Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree,i.e., Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a given variety X is less than or equal to deg(X)-codimension(X)+1. Generic projection methods proved to be effective for the study of regularity of smooth projevtive varieties of dimension at most four(cf.[BM},[K2],[L],[Pi] and [R1]) because there are nice vanishing theorems for cohomology of vector bundles (e.g. the Kodaira-Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem) and detailed information about the fibers ofgeneric projections from X to a hypersurface of the same dimension. Here we show by using methods similar to those used in [K2] that $\reg{X}\le(deg(X)-codimension(X)+1)+10$ for any smooth fivefold and $\reg{X}\le(deg(X)-codimension(X)+1)+20$ for any smooth sixfold.
Furthermore, using similar methods we give a bound for the regularity of an arbitrary (not necessarily locally Cohen-Macaulay) projective surface X in P^N. To wit, we show that $\reg{X}\le(d-e+1)d-(2e+1)$, where d=deg(X) and e=codimension(X). This is the first bound for surfaces which does not depend on smoothness.
The purpose of this article is to show that the Castelnuovo theory for abelian varieties, developed by G. Pareschi and M. Popa, can be infinitesimalized. More precisely, we prove that an irreducible principally polarized abelian variety has a finite scheme in extremal position, in the sense of Castelnuovo theory for abelian varieties, if, and only if, it is a Jacobian and the scheme is contained in a unique Abel-Jacobi curve.
Let $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^r$ be a scroll of codimension $e$ and degree $d$ over a smooth projective curve of genus $g$. The purpose of this paper is to prove a linear Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity bound that reg$(X) \leq d-e+1+g(e-1)$. This bound works over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic.
Inspired by Beauville's recent construction of Ulrich sheaves on abelian surfaces, we pose the question of whether a torsion-free sheaf on a polarized smooth projective variety with Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity 1 is a GV (generic vanishing) sheaf, and present evidence that this question is governed by the positivity of cycles on generalized Brill-Noether loci. We prove that it has an affirmative answer for natural polarizations on many well-known irregular surfaces, as well as some polarizations on ruled threefolds over a curve.
We show that a bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of any power of the ideal sheaf of a smooth projective complex variety $X\subseteq\mathbb{P}^r$ is sharp exactly for complete intersections, provided the variety $X$ is cut out scheme-theoretically by several hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^r$. This generalizes a result of Bertram-Ein-Lazarsfeld.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree. This conjecture is known to be true for curves (Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine) and smooth surfaces (Pinkham, Lazarsfeld), but not in general. The purpose of this paper is to give new bounds for the regularity of smooth varieties in dimensions 3 and 4 that are only slightly worse than the optimal ones suggested by the conjecture. Our method yields new bounds up to dimension 14, but as they ge…
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree,i.e., Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a given variety $X$ is less than or equal to $deg(X)-codim(X)+1$. This regularity conjecture (including classification of examples on the boundary) was verified for integral curves (Castelnuovo, Gruson, Lazarsfeld and Peskine), and for smooth surfaces (Pinkham, Lazarsfeld). In this paper we prove that $reg(X) \le deg(X)-1$ for smooth threefolds $X$ …
The main goal of the paper is to generalize Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for coherent sheaves on projective spaces to coherent sheaves on $n$-dimensional smooth projective varieties $X$ with an $n$-block collection $\cB $ which generates the bounded derived category $\cD ^b({\cO}_X$-$mod)$. To this end, we use the theory of $n$-blocks and Beilinson type spectral sequence to define the notion of regularity of a coherent sheaf $F$ on $X$ with respect to the $n$-block collection $\cB $. We show that the basic formal properties of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of coherent sheaves over proje…
We derive new bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the ideal sheaf of a complex projective manifold of any dimension. They depend linearly on the coefficients of the Hilbert polynomial, and are optimal for rational scrolls, but most likely not for other varieties. Our proof is based on an observation of Lazarsfeld in his approach for surfaces and does not require the (full) projection step. We obtain a bound for each partial linear projection of the given variety, as long as a certain vanishing condition on the fibers of a general projection holds.
The paper begins by overviewing the basic facts on geometric exceptional collections. Then, we derive, for any coherent sheaf $\cF$ on a smooth projective variety with a geometric collection, two spectral sequences: the first one abuts to $\cF$ and the second one to its cohomology. The main goal of the paper is to generalize Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for coherent sheaves on projective spaces to coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties $X$ with a geometric collection $σ$. We define the notion of regularity of a coherent sheaf $\cF$ on $X$ with respect to $σ$. We show that the basic …
Weighted Castelnuovo-Mumford Regularity and Weighted Global GenerationWe introduce and study a notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity suitable for weighted projective spaces.
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of null characteristic and $p(z)$ a Hilbert polynomial. We look for the minimal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $m_{p(z)}$ of closed subschemes of projective spaces over $K$ with Hilbert polynomial $p(z)$. Experimental evidences led us to consider the idea that $m_{p(z)}$ could be achieved by schemes having a suitable minimal Hilbert function. We give a constructive proof of this fact. Moreover, we are able to compute the minimal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $m_p(z)^{\varrho}$ of schemes with Hilbert polynomial $p(z)$ and given regularity $\varrho$ of …
The purpose of this paper is to give a simple geometric construction of ideals whose Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is large compared to the generating degree. Moreover, our ideals have the property that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is revealed as late in the resolution as desired.
The purpose of this paper is to establish a Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity bound for threefolds with mild singularities. Let $X$ be a non-degenerate normal projective threefold in $\mathbb{P}^r$ of degree $d$ and codimension $e$. We prove that if $X$ has rational singularities, then $\text{reg}(X) \leq d-e+2$. Our bound is very close to a sharp bound conjectured by Eisenbud-Goto. When $e=2$ and $X$ has Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois singularities, we obtain the conjectured bound $\text{reg}(X) \leq d-1$, and we also classify the extremal cases. To achieve these results, we bound the regularity of fibe…
In this note, we give a bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a homogeneous ideal $I$ in terms of the degrees of its generators. We assume that $I$ defines a local complete intersection with log canonical singularities.
The behaviour of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity under ``geometric'' transformations is not well understood. In this paper we are concerned with examples which will shed some light on certain questions concerning this behaviour.
We prove and conjecture results which show that Castelnuovo theory in projective space has a close analogue for abelian varieties. This is related to the geometric Schottky problem: our main result is that a principally polarized abelian variety satisfies a precise version of the Castelnuovo Lemma if and only if it is a Jacobian. This result has a surprising connection to the Trisecant Conjecture. We also give a genus bound for curves in abelian varieties.
We study the property of \emph{continuous Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity}, for semihomogeneous vector bundles over a given Abelian variety, which was formulated in \cite{Kuronya:Mustopa:2020} by Küronya and Mustopa. Our main result gives a novel description thereof. It is expressed in terms of certain normalized polynomial functions that are obtained via the Wedderburn decomposition of the Abelian variety's endomorphism algebra. This result builds on earlier work of Mumford and Kempf and applies the form of the Riemann-Roch Theorem that we established in \cite{Grieve:R-R:abVars}. In a compleme…
We define the concept of regularity for bigraded modules and bigraded polynomial ring. In this setting we prove analogs of some of the classical results on $m$-regularity for graded modules over polynomial algebras.
We give the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of arrangements of (n-2)-planes in P^n whose incidence graph is a sufficiently large complete bipartite graph, and determine when such arrangements are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay.
Bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of Ext modules, over a polynomial ring over a field, are given in terms of the initial degrees, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities and number of generators of the two graded modules involved. These general bounds are refined in the case the second module is the ring. Other estimates, for instance on the size of graded pieces of these modules, are given. We also derive a bound on the homological degree in terms of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. This answers positively a question raised by Vasconcelos.
Matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties arising in the Schubert calculus of the complete flag variety. We give a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties, answering a question of Jenna Rajchgot. We follow her proposed strategy of studying the highest-degree homogeneous parts of Grothendieck polynomials, which we call Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. In addition to the regularity formula, we obtain formulas for the degrees of all Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials and for their leading terms, as well as a complete description of when two Castelnuovo-Mumfor…
We establish strong relationships between the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the Ratliff-Rush closure of an ideal. Our results have several interesting consequences on the computation of the Ratliff-Rush closure, the stability of the Ratliff-Rush filtration, the invariance of the reduction number, and the computation of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Rees algebra and the fiber ring. In particular, we prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Rees algebra and of the fiber ring are equal for large classes of monomial ideals in two variables, thereby verifying a conjectu…
The main result of this paper shows that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the tangent cone of a local ring is effectively bounded by the dimension and any extended degree. From this it follows that there are only a finite number of Hilbert-Samuel functions of local rings with given dimension and extended degree.
Projective monomial curves correspond to rings generated by monomials of the same degree in two variables. Such rings always have finite Macaulayfication. We show how to characterize the Buchsbaumness and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these rings by means of their finite Macaulayfication, and we use this method to study the Buchsbaumness and to estimate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of large classes of non-smooth monomial curves in terms of the given monomials.
We establish bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a finitely generated graded module and its symmetric powers in terms of the degrees of the generators of the module and the degrees of their relations. We extend to modules (and improve) the known bounds for homogenous ideal in a polynomial ring established by Galligo, Guisti, Caviglia and Sbarra.
We give examples of nonsingular curves in projective 3 space such that the regularity of powers of their ideal sheaves are highly nonlinear. This is in constrast to the case of an ideal I in a polynomial ring, where the regularity of I^n is a linear polynomial in n for large n.
We will give an upper bound for the $k$-normality of very ample lattice simplices, and then give an Eisenbud-Goto-type bound for some special classes of projective toric varieties.
We prove the regularity conjecture, namely Eisenbud-Goto conjecture, for a normal surface with rational, Gorenstein elliptic and log canonical singularities. Along the way, we bound the regularity for a dimension zero scheme by its Loewy length and for a curve allowing embedded or isolated point components by its arithmetic degree.
Bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Hilbert coefficients are given in terms of the arithmetic degree (if the ring is reduced) or in terms of the defining degrees. From this it follows that there exists only a finite number of Hilbert functions associated to reduced algebras over an algebraically closed field with a given arithmetic degree and dimension. A good bound is also given for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of initial ideals which depends neither on term orders nor on the coordinates, and holds for any field.
We investigate the behavior of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity with respect to some classical functors : Tor, the Frobenius functor in positive characteristic, taking a power or a product (on ideals). These generalizes and refines previous results on these issues by several authors. As an application we provide results on the regularity of an intersection of subschemes of a projective scheme, under appropriate geometric hypotheses. Results on the rigidity of multiple Tor modules and on the characterization of their vanishing are given, motivated by geometric applications.
In this article we establish bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of projective schemes in terms of the degrees of their defining equations. The main new ingredient in our proof is to show that generic residual intersections of complete intersection rational singularities again have rational singularities. When applied to the theory of residual intersections this circle of ideas also sheds new light on some known classes of free resolutions of residual ideals.
Let $A$ be a connected graded $k$-algebra with a balanced dualizing complex. We prove that $A$ is a Koszul AS-regular algebra if and only if that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the Ext-regularity coincide for all finitely generated $A$-modules. This can be viewed as a non-commutative version of \cite[Theorem 1.3]{ro}. By using Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, we prove that any Koszul standard AS-Gorenstein algebra is AS-regular. As a preparation to prove the main result, we also prove the following statements are equivalent: (1) $A$ is AS-Gorenstein; (2) $A$ has finite left injective di…
We show that an inequality, proven by Küronya-Pintye, which governs the behavior of the log-canonical threshold of an ideal over $\mathbb{P}^n$ and that of its Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, can be applied to the setting of principally polarized abelian varieties by substituting the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity with $Θ$-regularity of Pareschi-Popa.
We give a bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a homogeneous ideals I, in a polynomial ring A, in terms of number of variables and the degrees of generators, when the dimension of A/I is at most two. This bound improves the one obtained by Caviglia and Sbarra in this case. In the continuation of the examples constructed by Clare D'Cruz and the first author, we use families of monomial curves to construct homogeneous ideals showing that these bounds are quite sharp.
In this paper we show how, given a complex of graded modules and knowing some partial Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities for all the modules in the complex and for all the positive homologies, it is possible to get a bound on the regularity of the zero homology. We use this to prove that if $\dim \tor_1^R(M,N)\leq1$ then $\reg(M\otimes N)\leq \reg(M)+\reg(N)$, generalizing results of Chandler, Conca and Herzog, and Sidman. Finally we give a description of the regularity of a module in terms of the postulation numbers of filter regular hyperplane restrictions.
In this paper we prove the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture for connected curves. We also investigate the structure of connected curves for which this bound is optimal. In particular, we construct connected curves of arbitrarily high degree in projective 4-space having maximal regularity, but no extremal secants. We also show that any connected curve in projective 3-space of degree at least 5 that has no linear components and has maximal regularity has an extremal secant.
We study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of tangent cones of Schubert varieties. Conjectures about this statistic are presented; these are proved for the covexillary case. This builds on work of L. Li and the author on these tangent cones, as well as that of J. Rajchgot-Y. Ren-C. Robichaux-A. St. Dizier-A. Weigandt and J. Rajchgot-C. Robichaux-A. Weigandt on tableau rules for computing regularity of some matrix Schubert varieties.
We study bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring in terms of the number of variables and the degree of the generators. In particular our aim is to give a positive answer to a question posed by Bayer and Mumford, by showing that the known upper bound in characteristic zero holds true also in positive characteristic. We first analyze Giusti's proof, which provides the result in characteristic 0, giving some insight on the combinatorial properties needed in that context. For the general case we provide a new argument which employs Bayer and Stillma…
As proved recently in [PT], for varieties $X^{r+1}\subset \mathbb P^N$ such that through $n\geq 2$ general points there passes an irreducible curve $C$ of degree $δ\geq n-1$ we have $N\leq π(r,n,δ+r(n-1)+2)$, where $π(r,n,d)$ is the Castelnuovo-Harris bound function for the geometric genus of an irreducible non-degenerate variety $Y^r\subset\mathbb P^{n+r-1}$ of degree $d$. A lot of examples of varieties as in the title and attaining the previous bound for the embedding dimension are constructed from Castelnuovo varieties and were thus dubbed {\it of Castelnuovo type} in [PT], where it is also…
We develop a multigraded variant of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Motivated by toric geometry, we work with modules over a polynomial ring graded by a finitely generated abelian group. As in the standard graded case, our definition of multigraded regularity involves the vanishing of graded components of local cohomology. We establish the key properties of regularity: its connection with the minimal generators of a module and its behavior in exact sequences. For an ideal sheaf on a simplicial toric variety X, we prove that its multigraded regularity bounds the equations that cut out the assoc…
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and any extended degree function can be thought of as complexity measures for the structure of finitely generated graded modules. A recent result of Doering, Gunston, Vasconcelos shows that both can be compared in case of a graded algebra. We extend this result to modules and analyze when the estimate is in fact an equality. A complete classification is obtained if we choose as extended degree the homological or the smallest extended degree. The corresponding algebras are characterized in three ways: by relations among the algebra generators, by using generic ini…
The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity reg(X) of a projective scheme X was introduced by Mumford by generalizing ideas of Castelnuovo. The interest in this concept stems partly from the fact that X is m-regular if and only if for every p \geq 0 the minimal generators of the p-th syzygy module of the defining ideal I of X occur in degree \leq m + p. There are some bounds in the case that X is a locally Cohen-Macaulay scheme. The aim of this paper is to extend and improve these results for so-called (k,r)-Buchsbaum schemes. In order to prove our theorems, we need to apply a spectral sequence. We con…
We show that the ideal of an arrangement of d linear subspaces of projective space is d-regular in the sense of Castelnuovo and Mumford, answering a question of B. Sturmfels. In particular this implies that the ideal of an arrangement of d subspaces is generated in degrees less than or equal to d.
In this paper we give bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of products of ideals and ideal sheaves. In particular, we show that the regularity of a product of ideals is bounded by the sum of the regularities of its factors if the corresponding schemes intersect in a finite set of points. We also show how approximations of sheaves can be used to bound the regularity of an arrangement of two-planes in projective space.
Classical Castelnuovo's Lemma shows that the number of linearly independent quadratic equations of a nondegenerate irreducible projective variety of codimension $c$ is at most ${{c+1} \choose {2}}$ and the equality is attained if and only if the variety is of minimal degree. Also a generalization of Castelnuovo's Lemma by G. Fano implies that the next case occurs if and only if the variety is a del Pezzo variety. For curve case, these results are extended to equations of arbitrary degree respectively by J. Harris and S. L'vovsky. This paper is intended to extend these results to arbitrary dime…
Classical Castelnuovo Lemma shows that the number of linearly independent quadratic equations of a nondegenerate irreducible projective variety of codimension $c$ is at most ${{c+1} \choose {2}}$ and the equality is attained if and only if the variety is of minimal degree. Also G. Fano's generalization of Castelnuovo Lemma implies that the next case occurs if and only if the variety is a del Pezzo variety. Recently, these results are extended to the next case. This paper is intended to complete the classification of varieties satisfying at least ${{c+1} \choose {2}}-3$ linearly independent qua…
The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a module gives a rough measure of its complexity. We bound the regularity of a module given a system of approximating modules whose regularities are known. Such approximations can arise naturally for modules constructed by inductive combinatorial means. We apply these methods to bound the regularity of ideals constructed as combinations of linear ideals and the module of derivations of a hyperplane arrangement as well as to give degree bounds for invariants of finite groups.
In this paper we show that the sets of $F$-jumping coefficients of ideals form discrete sets in certain graded $F$-finite rings. We do so by giving a criterion based on linear bounds for the growth of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain ideals. We further show that these linear bounds exists for one-dimensional rings and for ideals of (most) two-dimensional domains. We conclude by applying our technique to prove that all sets of $F$-jumping coefficients of all ideals in the determinantal ring given as the quotient by $2\times 2$ minors in a $2\times 3$ matrix of indeterminates form d…
Inspired by a theorem of Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of curves in projective spaces, we bound the Theta-regularity of curves in polarized abelian varieties.
We describe a parallel polynomial time algorithm for computing the topological Betti numbers of a smooth complex projective variety $X$. It is the first single exponential time algorithm for computing the Betti numbers of a significant class of complex varieties of arbitrary dimension. Our main theoretical result is that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the sheaf of differential $p$-forms on $X$ is bounded by $p(em+1)D$, where $e$, $m$, and $D$ are the maximal codimension, dimension, and degree, respectively, of all irreducible components of $X$. It follows that, for a union $V$ of generi…
The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity r of a complex, projective variety V is an upper bound for the degrees of the hypersurfaces necessary to cut out V. In this note we give a bound for r when V is left invariant by a vector field on the ambient projective space. More precisely, assume V is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, for instance, a complete intersection. Assume as well that V projects to a normal-crossings hypersurface, which is the case when V is a curve with at most ordinary nodes. Then we show that r<m+s+2, where s is the dimension of V and m is the degree of the vector field. Our method…
In this paper, we consider $\mathbb{Z}^{r}-$graded modules on the $\mathrm{Cl}(X)$ $-$graded Cox ring $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},\dotsc,x_{r}]$ of a smooth complete toric variety $X$. Using the theory of Klyachko filtrations in the reflexive case, we construct a collection of lattice polytopes codifying the multigraded Hilbert function of the module. We apply this approach to reflexive $\mathbb{Z}^{s+r+2}$-graded modules over non-standard bigraded polynomial rings $\mathbb{C}[x_{0},\dotsc,x_{s},y_{0},\dotsc,y_{r}]$. In this case, we give sharp bounds for the multigraded regularity index of their multig…
