Let (M,I) be a compact Kaehler manifold admitting a hypercomplex structure. We show that (M, I) admits a natural HKT-metric. This is used to construct a holomorphic symplectic form on (M,I).
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with a triple of complex structures satisfying the quaternionic relations. A holomorphic Lagrangian variety on a hypercomplex manifold with trivial canonical bundle is a holomorphic subvariety which is calibrated by a form associated with the holomorphic volume form; this notion is a generalization of the usual holomorphic Lagrangian subvarieties known in hyperkaehler geometry. An HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) metric on a hypercomplex manifold is a metric determined by a local potential, in a similar way to the Kaehler metric. We prove that a ba…
A hypercomplex manifold M is a manifold with a triple I,J,K of complex structure operators satisfying quaternionic relations. For each quaternion L=aI +bJ+cK, L^2=-1, L is also a complex structure operator on M, called an induced complex structure. We are studying compact complex subvarieties of (M,L), when L is a generic induced complex structure. Under additional assumptions (Obata holonomy contained in SL(n,H), existence of an HKT metric), we prove that (M,L) contains no divisors, and all complex subvarieties of codimension 2 are trianalytic (that is, also hypercomplex).
A nilmanifold is a (left) quotient of a nilpotent Lie group by a cocompact lattice. A hypercomplex structure on a manifold is a triple of complex structure operators satisfying the quaternionic relations. A hypercomplex nilmanifold is a compact quotient of a nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant hypercomplex structure. Such a manifold admits a whole 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$ of complex structures induced by quaternions. We prove that for any hypercomplex nilmanifold $M$ and a generic complex structure $L\in S^2$, the complex manifold $(M,L)$ has algebraic dimension 0. A stronger …
Let (M,I,J,K) be a compact hypercomplex manifold admitting an HKT-metric. Assume that the canonical bundle of (M,I) is trivial as a holomorphic line bundle. We show that the holonomy of Obata connection on M is contained in SL(n,H). In Appendix we apply these arguments to compact nilmanifolds equipped with abelian hypercomplex structures, showing that such manifolds have holonomy in SL(n,H).
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with three complex structures I, J, K satisfying the quaternionic relations. Let M be a 4-dimensional compact smooth manifold equipped with a hypercomplex structure, and E be a vector bundle on M. We show that the moduli space of anti-self-dual connections on E is also hypercomplex, and admits a strong HKT metric. We also study manifolds with (4,4)-supersymmetry, that is, Riemannian manifolds equipped with a pair of strong HKT-structures that have opposite torsion. In the language of Hitchin's and Gualtieri's generalized complex geometry, (4,4)-ma…
A hypercomplex manifold is by definition a smooth manifold equipped with two anticommuting integrable almost complex structures. For example, every hyperkaehler manifold is canonically hypercomplex (the converse is not true). For every hypercomplex manifold M, the two almost complex structures define a smooth action of the algebra of quaternions on the tangent bundle to M. This allows to associate to every hypercomplex manifold M of dimension 4n a certain almost complex manifold X of dimension 4n+2, called the twistor space of M. When M is hyperkaehler, X is well-known to be integrable. We sho…
A hypercomplex manifold $M$ is a manifold equipped with three complex structures satisfying quaternionic relations. Such a manifold admits a canonical torsion-free connection preserving the quaternion action, called Obata connection. A quaternionic Hermitian metric is a Riemannian metric on which is invariant with respect to unitary quaternions. Such a metric is called HKT if it is locally obtained as a Hessian of a function averaged with quaternions. HKT metric is a natural analogue of a Kahler metric on a complex manifold. We push this analogy further, proving a quaternionic analogue of Buch…
In this expository paper (Bourbaki talk) we survey results of Claire Voisin showing that there exist compact Kaehler manifolds which are not homeomorphic to any projective manifold.
We show that any set of quotients with fixed Chern classes of a given coherent sheaf on a compact Kaehler manifold is bounded in a sense which we define. The result is proved by adapting Grothendieck's boundedness criterium expressed via the Hilbert polynomial to the Kaehler set-up. As a consequence we obtain the compactness of the connected components of the Douady space of a compact Kaehler manifold.
We define the C^*-action on moduli spaces of reductive representations of fundamental groups of quasi-compact Kaehler manifolds by solving Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation. As applications in algebraic geometry we show a non-abelian Hodge (p,q)-type theorem for families of quasi-projective manifolds. We also prove that any discrete sub group of a Lie group of rank >1 that is not of Hodge type can't be the fundamental group of a quasi-compact Kaehler manifold.
We discuss the construction of toric Kaehler metrics on symplectic 2n-manifolds with a hamiltonian n-torus action and present a simple derivation of the Guillemin formula for a distinguished Kaehler metric on any such manifold. The results also apply to orbifolds.
Based on recent work of S. K. Donaldson and T. Mabuchi, we prove that any extremal Kaehler metric in the sense of E. Calabi, defined on the product of polarized compact complex projective manifolds is the product of extremal Kaehler metrics on each factor, provided that the integral Futaki invariants of the polarized manifold vanish or its automorphism group satisfies a constraint. This extends a result of S.-T. Yau about the splitting of a Kaehler-Einstein metric on the product of compact complex manifolds to the more general setting of extremal Kaehler metrics.
We consider a compact Kaehler manifold whose dual Kaehler cone contains a rational interior point. The general problem we have in mind is how far the manifold is from being projective; i.e. we ask for the algebraic dimension. We prove e.g. that if the interior point is represented by an effective curve in dimension 3, then the manifold has algebraic dimension at least 2 unless the variety is a so-called simple non-Kummer 3-fold. We also investigate 3-folds containing curves with ample normal bundle. It seems likely that examples with algebraic dimension 2 really exist.
We show that many spin 6-manifolds have the homotopy type but not the homeomorphism type of a Kaehler manifold. Moreover, for given Betti numbers, there are only finitely many deformation types and hence topological types of smooth complex projectve spin threefolds of general type. Finally, on a fixed spin 6-manifold, the Chern numbers take on only finitely many values on all possible Kaehler structures.
We survey some properties of the automorphism groups of compact Kaehler manifolds. In particular, we present recent results by Keum, Oguiso and Zhang on the structure of these groups from the Tits alternative point of view. Several other related results will be also discussed. This paper is written for the VIASM Annual Meeting 2012.
Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold equipped with a parallel differential form ω. We prove a version of Kaehler identities in this setting. This is used to show that the de Rham algebra of M is weakly equivalent to its subquotient $(H^*_c(M), d)$, called {\bf the pseudocohomology} of M. When M is compact and Kaehler and ωis its Kaehler form, $(H^*_c(M), d)$ is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of M. This gives another proof of homotopy formality for Kaehler manifolds, originally shown by Deligne, Griffiths, Morgan and Sullivan. We compute $H^i_c(M)$ for a compact G_2-manifold, showing th…
We consider the moduli space MN of flat unitary connections on an open Kaehler manifold U (complement of a divisor with normal crossings) with restrictions on their monodromy transformations. Using intersection and L2 cohomologies with degenerating coefficients we construct a natural symplectic form F on MN. When U is quasi-projective we prove that F is actually a Kaehler form.
We give a simple proof of a result originally due to Dimca and Suciu: a group that is both Kaehler and the fundamental group of a closed three-manifold is finite. We also prove that a group that is both the fundamental group of a closed three-manifold and of a non-Kaehler compact complex surface is infinite cyclic or the direct product of an infinite cyclic group and a group of order two.
The paper studies the deformation theory of a holomorphic surjective map from a normal compact complex space to a compact Kaehler manifold and describes the component of the space of holomorphic maps, generalizing results in the projective case by Kebekus and the authors.
For phase-space manifolds which are compact Kaehler manifolds relations between the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization and the quantization with the help of Berezin's coherent states and symbols are studied. First the results on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of arbitrary compact Kaehler manifolds due to Bordemann, Meinrenken and Schlichenmaier are recalled. It is shown that the covariant symbol map is adjoint to the Toeplitz map. The Berezin transform for compact Kaehler manifolds is discussed. (Talk presented at the XVII workshop on geometric methods in physics, Bialowieza, Poland, July 3 --Ju…
We prove that any compact complex surface with positive first Chern class admits an Einstein metric which is conformally related to a Kaehler metric. The key new ingredient is the existence of such a metric on the blow-up of the complex projective plane at two distinct points.
We prove that for every compact Kähler manifold $X$ there exists an $L$-infinity morphism, lifting the usual cup product in cohomology, from the Kodaira-Spencer differential graded Lie algebra to the suspension of the space of linear endomorphisms of the singular cohomology of $X$. As a consequence we get an algebraic proof of the principle ``obstructions to deformations of compact Kaehler manifolds annihilate ambient cohomology''.
Given a compact Kaehler manifold, we consider the complement U of a divisor with normal crossings. We study the variety of unitary representations of the fundamental group of U with certain restrictions related to the divisor. We show that the possible singularities of this variety as well as of the corresponding moduli space of irreducible representations are quadratic. In the course of our proof we exhibit a differential graded Lie algebra of which reflects our deformation problem.
Using examples of compact complex 3-manifolds which arise as twistor spaces, we show that the class of compact complex manifolds bimeromorphic to Kähler manifolds is not stable under small deformations of complex structure.
This article is a review on Berezin-Toeplitz operator and Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization for compact quantizable Kaehler manifolds. The basic objects, concepts, and results are given. This concerns the correct semi-classical limit behaviour of the operator quantization, the unique Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization (star product), covariant and contravariant Berezin symbols, and Berezin transform. Other related objects and constructions are also discussed.
We recently constructed examples of compact Kaeler manifolds which do not have the homotopy type of a projective complex manifold. They were however obtained by blowing-up certain complex tori, which are themselves deformation equivalent to complex projective manifolds. Thus it remained possible that in higher dimension, a birational version of Kodaira's theorem still holds. We construct however in this paper compact Kaehler manifolds, no birational model of which has the homotopy type of a projective manifold.
Summary: The Hodge conjecture asks whether rational Hodge classes on a smooth projective manifolds are generated by the classes of algebraic subsets, or equivalently by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. On a compact Kaehler manifold, Hodge conjecture is known to be false if algebraic subsets are replaced with analytic subsets. Here we show that it is even false that for a Kaehler manifold, Hodge classes are generated by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. We also show that finite free resolution do not in general exist for coherent sheaves on compact Kaehler manifolds.
We study the topology and geometry of those compact Riemannian (4n)-manifolds (M,g), n > 1, with positive scalar curvature and holonomy in Sp(n)Sp(1). Up to homothety, we show that there are only finitely many such manifolds of any dimension 4n.
We show that in every dimension greater than or equal to 4, there exist compact Kaehler manifolds which do not have the homotopy type of projective complex manifolds. Thus they a fortiori are not deformation equivalent to a projective manifold, which solves negatively Kodaira's problem. We give both non simply connected (of dimension at least 4) and simply connected (of dimension at least 6) such examples.
We prove two results relating 3-manifold groups to fundamental groups occurring in complex geometry. Let N be a compact, connected, orientable 3-manifold. If N has non-empty, toroidal boundary, and π_1(N) is a Kaehler group, then N is the product of a torus with an interval. On the other hand, if N has either empty or toroidal boundary, and π_1(N) is a quasi-projective group, then all the prime components of N are graph manifolds.
