Projective monomial curves correspond to rings generated by monomials of the same degree in two variables. Such rings always have finite Macaulayfication. We show how to characterize the Buchsbaumness and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these rings by means of their finite Macaulayfication, and we use this method to study the Buchsbaumness and to estimate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of large classes of non-smooth monomial curves in terms of the given monomials.

In this paper we show how, given a complex of graded modules and knowing some partial Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities for all the modules in the complex and for all the positive homologies, it is possible to get a bound on the regularity of the zero homology. We use this to prove that if $\dim \tor_1^R(M,N)\leq1$ then $\reg(M\otimes N)\leq \reg(M)+\reg(N)$, generalizing results of Chandler, Conca and Herzog, and Sidman. In particular, we show that the regularity of a product of ideals is bounded by the sum of the regularities of its factors if the corresponding schemes intersect in a finite set of points. We estimate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of ideals in a polynomial ring over a field by studying the regularity of certain modules generated in degree zero and with linear relations. The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a module gives a rough measure of its complexity. We bound the regularity of a module given a system of approximating modules whose regularities are known. Such approximations can arise naturally for modules constructed by inductive combinatorial means. We apply these methods to bound the regularity of ideals constructed as combinations of linear ideals and the module of derivations of a hyperplane arrangement as well as to give degree bounds for invariants of finite groups.
