Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree,i.e., Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a given variety X is less than or equal to deg(X)-codimension(X)+1. In this article we study how the birational geometry of a normal projective variety $X$ is influenced by a normal subvariety $A \subset X.$ One of the most basic examples in this context is provided by the following situation. Let $f:X\to Y$ be a surjective holomorphic map with connected fibers between compact connected complex manifolds. Stabilization of the cohomology of thickenings

For a local complete intersection subvariety $X=V({\mathcal I})$ in ${\mathbb P}^n$ over a field of characteristic zero, we show that, in cohomological degrees smaller than the codimension of the singular locus of $X$, the cohomology of vector bundles on the formal completion of ${\mathbb P}^n$ along $X$ can be effectively computed as the cohomology on any sufficiently high thickening $X_t=V({\mathcal I^t})$; the main ingredient here is a positivity result for the normal bundle of $X$. Deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson submanifolds

In this paper, we study deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson submanifolds which extend Kodaira's series of papers on semi-regularity (deformations of compact complex submanifolds of codimension 1), deformations of compact complex submanifolds of arbitrary codimensions, and stability of compact complex submanifolds in the context of holomorphic Poisson deformations. Effective log Iitaka fibrations for surfaces and threefolds

We prove an analogue of Fujino and Mori's ``bounding the denominators'' in the log canonical bundle formula (see also Prokhorov and Shokurov) for Kawamata log terminal pairs of relative dimension one. As an application we prove that for a klt pair $(X,Δ)$ of Kodaira codimension one and dimension at most three such that the coefficients of $Δ$ are in a DCC set $\mathcal{A}$, there is a natural number $N$ that depends only on $\mathcal{A}$ for which the round down of $\N(K_X+Δ)$ induces the Iitaka fibration. We also prove a birational boundedness result for klt surfaces of general type.

Numerically nonspecial varieties

Campana introduced the class of special varieties as the varieties admitting no Bogomolov sheaves i.e. rank one coherent subsheaves of maximal Kodaira dimension in some exterior power of the cotangent bundle. Campana raised the question if one can replace the Kodaira dimension by the numerical dimension in this characterization. Q.E.D. for algebraic varieties

We introduce a new equivalence relation, denoted by $A.Q.E.D.$ (= Algebraic-Quasi-Étale- Deformation) for complete algebraic varieties with canonical singularities: it is generated by birational equivalence, by flat algebraic deformations, and by quasi-étale morphisms, i.e., morphisms which are unramified in codimension $1$. $\C$-Q.E.D is the similar relation for compact complex manifolds and spaces. In an earlier work, we investigated some consequences of the existence of a Kähler metric of negative holomorphic sectional curvature on a projective manifold. In the present work, we extend our results to the case of semi-negative (i.e., non-positive) holomorphic sectional curvature. Base spaces of non-isotrivial families of smooth minimal models

Let f: V --> U be a smooth non-isotrivial family of canonically polarized n-dimensional complex manifolds, where U is the complement of a normal crossing divisor S in a projective manifold Y. We show that some symmetric product of the sheaf of one-forms with logarithmic poles along S contains an invertible subsheaf of positive Kodaira dimension.
