In this work we deal with left invariant complex and symplectic structures on simply connected four dimensional solvable real Lie groups. We search the general form of such structures, when they exist and we make use of this information to determine all left invariant Kaehler structures. Finally, as an appendix we compute explicitly the real cohomology of the corresponding Lie algebras.
Let $M$ be a projective toric manifold. We prove two results concerning respectively Kaehler-Einstein submanifolds of M and symplectic embeddings of the standard euclidean ball in M. Both results use the well-known fact that M contains an open dense subset biholomorphic to C^n.
In the author's previous joint work with Hans-Joachim Hein, a mass formula for asymptotically locally Euclidean (ALE) Kaehler manifolds was proved, assuming only relatively weak fall-off conditions on the metric. However, the case of real dimension 4 presented technical difficulties that led us to require fall-off conditions in this special dimension that are stronger than the Chrusciel fall-off conditions that sufficed in higher dimensions. The present article, however, shows that techniques of $4$-dimensional symplectic geometry can be used to obtain all the major results of the previous pap…
We apply the results from the article Cahen, Schwachhöfer: Special symplectic connections, to the case of Bochner-Kaehler metrics. We obtain a (local) classification of these based on the orbit types of the adjoint action in $su(n,1)$. The relation between Sasaki and Bochner-Kaehler metrics in cone and transveral metrics constructions is discussed. The connection of the special symplectic and Weyl connections is outlined. The duality between the Ricci-type and Bochner-Kaehler metrics is shown.
In this paper I construct, using off the shelf components, a compact symplectic manifold with a non-trivial Hamiltonian circle action that admits no Kaehler structure. The non-triviality of the action is guaranteed by the existence of an isolated fixed point. The motivation for this work comes from the program of classification of Hamiltonian group actions. The Audin-Ahara-Hattori-Karshon classification of Hamiltonian circle actions on compact symplectic 4-manifolds showed that all of such manifolds are Kaehler. Delzant's classification of $2n$-dimensional symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian…
An important question with a rich history is the extent to which the symplectic category is larger than the Kaehler category. Many interesting examples of non-Kaehler symplectic manifolds have been constructed. However, sufficiently large symmetries can force a symplectic manifold to be Kaehler. In this paper, we solve several outstanding problems by constructing the first symplectic manifold with large non-trivial symmetries which does not admit an invariant Kaehler structure. The proof that it is not Kaehler is based on the Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg convexity theorem. Using the ideas of thi…
We discuss the construction of toric Kaehler metrics on symplectic 2n-manifolds with a hamiltonian n-torus action and present a simple derivation of the Guillemin formula for a distinguished Kaehler metric on any such manifold. The results also apply to orbifolds.
The classical Kaehler potential is a real-valued function (KP) such that one can determine a Kaehler (symplectic) structure by differentiating KP. We define a mirror Kaehler potential on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, a real-valued function (MKP) such that one can determine a complex structure by differentiating MKP.
By making use of the symplectic reduction and the cohomogeneity method, we give a general method for constructing Hamiltonian minimal submanifolds in Kaehler manifolds with symmetries. As applications, we construct infinitely many nontrivial complete Hamiltonian minimal submanifolds in CP^n and C^n.
A 4-parametric family of 4-dimensional quasi-Kaehler manifolds with Norden metric is constructed on a Lie group. This family is characterized geometrically. The condition for such a 4-manifold to be isotropic Kaehler is given.
A 4n-parametric family of 4n-dimensional quasi-Kaehler manifolds with Killing Norden metric is constructed on a Lie group. This family is characterized geometrically.
A classical result of D. McDuff asserts that a simply-connected complete Kaehler manifold $(M,g,ω)$ with non positive sectional curvature admits global symplectic coordinates through a symplectomorphism $Ψ: M\rightarrow R^{2n}$ (where $n$ is the complex dimension of $M$), satisfying the following property (proved by E. Ciriza): the image $Ψ(T)$ of any complex totally geodesic submanifold $T\subset M$ through the point $p$ such that $Ψ(p)=0$, is a complex linear subspace of $C^n \simeq R^{2n}$. The aim of this paper is to exhibit, for all positive integers $n$, examples of $n$-dimensional compl…
A 3-parametric family of 6-dimensional quasi-Kaehler manifolds with Norden metric is constructed on a Lie group. This family is characterized geometrically. The condition for such a 6-manifold to be isotropic Kaehler is given.
A symplectic cut of a manifold M with a Hamiltonian circle action is a symplectic quotient of M x C. If M is Kaehler then, since C is Kaehler, the cut space is Kaehler as well. The symplectic structure on the cut is well understood. In this paper we describe the complex structure (and hence the metric) on the cut. We then generalize the construction to the case where M has a torus action and C is replaced by a toric Kaehler manifold.
We obtain estimates on the character of the cohomology of an $S^1$-equivariant holomorphic vector bundle over a Kaehler manifold $M$ in terms of the cohomology of the Lerman symplectic cuts and the symplectic reduction of $M$. In particular, we prove and extend inequalities conjectured by Wu and Zhang. The proof is based on constructing a flat family of complex spaces $M_t$ such that $M_t$ is isomorphic to $M$ for $t\not=0$, while $M_0$ is a singular reducible complex space, whose irreducible components are the Lerman symplectic cuts.
We give a general construction of extremal Kaehler metrics on the total space of certain holomorphic submersions, extending results of Dervan-Sektnan, Fine, and Hong. We consider submersions whose fibres admit a degeneration to Kaehler manifolds with constant scalar curvature, in a way that is compatible with the fibration structure. Thus we allow fibres that are K-semistable, rather than K-polystable; this is crucial to moduli theory. On these fibrations we phrase a partial differential equation whose solutions, called optimal symplectic connections, represent a canonical choice of a relative…
For a connected Lie group G, we show that a complex structure on the total space TG of the tangent bundle of G that is left invariant and has the property that each left translation G-orbit is a totally real submanifold is induced from a smooth immersion of TG into the complexification of G. For G compact and connected, we then characterize left invariant and biinvariant complex structures on the total space T*G of the cotangent bundle of G which combine with the tautological symplectic structure to a Kaehler structure.
We present a simple explicit construction of hyper-Kaehler and hyper-symplectic (also known as neutral hyper-Kaehler or hyper-parakaehler) metrics in 4D using the Bianchi type groups of class A. The construction underlies a correspondence between hyper-Kaehler and hyper-symplectic structures in dimension four.
We prove various classification results for homogeneous locally conformally symplectic manifolds. In particular, we show that a homogeneous locally conformally Kaehler manifold of a reductive group is of Vaisman type, if the normalizer of the isotropy group is compact. We also show that such a result does not hold in the case of noncompact normalizer and determine all left-invariant locally conformally Kaehler structures on reductive Lie groups.
A torsion-free G_2 structure admitting an infinitesimal isometry is shown to give rise to a 4-manifold equipped with a complex symplectic structure and a 1-parameter family of functions and 2-forms linked by second order equations. Reversing the process in various special cases leads to the construction of explicit metrics with holonomy equal to G_2.
Anti-diagonal toric generalized K$\ddot{a}$hler structures of symplectic type on a compact toric symplectic manifold were investigated in \cite{Wang2} . In this article, we consider \emph{general} toric generalized K$\ddot{a}$hler structures of symplectic type, without requiring them to be anti-diagonal. Such a structure is characterized by a triple $(τ, C, F)$ where $τ$ is a strictly convex function defined in the interior of the moment polytope $Δ$ and $C, F$ are two constant anti-symmetric matrices. We prove that underlying each such a structure is a \emph{canonical} toric K$\ddot{a}$hler s…
We prove that an integrable system over a symplectic manifold, whose symplectic form is covariantly constant w.r.t. the Gauss-Manin connection, carries a natural hyper-symplectic structure. Moreover, a special Kaehler structure is induced on the base manifold.
We study the almost Kaehler geometry of adjoint orbits of non-compact real semisimple Lie groups endowed with the Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau symplectic form and a canonically defined almost complex structure. We give explicit formulas for the Chern-Ricci form, the Hermitian scalar curvature and the Nijenhuis tensor in terms of root data. We also discuss when the Chern-Ricci form is a multiple of the symplectic form, and when compact quotients of these orbits are of Kaehler type.
The geometry that is defined by the scalars in couplings of Einstein-Maxwell theories in N=2 supergravity in 4 dimensions is denoted as special Kaehler geometry. There are several equivalent definitions, the most elegant ones involve the symplectic duality group. The original construction used conformal symmetry, which immediately clarifies the symplectic structure and provides a way to make connections to quaternionic geometry and Sasakian manifolds.
A hyperkaehler manifold with a circle action fixing just one complex structure admits a natural a hyperholomorphic line bundle. This forms the basis for the construction of a corresponding quaternionic Kaehler manifold in the work of A.Haydys. We construct in this paper the corresponding holomorphic line bundle on twistor space and compute many examples, including monopole and Higgs bundle moduli spaces. We also show that the bundle on twistor space has a natural meromorphic connection which realizes it as the quantum line bundle for the hyperkaehler family of holomorphic symplectic structures…
We prove that for a mean curvature flow of a compact symplectic surface in a compact Kaehler-Einstein surface, the tangent cone at the first blow-up time consists of a finite union of more than two 2-planes in $R^4$ which are complex in a complex structure on $R^4$.
Four dimensional simply connected Lie groups admitting a pseudo Kähler metric are determined. The corresponding Lie algebras are modelized and the compatible pairs $(J,ω)$ are parametrized up to complex isomorphism (where $J$ is a complex structure and $ω$ is a symplectic structure). Such structure gives rise to a pseudo Riemannian metric $g$ for which $J$ is parallel. It is proved that most of these complex homogeneous spaces admit a pseudo Kähler Einstein metric. Ricci flat and flat metrics are determined. In particular Ricci flat unimodular Kähler Lie algebras are flat in dimension four. Ot…
We study almost Hermitian 4-manifolds with holonomy algebra, for the canonical Hermitian connection, of dimension at most one. We show how Riemannian 4-manifolds admitting five orthonormal symplectic forms fit therein and classify them. In this set-up we also fully describe almost Kaehler 4-manifolds.
Let (M,I) be a compact Kaehler manifold admitting a hypercomplex structure. We show that (M, I) admits a natural HKT-metric. This is used to construct a holomorphic symplectic form on (M,I).
We study G-invariant Kaehler metrics on G^C from the Hamiltonian point of view. As an application we show that there exist (GxG)-invariant Ricci-flat Kaehler metrics on G^C for any compact semisimple Lie group G.
F. Podestà and A. Spiro introduced a class of $G$-manifolds $M$ with a cohomogeneity one action of a compact semisimple Lie group $G$ which admit an invariant Kaehler structure $(g,J)$ (``standard $G$-manifolds") and studied invariant Kaehler and Kaehler-Einstein metrics on $M$. In the first part of this paper, we gave a combinatoric description of the standard non compact $G$-manifolds as the total space $M_φ$ of the homogeneous vector bundle $M = G\times_H V \to S_0 =G/H$ over a flag manifold $S_0$ and we gave necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an invariant Kaehler-Eins…
We construct a Kaehler structure on the punctured cotangent bundle of the Cayley projective plane whose Kaehler form coincides with the natural symplectic form on the cotangent bundle and we show that the geodesic flow action is holomorphic and is expressed in a quite explicit form. We also give an embedding of the punctured cotangent bundle of the Cayley projective plane into the space of 8 times 8 complex matrices.
We review properties of affine special Kaehler structures focusing on singularities of such structures in the simplest case of real dimension two. We describe all possible isolated singularities and compute the monodromy of the flat symplectic connection, which is a part of a special Kaehler structure, near a singularity. Beside numerous local examples, we construct continuous families of special Kaehler structures with isolated singularities on the projective line.
Any pseudo-Hermitian or para-Hermitian manifold of dimension 4 admits a unique Kaehler-Weyl structure; this structure is locally conformally Kaehler if and only if the alternating Ricci tensor vanishes. The alternating Ricci tensor takes values in a certain representation space. In this paper, we show that any algebraic possibility in this representation space can in fact be geometrically realized by a left-invariant Kaehler-Weyl structure on a 4-dimensional Lie group in either the Hermitian or the para-Hermitian setting.
We classify isometric actions of compact Lie groups on quaternionic-Kähler projective spaces with vanishing homogeneity rank. We also show that they are not in general quaternion-coisotropic.
In this paper, we prove that, if a full irreducible infinite dimensional anti-Kaehler isoparametric submanifold of codimension greater than one has $J$-diagonalizable shape operators, then it is an orbit of the action of a Banach Lie group generated by one-parameter transformation groups induced by holomorphic Killing vector fields defined entirely on the ambient Hilbert space.
We deal with compact Kaehler manifolds M which are acted on by a semisimple compact Lie group G of isometries with codimension one regular orbits. We provide an explicit description of the standard blow-ups of such manifolds along complex singular orbits, in case b_1(M) = 0 and the regular orbits are Levi nondegenerate. Up to very few exceptions, all the nonhomogeneous manifolds in this class are shown to admit a G-invariant Kaehler-Einstein metric, giving completely new examples of compact Kaehler-Einstein manifolds.
Let (M, g, omega) be a compact, almost-Kaehler Einstein 4-manifold of negative star-scalar curvature. Then (M, omega) is a MINIMAL symplectic 4-manifold of general type. In particular, M cannot be differentiably decomposed as a connected sum N # (-CP_2).
We study the fields of endomorphisms intertwining pairs of symplectic structures. Using these endomorphisms we prove an analogue of Moser's theorem for simultaneous isotopies of two families of symplectic forms. We also consider the geometric structures defined by pairs and triples of symplectic forms for which the squares of the intertwining endomorphisms are plus or minus the identity. For pairs of forms we recover the notions of symplectic pairs and of holomorphic symplectic structures. For triples we recover the notion of a hypersymplectic structure, and we also find three new structures t…
For a stratified symplectic space, a suitable concept of stratified Kaehler polarization, defined in terms of an appropriate Lie-Rinehart algebra, encapsulates Kaehler polarizations on the strata and the behaviour of the polarizations across the strata and leads to the notion of stratified Kaehler space. This notion establishes an intimate relationship between nilpotent orbits, singular reduction, invariant theory, reductive dual pairs, Jordan triple systems, symmetric domains, and pre-homogeneous spaces; in particular, in the world of singular Poisson geometry, the closures of principal holom…
A Kaehler-Nijenhuis manifold is a Kaehler manifold M, with metric g, complex structure J and Kaehler form F, endowed with a Nijenhuis tensor field A that is compatible with the Poisson stucture defined by F in the sense of the theory of Poisson-Nijenhuis structures. If this happens, and if either AJ=JA or AJ=-JA, M is foliated by im A into non degenerate Kaehler-Nijenhuis submanifolds. If A is a non degenerate (1,1)-tensor field on M, (M,g,J,A) is a Kaehler-Nijenhuis manifold iff one of the following two properties holds: 1) A is associated with a symplectic structure of M that defines a Poiss…
Let M be a real 2m-torus equipped with a translation-invariant metric h and a translation-invariant symplectic form w; the latter we interpret as a magnetic field on M. The Hamiltonian flow of half the norm-squared function induced by h on T^*M (the "kinetic energy") with respect to the twisted symplectic form w_{T^*M}+ π^*w describes the trajectories of a particle moving on M under the influence of the magnetic field w. If [w] is an integral cohomology class, then we can study the geometric quantization of the symplectic manifold (T^*M,w_{T^*M}+π^*w) with the kinetic energy Hamiltonian. We sa…
We prove that no nilpotent Lie algebra admits an invariant generalized Kaehler structure. This is done by showing that a certain differential graded algebra associated to a generalized complex manifold is formal in the generalized Kaehler case, while it is never formal for a generalized complex structure on a nilpotent Lie algebra.
We discuss a correspondence between certain contact pairs on the one hand, and certain locally conformally symplectic forms on the other. In particular, we characterize these structures through suspensions of contactomorphisms. If the contact pair is endowed with a normal metric, then the corresponding lcs form is locally conformally Kaehler, and, in fact, Vaisman. This leads to classification results for normal metric contact pairs. In complex dimension two we obtain a new proof of Belgun's classification of Vaisman manifolds under the additional assumption that the Kodaira dimension is non-n…
This paper pursues the study of the Calabi-Yau equation on certain symplectic non-Kaehler 4-manifolds, building on a key example of Tosatti-Weinkove in which more general theory had proved less effective. Symplectic 4-manifolds admitting a 2-torus fibration over a 2-torus base are modelled on one of three solvable Lie groups. Having assigned an invariant almost-Kaehler structure and a volume form that effectively varies only on the base, one seeks a symplectic form with this volume. Our approach simplifies the previous analysis of the problem, and establishes the existence of solutions in vari…
We construct left invariant quaternionic contact (qc) structures on Lie groups with zero and non-zero torsion and with non-vanishing quaternionic contact conformal curvature tensor, thus showing the existence of non-flat quaternionic contact manifolds. We prove that the product of the real line with a seven dimensional manifold, equipped with a certain qc structure, has a quaternionic Kaehler metric as well as a metric with holonomy contained in Spin(7). As a consequence we determine explicit quaternionic Kaehler metrics and Spin(7)-holonomy metrics which seem to be new. Moreover, we give expl…
A symplectic Lie group is a Lie group with a left-invariant symplectic form. Its Lie algebra structure is that of a quasi-Frobenius Lie algebra. In this note, we identify the groupoid analogue of a symplectic Lie group. We call the aforementioned structure a \textit{$t$-symplectic Lie groupoid}; the "$t$" is motivated by the fact that each target fiber of a $t$-symplectic Lie groupoid is a symplectic manifold. For a Lie groupoid $\mathcal{G}\rightrightarrows M$, we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between quasi-Frobenius Lie algebroid structures on $A\mathcal{G}$ (the associated …
We study the projective special Kaehler condition on groups, providing an intrinsic definition of homogeneous projective special Kaehler that includes the previously known examples. We give intrinsic defining equations that may be used without resorting to computations in the special cone, and emphasise certain associated integrability equations. The definition is shown to have the property that the image of such structures under the c-map is necessarily a left-invariant quaternionic Kaehler structure on a Lie group.
We prove unobstructed deformations for compact Kaehlerian even-dimensional Poisson manifolds whose Poisson tensor degenerates along a divisor with mild singularities. Examples include Hilbert schemes of del Pezzo surfaces.
A contact manifold $M$ can be defined as a quotient of a symplectic manifold $X$ by a proper, free action of $\R^{>0}$, with the symplectic form homogeneous of degree 2. If $X$ is, in addition, Kaehler, and its metric is also homogeneous of degree 2, $M$ is called Sasakian. A Sasakian manifold is realized naturally as a level set of a Kaehler potential on a complex manifold, hence it is equipped with a pseudoconvex CR-structure. We show that any Sasakian manifold $M$ is CR-diffeomorphic to an $S^1$-bundle of unit vectors in a positive line bundle on a projective Kähler orbifold. This induces a…
Let $(G,Ω)$ be a symplectic Lie group, i.e, a Lie group endowed with a left invariant symplectic form. If $\G$ is the Lie algebra of $G$ then we call $(\G,ω=\Om(e))$ a symplectic Lie algebra. The product $\bullet$ on $\G$ defined by $3ω\left(x\bullet y,z\right)=ω\left([x,y],z\right)+ω\left([x,z],y\right)$ extends to a left invariant connection $\na$ on $G$ which is torsion free and symplectic ($\na\Om=0)$. When $\na$ has vanishing curvature, we call $(G,Ω)$ a flat symplectic Lie group and $(\G,\om)$ a flat symplectic Lie algebra. In this paper, we study flat symplectic Lie groups. We start by …
Every symplectic Lie algebra with degenerate (including non-abelian nilpotent symplectic Lie algebras) has the structure of a quadratic extension. We give a standard model and describe the equivalence classes on the level of corresponding quadratic cohomology sets. Finally, we give a scheme to classify the isomorphism classes of symplectic Lie algebras with degenerate center. We also give a classification scheme for nilpotent symplectic Lie algebras and compute a complete list of all 6-dimensional nilpotent symplectic Lie algebras, which removes some little inaccuracies in an older list.
We give a short proof of the (known) result that there are no Kaehler structures on exotic tori. This yields a negative solution to a problem posed by Benson and Gordon. W discuss the symplectic version of the problem and analyze results which yield an evidence for the conjecture that there are no symplectic structures on exotic tori.
We study the half-form Kaehler quantization of a smooth symplectic toric manifold $(X,ω)$, such that $[ω/2π]-c_{1}(X)/2 \in H^{2}(X,{\mathbb{Z}})$ and is nonnegative. We define the half-form corrected quantization of $(X,ω)$ to be given by holomorphic sections of a certain hermitian line bundle $L\rightarrow X$ with Chern class $[ω/ 2π]-c_{1}(X)/2$. These sections then correspond to integral points of a "corrected" polytope $P_{L}$ with integral vertices. For a suitably translated moment polytope $P_{X}$ for $(X,ω)$, we have that $P_{L}\subset P_{X}$ is obtained from $P_{X}$ by a one-half inwa…
Every metric symplectic Lie algebra has the structure of a quadratic extension. We give a standard model and describe the equivalence classes on the level of corresponding quadratic cohomology sets. Finally, we give a scheme to classify the isomorphism classes of metric symplectic Lie algebras and give a complete list of all these Lie algebras in special cases.
In this paper we show as main results two structure theorems of a compact homogeneous locally conformally Kaehler (or shortly l.c.K.) manifold, a holomorphic structure theorem asserting that it has a structure of holomorphic principal fiber bundle over a flag manifold with fiber a 1-dimensional complex torus, and a metric structure theorem asserting that it is necessarily of Vaisman type. We also discuss and determine l.c.K. reductive Lie groups and compact locally homogeneous l.c.K. manifolds of reductive Lie groups.
Having fixed a Kaehler class and the unique corresponding hyperkaehler metric, we prove that all special Lagrangian submanifolds of an irreducible symplectic 4-fold X are bi-Lagrangian and that they are obtained by complex submanifolds via a sort of "hyperkaehler rotation trick"; thus they retain part of the rigidity of complex submanifolds: indeed all special Lagrangian submanifolds of X turn out to be real analytic.
In this work we investigate Ricci flows of almost Kaehler structures on Lie algebroids when the fundamental geometric objects are completely determined by (semi) Riemannian metrics, or effective) regular generating Lagrange/ Finsler, functions. There are constructed canonical almost symplectic connections for which the geometric flows can be represented as gradient ones and characterized by nonholonomic deformations of Grigory Perelman's functionals. The first goal of this paper is to define such thermodynamical type values and derive almost Kähler - Ricci geometric evolution equations. The se…
