In this paper we deal with symplectic Lie algebras. All symplectic structures are determined for dimension four and the corresponding Lie algebras are classified up to equivalence. Symplectic four dimensional Lie algebras are described either as solutions of the cotangent extension problem or as symplectic double extension of $\Bbb RR^2$ by $\Bbb RR$. The difference in the choice of a certain model lies on the existence or not of a lagrangian ideal. Moreover all extensions of a two dimensional Lie algebra are determined, and so all solutions (up to equivalence) of the cotangent extension problem are given in dimension two. By studying the adjoint representation we generalize to higher dimensions finding obstructions to the existence of symplectic forms. Finally, as an appendix we compute the authomorphisms of four dimensional symplectic Lie algebras and the cohomology over $\Bbb RR$ of the solvable real four dimensional Lie algebras.
A symplectic Lie group is a Lie group with a left-invariant symplectic form. Its Lie algebra structure is that of a quasi-Frobenius Lie algebra. In this note, we identify the groupoid analogue of a symplectic Lie group. We call the aforementioned structure a \textit{$t$-symplectic Lie groupoid}; the "$t$" is motivated by the fact that each target fiber of a $t$-symplectic Lie groupoid is a symplectic manifold. For a Lie groupoid $\mathcal{G}\rightrightarrows M$, we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between quasi-Frobenius Lie algebroid structures on $A\mathcal{G}$ (the associated …
Let $(G,Ω)$ be a symplectic Lie group, i.e, a Lie group endowed with a left invariant symplectic form. If $\G$ is the Lie algebra of $G$ then we call $(\G,ω=\Om(e))$ a symplectic Lie algebra. The product $\bullet$ on $\G$ defined by $3ω\left(x\bullet y,z\right)=ω\left([x,y],z\right)+ω\left([x,z],y\right)$ extends to a left invariant connection $\na$ on $G$ which is torsion free and symplectic ($\na\Om=0)$. When $\na$ has vanishing curvature, we call $(G,Ω)$ a flat symplectic Lie group and $(\G,\om)$ a flat symplectic Lie algebra. In this paper, we study flat symplectic Lie groups. We start by …
Every symplectic Lie algebra with degenerate (including non-abelian nilpotent symplectic Lie algebras) has the structure of a quadratic extension. We give a standard model and describe the equivalence classes on the level of corresponding quadratic cohomology sets. Finally, we give a scheme to classify the isomorphism classes of symplectic Lie algebras with degenerate center. We also give a classification scheme for nilpotent symplectic Lie algebras and compute a complete list of all 6-dimensional nilpotent symplectic Lie algebras, which removes some little inaccuracies in an older list.
Every metric symplectic Lie algebra has the structure of a quadratic extension. We give a standard model and describe the equivalence classes on the level of corresponding quadratic cohomology sets. Finally, we give a scheme to classify the isomorphism classes of metric symplectic Lie algebras and give a complete list of all these Lie algebras in special cases.
$k$-symplectic manifolds are a convenient framework to study classical field theories and they are a generalization of polarized symplectic manifolds. This paper focus on the existence and the properties of left invariant $k$-symplectic structures on Lie groups having a bi-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric. We show that compact semi-simple Lie groups and a large class of Lie groups having a bi-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric does not carry any left invariant $k$-symplectic structure. This class contains the oscillator Lie groups which are the only solvable non abelian Lie groups having a b…
Groupoids are mathematical structures able to describe symmetry properties more general than those described by groups. They were introduced (and named) by H. Brandt in 1926. Around 1950, Charles Ehresmann used groupoids with additional structures (topological and differentiable) as essential tools in topology and differential geometry. In recent years, Mickael Karasev, Alan Weinstein and Stanisław Zakrzewski independently discovered that symplectic groupoids can be used for the construction of noncommutative deformations of the algebra of smooth functions on a manifold, with potential applica…
The main aim of this paper is the description of a large class of lattices in some nilpotent Lie groups, sometimes filiformes, carrying a flat left invariant linear connection anf often a left invariant symplectic form. As a consequence we obtain an infinity of, non homeomorphic, compact affine or symplectic manifolds. We review some new facts about the geometry of compact symplectic nilmanifolds and we describe symplectic reduction for these manifolds. For the Heisenberg Lie group, defined over a local associative and commutative finite dimensional real algebra, a necessary and suffisant cond…
In this paper, we will study compatible triples on Lie algebroids. Using a suitable decomposition for a Lie algebroid, we construct an integrable generalized distribution on the base manifold. As a result, the symplectic form on the Lie algebroid induces a symplectic form on each integral submanifold of the distribution. The induced Poisson structure on the base manifold can be represented by means of the induced Poisson structures on the integral submanifolds. Moreover, for any compatible triple with invariant metric and admissible almost complex structure, we show that the bracket annihilate…
We study the geometry of a family of Lie groups, which contained the classical affine Lie groups, endowed with an exact left invariant symplectic form. We show that this family is closed by symplectic reduction and symplectic double extension in the sense of Dardié and Medina. We prouve also that these groups are endowed with two transverse left invariant Lagrangian (resp. Symplectic) foliations. This implies that these groups admit a left invariant torsion free symplectic connection.
We study the existence of lattices in almost abelian Lie groups that admit left invariant locally conformal Kähler or locally conformal symplectic structures in order to obtain compact solvmanifolds equipped with these geometric structures. In the former case, we show that such lattices exist only in dimension $4$, while in the latter case we provide examples of such Lie groups admitting lattices in any even dimension.
This thesis treats two main topics: calibrated symplectic foliations, and local Lie groupoids. Calibrated symplectic foliations are one possible generalization of taut foliations of 3-manifolds to higher dimensions. Their study has been popular in recent years, and we collect several interesting results. We then show how de Rham's theory of currents, and Sullivan's theory of structure currents, can be applied in trying to understand the calibratability of symplectic foliations. Our study of local Lie groupoids begins with their definition and an exploration of some of their basic properties. N…
In this work we deal with left invariant complex and symplectic structures on simply connected four dimensional solvable real Lie groups. We search the general form of such structures, when they exist and we make use of this information to determine all left invariant Kaehler structures. Finally, as an appendix we compute explicitly the real cohomology of the corresponding Lie algebras.
We define an n-plectic structure as a commutative and torsionless Lie Rinehart pair, together with a distinguished cocycle from its Chevalley-Eilenberg complex. This 'n-plectic cocycle' gives rise to an extension of the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex by so called symplectic tensors. The cohomology of this extension generalizes Hamiltonian functions and vector fields to tensors and cotensors in a range of degrees, up to certain coboundaries and has the structure of a Lie oo-algebra. Finally we show, that momentum maps appear in this context just as weak Lie oo-morphisms from an arbitrary Lie oo-al…
We describe the structure of the Lie groups endowed with a left-invariant symplectic form, called symplectic Lie groups, in terms of semi-direct products of Lie groups, symplectic reduction and principal bundles with affine fiber. This description is particularly nice if the group is Hamiltonian, that is, if the left canonical action of the group on itself is Hamiltonian. The principal tool used for our description is a canonical affine structure associated with the symplectic form. We also characterize the Hamiltonian symplectic Lie groups among the connected symplectic Lie groups. We special…
A complex symplectic structure on a Lie algebra $\lie h$ is an integrable complex structure $J$ with a closed non-degenerate $(2,0)$-form. It is determined by $J$ and the real part $Ω$ of the $(2,0)$-form. Suppose that $\lie h$ is a semi-direct product $\lie g\ltimes V$, and both $\lie g$ and $V$ are Lagrangian with respect to $Ω$ and totally real with respect to $J$. This note shows that $\lie g\ltimes V$ is its own weak mirror image in the sense that the associated differential Gerstenhaber algebras controlling the extended deformations of $Ω$ and $J$ are isomorphic. The geometry of $(Ω, J)$…
We develop the structure theory of symplectic Lie groups based on the study of their isotropic normal subgroups. The article consists of three main parts. In the first part we show that every symplectic Lie group admits a sequence of subsequent symplectic reductions to a unique irreducible symplectic Lie group. The second part concerns the symplectic geometry of cotangent symplectic Lie groups and the theory of Lagrangian extensions of flat Lie groups. In the third part of the article we analyze the existence problem for Lagrangian normal subgroups in nilpotent symplectic Lie groups.
In the present paper we study six dimensional solvable Lie algebras with special emphasis on those admitting a symplectic structure. We list all the symplectic structures that they admit and we compute their Betti numbers finding some properties about the codimension of the nilradical. Next, we consider the conjecture of Guan about step of nilpotency of a symplectic solvmanifold finding that it is true for all six dimensional unimodular solvable Lie algebras. Finally, we consider some cohomologies for symplectic manifolds introduced by Tseng and Yau in the context of symplectic Hogde theory an…
In this paper we exhibit a family of flat left invariant affine structures on the double Lie group of the oscillator Lie group of dimension 4, associated to each solution of classical Yang-Baxter equation given by Boucetta and Medina. On the other hand, using Koszul's method, we prove the existence of an immersion of Lie groups between the group of affine transformations of a flat affine and simply connected manifold and the classical group of affine transformations of $\mathbb{R}^n$. In the last section, for each flat left invariant affine symplectic connection on the group of affine transfor…
We give a new characterization of flat affine manifolds in terms of an action of the Lie algebra of classical infinitesimal affine transformations on the bundle of linear frames. We characterize flat affine symplectic Lie groups using symplectic étale affine representations and as a consequence of this, we show that a flat affine symplectic Lie group with bi-invariant symplectic connection contains a nontrivial one parameter subgroup formed by central translations. We give two methods for constructing flat affine symplectic Lie groups, thus obtaining all those having bi-invariant symplectic co…
We study quadratic Lie algebras over a field K of null characteristic which admit, at the same time, a symplectic structure. We see that if K is algebraically closed every such Lie algebra may be constructed as the T*-extension of a nilpotent algebra admitting an invertiblederivation and also as the double extension of another quadratic symplectic Lie algebra by the one-dimensional Lie algebra. Finally, we prove that every symplectic quadratic Lie algebra is a special symplectic Manin algebra and we give an inductive classification in terms of symplectic quadratic double extensions.
We study deformations of symplectic structures on a smooth manifold $M$ via the quasi-Poisson theory. By a fact, we can deform a given symplectic structure $ω$ to a new symplectic structure $ω_t$ parametrized by some element $t$ in $Λ^2\mathfrak{g}$, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is the Lie algebra of a Lie group $G$. Moreover, we can get a lot of concrete examples for the deformations of symplectic structures on the complex projective space and the complex Grassmannian.
We classify solvable Lie groups admitting left invariant symplectic half-flat structure. When the Lie group has a compact quotient by a lattice, we show that these structures provide solutions of supersymmetric equations of type IIA.
In this work we study the problem of existence of symplectic structures on free nilpotent Lie algebras. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for even dimensional ones. The one dimensional central extension for odd dimensional free nilpotent Lie algebras is also considered.
We use the techniques of integration of Poisson manifolds into symplectic Lie groupoids to build symplectic resolutions (= desingularizations) of the closure of a symplectic leaf. More generally, we show how Lie groupoids can be used to lift singularities, in particular when one imposes a compatibility condition with an additional structure given by a multi-vector field.
We investigate Lie algebras endowed with a complex symplectic structure and develop a method, called \emph{complex symplectic oxidation}, to construct certain complex symplectic Lie algebras of dimension $4n+4$ from those of dimension $4n$. We specialize this construction to the nilpotent case and apply complex symplectic oxidation to classify eight-dimensional nilpotent complex symplectic Lie algebras.
$k$-Para-Kähler Lie algebras are a generalization of para-Kähler Lie algebras $(k=1)$ and constitute a subclass of $k$-symplectic Lie algebras. In this paper, we show that the characterization of para-Kähler Lie algebras as left symmetric bialgebras can be generalized to $k$-para-Kähler Lie algebras leading to the introduction of two new structures which are different but both generalize the notion of left symmetric algebra. This permits also the introduction of generalized $S$-matrices. We determine then all the $k$-symplectic Lie algebras of dimension $(k+1)$ and all the six dimensional 2-pa…
We study left invariant contact forms and left invariant symplectic forms on Lie groups. We give the classification of all symplectic structures on nilpotent Lie algebras up the dimension 6.
This article addresses the problem of developing an extension of the Marsden- Weinstein reduction process to symplectic Lie algebroids, and in particular to the case of the symplectic cover of a fiberwise linear Poisson structure, whose reduction process is the analogue to cotangent bundle reduction in the context of Lie algebroids.
Several types of generically-nondegenerate Poisson structures can be effectively studied as symplectic structures on naturally associated Lie algebroids. Relevant examples of this phenomenon include log-, elliptic, $b^k$-, scattering and elliptic-log Poisson structures. In this paper we discuss topological obstructions to the existence of such Poisson structures, obtained through the characteristic classes of their associated symplectic Lie algebroids. In particular we obtain the full obstructions for surfaces to carry such Poisson structures.
The aim of this paper is to study the natural action of the real symplectic group, $\operatorname{Sp}(4, \mathbb{R})$, on the algebraic set of $4$-dimensional Lie algebras admitting symplectic structures and to give a complete classification of orbit closures. We present some applications of such classification to the study of the Ricci curvature of left-invariant almost Kähler structures on four dimensional Lie groups.
We study symplectic (contact) structures on nilmanifolds that correspond to the filiform Lie algebras - nilpotent Lie algebras of the maximal length of the descending central sequence. We give a complete classification of filiform Lie algebras that possess a basis e_1, ..., e_n, [e_i,e_j]=c_{ij}e_{i{+}j} (N-graded Lie algebras). In particular we describe the spaces of symplectic cohomology classes for all even-dimensional algebras of the list. It is proved that a symplectic filiform Lie algebra is a filtered deformation of some N-graded symplectic filiform Lie algebra. But this condition is no…
In this review paper, we present several results on central extensions of the Lie algebra of symplectic (Hamiltonian) vector fields, and compare them to similar results for the Lie algebra of (exact) divergence free vector fields. In particular, we comment on universal central extensions and integrability to the group level.
Symplectic manifolds which are homogeneous spaces of Poisson-Lie groups are studied in this paper. We show that these spaces are, under certain assumptions, covering spaces of dressing orbits of the Poisson-Lie groups which act on them. The effect of the Poisson induction procedure on such spaces is also examined, thus leading to an interesting generalization of the notion of homogeneous space. Some examples of homogeneous spaces of Poisson-Lie groups are discussed in the light of the previous results.
In this work we introduce an obstruction for the existence of symplectic structures on nilpotent Lie algebras. Indeed, a necessary condition is presented in terms of the cohomology of the Lie algebra. Using this obstruction we obtain both positive and negative results on the existence of symplectic structures on a large family of nilpotent Lie algebras. Namely the family of nilradicals of minimal parabolic subalgebras associated to the real split Lie algebra of classical complex simple Lie algebras.
We analyze symplectic forms on six dimensional real solvable and non-nilpotent Lie algebras. More precisely, we obtain all those algebras endowed with a symplectic form that decompose as the direct sum of two ideals or are indecomposable solvable algebras with a four dimensional nilradical.
In this paper we consider symplectic and contact Lie algebras. We define contactization and symplectization procedures and describe its main properties. We also give classification of such algebras in dimensions 3 and 4. The classification in dimension~4 is closely connected with normal forms of nondegenerate elliptic equations of the second order on two-dimensional surfaces with transitive symmetry group in first jets. We point out this connection and discuss normal forms.
We describe the reduction procedure for a symplectic Lie algebroid by a Lie subalgebroid and a symmetry Lie group. Moreover, given an invariant Hamiltonian function we obtain the corresponding reduced Hamiltonian dynamics. Several examples illustrate the generality of the theory.
We introduce symplectic structures on "Lie pairs" of (real or complex) algebroids as studied by Chen, Stienon and the second author (From Atiyah classes to homotopy Leibniz algebras, arXiv:1204.1075), encompassing homogeneous symplectic spaces, symplectic manifolds with a $\mathfrak g$-action and holomorphic symplectic manifolds. We show that to each such symplectic Lie pair are associated Rozansky-Witten-type invariants of three-manifolds and knots, given respectively by weight systems on trivalent and chord diagrams.
We study Lie algebras of type I, that is, a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ where all the eigenvalues of the operator ad$_X$ are imaginary for all $X\in \mathfrak{g}$. We prove that the Morse-Novikov cohomology of a Lie algebra of type I is trivial for any closed $1$-form. We focus on locally conformal symplectic structures (LCS) on Lie algebras of type I. In particular we show that for a Lie algebra of type I any LCS structure is of the first kind. We also exhibit lattices for some $6$-dimensional Lie groups of type I admitting left invariant LCS structures in order to produce compact solvmanifold…
A special symplectic Lie group is a triple $(G,ω,\nabla)$ such that $G$ is a finite-dimensional real Lie group and $ω$ is a left invariant symplectic form on $G$ which is parallel with respect to a left invariant affine structure $\nabla$. In this paper starting from a special symplectic Lie group we show how to ``deform" the standard Lie group structure on the (co)tangent bundle through the left invariant affine structure $\nabla$ such that the resulting Lie group admits families of left invariant hypersymplectic structures and thus becomes a hypersymplectic Lie group. We consider the affine …
The $k$-symplectic structures appear in the geometric study of the partial differential equations of classical field theories. Meanwhile, we present a new application of the $k$-symplectic structures to investigate a type of systems of first-order ordinary differential equations, the $k$-symplectic Lie systems. In particular, we analyse the properties, e.g. the superposition rules, of a new example of $k$-symplectic Lie system which occurs in the analysis of diffusion equations.
We consider canonical symplectic structure on the moduli space of flat ${\g}$-connections on a Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points. For ${\g}$ being a semisimple Lie algebra we obtain an explicit efficient formula for this symplectic form and prove that it may be represented as a sum of $n$ copies of Kirillov symplectic form on the orbit of dressing transformations in the Poisson-Lie group $G^{*}$ and $g$ copies of the symplectic structure on the Heisenberg double of the Poisson-Lie group $G$ (the pair ($G,G^{*}$) corresponds to the Lie algebra ${\g}$).
We show that the leaves of an LA-groupoid which pass through the unit manifold are, modulo a connectedness issue, Lie groupoids. We illustrate this phenomenon by considering the cotangent Lie algebroids of Poisson groupoids thus obtaining an interesting class of symplectic groupoids coming from their symplectic foliations. In particular, we show that for a (strict) Lie 2-group the coadjoint orbits of the units in the dual of its Lie 2-algebra are symplectic groupoids, meaning that the classical Kostant-Kirillov-Souriau symplectic forms on these special coadjoint orbits are multiplicative.
There exist three main approaches to reduction associated to canonical Lie group actions on a symplectic manifold, namely, foliation reduction, introduced by Cartan, Marsden-Weinstein reduction, and optimal reduction, introduced by the authors. When the action is free, proper, and admits a momentum map these three approaches coincide. The goal of this paper is to study the general case of a symplectic action that does not admit a momentum map and one needs to use its natural generalization, a cylinder valued momentum map introduced by Condevaux, Dazord, and Molino. In this case it will be show…
A Lie system is a system of first-order ordinary differential equations describing the integral curves of a $t$-dependent vector field taking values in a finite-dimensional real Lie algebra of vector fields: a so-called Vessiot-Guldberg Lie algebra. We suggest the definition of a particular class of Lie systems, the $k$-symplectic Lie systems, admitting a Vessiot-Guldberg Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields with respect to the presymplectic forms of a $k$-symplectic structure. We devise new $k$-symplectic geometric methods to study their superposition rules, time independent constants of …
By considering suitable Poisson groupoids, we develop an approach to obtain Lie group structures on (subgroups of) the Poisson diffeomorphism groups of various classes of Poisson manifolds. As applications, we show that the Poisson diffeomorphism groups of (normal-crossing) log-symplectic, elliptic symplectic, scattering-symplectic and cosymplectic manifolds are regular infinite-dimensional Lie groups.
We provide an alternative method for obtaining of compatible Poisson structures on Lie groups by means of the adjoint representations of Lie algebras. In this way, we calculate some compatible Poisson structures on four dimensional and nilpotent six dimensional symplectic real Lie groups. Then using Magri-Morosi's theorem we obtain new bi-Hamiltonian systems with four dimensional and nilpotent six dimensional symplectic real Lie groups as phase spaces.
We classify the finite type (in the sense of E. Cartan theory of prolongations) subalgebras $\mathfrak{h}\subset\mathfrak{sp}(V)$, where $V$ is the symplectic 4-dimensional space, and show that they satisfy $\mathfrak{h}^{(k)}=0$ for all $k>0$. Using this result, we reduce the problem of classification of graded transitive finite-dimensional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ of symplectic vector fields on $V$ to the description of graded transitive finite-dimensional subalgebras of the full prolongations $\mathfrak{p}_1^{(\infty)}$ and $\mathfrak{p}_2^{(\infty)}$, where $\mathfrak{p}_1$ and $\mathfr…
We show how to reduce, under certain regularities conditions, a Poisson-Nijenhuis Lie algebroid to a symplectic-Nijenhuis Lie algebroid with nondegenerate Nijenhuis tensor. We generalize the work done by Magri and Morosi for the reduction of Poisson-Nijenhuis manifolds. The choice of the more general framework of Lie algebroids is motivated by the geometrical study of some reduced bi-Hamiltonian systems. An explicit example of reduction of a Poisson-Nijenhuis Lie algebroid is also provided.
