We present a classification of compact Kaehler manifolds admitting a hamiltonian 2-form (which were classified locally in part I of this work). This involves two components of independent interest.
The first is the notion of a rigid hamiltonian torus action. This natural condition, for torus actions on a Kaehler manifold, was introduced locally in part I, but such actions turn out to be remarkably well behaved globally, leading to a fairly explicit classification: up to a blow-up, compact Kaehler manifolds with a rigid hamiltonian torus action are bundles of toric Kaehler manifolds.
The second idea is a special case of toric geometry, which we call orthotoric. We prove that orthotoric Kaehler manifolds are diffeomorphic to complex projective space, but we extend our analysis to orthotoric orbifolds, where the geometry is much richer. We thus obtain new examples of Kaehler--Einstein 4-orbifolds.
Combining these two themes, we prove that compact Kaehler manifolds with hamiltonian 2-forms are covered by blow-downs of projective bundles over Kaehler products, and we describe explicitly how the Kaehler metrics with a hamiltonian 2-form are parameterized. We explain how this provides a context for constructing new examples of extremal Kaehler metrics - in particular a subclass of such metrics which we call weakly Bochner-flat.
We also provide a self-contained treatment of the theory of compact toric Kaehler manifolds, since we need it and find the existing literature incomplete.
We show that the generalized Kähler-Ricci soliton equation on 4-dimensional toric Kähler orbifolds reduces to ODEs assuming there is a Hamiltonian 2-form. This leads to an explicit resolution of this equation on labeled triangles and convex labeled quadrilaterals. In particular, we give the explicit expression of the Kähler-Ricci solitons of weighted projective planes as well as new examples.
We study the Kähler geometry of stage n Bott manifolds, which can be viewed as $n$-dimensional generalizations of Hirzebruch surfaces. We show, using a simple induction argument and the generalized Calabi construction from [ACGT04,ACGT11], that any stage n Bott manifold $M_n$ admits an extremal Kähler metric. We also give necessary conditions for $M_n$ to admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. We obtain more precise results for stage 3 Bott manifolds, including in particular some interesting relations with c-projective geometry and some explicit examples of almost Kähler structures. …
This paper has been withdrawn in order to replace it by two separate submissions: 1. Hamiltonian 2-forms in Kahler geometry III: Extremal metrics and stability, math.DG/0511118; 2. Hamiltonian 2-forms in Kahler geometry IV: Weakly Bochner-flat Kahler manifolds, math.DG/0511119. As the titles indicate, the first paper covers the parts of this withdrawn submission concerning extremal Kahler metrics, while the second one deals the weakly Bochner-flat Kahler metrics. However, the material for the first paper has been substantially revised and extended with several new results. 1. The exposition ha…
Generalized Kahler geometry is the natural analogue of Kahler geometry, in the context of generalized complex geometry. Just as we may require a complex structure to be compatible with a Riemannian metric in a way which gives rise to a symplectic form, we may require a generalized complex structure to be compatible with a metric so that it defines a second generalized complex structure. We explore the fundamental aspects of this geometry, including its equivalence with the bi-Hermitian geometry on the target of a 2-dimensional sigma model with (2,2) supersymmetry, as well as the relation to ho…
We give a mostly self-contained proof of the classification of non-Kahler surfaces based on Buchdahl-Lamari theorem. We also prove that all non-Kahler surfaces which are not of class VII are locally conformally Kahler.
In this paper we continue to study Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Kahler manifolds and algebraic geometry. Our main focus is on the algebro-geometric meaning of Riemannian tangent cones and rescaled limits.
We study Kahler surfaces with harmonic anti-selfdual Weyl tensor. We provide an explicit local description, which we use to obtain the complete classification in the compact case. We give new examples of extremal Kahler metrics, including Kahler-Einstein metrics and conformally Einstein Kahler metrics. We also extend some of our results to almost Kahler 4-manifolds, providing new examples of Ricci-flat almost Kahler metrics which are not Kahler.
In the same way that a contact manifold determines and is determined by a symplectic cone, a Sasaki manifold determines and is determined by a suitable Kahler cone. Kahler-Sasaki geometry is the geometry of these cones. This paper presents a symplectic action-angle coordinates approach to toric Kahler geometry and how it was recently generalized, by Burns-Guillemin-Lerman and Martelli-Sparks-Yau, to toric Kahler-Sasaki geometry. It also describes, as an application, how this approach can be used to relate a recent new family of Sasaki-Einstein metrics constructed by Gauntlett-Martelli-Sparks-W…
We prove an equivariant deformation result for Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds of a Kahler manifold, with respect to deformations of its metric and almost complex structure that are compatible with an isometric Hamiltonian group action. This yields existence of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds in possibly non-Kahler symplectic manifolds whose metric is arbitrarily close to a Kahler metric.
In this paper we construct six-dimensional compact non-Kähler Hamiltonian circle manifolds which satisfy the strong Lefschetz property themselves but nevertheless have a non-Lefschetz symplectic quotient. This provides the first known counter examples to the question whether the strong Lefschetz property descends to the symplectic quotient. We also give examples of Hamiltonian strong Lefschetz circle manifolds which have a non-Lefschetz fixed point submanifold. In addition, we establish a sufficient and necessary condition for a finitely presentable group to be the fundamental group of a stron…
A theorem of Delzant states that any symplectic manifold $(M,\om)$ of dimension $2n$, equipped with an effective Hamiltonian action of the standard $n$-torus $\T^n = \R^{n}/2π\Z^n$, is a smooth projective toric variety completely determined (as a Hamiltonian $\T^n$-space) by the image of the moment map $ϕ:M\to\R^n$, a convex polytope $P=ϕ(M)\subset\R^n$. In this paper we show, using symplectic (action-angle) coordinates on $P\times \T^n$, how all $\om$-compatible toric complex structures on $M$ can be effectively parametrized by smooth functions on $P$. We also discuss some topics suited for a…
We study the construction and classification of weakly Bochner-flat (WBF) metrics (i.e., Kahler metrics with coclosed Bochner tensor) on compact complex manifolds. A Kahler metric is WBF if and only if its `normalized' Ricci form is a hamiltonian 2-form: such 2-forms were introduced and studied in previous papers in the series. It follows that WBF Kahler metrics are extremal. We construct many new examples of WBF metrics on projective bundles and obtain a classification of compact WBF Kahler 6-manifolds, extending work by the first three authors on weakly selfdual Kahler 4-manifolds. The const…
We study CR geometry in arbitrary codimension, and introduce a process, which we call the Levi-Kahler quotient, for constructing Kahler metrics from CR structures with a transverse torus action. Most of the paper is devoted to the study of Levi-Kahler quotients of toric CR manifolds, and in particular, products of odd dimensional spheres. We obtain explicit descriptions and characterizations of such quotients, and find Levi-Kahler quotients of products of 3-spheres which are extremal in a weighted sense introduced by G. Maschler and the first author.
We introduce two new curvatures which refine and elucidate the real bisectional curvature considered by Yang-Zheng \cite{YangZheng}. A unified perspective of the various forms of the Schwarz lemma is given, leading to novel Chern-Lu, Aubin-Yau, and Chen-Cheng-Look Schwarz lemmas in both the Kähler and Hermitian category.
This work is based on the talk delivered at Poisson 2008. We review the recent advances in Generalized Kahler geometry while stressing the use of Poisson and symplectic geometry. The derivation of the generalized Kahler potential is sketched and the relevant global issues are discussed.
Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangians are Lagrangian submanifolds that are critical points of the volume functional under Hamiltonian deformations. They can be considered as a generalization of special Lagrangians or Lagrangian and minimal submanifolds. Joyce, Schoen and the author show that given any compact rigid Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian in $\C^n$, one can always find a family of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangians of the same type in any compact symplectic manifolds with a compatible metric. The advantage of this result is that it holds in very general classes. But the disadvantage is …
We introduce the notion of a hamiltonian 2-form on a Kaehler manifold and obtain a complete local classification. This notion appears to play a pivotal role in several aspects of Kaehler geometry. In particular, on any Kaehler manifold with co-closed Bochner tensor, the (suitably normalized) Ricci form is hamiltonian, and this leads to an explicit description of these Kaehler metrics, which we call weakly Bochner-flat. Hamiltonian 2-forms draw attention to a general construction of Kaehler metrics which interpolates between toric geometry and Calabi-like constructions of metrics on (projective…
The Kähler cone of a compact manifold carries a natural Riemannian metric, given by the intersection product of its cohomology ring. We write down the curvature tensor of this metric by embedding the Kähler cone in the space of hermitian metrics on the underlying manifold. After discussing weak functorality and completeness properties, we give a relative version of both the Kähler cone and the metric.
We show that Tolman's example (of a six dimensional Hamiltonian $T^2$-space with isolated fixed points and no compatible Kähler structure) can be constructed from the flag variety $U(3)/U(1)^3$ by $U(2)$-equivariant symplectic surgery. This implies that Tolman's space has a ``transversal multiplicity-free'' action of $U(2)$ and that Delzant's theorem ``every compact multiplicity-free torus action is Kähler'' \cite{D1} does not generalize to non-abelian actions.
We construct symplectic structures on roughly half of all equal rank biquotients of the form $G//T$, where $G$ is a compact simple Lie group and $T$ a torus, and investigate Hamiltonian Lie group actions on them. For the Eschenburg flag, this action has similar properties as Tolman's and Woodward's examples of Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions. In addition to the previously known Kähler structure on the Eschenburg flag, we find another Kähler structure on a biquotient $\mathrm{SU}(4)//T^3$.
Let (X,L) be a polarized manifold. Assume that the automorphism group is finite. If the height discrepancy of (X,L) is O(d^2) then (X,L) admits a csck metric in the first chern class of L if and only if (X,L) is asymptotically stable.
In the case of a compact real analytic symplectic manifold M we describe an approach to the complexification of Hamiltonian flows [Se, Do1, Th1] and corresponding geodesics on the space of Kahler metrics. In this approach, motivated by recent work on quantization, the complexified Hamiltonian flows act, through the Grobner theory of Lie series, on the sheaf of complex valued real analytic functions, changing the sheaves of holomorphic functions. This defines an action on the space of (equivalent) complex structures on M and also a direct action on M. This description is related to the approach…
We study Riemannian geometry of canonical Kahler-Einstein currents on projective Calabi-Yau varieties and canonical models of general type with crepant singularities. We prove that the metric completion of the regular part of such a canonical current is a compact metric length space homeomorphic to the original projective variety, with well-defined tangent cones. We also prove a special degeneration for Kahler-Einstein manifolds of general type as an approach to establish the compactification of the moduli space of Kahler-Einstein manifolds of general type. A number of applications are given f…
We use hyperbolic geometry to construct simply-connected symplectic or complex manifolds with trivial canonical bundle and with no compatible Kahler structure. We start with the desingularisations of the quadric cone in C^4: the smoothing is a natural S^3-bundle over H^3, its holomorphic geometry is determined by the hyperbolic metric; the small-resolution is a natural S^2-bundle over H^4 with symplectic geometry determined by the metric. Using hyperbolic geometry, we find orbifold quotients with trivial canonical bundle; smooth examples are produced via crepant resolutions. In particular, we …
In this paper, the notion of an almost contact Kählerian structure is introduced. The interior geometry of almost contact Kählerian spaces is investigated. On the zero-curvature distribution of an almost contact metric structure, as on the total space of a vector bundle, an almost contact Kählerian structure is obtained.

Let L be a Lagrangian submanifold of a pseudo- or para-Kähler manifold which is H-minimal, i.e. a critical point of the volume functional restricted to Hamiltonian variations. We derive the second variation of the volume of L with respect to Hamiltonian variations. We apply this formula to several cases. In particular we observe that a minimal Lagrangian submanifold L in a Ricci-flat pseudo- or para-Kähler manifold is H-stable, i.e. its second variation is definite and L therefore a local extremizer of the volume with respect to Hamiltonian variations. We also give a stability criterion for sp…
We introduce and study the notion of a biholomorphic gerbe with connection. The biholomorphic gerbe provides a natural geometrical framework for generalized Kahler geometry in a manner analogous to the way a holomorphic line bundle is related to Kahler geometry. The relation between the gerbe and the generalized Kahler potential is discussed.
We present some fundamental facts about a class of generalized Kähler structures defined by invariant complex structures on compact Lie groups. The main computational tool is the BH-to-GK spectral sequences that relate the bi-Hermitian data to generalized geometry data. The relationship between generalized Hodge decomposition and generalized canonical bundles for generalized Kähler manifolds is also clarified.
We prove that the twisted Kahler-Einstein metrics that arise on the base of certain holomorphic fiber space with Calabi-Yau fibers have conical-type singularities along the discriminant locus. These fiber spaces arise naturally when studying the collapsing of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds, and of the Kahler-Ricci flow on compact Kahler manifolds with semiample canonical bundle and intermediate Kodaira dimension. Our results allow us to understand their collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits when the base is smooth and the discriminant has simple normal crossings.
This is an expository article. Among other topics, we discuss the existence of Kahler-Ricci soliton metrics on toric Fano manifolds, and Kahler-Einstein metrics on deformations of the Mukai-Umemura 3-fold
We study the geometry of PQKT-connections. We find conditions to the existence of a PQKT-connection and prove that if it exists it is unique. We show that PQKT geometry persist in a conformal class of metrics.
It is proved by Kawamata that the canonical bundle of a projective manifold is semi-ample if it is big and nef. We give an analytic proof using the Ricci flow, degeneration of Riemannian manifolds and $L^2$-theory. Combined with our earlier results, we construct unique singular Kahler-Einstein metrics with a global Riemannian structure on canonical models. Our approach can be viewed as the Kodaira embedding theorem on singular metric spaces with canonical Kahler metrics.
Conformally Kähler, Einstein-Maxwell metrics and $f$-extremal metrics are generalization of canonical metrics in Kähler geometry. We introduce uniform K-stability for toric Kähler manifolds, and show that uniform K-stability is necessary condition for the existence of $f$-extremal metrics on toric manifolds. Furthermore, we show that uniform K-stability is equivalent to properness of relative K-energy.

We study Laplace eigenvalues $λ_k$ on Kähler manifolds as functionals on the space of Kähler metrics with cohomologous Kähler forms. We introduce a natural notion of a $λ_k$-extremal Kähler metric and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for it. A particular attention is paid to the $λ_1$-extremal properties of Kähler-Einstein metrics of positive scalar curvature on manifolds with non-trivial holomorphic vector fields.
We prove that a Kahler metric in the anticanonical class which is a critical point of the functional E_k and has nonnegative Ricci curvature, is necessarily Kahler-Einstein. This partially answers a question of X.X.Chen.
The $B$-connection on almost complex manifolds with Norden metric is an analogue of the first canonical connection of Lihnerovich in Hermitian geometry. In the present paper it is considered a $B$-connection in the class of the quasi-Kähler manifold with Norden metric. Some necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the corresponding curvature tensor to be Kählerian. Curvature properties for this connection are obtained. Conditions are given for the considered manifolds to be isotropic-Kähler.
We establish an equivalence between conformally Einstein--Maxwell Kahler 4-manifolds (recently studied in many works) and extremal Kahler 4-manifolds (in the sense of Calabi) with nowhere vanishing scalar curvature. The corresponding pairs of Kahler metrics arise as transversal Kahler structures of Sasaki metrics compatible with the same CR structure and having commuting Sasaki--Reeb vector fields. This correspondence extends to higher dimensions using the notion of a weighted extremal Kahler metric, illuminating and uniting several explicit constructions in Kahler and Sasaki geometry. It also…
We give a physical derivation of generalized Kahler geometry. Starting from a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model, we rederive and explain the results of Gualtieri regarding the equivalence between generalized Kahler geometry and the bi-hermitean geometry of Gates-Hull-Rocek. When cast in the language of supersymmetric sigma models, this relation maps precisely to that between the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms. We also discuss topological twist in this context.
It is known that the scalar curvature arises as the moment map in Kahler geometry. In pursuit of this analogy, we introduce the notion of a moment map in generalized Kahler geometry which gives the definition of a generalized scalar curvature on a generalized Kahler manifold. From the viewpoint of the moment map, we obtain the generalized Ricci form which is a representative of the first Chern class of the anticanonical line bundle. It turns out that infinitesimal deformations of generalized Kahler structures with constant generalized scalar curvature are finite dimensional on a compact manifo…
It is known, that if a 2m-dimensional Kahler manifold satisfies the axiom of holomorphic 2n-spheres (1<n<m) or the axiom of antiholomorphic n-spheres (2<n), it is of constant holomorphic sectional curvature. In this paper the same result is obtained under weaker assumptions.
The geometry of the target space of an N=(2,2) supersymmetry sigma-model carries a generalized Kahler structure. There always exists a real function, the generalized Kahler potential K, that encodes all the relevant local differential geometry data: the metric, the B-field, etc. Generically this data is given by nonlinear functions of the second derivatives of K. We show that, at least locally, the nonlinearity on any generalized Kahler manifold can be explained as arising from a quotient of a space without this nonlinearity.
Given a special Kahler manifold M, we give a new, direct proof of the relationship between the quaternionic structure on its cotangent bundle and the variation of Hodge structures on the complexification of TM.
We construct metrics with the holonomy group SU(2) on the tangent bundles of weighted complex projective lines and give a geometric description of the moduli space of special Kahler metrics on a K3-surface in the neighborhood of the flat orbifold $T^4/Z_3$.
We prove a simple, explicit formula for the mass of any asymptotically locally Euclidean (ALE) Kähler manifold, assuming only the sort of weak fall-off conditions required for the mass to actually be well-defined. For ALE scalar-flat Kähler manifolds, the mass turns out to be a topological invariant, depending only on the underlying smooth manifold, the first Chern class of the complex structure, and the Kähler class of the metric. When the metric is actually AE (asymptotically Euclidean), our formula not only implies a positive mass theorem for Kähler metrics, but also yields a Penrose-type i…
Supergeneralization of $\DC P(N)$ provided by even and odd Kählerian structures from Hamiltonian reduction are construct.Operator $ Δ$ which used in Batalin-- Vilkovisky quantization formalism and mechanics which are bi-Hamiltonian under corresponding even and odd Poisson brackets are considered.
In complex Finsler geometry, an open problem is: does there exist a weakly Kähler Finsler metric which is not Kähler? In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this open problem. More precisely, we construct a family of the weakly Kähler Finsler metrics which are non-Kähler. The examples belong to the unitary invariant complex Randers metrics. Furthermore, a uniformization theorem of the unitary invariant complex Randers metrics with constant holomorphic curvature is proved under the weakly Kähler condition.
We show that, locally, all geometric objects of Generalized Kahler Geometry can be derived from a function K, the "generalized Kahler potential''. The metric g and two-form B are determined as nonlinear functions of second derivatives of K. These nonlinearities are shown to arise via a quotient construction from an auxiliary local product (ALP) space.
We give an intrinsic definition of the special geometry which arises in global N=2 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The base of an algebraic integrable system exhibits this geometry, and with an integrality hypothesis any special Kahler manifold is so related to an integrable system. The cotangent bundle of a special Kahler manifold carries a hyperkahler metric. We also define special geometry in supergravity in terms of the special geometry in global supersymmetry.
