method is applicable in situations where the iterates of discrete time maps display a polynomial decay of correlations.
We prove a fiberwise almost sure invariance principle for random piecewise expanding transformations in one and higher dimensions using recent developments on martingale techniques.
This paper is devoted to study the topological invariance of several non-uniform hyperbolicity conditions of one-dimensional maps. In contrast with the case of maps with only one critical point, it is known that for maps with several critical points the Collet-Eckmann condition is not in itself invariance under topological conjugacy. We show that the Collet-Eckmann condition together with any of several slow recurrence conditions is invariant under topological conjugacy. This extends and gives a new proof of a result by Luzzatto and Wang that also applies to the complex setting.
We show that a strengthened version of the Collet-Eckmann condition for multimodal maps is topologically invariant. In particular, if f is non-uniformly expanding and the critical points are generic with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant measure, then any map g topologically conjugate to f is also non-uniformly expanding.
Bifurcations of the $A_{n}$ type in Arnold's classification, in non-autonomous $p$-periodic difference equations generated by parameter depending families with $p$ maps, are studied. It is proved that the conditions of degeneracy, non-degeneracy and unfolding are invariant relative to cyclic order of compositions for any natural number $n$. The main tool for the proofs is local topological conjugacy. Invariance results are essential to the proper definition of the bifurcations $A_{n}$, and lower codimension bifurcations associated, using all the possible cyclic compositions of the fiber famili…
In their celebrated "Period three implies chaos" paper, Li and Yorke proved that if a continuous interval map f has a period 3 point then there is an uncountable scrambled set S on which f has very complicated dynamics. One question arises naturally: Can this set S be chosen invariant under f? The answer is positive for turbulent maps and negative otherwise. In this note, we shall use symbolic dynamics to achieve our goal. In particular, we obtain that the tent map T(x) = 1 - |2x-1| on [0, 1] has a dense uncountable invariant 1-scrambled set which consists of transitive points.
We prove a quenched almost sure invariance principle for certain classes of random distance expanding dynamical systems which do not necessarily exhibit uniform decay of correlations.
We explore some properties of Lyapunov exponents of measures preserved by smooth maps of the interval, and study the behaviour of the Lyapunov exponents under topological conjugacy.
We establish almost sure invariance principles (ASIP), a strong form of approximation by Brownian motion, for non-stationary time series arising as observations on sequential maps possessing an indifferent fixed point. These transformations are obtained by perturbing the slope in the Pomeau-Manneville map. Quenched ASIP for random compositions of these maps is also obtained.
We show that for almost every map in a transversal one-parameter family of piecewise expanding unimodal maps the Birkhoff sum of suitable observables along the forward orbit of the turning point satisfies the law of iterated logarithm. This result will follow from an almost sure invariance principle for the Birkhoff sum, as a function on the parameter space. Furthermore, we obtain a similar result for general one-parameter families of piecewise expanding maps on the interval.
We obtain the first results on convergence rates in the Prokhorov metric for the weak invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) for deterministic dynamical systems. Our results hold for uniformly expanding/hyperbolic (Axiom A) systems, as well as nonuniformly expanding/hyperbolic systems such as dispersing billiards, Henon-like attractors, Viana maps and intermittent maps. As an application, we obtain convergence rates for deterministic homogenization in multiscale systems.
We consider two classes of piecewise expanding maps $T$ of $[0,1]$: a class of uniformly expanding maps for which the Perron-Frobenius operator has a spectral gap in the space of bounded variation functions, and a class of expanding maps with a neutral fixed point at zero. In both cases, we give a large class of unbounded functions $f$ for which the partial sums of $f\circ T^i$ satisfy an almost sure invariance principle. This class contains piecewise monotonic functions (with a finite number of branches) such that: - For uniformly expanding maps, they are square integrable with respect to the…
We study numerically the $α$- and $ω$-limits of the Newton maps of two of the most elementary families of polynomial transformations on the plane: those with a linear component and those with both components of degree two. Our results are fully consistent with some conjectures we posed in a recent work about the dynamics of Newton maps.
We probe deeper into the Discrete Markus-Yamabe Question for polynomial planar maps and into the normal form for those maps which answer this question in the affirmative. Furthermore, in a symmetric context, we show that the only nonlinear equivariant polynomial maps providing an affirmative answer to the Discrete Markus-Yamabe Question are those possessing Z2 as their group of symmetries. We use this to establish two new tools which give information about the spectrum of a planar polynomial map.
We consider skew-products of quadratic maps over certain Misiurewicz-Thurston maps and study their statistical properties. We prove that, when the coupling function is a polynomial of odd degree, such a system admits two positive Lyapunov exponents almost everywhere and a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure.
In this article, we prove that every unicritical polynomial map that has only rational multipliers is either a power map or a Chebyshev map. This provides some evidence in support of a conjecture by Milnor concerning rational maps whose multipliers are all integers.
The structure of isentropes (i.e. level sets of constant topological entropy) including the monotonicity of entropy, has been studied for polynomial interval maps since the 1980s. We show that isentropes of multimodal polynomial families need not be locally connected and that entropy does in general not depend monotonically on a single critical value.
In this paper we prove existence of matings between a large class of renormalizable cubic polynomials with one fixed critical point and another cubic polynomial having two fixed critical points. The resulting mating is a Newton map. Our result is the first part towards a conjecture by Tan Lei, stating that all (cubic) Newton maps can be described as matings or captures.
The purpose of this paper is to initiate a theory concerning the dynamics of asymptotically holomorphic polynomial-like maps. Our maps arise naturally as deep renormalizations of asymptotically holomorphic extensions of $C^r$ ($r>3$) unimodal maps that are infinitely renormalizable of bounded type. Here we prove a version of the Fatou-Julia-Sullivan theorem and a topological straightening theorem in this setting. In particular, these maps do not have wandering domains and their Julia sets are locally connected.
We give an example of a sequential dynamical system consisting of intermittent-type maps which exhibits loss of memory with a polynomial rate of decay. A uniform bound holds for the upper rate of memory loss. The maps may be chosen in any sequence, and the bound holds for all compositions.
We extend Sullivan's complex a priori bounds to real quadratic polynomials with essentially bounded combinatorics. Combined with the previous results of the first author, this yields complex bounds for all real quadratics. Local connectivity of the corresponding Julia sets follows.
We consider non-singular and Jacobian maps whose components are polynomial in the variable y. We prove that if a map has y-degree one, then it is the composition of a triangular map and a quasi-triangular map. We also prove that non-singular y-quadratic maps are injective if one of the leading functional coefficients does not vanish. Moreover, y-quadratic Jacobian maps are the composition of a quasi-triangular map and 3 triangular maps. Other results are given for wider classes of non-singular maps, considering also injectivity on vertical strips I x R.
We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the realization of mapping schemata as post-critically finite polynomials, or more generally, as post-critically finite polynomial maps from a finite union of copies of the complex numbers {\bf C} to itself which have degree two or more in each copy. As a consequence of these results we prove a transitivity relation between hyperbolic components in parameter space which was conjectured by Milnor.
Given a family $\{ f_λ \}_{λ\in Λ}$ of polynomial maps of degree $d$ where $Λ$ is the set of parameters, a polynomial map $f_{λ_0}$ is called {\it $J$-stable in $Λ$} if there exists a neighborhood of $λ_0$ in $Λ$ such that for any element $λ$ in the neighborhood, there exists a conjugacy between the dynamics on the Julia sets of $f_λ$ and $f_{λ_0}$. The aim of this paper is to show that a polynomial map $f_{λ_0}$ over the field $\mathbb{C}_p$ of $p$-adic complex numbers is $J$-stable in the family of polynomial maps over $\mathbb{C}_p$ if $f_{λ_0}$ is {\it immediately expanding}.
We establish almost sure invariance principles, a strong form of approximation by Brownian motion, for non-stationary time-series arising as observations on dynamical systems. Our examples include observations on sequential expanding maps, perturbed dynamical systems, non-stationary sequences of functions on hyperbolic systems as well as applications to the shrinking target problem in expanding systems.
We consider a space of complex polynomials of degree $n\ge 3$ with $n-1$ distinguished periodic orbits. We prove that the multipliers of these periodic orbits considered as algebraic functions on that space, are algebraically independent over the field of complex numbers.
Explicit formulas are obtained for the number of periodic points and maximum tail length of split polynomial maps over finite fields for affine and projective space. This work includes a detailed analysis of the structure of the directed graph for Chebyshev polynomials of non-prime degree in dimension 1 and the powering map in any dimension. The results are applied to an algorithm for determining the type of a given map through analysis of its cycle statistics modulo primes.
It is well known that for $a>4$, the dynamical behaviors of the logistic map $f_a(x)=ax(1-x)$ on the maximal invariant compact set are "simple" which could be clearly explained by the theories of hyperbolic dynamics and symbolic dynamics. Is it possible that similar phenomena could be observed in general real polynomial maps? In this paper, we study this problem by investigating the real polynomial map $f_a(x)=ag(x)$, where $a$ is a parameter, and $g$ is a real-coefficient polynomial, which has at least two different real zeros or only one real zero.
In this work we will show that the Teichmüller distance for all elements of a certain class of generalized polynomial-like maps (the class of off-critically hyperbolic generalized polynomial-like maps) is actually a distance, as in the case of real polynomials with connected Julia set, as studied by Sullivan. This class contains several important classes of generalized polynomial-like maps, namely: Yoccoz, Lyubich, Sullivan and Fibonacci. In our proof we can not use external arguments (like external classes). Instead we use hyperbolic sets inside the Julia sets of our maps. Those hyperbolic se…
In this paper we show how to apply classical probabilistic tools for partial sums $\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}φ\circτ^j$ generated by a skew product $τ$, built over a sufficiently well mixing base map and a random expanding dynamical system. Under certain regularity assumptions on the observable $φ$, we obtain a central limit theorem (CLT) with rates, a functional CLT, an almost sure invariance principle (ASIP), a moderate deviations principle, several exponential concentration inequalities and Rosenthal type moment estimates for skew products with $α, ϕ$ or $ψ$ mixing base maps and expanding on the aver…
For maps of one complex variable, $f$, given as the sum of a degree $n$ power map and a degree $d$ polynomial, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions that the geometric limit as $n$ approaches infinity of the set of points that remain bounded under iteration by $f$ is the closed unit disk or the unit circle. We also provide a general description, for many cases, of the limiting set.
We provide the existence of new degree growths in the context of polynomial automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^k$: if $k$ is an integer $\geq 3$, then for any $\ell\leq \left[\frac{k-1}{2}\right]$ there exist polynomial automorphisms $f$ of $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $\mathrm{deg}\, f^n\sim n^\ell$. We also give counter-examples in dimension $k\geq 3$ to some classical properties satisfied by polynomial automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$. We provide the existence of new degree growths in the context of birational maps of $\mathbb{P}^k_\mathbb{C}$: assume $k\geq 3$; forall $0\leq\ell\leq k$ there exist bi…
We establish a version of the Pommerenke-Levin-Yoccoz inequality for the modulus of a polynomial-like restriction of a global polynomial and give two applications. First it is shown that if the modulus of a polynomial-like restriction of an arbitrary polynomial is bounded from below then this forces bounded combinatorics. The second application concerns parameter slices of cubic polynomials given by a non-repelling value of a fixed point multiplier. Namely, the intersection of the main cubioid and the multiplier slice lies in the closure of the principal hyperbolic domain, with only possible e…
In this paper, we consider the convergence rate with respect to Wasserstein distance in the invariance principle for deterministic nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, where both discrete time systems and flows are included. Our results apply to uniformly hyperbolic systems and large classes of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems including intermittent maps, Viana maps, finite horizon planar periodic Lorentz gases and others. Furthermore, as a nontrivial application to homogenization problem, we investigate the $\mathcal{W}_2$-convergence rate of a fast-slow discrete deterministic system to a stochast…
Given a rational monomial map, we consider the question of finding a toric variety on which it is algebraically stable. We give conditions for when such variety does or does not exist. We also obtain several precise estimates of the degree sequences of monomial maps on $¶^n$. Finally, we characterize polynomial maps which are algebraically stable on $(¶^1)^n$.
A lot of formal and informal recreational study took place in the fields of Meromorphic Maps, since Mandelbrot popularized the map z <- z^2 + c. An immediate generalization of the Mandelbrot z <-z^n + c also known as the Multibrot family were also studied. In the current paper, general truncated polynomial maps of the form z <- \sum_{p>=2} a_px^p +c are studied. Two fundamental properties of these polynomial maps are hereby presented. One of them is the existence of shape preserving transformations on fractal images, and another one is the existence of embedded Multibrot fractals inside a poly…
We study holomorphic families of polynomial-like maps depending on a parameter s. We prove that the partial sums of largest Lyapunov exponents are plurisubharmonic functions of s. We also study their continuity and introduce the bifurcation locus as the support of bifurcation currents.
This paper continues discussions in the author's previous paper about the Misiurewicz polynomials defined for a family of degree $d \ge 2$ rational maps with an automorphism group containing the cyclic group of order $d$. In particular, we extend the sufficient conditions that the Misiurewicz polynomials are irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$. We also prove that the Misiurewicz polynomials always have an irreducible factor of large degree.
In this paper, we consider a one-parameter family of degree $d\ge 2$ rational maps with an automorphism group containing the cyclic group of order $d$. We construct a polynomial whose roots correspond to parameter values for which the corresponding map is post-critically finite with a certain dynamical portrait. Then we prove that the polynomial is irreducible in certain cases.
We extend and improve the existing characterization of the dynamics of general quadratic real polynomial maps with coefficients that depend on a single parameter $λ$, and generalize this characterization to cubic real polynomial maps, in a consistent theory that is further generalized to real $n$-th degree real polynomial maps. In essence, we give conditions for the stability of the fixed points of any real polynomial map with real fixed points. In order to do this, we have introduced the concept of Canonical Polynomial Maps which are topologically conjugate to any polynomial map of the same d…
Given a family of polynomial-like maps of large topological degree, we relate the presence of Misiurewicz parameters to a growth condition of the postcritical volume. This allows us to generalize to this setting the theory of stability and bifurcation developed by Berteloot, Dupont and the author for endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^k$.
Linked-twist maps are area-preserving, piece-wise diffeomorphisms, defined on a subset of the torus. They are non-uniformly hyperbolic generalisations of the well-known Arnold Cat Map. We show that a class of canonical examples have polynomial decay of correlations for α-Hölder observables, of order 1/n.
We prove the almost sure invariance principle with rate $o(n^{\varepsilon})$ for every $\varepsilon > 0$ for Hölder continuous observables on nonuniformly expanding and nonuniformly hyperbolic transformations with exponential tails. Examples include Gibbs-Markov maps with big images, Axiom A diffeomorphisms, dispersing billiards and a class of logistic and Hénon maps. The best previously proved rate is $O(n^{1/4} (\log n)^{1/2} (\log \log n)^{1/4})$. As a part of our method, we show that nonuniformly expanding transformations are factors of Markov shifts with simple structure and natural metri…
For a class of polynomial maps of one variable with a parabolic fixed points and degrees bigger than $21$, the parabolic renormalization is introduced based on Fatou coordinates and horn maps, and a type of maps which are invariant under the parabolic renormalization is also given. For the small perturbation of these kinds of maps, the near-parabolic renormalization is also introduced based on the first return maps defined on the fundamental regions. As an application, we show the existence of non-renormalizable polynomial maps with degrees bigger than $21$ such that the Julia sets have positi…
We study a map that sends a monic degree n complex polynomial f(x) without multiple roots to the collection of n values of its derivative at the roots of f(x). We give an answer to a question posed by Ju.S. Ilyashenko.
