We provide Lyapunov-like characterizations of boundedness and convergence of non-trivial solutions for a class of systems with unstable invariant sets. Examples of systems to which the results may apply include interconnections of stable subsystems with one-dimensional unstable dynamics or critically stable dynamics. Systems of this type arise in problems of nonlinear output regulation, parameter estimation and adaptive control.
In addition to providing boundedness and convergence criteria the results allow to derive domains of initial conditions corresponding to solutions leaving a given neighborhood of the origin at least once. In contrast to other works addressing convergence issues in unstable systems, our results require neither input-output characterizations for the stable part nor estimates of convergence rates. The results are illustrated with examples, including the analysis of phase synchronization of neural oscillators with heterogenous coupling.
Despite the invertible setting, Anosov endomorphisms may have infinitely many unstable directions. Here we prove, under transitivity assumption, that an Anosov endomorphism on a closed manifold $M,$ is either special (that is, every $x \in M$ has only one unstable direction) or for a typical point in $M$ there are infinitely many unstable directions. Other result of this work is the semi rigidity of the unstable Lyapunov exponent of a $C^{1+α}$ codimension one Anosov endomorphism and $C^1$ close to a linear endomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^n$ for $(n \geq 2).$ In the appendix we give a proof for er…
We provide several characterizations of convergence to unstable equilibria in nonlinear systems. Our current contribution is three-fold. First we present simple algebraic conditions for establishing local convergence of non-trivial solutions of nonlinear systems to unstable equilibria. The conditions are based on the earlier work (A.N. Gorban, I.Yu. Tyukin, E. Steur, and H. Nijmeijer, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Vol. 51, No. 3, 2013) and can be viewed as an extension of the Lyapunov's first method in that they apply to systems in which the corresponding Jacobian has one zero eige…
For a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set, we effect a multifractal analysis, i.e., decompose the set of non wandering points on the unstable manifold into level sets of an unstable Lyapunov exponent, and give a partial description of the Lyapunov spectrum which encodes this decomposition. We derive a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets in terms of the entropy and unstable Lyapunov exponent of invariant probability measures, and show the conti…
We prove that for every smooth compact manifold $M$ and any $r \ge 1$, whenever there is an open domain in $\mathrm{Diff}^r(M)$ exhibiting a persistent homoclinic tangency related to a basic set with a sectionally dissipative periodic saddle, topologically generic diffeomorphisms in this domain have Lyapunov unstable Milnor attractors. This implies, in particular, that the instability of Milnor attractors is locally topologically generic in $C^1$ if $\mathrm{dim}\,M \ge 3$ and in $C^2$ if $\mathrm{dim}\,M = 2$. Moreover, it follows from the results of C. Bonatti, L. J. Díaz and E. R. Pujals th…
This paper develops a new approach to the estimation of the degree of boundedness or stability of multidimensional nonlinear systems with time-dependent nonperiodic coefficients-an essential task in various engineering and natural science applications. Known approaches to assessing the stability of such systems rest on the utility of Lyapunov functions and Lyapunov first approximation methodologies, typically providing conservative and computationally elaborate criteria for multidimensional systems of this category. Adequate criteria of boundedness of solutions to nonhomogeneous systems of thi…
A new diffusion mechanism from the neighborhood of elliptic equilibria for Hamiltonian flows in three or more degrees of freedom is introduced. We thus obtain explicit real entire Hamiltonians on $\R^{2d}$, $d\geq 4$, that have a Lyapunov unstable elliptic equilibrium with an arbitrary chosen frequency vector whose coordinates are not all of the same sign. For non-resonant frequency vectors, our examples all have divergent Birkhoff normal form at the equilibrium. On $\R^4$, we give explicit examples of real entire Hamiltonians having an equilibrium with an arbitrary chosen non-resonant frequen…
Given an arbitrary continuous flow on a manifold M, let CMin be the set of its compact minimal sets, endowed with the Hausdorff metric, and S the subset of those that are Lyapunov stable. A topological characterization of the interior of S, the set of Lyapunov stable compact minimal sets that are away from Lyapunov unstable ones is given, together with a description of the dynamics around it. In particular, int S is locally a Peano continuum (Peano curve) and each of its countably many connected components admits a complete geodesic metric. This result establishes unexpected connections betwee…
We derive a saturated feedback control, which locally stabilizes a linear reaction-diffusion equation. In contrast to most other works on this topic, we do not assume the Lyapunov stability of the uncontrolled system and consider general unstable systems. Using Lyapunov methods, we provide estimates for the region of attraction for the closed-loop system, given in terms of linear and bilinear matrix inequalities. We show that our results can be used with distributed as well as scalar boundary control, and with different types of saturations. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrate…
We propose a technique for the design and analysis of adaptation algorithms in dynamical systems. The technique applies both to systems with conventional Lyapunov-stable target dynamics and to ones of which the desired dynamics around the target set is nonequilibrium and in general unstable in the Lyapunov sense. Mathematical models of uncertainties are allowed to be nonlinearly parametrized, smooth, and monotonic functions of linear functionals of the parameters. We illustrate with applications how the proposed method leads to control algorithms. In particular we show that the mere existence …
We study the phase space structure and the orbital diffusion from the vicinity of the vertical Lyapunov periodic orbits around the unstable Lagrangian points L1,2 in a 3D barred galaxy model. By perturbing the initial conditions of these periodic orbits, we detected the following five types of orbital structures in the 4D spaces of section: (i) Ring-like structures, sticky for large time intervals to the unstable invariant manifolds of the simple and double unstable vertical Lyapunov periodic orbits. (ii) 2D tori belonging to quasi-periodic orbits around stable periodic orbits existing in the …

In the context of mechanical Lagrangian dynamics, we prove a new Lyapunov instability criterion for a non strict local minimum equilibrium point of a smooth potential where the sufficient condition for instability is the existence of a smooth solution of a certain linear PDE derived from the mechanical Lagrangian governing the dynamics. In the presence of a magnetostatic field, we also give an additional sufficient condition for the motion of a charged particle to be Lyapunov unstable.
We found a dichotomy involving the unstable Lyapunov exponent of a special Anosov endomorphism of the torus induced by the conjugacy with the linearization. In fact, either every unstable leaf meets on a set of zero measure the set for which is defined such unstable Lyapunov exponent or the endomorphims is smoothly conjugated with its linearization. Also we are able to characterize the absolute continuity of the intermediate foliation for a class of volume preserving special Anosov endomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^3.$
We prove that for linear, discrete, time-varying, deterministic system (perfect model) with noisy outputs, the Riccati transformation in the Kalman filter asymptotically bounds the rank of the forecast and the analysis error covariance matrices to be less than or equal to the number of non-negative Lyapunov exponents of the system. Further, the support of these error covariance matrices is shown to be confined to the space spanned by the unstable-neutral backward Lyapunov vectors, providing the theoretical justification for the methodology of the algorithms that perform assimilation only in th…
Bochi-Katok-Rodriguez Hertz proposed in [BKH21] a program on the flexibility of Lyapunov exponents for conservative Anosov diffeomorphisms, and obtained partial results in this direction. For conservative Anosov diffeomorphisms with strong hyperbolic properties we establish extended flexibility results for their Lyapunov exponents. We give examples of Anosov diffeomorphisms with the strong unstable exponent larger than the strong unstable exponent of the linear part. We also give examples of derived from Anosov diffeomorphisms with the metric entropy entropy larger than the entropy of the line…
We consider locally minimizing measures for the conservative twist maps of the $d$-dimensional annulus or for the Tonelli Hamiltonian flows defined on a cotangent bundle $T^*M$. For weakly hyperbolic such measures (i.e. measures with no zero Lyapunov exponents), we prove that the mean distance/angle between the stable and the unstable Oseledet's bundles gives an upper bound of the sum of the positive Lyapunov exponents and a lower bound of the smallest positive Lyapunov exponent. Some more precise results are proved too.
We consider a large class of 2D area-preserving diffeomorphisms that are not uniformly hyperbolic but have strong hyperbolicity properties on large regions of their phase spaces. A prime example is the Standard map. Lower bounds for Lyapunov exponents of such systems are very hard to estimate, due to the potential switching of "stable" and "unstable" directions. This paper shows that with the addition of (very) small random perturbations, one obtains with relative ease Lyapunov exponents reflecting the geometry of the deterministic maps.
We consider a similar type of scenario for the disappearance of uniform of hyperbolicity as in Bjerklöv and Saprykina (2008, Nonlinearity 21), where it was proved that the minimum distance between invariant stable and unstable bundles has a linear power law dependence on parameters. In this scenario we prove that the Lyapunov exponent is sharp $\frac12$-Hölder continuous. In particular, we show that the Lyapunov exponent of Schrödinger cocycles with a potential having a unique non-degenerate minimum, is sharp $\frac12$-Hölder continuous below the lowest energy of the spectrum, in the large cou…
The purpose of this paper is to present an example of a C1 (in the Fréchet sense) discrete dynamical system in a infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space for which the origin is an exponentially asymptotically stable fixed point, but such that its derivative at the origin has spectral radius larger than unity, and this means that the origin is unstable in the sense of Lyapunov for the linearized system. The possible existence or not of an example of this kind has been an open question until now, to our knowledge. The construction is based on a classical example in Operator Theory due to Ka…
For any $C^1$ diffeomorphism on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold that admits an ergodic measure with positive entropy, a lower bound of the Hausdorff dimension for the local stable and unstable sets is given in terms of the measure-theoretic entropy and the maximal Lyapunov exponent. The mainline of our approach to this result is under the settings of topological dynamical systems, which is also applicable to infinite dimensional $C^1$ dynamical systems.
Invariant manifolds are fundamental tools for describing and understanding nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, we present a theory of stable and unstable manifolds for infinite dimensional random dynamical systems generated by a class of stochastic partial differential equations. We first show the existence of Lipschitz continuous stable and unstable manifolds by the Lyapunov-Perron's method. Then, we prove the smoothness of these invariant manifolds.
We develop a thermodynamic formalism for a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. For any $t\in\mathbb R$ we prove the existence of an invariant Borel probability measure which minimizes the free energy associated with a non continuous geometric potential $-t\log J^u$, where $J^u$ denotes the Jacobian in the unstable direction. Under a mild condition, we show that any accumulation point of these measures as $t\to+\infty$ minimizes the unstable Lyapunov exponent. …
The aim of this paper is to introduce a class of Hamiltonian autonomous systems in dimension 4 which are completely integrable and their dynamics is described in all details. They have an equilibrium point which is stable for some rare elements of the class, and unstable in most cases. Anyhow, it is linearly stable (all orbits of the linearized system are bounded) and no motion is asymptotic in the past, namely no non-constant solution has the equilibrium as limit point as time goes to minus infinity. In the unstable cases, there is a sequence of initial data which converges to the equilibrium…
We show that the time-1 map of an Anosov flow, whose strong-unstable foliation is $C^2$ smooth and minimal, is $C^2$ close to a diffeomorphism having positive central Lyapunov exponent Lebesgue almost everywhere and a unique physical measure with full basin, which is $C^r$ stably ergodic. Our method is perturbative and does not rely on preservation of a smooth measure.
We show that for a class of $C^2$ quasiperiodic potentials and for any Diophantine frequency, the Lyapunov exponents of the corresponding Schrödinger cocycles are uniformly positive and weak Hölder continuous as function of energies. As a corollary, we also obtain that the corresponding integrated density of states (IDS) is weak Hölder continous. Our approach is of purely dynamical systems, which depends on a detailed analysis of asymptotic stable and unstable directions. We also apply it to more general $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ cocycles, which in turn can be applied to get uniform positivit…
This note presents a non-rigorous study of the linear response for an SRB (or `natural physical') measure $ρ$ of a diffeomorphism $f$ in the presence of tangencies of the stable and unstable manifolds of $ρ$. We propose that generically, if $ρ$ has no zero Lyapunov exponent, if its stable dimension is sufficiently large (greater than 1/2 or perhaps 3/2) and if it is exponentially mixing in a suitable sense, then the following formal expression for the first derivative of $ρ(ϕ)$ with respect to $f$ along $X$ is convergent: $$ Ψ(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty z^n\intρ(dx)\,X(x)\cdot\nabla_x(ϕ\circ f^n)\qq…
The set of transverse homoclinic intersections for a saddle-focus equilibrium in the planar equilateral restricted four-body problem admit certain simple homoclinic orbits which form the skeleton of the complete homoclinic intersection -- or homoclinic web. In the present work, the planar restricted four-body problem is viewed as an invariant subsystem of the spatial problem, and the influence of this planar homoclinic skeleton on the spatial dynamics is studied from a numerical point of view. Starting from the vertical Lyapunov families emanating from saddle focus equilibria, we compute the s…
