We discuss the construction of toric Kaehler metrics on symplectic 2n-manifolds with a hamiltonian n-torus action and present a simple derivation of the Guillemin formula for a distinguished Kaehler metric on any such manifold. The results also apply to orbifolds.
In this short note, we prove that a Calabi extremal Kaehler-Ricci soliton on a compact toric Kaehler manifold is Einstein. This solves for the class of toric manifolds a general problem stated by the authors that they solved only under some curvature assumptions.
It is proved that an homogeneous toric bundles over a flag manifold G^\C/P admits a Kaehler-Ricci solitonic metric if and only if it is Fano. In particular, an homogeneous toric bundle of this kind is Kaehler-Einstein if and only if it is Fano and its Futaki invariant vanishes identically.
Let $M$ be a projective toric manifold. We prove two results concerning respectively Kaehler-Einstein submanifolds of M and symplectic embeddings of the standard euclidean ball in M. Both results use the well-known fact that M contains an open dense subset biholomorphic to C^n.
We present a classification of compact Kaehler manifolds admitting a hamiltonian 2-form (which were classified locally in part I of this work). This involves two components of independent interest. The first is the notion of a rigid hamiltonian torus action. This natural condition, for torus actions on a Kaehler manifold, was introduced locally in part I, but such actions turn out to be remarkably well behaved globally, leading to a fairly explicit classification: up to a blow-up, compact Kaehler manifolds with a rigid hamiltonian torus action are bundles of toric Kaehler manifolds. The second…
We provide an explicit resolution of the existence problem for extremal Kaehler metrics on toric 4-orbifolds M with second Betti number b2(M)=2. More precisely we show that M admits such a metric if and only if its rational Delzant polytope (which is a labelled quadrilateral) is K-polystable in the relative, toric sense (as studied by S. Donaldson, E. Legendre, G. Szekelyhidi et al.). Furthermore, in this case, the extremal Kaehler metric is ambitoric, i.e., compatible with a conformally equivalent, oppositely oriented toric Kaehler metric, which turns out to be extremal as well. These results…
Let $X$ be a complex toric Fano $n$-fold and ${\cal N}(T)$ the normalizer of a maximal torus $T$ in the group of biholomorphic authomorphisms $Aut(X)$. We call $X$ {\em symmetric} if the trivial character is a single ${\cal N}(T)$-invariant algebraic character of $T$. Using an invariant $α_G(X)$ introduced by Tian, we show that all symmetric toric Fano $n$-folds admit an Einstein-Kähler metric. We remark that so far one doesn't know any example of a toric Fano $n$-fold $X$ such that $Aut(X)$ is reductive, the Futaki character of $X$ vanishes, but $X$ is not symmetric.
Using the short time existence of the Calabi flow, we prove that any extremal Kaehler metric on a product toric variety is a product extremal Kaehler metric.
This is the first of a sequence of two papers. Here, a simple algebraic characterization of the Fano manifolds in the class of homogeneous toric bundles over a flag manifold G^C/P is provided in terms of symplectic data. The result of this paper is used in the second paper, where it is proved that an homogeneous toric bundle over a flag manifold admits a Kaehler-Ricci solitonic metric if and only if it is Fano.
We extend a recent result of Burns, Guillemin and Uribe on the asymptotics of the spectral measure for the reduction metric on a toric variety to any toric metric on a toric variety. We show how this extended result together with the Tian-Yau-Zelditch asymptotic expansion can be used to deduce Abreu's formula for the scalar curvature of a toric metric on a toric variety in terms of polytope data.
This note is a step towards demonstrating the benefits of a symplectic approach to studying equivariant Kähler geometry. We apply a local differential geometric framework from Kähler toric geometry due to Guillemin & Abreu to the case of the standard linear $\SU(n)$ action on $\bbC^n\setminus\{0\}$. Using this framework we (re)construct a scalar-flat Kähler metric on the blow-up of $\bbC^n$ at the origin from data on the moment polytope.
An important question with a rich history is the extent to which the symplectic category is larger than the Kaehler category. Many interesting examples of non-Kaehler symplectic manifolds have been constructed. However, sufficiently large symmetries can force a symplectic manifold to be Kaehler. In this paper, we solve several outstanding problems by constructing the first symplectic manifold with large non-trivial symmetries which does not admit an invariant Kaehler structure. The proof that it is not Kaehler is based on the Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg convexity theorem. Using the ideas of thi…
As seen in the works of Calabi, Cheng-Yau and Loftin, affine sphere equations have a close relationship with Kaehler-Einstein metrics. The main purpose of this note is to show that an equation analogous to those of hyperbolic affine spheres arises naturally from Kaehler-Einstein metrics on Einstein toric surfaces. The case for the remaining toric surfaces with Kaehler-Ricci solitons will also be discussed.
Recently Guillemin gave an explicit combinatorial way of constructing "toric" Kahler metrics on (symplectic) toric varieties, using only data on the moment polytope. In this paper, differential geometric properties of these metrics are investigated using Guillemin's construction. In particular, a nice combinatorial formula for the scalar curvature is given, and the Euler-Lagrange condition for such "toric" metrics being extremal (in the sense of Calabi) is derived. A construction, due to Calabi, of a 1-parameter family of extremal metrics of non-constant scalar curvature is recast very simply …
Let $X$ be a toric variety and $u$ be a normalized symplectic potential of the corresponding polytope $P$. Suppose that the Riemannian curvature is bounded by 1 and $ \int_{\partial P} u ~ d σ< C_1, $ then there exists a constant $C_2$ depending only on $C_1$ and $P$ such that $\max_P u < C_2$. As an application, we show that if $(X,P)$ is analytic uniform $K$-stable, then the modified Calabi flow converges to an extremal metric exponentially fast by assuming that the Riemannian curvature is uniformly bounded along the Calabi flow. Also we provide a proof of a conjecture of Donaldson. Finally,…
We give a generalization of toric symplectic geometry to Poisson manifolds which are symplectic away from a collection of hypersurfaces forming a normal crossing configuration. We introduce the tropical momentum map, which takes values in a generalization of affine space called a log affine manifold. Using this momentum map, we obtain a complete classification of such manifolds in terms of decorated log affine polytopes, hence extending the classification of symplectic toric manifolds achieved by Atiyah, Guillemin-Sternberg, Kostant, and Delzant.
In \cite{btoric}, Guillemin et al. proved a Delzant-type theorem which classifies $b$-symplectic toric manifolds. More generally, in \cite{torus} they proved a similar convexity result for general Hamiltonian torus action on $b$-symplectic manifolds. In this paper, we provide a new way to construct $b$-symplectic toric manifolds from usual toric manifolds. Conversely, through this way, we can also decompose a $b$-symplectic toric manifolds to usual toric manifolds. Finally, we will try to prove that this kind of decomposition is useful, although the symplectic structure for our decomposition o…
We study the half-form Kaehler quantization of a smooth symplectic toric manifold $(X,ω)$, such that $[ω/2π]-c_{1}(X)/2 \in H^{2}(X,{\mathbb{Z}})$ and is nonnegative. We define the half-form corrected quantization of $(X,ω)$ to be given by holomorphic sections of a certain hermitian line bundle $L\rightarrow X$ with Chern class $[ω/ 2π]-c_{1}(X)/2$. These sections then correspond to integral points of a "corrected" polytope $P_{L}$ with integral vertices. For a suitably translated moment polytope $P_{X}$ for $(X,ω)$, we have that $P_{L}\subset P_{X}$ is obtained from $P_{X}$ by a one-half inwa…
A symplectic cut of a manifold M with a Hamiltonian circle action is a symplectic quotient of M x C. If M is Kaehler then, since C is Kaehler, the cut space is Kaehler as well. The symplectic structure on the cut is well understood. In this paper we describe the complex structure (and hence the metric) on the cut. We then generalize the construction to the case where M has a torus action and C is replaced by a toric Kaehler manifold.
Anti-diagonal toric generalized K$\ddot{a}$hler structures of symplectic type on a compact toric symplectic manifold were investigated in \cite{Wang2} . In this article, we consider \emph{general} toric generalized K$\ddot{a}$hler structures of symplectic type, without requiring them to be anti-diagonal. Such a structure is characterized by a triple $(τ, C, F)$ where $τ$ is a strictly convex function defined in the interior of the moment polytope $Δ$ and $C, F$ are two constant anti-symmetric matrices. We prove that underlying each such a structure is a \emph{canonical} toric K$\ddot{a}$hler s…
Let M be a Kaehler manifold with a free, holomorphic and Hamiltonian action of the standard n-torus T. We give a simple, explicit and canonical formula for the Kaehler potential on the Kaehler reduction of M. As a consequence we can derive improvements of several classical results known for more general Hamiltonian reductions. Among these are a forms-level proof of the Duistermaat-Heckman theorem; an elementary proof of Atiyah's proof of the convexity of the moment image of a complexified T-orbit; another formula due to Biquard-Gauduchon for the Kaehler potential; and a formula in terms of mom…
In the same way that a contact manifold determines and is determined by a symplectic cone, a Sasaki manifold determines and is determined by a suitable Kahler cone. Kahler-Sasaki geometry is the geometry of these cones. This paper presents a symplectic action-angle coordinates approach to toric Kahler geometry and how it was recently generalized, by Burns-Guillemin-Lerman and Martelli-Sparks-Yau, to toric Kahler-Sasaki geometry. It also describes, as an application, how this approach can be used to relate a recent new family of Sasaki-Einstein metrics constructed by Gauntlett-Martelli-Sparks-W…
We introduce the notion of a hamiltonian 2-form on a Kaehler manifold and obtain a complete local classification. This notion appears to play a pivotal role in several aspects of Kaehler geometry. In particular, on any Kaehler manifold with co-closed Bochner tensor, the (suitably normalized) Ricci form is hamiltonian, and this leads to an explicit description of these Kaehler metrics, which we call weakly Bochner-flat. Hamiltonian 2-forms draw attention to a general construction of Kaehler metrics which interpolates between toric geometry and Calabi-like constructions of metrics on (projective…
In this note we report on examples of 7- and 8-dimensional toric Fano manifolds that are not symmetric and still admit a Kaehler-Einstein metric. This answers a question first posed by V.V. Batyrev and E. Selivanova. The examples were found in the classification of toric Fano manifolds up to dimension 8 obtained by M. Oebro. We also discuss related open questions and conjectures.
We give an explicit local classification of conformally equivalent but oppositely oriented Kaehler metrics on a 4-manifold which are toric with respect to a common 2-torus action. In the generic case, these structures have an intriguing local geometry depending on a quadratic polynomial and two arbitrary functions of one variable, these two functions being explicit degree 4 polynomials when the Kaehler metrics are extremal (in the sense of Calabi). One motivation for and application of this result is an explicit local description of Einstein 4-manifolds which are hermitian with respect to eith…
We prove a conjecture saying that complex projective space has maximal volume (degree) among all toric Kaehler-Einstein manifolds of dimension n. The proof is inspired by our recent work on sharp Moser-Trudinger and Brezis-Merle type inequalities for the complex Monge-Ampere operator, but is essentially self-contained.
We show that any compact convex simple lattice polytope is the moment polytope of a Kähler-Einstein orbifold, unique up to orbifold covering and homothety. We extend the Wang-Zhu Theorem \cite{WZ} giving the existence of a Kähler-Ricci soliton on any toric monotone manifold on any compact convex simple labelled polytope satisfying the combinatoric condition corresponding to monotonicity. We obtain that any compact convex simple polytope $P\subset \bR^n$ admits a set of inward normals, unique up to dilatation, such that there exists a symplectic potential satisfying the Guillemin boundary condi…
The third del Pezzo surface admits a unique Kaehler-Einstein metric, which is not known in closed form. The manifold's toric structure reduces the Einstein equation to a single Monge-Ampere equation in two real dimensions. We numerically solve this nonlinear PDE using three different algorithms, and describe the resulting metric. The first two algorithms involve simulation of Ricci flow, in complex and symplectic coordinates respectively. The third algorithm involves turning the PDE into an optimization problem on a certain space of metrics, which are symplectic analogues of the "algebraic" me…
In this paper I construct, using off the shelf components, a compact symplectic manifold with a non-trivial Hamiltonian circle action that admits no Kaehler structure. The non-triviality of the action is guaranteed by the existence of an isolated fixed point. The motivation for this work comes from the program of classification of Hamiltonian group actions. The Audin-Ahara-Hattori-Karshon classification of Hamiltonian circle actions on compact symplectic 4-manifolds showed that all of such manifolds are Kaehler. Delzant's classification of $2n$-dimensional symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian…
We derive a formula for the L^2 norm of the scalar curvature of any extremal Kaehler metric on a compact toric manifold, stated purely in terms of the geometry of the corresponding moment polytope. The main interest of this formula pertains to the case of complex dimension 2, where it plays a key role in construction of Bach-flat metrics on appropriate 4-manifolds.
We study a system of equations on a compact complex manifold, that couples the scalar curvature of a Kaehler metric with a spectral function of a first-order deformation of the complex structure. The system comes from an infinite-dimensional Kaehler reduction, which is a hyperkaehler reduction for a particular choice of the spectral function. The system can be formally complexified using a flat connection on the space of first-order deformations that are compatible with a Kaehler metric. We describe a variational characterization of the equations, a Futaki invariant for the system, and a gener…
We present a local classification of conformally equivalent but oppositely oriented 4-dimensional Kaehler metrics which are toric with respect to a common 2-torus action. In the generic case, these "ambitoric" structures have an intriguing local geometry depending on a quadratic polynomial q and arbitrary functions A and B of one variable. We use this description to classify Einstein 4-metrics which are hermitian with respect to both orientations, as well a class of solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations including riemannian analogues of the Plebanski-Demianski metrics. Our classification…
We prove that any compact selfdual Einstein 4-orbifold of positive scalar curvature whose isometry group contains a 2-torus is, up to an orbifold covering, a quaternion Kaehler quotient of (k-1)-dimensional quaternionic projective space by a (k-2)-torus for some $k\geq 2$. We also obtain a topological classification in terms of the intersection form of the 4-orbifold.
Let $P$ be a Delzant polytope. We show that the quantization of the corresponding toric manifold $X_{P}$ in toric Kähler polarizations and in the toric real polarization are related by analytic continuation of Hamiltonian flows evaluated at time $t = \sqrt{-1} s$. We relate the quantization of $X_{P}$ in two different toric Kähler polarizations by taking the time-$\sqrt{-1} s$ Hamiltonian "flow" of strongly convex functions on the moment polytope $P$. By taking $s$ to infinity, we obtain the quantization of $X_{P}$ in the (singular) real toric polarization. Recall that $X_{P}$ has an open dens…
We verify the extension to the zero section of momentum construction of Kaehler-Einstein metrics and Kaehler-Ricci solitons on the total space Y of positive rational powers of the canonical line bundle of toric Fano manifolds with possibly irregular Sasaki-Einstein metrics. More precisely, we show that the extended metric along the zero section has an expression which can be extended to Y, restricts to the associated unit circle bundle as a transversely Kaehler-Einstein (Sasakian eta-Einstein) metric scaled in the Reeb flow direction, and that there is a Riemannian submersion from the scaled S…
We investigate special lcs and twisted Hamiltonian torus actions on strict lcs manifolds and characterize them geometrically in terms of the minimal presentation. We prove a convexity theorem for the corresponding twisted moment map, establishing thus an analog of the symplectic convexity theorem of Atiyah and Guillemin-Sternberg. We also prove similar results for the symplectic moment map (defined on the minimal presentation) whose image is then a convex cone. In the special case of a compact toric Vaisman manifold, we obtain a structure theorem.
On compact Riemannian manifolds with a large isometry group we investigate the invariant spectrum of the ordinary Laplacian. For either a toric Kaehler metric, or a rotationally-symmetric metric on the sphere, we produce upper bounds for all eigenvalues of the invariant spectrum assuming non-negative scalar curvature.
We show that, in toric Kaehler geometry, the sign of the Ricci curvature corresponds exactly to convexity properties of the volume functional. We also discuss analogous relationships in the more general context of quasi-homogeneous manifolds, and existence results for minimal Lagrangian submanifolds.
We derive general expressions for the Kaehler form of the L^2-metric in terms of standard 2-forms on vortex moduli spaces. In the case of abelian vortices in gauged linear sigma-models, this allows us to compute explicitly the Kaehler class of the L^2-metric. As an application we compute the total volume of the moduli space of abelian semi-local vortices. In the strong coupling limit, this then leads to conjectural formulae for the volume of the space of holomorphic maps from a compact Riemann surface to projective space. Finally we show that the localization results of Samols in the abelian H…
In this paper we study the set of balanced metrics (in Donaldson's terminology) on a compact complex manifold M which are homothetic to a given balanced one. This question is related to various properties of the Tian-Yau-Zelditch approximation theorem for Kahler metrics. We prove that this set is finite when $M$ admits a non-positive Kahler-Einstein metric, in the case of non-homogenous toric Kaehler-Einstein manifolds of dimension $\leq 4$ and in the case of Arezzo-Pacard constant scalar curvature metrics.
We classify the periodic Hamiltonian flows on compact four dimensional symplectic manifolds up to isomorphism of Hamiltonian S^1 spaces. Additionally, we show that all these spaces are Kaehler, that every such space is obtained from a simple model by a sequence of symplectic blowups, and that if the fixed points are isolated then the space is a toric variety.
We describe the basic Dolbealut cohomology algebra of the canonical foliation on a class of complex manifolds with a torus symmetry group. This class includes complex moment-angle manifolds, LVM- and LVMB-manifolds and, in most generality, complex manifolds with a maximal holomorphic torus action. We also provide a dga model for the ordinary Dolbeault cohomology algebra. The Hodge decomposition for the basic Dolbeault cohomology is proved by reducing to the transversely Kaehler (equivalently, polytopal) case using a foliated analogue of toric blow-up.
We pursue the symplectic description of toric Kahler manifolds. There exists a general local classification of metrics on toric Kahler manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian two-forms due to Apostolov, Calderbank and Gauduchon(ACG). We derive the symplectic potential for these metrics. Using a method due to Abreu, we relate the symplectic potential to the canonical potential written by Guillemin. This enables us to recover the moment polytope associated with metrics and we thus obtain global information about the metric. We illustrate these general considerations by focusing on six-dimensional Ri…
We consider the self-dual vortex equations on a positive line bundle L --> M over a compact Kaehler manifold of arbitrary dimension. When M is simply connected, the moduli space of vortex solutions is a projective space. When M is an abelian variety, the moduli space is the projectivization of the Fourier-Mukai transform of L. We extend this description of the moduli space to the abelian GLSM, i.e. to vortex equations with a torus gauge group acting linearly on a complex vector space. After establishing the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence appropriate for the general abelian GLSM, we give expl…
