We introduce a new equivalence relation, denoted by $A.Q.E.D.$ (= Algebraic-Quasi-Étale- Deformation) for complete algebraic varieties with canonical singularities: it is generated by birational equivalence, by flat algebraic deformations, and by quasi-étale morphisms, i.e., morphisms which are unramified in codimension $1$. $\C$-Q.E.D is the similar relation for compact complex manifolds and spaces. By a recent theorem of Siu dimension and Kodaira dimension are invariants for $A.Q.E.D.$. The question whether conversely two algebraic varieties of the same dimension and with the same Kodaira dimension are Q.E.D. -equivalent has a positive answer for curves and using Enriques' classification we show that the answer to the $\C$-Q.E.D. question is positive for special algebraic surfaces (Kodaira dimension at most $1$) and for compact complex surfaces with Kodaira dimension $0, 1$ and even first Betti number. The appendix by Sönke Rollenske shows that the same does not hold if we allow odd first Betti number( Kodaira surfaces form a single class). The answer to the A.Q.E.D. question is yes for special complex algebraic surfaces, while the appendix due to Fritz Grunewald shows that the answer is no for surfaces of general type. Because the (rigid) Kuga-Shavel type surfaces of general type obtained as quotients of the bidisk via discrete groups constructed from quaternion algebras belong to countably many distinct Q.E.D. equivalence classes.
In this paper the authors study quotients of the product of elliptic curves by a rigid diagonal action of a finite group $G$. It is shown that only for $G = \operatorname{He(3)}, \mathbb Z_3^2$, and only for dimension $\geq 4$ such an action can be free. A complete classification of the singular quotients in dimension 3 and the smooth quotients in dimension $4$ is given. For the other finite groups a strong structure theorem for rigid quotients is proven.
In this paper, we study the growth of the number of fixed points from iterating an endomorphism of an abelian variety. Using the estimates obtained on an abelian variety, we are able to extend the results to endomorphisms on varieties of Kodaira dimension zero and more generally their periodic subvarieties.
We prove that the Kodaira dimension of the n-fold universal family of lattice-polarized holomorphic symplectic varieties with dominant and generically finite period map stabilizes to the moduli number when n is sufficiently large. Then we study the transition of Kodaira dimension explicitly, from negative to nonnegative, for known explicit families of polarized symplectic varieties. In particular, we determine the exact transition point in the cases of Beauville-Donagi and Debarre-Voisin, where the Borcherds Phi_{12} form plays a crucial role.
We prove a strengthening of Kollár's Ampleness Lemma and use it to prove that any proper coarse moduli space of stable log-varieties of general type is projective. We also prove subadditivity of log-Kodaira dimension for fiber spaces whose general fiber is of log general type.
Based on the celebrated result on zeros of holomorphic 1-forms on complex varieties of general type by Popa and Schnell, we study holomorphic 1-forms on $n$-dimensional varieties of Kodaira dimension $n-1$. We show that a complex minimal smooth projective variety $X$ of Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=\dim X-1$ admits a holomorphic 1-form without zero if and only if there is a smooth morphism from $X$ to an elliptic curve. Furthermore, for a general smooth projective variety (not necessarily minimal) $X$ of Kodaira codimension one, we give a structure theorem for $X$ given that $X$ admits a holomorphi…
We correct the proof and slightly strengthen a Kodaira-type vanishing theorem for singular varieties originally due to Jaffe and the first author. Specifically, we show that if $L$ is a nef and big line bundle on a projective variety of characteristic zero, the $i^{\text{th}}$ cohomology of $L^{-1}$ vanishes for $i$ in a range determined by the depth and dimension of the singular locus.
In this paper we will prove a uniformity result for the Iitaka fibration $f:X \rightarrow Y$, provided that the generic fiber has a good minimal model and the variation of $f$ is zero or that $κ(X)=\rm{dim}(X)-1$.
The article has two parts. The first part is devoted to proving a singular version of the logarithmic Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano vanishing theorem of Esnault and Viehweg. This is then used to prove other vanishing theorems. In the second part these vanishing theorems are used to prove an Arakelov-Parshin type boundedness result for families of canonically polarized varieties with rational Gorenstein singularities.
We show that the Kodaira vanishing theorem can fail on smooth Fano varieties of any characteristic p > 0. Taking cones over some of these varieties, we give the first examples of terminal singularities which are not Cohen-Macaulay. By a different method, we construct a terminal singularity of dimension 3 (the lowest possible) in characteristic 2 which is not Cohen-Macaulay.
We consider the moduli space $A_{pol}(n)$ of (non-principally) polarised abelian varieties of genus $g\geq3$ with coprime polarisation and full level-$n$ structure. Based upon the analysis of the Tits building in math/0405321, we give an explicit lower bound on $n$ that is sufficient for the compactified moduli space to be of general type if one further explicit condition is satisfied.
The Kodaira energy of a polarized manifold (M,L) is defined by κε(M,L)=-Inf{t\in Q|κ(K+tL)\ge 0}. Here we propose a couple of conjectures and announce several partial results. 3-dimensional cases are mainly considered. A hard copy is available on request to the author.
We prove that every compact Kähler threefold $X$ of Kodaira dimension $κ= 0$ or $1$ has a $\mathbf{Q}$-factorial bimeromorphic model $X'$ with at worst terminal singularities such that for each curve $C \subset X'$, the pair $(X',C)$ admits a locally trivial algebraic approximation such that the restriction of the deformation of $X'$ to some neighborhood of $C$ is a trivial deformation. As an application, we prove that every compact Kähler threefold with $κ= 0$ or $1$ has an algebraic approximation.
Let $V$ be a complex algebraic variety, homogeneous under the action of a complex algebraic group. We show that the log Kodaira dimension of $V$ is non-negative if and only if $V$ is a semi-abelian variety.
We discuss the birational geometry and the Kodaira dimension of certain varieties previously constructed by Schreieder, proving that in any dimension they admit an elliptic fibration and they are not of general type. The $l$-dimensional variety $Y_n^l$, which is the quotient of the product of a certain curve $C_n$ by itself $l$ times by a group $G\simeq\left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^{l-1}$ of automorphisms, was constructed by Schreieder to obtain varieties with prescribed Hodge numbers. If $n=3^c$ Schreieder constructed an explicit smooth birational model of it, and Flapan proved: the Kod…
We prove that for any even lattice L of signature (2,n), the modular variety defined by the orthogonal group of the lattice L+mE_8 is of general type when m is sufficiently large.
We study pluricanonical systems on smooth projective varieties of positive Kodaira dimension, following the approach of Hacon-McKernan, Takayama and Tsuji succesfully used in the case of varieties of general type. We prove a uniformity result for the Iitaka fibration of smooth projective varieties of positive Kodaira dimension, provided that the base of the Iitaka fibration is not uniruled, the variation of the fibration is maximal, and the generic fiber has a good minimal model.
The Kodaira dimension of Shimura varieties has been studied by many people. Kondo and Gritsenko-Hulek-Sankaran studied the singularities of orthogonal Shimura varieties related to the moduli spaces of polarized K3 surfaces. They proved that they have canonical singularities and are of general type if the polarization degree is sufficiently large. In this paper, we work on similar problems for unitary Shimura varieties. We show that they have canonical singularities if $n > 4$. As an application, we show that certain unitary Shimura varieties associated with Hermitian forms over the rings of in…
Campana introduced the class of special varieties as the varieties admitting no Bogomolov sheaves i.e. rank one coherent subsheaves of maximal Kodaira dimension in some exterior power of the cotangent bundle. Campana raised the question if one can replace the Kodaira dimension by the numerical dimension in this characterization. We answer partially this question showing that a projective manifold admitting a rank one coherent subsheaf of the cotangent bundle with numerical dimension 1 is not special. We also establish the analytic characterization with the non-existence of Zariski dense entire…
We prove that a holomorphic line bundle on a projective manifold is pseudo-effective if and only if its degree on any member of a covering family of curves is non-negative. This is a consequence of a duality statement between the cone of pseudo-effective divisors and the cone of ``movable curves'', which is obtained from a general theory of movable intersections and approximate Zariski decomposition for closed positive (1,1)-currents. As a corollary, a projective manifold has a pseudo-effective canonical bundle if and only if it is is not uniruled. We also prove that a 4-fold with a canonical …
Kodaira fibred surfaces are a remarkable example of projective classifying spaces, and there are still many intriguing open questions concerning them, especially the slope question. The topological characterization of Kodaira fibrations is emblematic of the use of topological methods in the study of moduli spaces of surfaces and higher dimensional complex algebraic varieties, and their compactifications. The paper contains some new results but is mostly a survey paper, dealing with fibrations, questions on monodromy and factorizations in the mapping class group, old and new results on Variatio…
Let L be an ample line bundle on a log variety (V, D) having only log terminal singularities. The Kodaira energy of such a triple (V, D, L) is defined as follows: κε=-Inf{t\in Q | K(V,D)+tL is big}. Here K(V,D)=K_V+D is the log canonical bundle of (V,D) and "big" means κ=dim V. We first show that the rationality of κε, when it is negative, follows from log Flip theorems (thus it is proved for dim V\le 3 at present). Second we consider the case in which D=0, dim V=3 and V has only terminal singularities. Let S be the set of all the possible values of Kodaira energies of such polarized log threef…
We study the enumerative geometry of the moduli space R_g of Prym varieties of dimension g-1 (also known as the space of admissible double covers). Our main result is that the compactification of R_g is of general type as soon as g>13. We achieve this by computing the class of two types of cycles on R_g: one defined in terms of Koszul cohomology of Prym curves, the other defined in terms of Raynaud theta divisors associated to certain vector bundles on curves. We formulate a Prym-Green conjecture on syzygies of Prym-canonical curves. In the appendix we show that even though R_g has non-canonic…
An n-dimensional complex manifold M is said to be (holomorphically) dominable by $\CC^n$ if there is a map $F:\CC^n \ra M$ which is holomorphic such that the Jacobian determinant $\det(DF)$ is not identically zero. Such a map F is called a dominating map. In this paper, we attempt to classify algebraic surfaces X which are dominable by $\CC^2$ using a combination of techniques from algebraic topology, complex geometry and analysis. One of the key tools in the study of algebraic surfaces is the notion of Kodaira dimension (defined in section 2). By Kodaira's pioneering work and its extensions, …
Suppose that A and B are symplectomorphic smooth affine varieties. If A is acylic of dimension 2 then B has the same log Kodaira dimension as A. If the dimension of A is 3, has log Kodaira dimension 2 and satisfies some other conditions then B cannot be of log general type. We also show that if A and B are symplectomorphic affine varieties of any dimension then any compactification of A by a projective variety is uniruled if and only if any such compactification of B is uniruled.
A classical result in complex geometry says that the automorphism group of a manifold of general type is discrete. It is more generally true that there are only finitely many surjective morphisms between two fixed projective manifolds of general type. Rigidity of surjective morphisms, and the failure of a morphism to be rigid have been studied by a number of authors in the past. The main result of this paper states that surjective morphisms are always rigid, unless there is a clear geometric reason for it. More precisely, we can say the following. First, deformations of surjective morphisms be…
I propose a few increasingly stronger "superadditivity" conjectures regarding the behavior of Kodaira dimension under morphisms of smooth quasi-projective complex varieties.
We prove that up to scaling there are only finitely many integral lattices L of signature (2,n) with n>20 or n=17 such that the modular variety defined by the orthogonal group of L is not of general type. In particular, when n>107, every modular variety defined by an arithmetic group for a rational quadratic form of signature (2,n) is of general type. We also obtain similar finiteness in n>8 for the stable orthogonal groups. As a byproduct we derive finiteness of lattices admitting reflective modular form of bounded vanishing order, which proves a conjecture of Gritsenko and Nikulin.
A Kodaira fibration is a non-isotrivial fibration $f\colon S\rightarrow B$ from a smooth algebraic surface $S$ to a smooth algebraic curve $B$ such that all fibers are smooth algebraic curves of genus $g$. Such fibrations arise as complete curves inside the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of genus $g$ algebraic curves. We investigate here the possible connected monodromy groups of a Kodaira fibration in the case $g=3$ and classify which such groups can arise from a Kodaira fibration obtained as a general complete intersection curve inside a subvariety of $\mathcal{M}_3$ parametrizing curves whose…
Assuming Lang's conjecture, we prove that for a fixed prime $p$, number field $K$, and positive integer $g$, there is an integer $r$ such that no principally polarized abelian variety $A/K$ of dimension $g$ has full level $p^r$ structure. To this end, we use a result of Zuo to prove that for each closed subvariety $X$ in the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, there exists a level $m_X$ such that the irreducible components of the preimage of $X$ in $\mathcal{A}_g^{[m]}$ are of general type for $m > m_X$.
Applying the Second Main Theorem we deal with the algebraic degeneracy of entire holomorphic curves from the complex plane into a complex algebraic normal variety of positive log Kodaira dimension that admits a finite proper morphism to a semi-abelian variety. We will also discuss applications to the Kobayashi hyperbolicity problem.
It is in general unknown which topological complex vector bundles on a non-algebraic surface admit holomorphic structures. We solve this problem for primary Kodaira surfaces by using results of Kani on curves of genus two with elliptic differentials. Some of the corresponding moduli spaces will be smooth compact and holomorphically symplectic.
We show that every holomorphic one-form on a smooth complex projective variety of general type must vanish at some point. The proof uses generic vanishing theory for Hodge D-modules on abelian varieties.
We show that for a surjective, separable morphism f of smooth projective varieties over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic such that $f_* \mathcal{O}_X = \mathcal{O}_Y$ subadditivity of Kodaira dimension holds, provided the base is of general type and the Hasse-Witt matrix of the geometric general fiber is not nilpotent.
We prove that the variation in a smooth projective family of varieties admitting a good minimal model forms a lower bound for the Kodaira dimension of the base, if the dimension of the base is at most five and its Kodaira dimension is non-negative. This gives an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Kebekus and Kovacs for base spaces of dimension at most five.
We add further notions to Lehmann's list of numerical analogues to the Kodaira dimension of pseudo-effective divisors on smooth complex projective varieties, and show new relations between them. Then we use these notions and relations to fill in a gap in Lehmann's arguments, thus proving that most of these notions are equal. Finally, we show that the Abundance Conjecture, as formulated in the context of the Minimal Model Program, and the Generalized Abundance Conjecture using these numerical analogues to the Kodaira dimension, are equivalent for non-uniruled complex projective varieties.
Given an embedded smooth projective variety Y in CP^n, we show how the existence of a hypersurface with high multiplicity along Y, but of relatively low degree and log canonical near Y implies vanishing of higher cohomology for certain twists of powers of the ideal sheaf of Y. This is applied to get rather non-trivial vanishing in case Y is a universal determinantal variety (i.e. quadratic Veronese, Segre embedding or Grassmannian of P^1's) or a curve embedded by a complete linear series of high degree. The key in the determinantal cases is to use the theory of complete objects. While the theo…
A generically generated vector bundle on a smooth projective variety yields a rational map to a Grassmannian, called Kodaira map. We answer a previous question, raised by the asymptotic behaviour of such maps, giving rise to a birational characterization of abelian varieties. In particular we prove that, under the conjectures of the Minimal Model Program, a smooth projective variety is birational to an abelian variety if and only if it has Kodaira dimension 0 and some symmetric power of its cotangent sheaf is generically generated by its global sections.
The moduli space of polarised K3 surfaces of degree 2d is a quasi-projective variety of dimension 19. For general d very little has been known about the Kodaira dimension of these varieties. In this paper we present an almost complete solution to this problem. Our main result says that this moduli space is of general type for d>61 and for d=46,50,54,58,60.
We prove that for a compact Kähler threefold with canonical singularities and vanishing first Chern class, the projective fibres are dense in the semiuniversal deformation space. This implies that every Kähler threefold of Kodaira dimension zero admits small projective deformations after a suitable bimeromorphic modification. As a corollary, we see that the fundamental group of any Kähler threefold is a quotient of an extension of fundamental groups of projective manifolds, up to subgroups of finite index. In the course of the proof, we show that for a canonical threefold with $c_1 = 0$, the A…
Shafarevich's hyperbolicity conjecture asserts that a family of curves over a quasi-projective 1-dimensional base is isotrivial unless the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of the base is positive. More generally it has been conjectured by Viehweg that the base of a smooth family of canonically polarized varieties is of log general type if the family is of maximal variation. In this paper, we relate the variation of a family to the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of the base and give an affirmative answer to Viehweg's conjecture for families parametrized by surfaces.
