The paper studies the deformation theory of a holomorphic surjective map from a normal compact complex space to a compact Kaehler manifold and describes the component of the space of holomorphic maps, generalizing results in the projective case by Kebekus and the authors.
In this expository paper (Bourbaki talk) we survey results of Claire Voisin showing that there exist compact Kaehler manifolds which are not homeomorphic to any projective manifold.
We recently constructed examples of compact Kaeler manifolds which do not have the homotopy type of a projective complex manifold. They were however obtained by blowing-up certain complex tori, which are themselves deformation equivalent to complex projective manifolds. Thus it remained possible that in higher dimension, a birational version of Kodaira's theorem still holds. We construct however in this paper compact Kaehler manifolds, no birational model of which has the homotopy type of a projective manifold.
Based on the celebrated result on zeros of holomorphic 1-forms on complex varieties of general type by Popa and Schnell, we study holomorphic 1-forms on $n$-dimensional varieties of Kodaira dimension $n-1$. We show that a complex minimal smooth projective variety $X$ of Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=\dim X-1$ admits a holomorphic 1-form without zero if and only if there is a smooth morphism from $X$ to an elliptic curve. Furthermore, for a general smooth projective variety (not necessarily minimal) $X$ of Kodaira codimension one, we give a structure theorem for $X$ given that $X$ admits a holomorphi…
We show that every holomorphic one-form on a smooth complex projective variety of general type must vanish at some point. The proof uses generic vanishing theory for Hodge D-modules on abelian varieties.
We prove that the Kodaira dimension of the n-fold universal family of lattice-polarized holomorphic symplectic varieties with dominant and generically finite period map stabilizes to the moduli number when n is sufficiently large. Then we study the transition of Kodaira dimension explicitly, from negative to nonnegative, for known explicit families of polarized symplectic varieties. In particular, we determine the exact transition point in the cases of Beauville-Donagi and Debarre-Voisin, where the Borcherds Phi_{12} form plays a crucial role.
A famous conjecture attributed to Kodaira asks whether any compact Kaehler manifold can be approximated by projective manifolds. We confirm this conjecture on projectivized direct sums of three line bundles on three-dimensional complex tori which appears rather surprising in view of expected dimensions of certain families of tori. We also discuss possible counter examples.
We prove that for every compact Kähler manifold $X$ there exists an $L$-infinity morphism, lifting the usual cup product in cohomology, from the Kodaira-Spencer differential graded Lie algebra to the suspension of the space of linear endomorphisms of the singular cohomology of $X$. As a consequence we get an algebraic proof of the principle ``obstructions to deformations of compact Kaehler manifolds annihilate ambient cohomology''.
We give a new proof that every holomorphic one-form on a smooth complex projective variety of general type must vanish at some point, first proven by Popa and Schnell using generic vanishing theorems for Hodge modules. Our proof relies on Simpson's results on the relation between rank one Higgs bundles and local systems of one-dimensional complex vectors spaces, and the structure of the cohomology jump loci in their moduli spaces.
It is in general unknown which topological complex vector bundles on a non-algebraic surface admit holomorphic structures. We solve this problem for primary Kodaira surfaces by using results of Kani on curves of genus two with elliptic differentials. Some of the corresponding moduli spaces will be smooth compact and holomorphically symplectic.
The principle "ambient cohomology of a Kaehler manifold annihilates obstructions" has been known and exploited since pioneering work of Kodaira. This paper extends and unifies many known results in two contexts, abstract deformations of compact Kaehler manifolds and deformations of submanifolds within a given deformation of the ambient manifold.
Based on work of R. Lazarsfeld and M. Popa, we use the derivative complex associated to the bundle of the holomorphic p-forms to provide inequalities for all the Hodge numbers of a special class of irregular compact Kaehler manifolds. For 3-folds and 4-folds we give an asymptotic bound for all the Hodge numbers in terms of the irregularity. As a byproduct, via the BGG correspondence, we also bound the regularity of the exterior cohomology modules of bundles of holomorphic p-forms.
In this paper, we prove that the zero-locus of any global holomorphic log-one-form on a projective log-smooth pair $\left(X,D\right)$ of log-general type must be non-empty. Applying this result, we give an answer to the algebraic hyperbolicity part of Shafarevich's conjecture, with the generic fiber being Kawamata-log-terminal (klt) and of log-general type.
A classical result in complex geometry says that the automorphism group of a manifold of general type is discrete. It is more generally true that there are only finitely many surjective morphisms between two fixed projective manifolds of general type. Rigidity of surjective morphisms, and the failure of a morphism to be rigid have been studied by a number of authors in the past. The main result of this paper states that surjective morphisms are always rigid, unless there is a clear geometric reason for it. More precisely, we can say the following. First, deformations of surjective morphisms be…
A Kodaira fibration is a compact, complex surface admitting a holomorphic submersion onto a complex curve, such that the fibers have nonconstant moduli. We consider Kodaira fibrations X with nontrivial invariant rational cohomology in degree 1, proving that if the dimension of the holomorphic invariants is 1 or 2, then X admits a branch covering over a product of curves inducing an isomorphism on rational cohomology in degree 1. We also study the class of Kodaira fibrations possessing a holomorphic section, and demonstrate that having a section imposes no restriction on possible monodromies.
We show that in every dimension greater than or equal to 4, there exist compact Kaehler manifolds which do not have the homotopy type of projective complex manifolds. Thus they a fortiori are not deformation equivalent to a projective manifold, which solves negatively Kodaira's problem. We give both non simply connected (of dimension at least 4) and simply connected (of dimension at least 6) such examples.
Moduli spaces of stably irreducible sheaves on Kodaira surfaces belong to the short list of examples of smooth and compact holomorphic symplectic manifolds, and it is not yet known how they fit into the classification of holomorphic symplectic manifolds by deformation type. This paper studies a natural Lagrangian fibration on these moduli spaces to determine that they are not Kähler or simply connected, ruling out most of the known deformation types of holomorphic symplectic manifolds.
Two conjectures relating the Kodaira dimension of a smooth projective variety and existence of number of nowhere vanishing 1-forms on the variety are proposed and verified in dimension 3.
A generically generated vector bundle on a smooth projective variety yields a rational map to a Grassmannian, called Kodaira map. We answer a previous question, raised by the asymptotic behaviour of such maps, giving rise to a birational characterization of abelian varieties. In particular we prove that, under the conjectures of the Minimal Model Program, a smooth projective variety is birational to an abelian variety if and only if it has Kodaira dimension 0 and some symmetric power of its cotangent sheaf is generically generated by its global sections.
For compact complex surfaces (M^4, J) of Kaehler type, it was previously shown that the sign of the Yamabe invariant Y(M) only depends on the Kodaira dimension Kod (M, J). In this paper, we prove that this pattern in fact extends to all compact complex surfaces except those of class VII. In the process, we give a simplified proof of a result that explains why the exclusion of class VII is essential here.
A Finsler metric, whose holomorphic curvature is bounded from above by a negative constant, is constructed on the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds including singularities. Demailly's version of Ahlfors' lemma yields hyperbolicity of the moduli stack.
We give a general construction of extremal Kaehler metrics on the total space of certain holomorphic submersions, extending results of Dervan-Sektnan, Fine, and Hong. We consider submersions whose fibres admit a degeneration to Kaehler manifolds with constant scalar curvature, in a way that is compatible with the fibration structure. Thus we allow fibres that are K-semistable, rather than K-polystable; this is crucial to moduli theory. On these fibrations we phrase a partial differential equation whose solutions, called optimal symplectic connections, represent a canonical choice of a relative…
We provide a characterization of complex tori using holomorphic symmetric differentials. With the same method we show that compact complex manifolds of Kodaira dimension 0 having some symmetric power of the cotangent bundle globally generated are quotients of parallelizable manifolds, therefore have an infinite fundamental group.
Given a positive integer $n$ and a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, we prove that the symmetric product $S^n(X)$ admits a Kaehler form of nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature if and only if $\text{genus}(X) \leq 1$. If $n$ is greater than or equal to the gonality of $X$, we prove that $S^n(X)$ does not admit any Kaehler form of nonpositive holomorphic sectional curvature.
In this paper we prove that for a nonsingular projective variety of dimension at most 4 and with non-negative Kodaira dimension, the Kodaira dimension of coherent subsheaves of $Ω^p$ is bounded from above by the Kodaira dimension of the variety. This implies the finiteness of the fundamental group for such an $X$ provided that $X$ has vanishing Kodaira dimension and non-trivial holomorphic Euler characteristic.
We investigate algebraicity properties of quotients of complex spaces by complex reductive Lie groups G. We obtain a projectivity result for compact momentum map quotients of algebraic G-varieties. Furthermore, we prove equivariant versions of Kodaira's Embedding Theorem and Chow's Theorem relative to an analytic Hilbert quotient. Combining these results we derive an equivariant algebraisation theorem for complex spaces with projective quotient.
In this paper we analyse the birational geometry of O'Grady ten dimensional manifolds, giving a characterisation of Kaehler classes and lagrangian fibrations. Moreover, we study symplectic compactifications of intermediate jacobian fibrations of smooth cubic fourfolds.
We classify all holomorphic actions of higher rank lattices on compact Kaehler manifolds of dimension 3. This provides a complete answer to Zimmer's program for holomorphic actions on compact Kaehler manifolds of dimension at most 3.
We characterize those unipotent representations of the fundamental group $π_1(X,x)$ of a compact Kaehler manifold $X$, which correspond to a Higgs bundle whose underlying Higgs field is equal to zero. The characterization is parallel to the one that R. Hain gave of those unipotent representations of $π_1(X,x)$ that can be realized as the monodromy of a flat connection on the holomorphically trivial vector bundle. We see that Hain's result and ours follow from a careful study of Simpson's correspondence between Higgs bundles and local systems.
An n-dimensional complex manifold M is said to be (holomorphically) dominable by $\CC^n$ if there is a map $F:\CC^n \ra M$ which is holomorphic such that the Jacobian determinant $\det(DF)$ is not identically zero. Such a map F is called a dominating map. In this paper, we attempt to classify algebraic surfaces X which are dominable by $\CC^2$ using a combination of techniques from algebraic topology, complex geometry and analysis. One of the key tools in the study of algebraic surfaces is the notion of Kodaira dimension (defined in section 2). By Kodaira's pioneering work and its extensions, …
We classify compact complex surfaces whose groups of bimeromorphic selfmaps have bounded finite subgroups. We also prove that the stabilizer of a point in the automorphism group of a compact complex surface of zero Kodaira dimension, as well as the stabilizer of a point in the automorphism group of an arbitrary compact Kaehler manifold of non-negative Kodaira dimension, always has bounded finite subgroups.
Given a compact Kaehler manifold X, it is shown that pairs of the form (E, D), where E is a trivial holomorphic vector bundle on X, and D is an integrable holomorphic connection on $E$, produce a neutral Tannakian category. The corresponding pro-algebraic affine group scheme is studied. In particular, it is shown that this pro-algebraic affine group scheme for a compact Riemann surface determines uniquely the isomorphism class of the Riemann surface.
A locally conformally Kaehler (LCK) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kaehler covering M, with monodromy acting on M by Kaehler homotheties. A compact LCK manifold is Vaisman if it admits a holomorphic flow acting by non-trivial homotheties on M. We prove a non-Kaehler analogue of Kodaira embedding theorem: any compact Vaisman manifold admits a natural holomorphic immersion to a Hopf manifold. As an application, we obtain that any Sasakian manifold has a contact immersion to an odd-dimensional sphere.
We investigate differential geometric aspects of moduli spaces parametrizing solutions of coupled vortex equations over a compact Kaehler manifold X. These solutions are known to be related to polystable triples via a Kobayashi-Hitchin type correspondence. Using a characterization of infinitesimal deformations in terms of the cohomology of a certain elliptic double complex, we construct a Hermitian structure on these moduli spaces. This Hermitian structure is proved to be Kaehler. The proof involves establishing a fiber integral formula for the Hermitian form. We compute the curvature tensor o…
We study holomorphic 2-forms on projective (or compact Kaehler) threefolds not of general type and prove that in almost all cases the 2-form is created by some standard process. This means roughly that every 2-form is induced by a meromorphic map to a surface, a torus or a symplectic manifold. If the 2-form has only finitely many zeroes, more precise results hold. Finally we prove that compact Kaehler threefolds with negative Kodaira dimension are uniruled unles they are simple, i.e. there is no positive dimensional compact subvariety through the general point of the manifold (these simple thr…
Theorems of Barth-Lefschetz type describe restrictions on the topology of varieties of small codimension. R. Schoen and J. Wolfson, using Morse theory on a path space, have described a technique to prove theorems of this kind for complex submanifolds of Kähler manifolds of non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature. In this paper this program is carried out for the compact Hermitian symmetric spaces. The key technical point is to define and compute an invariant, called the {\it complex positivity}, that measures the ``amount'' of positive curvature, in a suitable sense.
Each Scorza variety and its secant varieties in the ambient projective space are identified, in the realm of singular Poisson-Kaehler geometry, in terms of projectivizations of holomorphic nilpotent orbits in suitable Lie algebras of hermitian type, the holomorphic nilpotent orbits, in turn, being affine varieties. The ambient projective space acquires an exotic Kaehler structure, the closed stratum being the Scorza variety and the closures of the higher strata its secant varieties. In this fashion, the secant varieties become exotic projective varieties. In the rank 3 case, the four regular S…
We introduce an axiomatic definition for the Kodaira dimension and classify Thurston geometries in dimensions $\leq 5$ in terms of this Kodaira dimension. We show that the Kodaira dimension is monotone with respect to the partial order defined by maps of non-zero degree between 5-manifolds. We study the compatibility of our definition with traditional notions of Kodaira dimension, especially the highest possible Kodaira dimension. To this end, we establish a connection between the simplicial volume and the holomorphic Kodaira dimension, which in particular implies that any smooth Kähler 3-fold…
For a stratified symplectic space, a suitable concept of stratified Kaehler polarization, defined in terms of an appropriate Lie-Rinehart algebra, encapsulates Kaehler polarizations on the strata and the behaviour of the polarizations across the strata and leads to the notion of stratified Kaehler space. This notion establishes an intimate relationship between nilpotent orbits, singular reduction, invariant theory, reductive dual pairs, Jordan triple systems, symmetric domains, and pre-homogeneous spaces; in particular, in the world of singular Poisson geometry, the closures of principal holom…
We give a Kodaira-type classification of general singular fibers of a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration in Fujiki's class $\mathcal C$. Our approach is based on the study of the characteristic vector field of the discriminantal hypersurface, which naturally arises from the defining equation of the hypersurface via the symplectic form. As an application, we show that the characteristic foliation of the discriminantal hypersurface has algebraic leaves which are either rational curves or smooth elliptic curves.
We prove that a holomorphic line bundle on a projective manifold is pseudo-effective if and only if its degree on any member of a covering family of curves is non-negative. This is a consequence of a duality statement between the cone of pseudo-effective divisors and the cone of ``movable curves'', which is obtained from a general theory of movable intersections and approximate Zariski decomposition for closed positive (1,1)-currents. As a corollary, a projective manifold has a pseudo-effective canonical bundle if and only if it is is not uniruled. We also prove that a 4-fold with a canonical …
Let $E\to M$ be a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kaehler manifold $(M, ω)$. We prove that if $E$ admits a $ω$-balanced metric (in X. Wang's terminology) then it is unique. This result together with a result of L. Biliotti and A. Ghigi implies the existence and uniqueness of $ω$-balanced metrics of certain direct sums of irreducible homogeneous vector bundles over rational homogeneous varieties. We finally apply our result to show the rigidity of $ω$-balanced Kaehler maps into Grassmannians.
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with a triple of complex structures satisfying the quaternionic relations. A holomorphic Lagrangian variety on a hypercomplex manifold with trivial canonical bundle is a holomorphic subvariety which is calibrated by a form associated with the holomorphic volume form; this notion is a generalization of the usual holomorphic Lagrangian subvarieties known in hyperkaehler geometry. An HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) metric on a hypercomplex manifold is a metric determined by a local potential, in a similar way to the Kaehler metric. We prove that a ba…
Let (M,I) be a compact Kaehler manifold admitting a hypercomplex structure. We show that (M, I) admits a natural HKT-metric. This is used to construct a holomorphic symplectic form on (M,I).
Let $M$ be a Kaehler manifold, and consider the total space $T^*M$ of the cotangent bundle to $M$. We show that in the formal neighborhood of the zero section $M \subset T^*M$ the space $T^*M$ admits a canonical hyperkaehler structure, compatible with the complex and holomorphic symplectic structures on $T^*M$. The associated hyperkaehler metric $h$ coincides with the given Kaehler metric on the zero section $M \subset T^*M$. Moreover, $h$ is invariant under the canonical circle action on $T^*M$ by dilatations along the fibers of $T^*M$ over $M$. We show that a hyperkaehler structure with thes…
This is partly a survey and partly a research article. Some known results and open problems about Kaehler groups (fundamental groups of compact Kaehler manifolds) are discussed. A new notion of Kaehler homomorphism is introduced. This is a homomorphism induced by a holomorphic map between these types of manifolds. Some obstructions for a homomorphism to be Kaehler are discussed. Among these is the main result on the vanishing of a certain cohomology class associated to such map. This is reduced to the decomposition theorem for perverse sheaves suitably extended to Kaehler orbifolds.
The classification of class VII surfaces is a very difficult classical problem in complex geometry. It is considered by experts to be the most important gap in the Enriques-Kodaira classification table for complex surfaces. The standard conjecture concerning this problem states that any minimal class VII surface with $b_2>0$ has $b_2$ curves. By the results of Kato, Nakamura and Dloussky/Oeljeklaus/Toma, this conjecture (if true) would solve this classification problem completely. We explain a new approach (based on techniques from Donaldson theory) to prove existence of curves on class VII su…
Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g \geq 2$. For each $d <η(X)$, where $η(X)$ is the gonality of $X$, the symmetric product $\text{Sym}^d(X)$ embeds into $\text{Pic}^d(X)$ by sending an effective divisor of degree $d$ to the corresponding holomorphic line bundle. Therefore, the restriction of the flat Kähler metric on $\text{Pic}^d(X)$ is a Kähler metric on $\text{Sym}^d(X)$. We investigate this Kähler metric on $\text{Sym}^d(X)$. In particular, we estimate it's Bergman kernel. We also prove that any holomorphic automorphism of $\text{Sym}^d(X)$ is an isometry.
Using the Kodaira dimension and the fundamental group of X, we succeed in classifying algebraic surfaces which are dominable by C^2 except for certain cases in which X is an algebraic surface of Kodaira dimension zero and the case when X is rational without any logarithmic 1-form. More specifically, in the case when X is compact (namely projective), we need to exclude only the case when X is birationally equivalent to a K3 surface (a simply connected compact complex surface which admits a globally non-vanishing holomorphic 2-form) that is neither elliptic nor Kummer. With the exceptions noted …
In this thesis, we study deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson manifolds and algebraic Poisson schemes in the framework of Kodaira-Spencer's analytic deformation theory and Grothendieck's algebraic deformation theory.
The goal of this note is to exhibit the integrability properties (in the sense of the Frobenius theorem) of holomorphic p-forms with values in certain line bundles with seminegative curvature on a compact Kaehler manifold. There are in fact very strong restrictions, both on the holomorphic form and on the curvature of the seminegative line bundle. As a consequence, these observations provide interesting information on the structure of projective manifolds which admit a contact structure: either they are Fano manifolds or, thanks to results of Kebekus-Peternell-Sommese-Wisniewski, they are biho…
We study the asymptotics of Fubini-Study currents and zeros of random holomorphic sections associated to a sequence of singular Hermitian line bundles on a compact normal Kaehler complex space.
Applying the Second Main Theorem we deal with the algebraic degeneracy of entire holomorphic curves from the complex plane into a complex algebraic normal variety of positive log Kodaira dimension that admits a finite proper morphism to a semi-abelian variety. We will also discuss applications to the Kobayashi hyperbolicity problem.
The existence of a Kodaira fibration, i.e., of a fibration of a compact complex surface $S$ onto a complex curve $B$ which is a differentiable but not a holomorphic bundle, forces the geographical slope $ ν(S) = c_1^2 (S) / c_2 (S)$ to lie in the interval $(2,3)$. But up to now all the known examples had slope $ ν(S) \leq 2 + 1/3$. In this paper we consider a special class of surfaces admitting two such Kodaira fibrations, and we can construct many new examples, showing in particular that there are such fibrations attaining the slope $ ν(S) = 2 + 2/3$. We are able to explicitly describe the mo…
