In this paper the authors study quotients of the product of elliptic curves by a rigid diagonal action of a finite group $G$. It is shown that only for $G = \operatorname{He(3)}, \mathbb Z_3^2$, and only for dimension $\geq 4$ such an action can be free. A complete classification of the singular quotients in dimension 3 and the smooth quotients in dimension $4$ is given. For the other finite groups a strong structure theorem for rigid quotients is proven.

We study the enumerative geometry of the moduli space R_g of Prym varieties of dimension g-1 (also known as the space of admissible double covers). Our main result is that the compactification of R_g is of general type as soon as g>13. We achieve this by computing the class of two types of cycles on R_g: one defined in terms of Koszul cohomology of Prym curves, the other defined in terms of Raynaud theta divisors associated to certain vector bundles on curves. We add further notions to Lehmann's list of numerical analogues to the Kodaira dimension of pseudo-effective divisors on smooth complex projective varieties, and show new relations between them. Then we use these notions and relations to fill in a gap in Lehmann's arguments, thus proving that most of these notions are equal. A generically generated vector bundle on a smooth projective variety yields a rational map to a Grassmannian, called Kodaira map. We answer a previous question, raised by the asymptotic behaviour of such maps, giving rise to a birational characterization of abelian varieties. In particular we prove that, under the conjectures of the Minimal Model Program, a smooth projective variety is birational to an abelian variety if and only if it has Kodaira dimension 0 and some symmetric power of its cotangent sheaf is generically generated by its global sections.
This is a survey article about Siegel modular varieties over the complex numbers. It is written mostly from the point of view of moduli of abelian varieties, especially surfaces. We cover compactification of Siegel modular varieties; classification of the compactified varieties by Kodaira dimension, etc.; moduli of abelian surfaces and especially applications of the lifting of Jacobi forms to modular forms; projective models of some special Siegel modular 3-folds; non-principally polarized abelian surfaces; and constructing degenerating families of abelian varieties.

Shafarevich's hyperbolicity conjecture asserts that a family of curves over a quasi-projective 1-dimensional base is isotrivial unless the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of the base is positive. More generally it has been conjectured by Viehweg that the base of a smooth family of canonically polarized varieties is of log general type if the family is of maximal variation. In this paper, we relate the variation of a family to the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of the base and give an affirmative answer to Viehweg's conjecture for families parametrized by surfaces.

These are the notes from a survey talk given at Arbeitstagung 2001 covering the author's work with Lev Borisov and Sorin Popescu on toric varieties, modular forms, and equations of modular curves.
We discuss rigid compact complex manifolds of Kodaira dimension 1, arising as product-quotient varieties. First, we show that there is no free rigid action on the product of $(n-1)$ elliptic curves and a curve of genus at least two. Then, we describe the occurring groups, study the quotients and prove that there is always a suitable resolution of singularities preserving rigidity. Finally, we give a complete classification of the cases arising for minimal group orders.
The fundamental group of a smooth projective variety is fibered if it maps onto the fundamental group of smooth curve of genus 2 or more. The goal of this paper is to establish some strong restrictions on these groups, and in particular on the fundamental groups of Kodaira surfaces. In the specific case of a Kodaira surface, these results are in the form of restrictions on the monodromy representation into the mapping class group. When the monodromy is composed with certain standard representations, the images are Zariski dense in a semisimple group of Hermitian type.
