We explore some properties of Lyapunov exponents of measures preserved by smooth maps of the interval, and study the behaviour of the Lyapunov exponents under topological conjugacy.
Nowadays the Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov dimension have become so widespread and common that they are often used without references to the rigorous definitions or pioneering works. It may lead to a confusion since there are at least two well-known definitions, which are used in computations: the upper bounds of the exponential growth rate of the norms of linearized system solutions (Lyapunov characteristic exponents, LCEs) and the upper bounds of the exponential growth rate of the singular values of the fundamental matrix of linearized system (Lyapunov exponents, LEs). In this work the rel…
Forward invariance of a basin of attraction is often overlooked when using a Lyapunov stability theorem to prove local stability; even if the Lyapunov function decreases monotonically in a neighborhood of an equilibrium, the dynamic may escape from this neighborhood. In this note, we fix this gap by finding a smaller neighborhood that is forward invariant. This helps us to prove local stability more naturally without tracking each solution path. Similarly, we prove a transitivity theorem about basins of attractions without requiring forward invariance. Keywords: Lyapunov function, local stabil…
We provide Lyapunov-like characterizations of boundedness and convergence of non-trivial solutions for a class of systems with unstable invariant sets. Examples of systems to which the results may apply include interconnections of stable subsystems with one-dimensional unstable dynamics or critically stable dynamics. Systems of this type arise in problems of nonlinear output regulation, parameter estimation and adaptive control. In addition to providing boundedness and convergence criteria the results allow to derive domains of initial conditions corresponding to solutions leaving a given neig…
We provide several characterizations of convergence to unstable equilibria in nonlinear systems. Our current contribution is three-fold. First we present simple algebraic conditions for establishing local convergence of non-trivial solutions of nonlinear systems to unstable equilibria. The conditions are based on the earlier work (A.N. Gorban, I.Yu. Tyukin, E. Steur, and H. Nijmeijer, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Vol. 51, No. 3, 2013) and can be viewed as an extension of the Lyapunov's first method in that they apply to systems in which the corresponding Jacobian has one zero eige…
This paper presents numerical methods for computing regions of finite-time invariance (funnels) around solutions of polynomial differential equations. First, we present a method which exactly certifies sufficient conditions for invariance despite relying on approximate trajectories from numerical integration. Our second method relaxes the constraints of the first by sampling in time. In applications, this can recover almost identical funnels but is much faster to compute. In both cases, funnels are verified using Sum-of-Squares programming to search over a family of time-varying polynomial Lya…
We investigate a wide class of two-dimensional hyperbolic systems with singularities, and prove the almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) for the random process generated by sequences of dynamically Hölder observables. The observables could be unbounded, and the process may be non-stationary and need not have linearly growing variances. Our results apply to Anosov diffeomorphisms, Sinai dispersing billiards and their perturbations. The random processes under consideration are related to the fluctuation of Lyapunov exponents, the shrinking target problem, etc.
This paper studies characteristic exponents of flows in relation with the dynamics of flows on flag bundles. The starting point is a flow on a principal bundle with semi-simple group $G$. Projection against the Iwasawa decomposition $G = KAN$ defines an additive cocycle over the flow with values in $\frak{a} = \log A$. Its Lyapunov exponents (limits along trajectories) and Morse exponents (limits along chains) are studied. It is proved a symmetric property of these spectral sets, namely invariance under the Weyl group. It is proved also that these sets are located in certain Weyl chambers, def…
A deep analysis of the Lyapunov exponents, for stationary sequence of matrices going back to Furstenberg, for more general linear cocycles by Ledrappier and generalized to the context of non-linear cocycles by Avila and Viana, gives an invariance principle for invariant measures with vanishing central exponents. In this paper, we give a new criterium formulated in terms of entropy for the invariance principle and in particular, obtain a simpler proof for some of the known invariance principle results. As a byproduct, we study ergodic measures of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms whose cente…
We study how dynamical quantities such as Lyapunov exponents, metric entropy, topological pressure, recurrence rates, and dimension-like characteristics change under a time reparameterization of a dynamical system. These quantities are shown to either remain invariant, transform according to a multiplicative factor or transform through a convoluted dependence that may take the form of an integral over the initial local values. We discuss the significance of these results for the apparent non-invariance of chaos in general relativity and explore applications to the synchronization of equilibriu…
We study the relationship between the Lyapunov exponents of the geodesic flow of a closed negatively curved manifold and the geometry of the manifold. We show that if each periodic orbit of the geodesic flow has exactly one Lyapunov exponent on the unstable bundle then the manifold has constant negative curvature. We also show under a curvature pinching condition that equality of all Lyapunov exponents with respect to volume on the unstable bundle also implies that the manifold has constant negative curvature. We then study the degree to which one can emulate these rigidity theorems for the hy…
In this paper, tools to study forward invariance properties with robustness to dis- turbances, referred to as robust forward invariance, are proposed for hybrid dynamical systems modeled as hybrid inclusions. Hybrid inclusions are given in terms of dif- ferential and difference inclusions with state and disturbance constraints, for whose definition only four objects are required. The proposed robust forward invariance notions allow for the diverse type of solutions to such systems (with and without dis- turbances), including solutions that have persistent flows and jumps, that are Zeno, and th…
In this paper, we study the existence of $n$-dimensional linear stochastic differential equations (SDEs) such that the sign of Lyapunov exponents is changed under an exponentially decaying perturbation. First, we show that the equation with all positive Lyapunov exponents will have $n-1$ linearly independent solutions with negative Lyapunov exponents under the perturbation. Meanwhile, we prove that the equation with all negative Lyapunov exponents will also have solutions with positive Lyapunov exponents under another similar perturbation. Finally, we also show that other three kinds of pertur…
This text is an expanded series of lecture notes based on a 5-hour course given at the workshop entitled "Workshop for young researchers: Groups acting on manifolds" held in Teresópolis, Brazil in June 2016. The course introduced a number of classical tools in smooth ergodic theory -- particularly Lyapunov exponents and metric entropy -- as tools to study rigidity properties of group actions on manifolds. We do not present comprehensive treatment of group actions or general rigidity programs. Rather, we focus on two rigidity results in higher-rank dynamics: the measure rigidity theorem for aff…
Consider a $C^1$ vector field together with an ergodic invariant probability that has $\ell$ nonzero Lyapunov exponents. Using orthonormal moving frames along certain transitive orbits we construct a linear system of $\ell$ differential equations which is a reduced form of Liao's "standard system". We show that the Lyapunov exponents of this linear system coincide with all the nonzero exponents of the given vector field with respect to the given probability. Moreover, we prove that these Lyapunov exponents have a persistence property that implies that a "Liao perturbation" preserves both sign …
We study strange non-chaotic attractors in a class of quasiperiodically forced monotone interval maps known as pinched skew products. We prove that the probability of positive time-N Lyapunov exponents, with respect to the unique physical measure on the attractor, decays exponentially as N goes to infinity. The motivation for this work comes from the study of finite-time Lyapunov exponents as possible early-warning signals of critical transitions in the context of forced dynamics.
Lyapunov exponent is widely used in natural science to find chaotic signal, but its existence is seldom discussed. In the present paper, we consider the problem of whether the set of points at which Lyapunov exponent fails to exist, called the Lyapunov irregular set, has positive Lebesgue measure. The only known example with the Lyapunov irregular set of positive Lebesgue measure is a figure-8 attractor by the work of Ott and Yorke [OY2008], whose key mechanism (homoclinic loop) is easy to be broken by small perturbations. In this paper, we show that surface diffeomorphisms with a robust homoc…
We consider an abstract class of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems with inputs. For this class, the significance of noncoercive Lyapunov functions is analyzed. It is shown that the existence of such Lyapunov functions implies norm-to-integral input-to-state stability. This property in turn is equivalent to input-to-state stability, if the system satisfies certain mild regularity assumptions. For a particular class of linear systems with unbounded admissible input operators, explicit constructions of noncoercive Lyapunov functions are provided. The theory is applied to a heat equation with…
Ridges of the Finite-Size Lyapunov Exponent (FSLE) field have been used as indicators of hyperbolic Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs). A rigorous mathematical link between the FSLE and LCSs, however, has been missing. Here we prove that an FSLE ridge satisfying certain conditions does signal a nearby ridge of some Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) field, which in turn indicates a hyperbolic LCS under further conditions. Other FSLE ridges violating our conditions, however, are seen to be false positives for LCSs. We also find further limitations of the FSLE in Lagrangian coherence detect…
