Generalized Kahler geometry is the natural analogue of Kahler geometry, in the context of generalized complex geometry. Just as we may require a complex structure to be compatible with a Riemannian metric in a way which gives rise to a symplectic form, we may require a generalized complex structure to be compatible with a metric so that it defines a second generalized complex structure. We explore the fundamental aspects of this geometry, including its equivalence with the bi-Hermitian geometry on the target of a 2-dimensional sigma model with (2,2) supersymmetry, as well as the relation to holomorphic Dirac geometry and the resulting derived deformation theory. We also explore the analogy between pre-quantum line bundles and gerbes in the context of generalized Kahler geometry.
We give a new characterization of generalized Kähler structures in terms of their corresponding complex Dirac structures. We then give an alternative proof of Hitchin's partial unobstructedness for holomorphic Poisson structures. Our main application is to show that there is a corresponding unobstructedness result for arbitrary generalized Kähler structures. That is, we show that any generalized Kähler structure may be deformed in such a way that one of its underlying holomorphic Poisson structures remains fixed, while the other deforms via Hitchin's deformation. Finally, we indicate a close r…
We solve the problem of determining the fundamental degrees of freedom underlying a generalized Kähler structure of symplectic type. For a usual Kähler structure, it is well-known that the geometry is determined by a complex structure, a Kähler class, and the choice of a positive $(1,1)$-form in this class, which depends locally on only a single real-valued function: the Kähler potential. Such a description for generalized Kähler geometry has been sought since it was discovered in 1984. We show that a generalized Kähler structure of symplectic type is determined by a pair of holomorphic Poisso…
This work is based on the talk delivered at Poisson 2008. We review the recent advances in Generalized Kahler geometry while stressing the use of Poisson and symplectic geometry. The derivation of the generalized Kahler potential is sketched and the relevant global issues are discussed.
From a view point of the moment map, we shall introduce the notion of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections over a generalized Kähler manifold of symplectic type. We show that moduli spaces of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections arise as the Kähler quotients. The deformation complex of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections is an elliptic complex and it turns out that the smooth part of the moduli space is a finite dimensional Kähler manifold. The canonical line bundle over a generalized Kähler manifold of symplectic type has the canonical generalized connection and its curvatu…
We introduce and study the notion of a biholomorphic gerbe with connection. The biholomorphic gerbe provides a natural geometrical framework for generalized Kahler geometry in a manner analogous to the way a holomorphic line bundle is related to Kahler geometry. The relation between the gerbe and the generalized Kahler potential is discussed.
We give a mostly self-contained proof of the classification of non-Kahler surfaces based on Buchdahl-Lamari theorem. We also prove that all non-Kahler surfaces which are not of class VII are locally conformally Kahler.
In this paper we continue to study Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Kahler manifolds and algebraic geometry. Our main focus is on the algebro-geometric meaning of Riemannian tangent cones and rescaled limits.
We study the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow on complex surfaces with nondegenerate Poisson structure, proving long time existence and convergence of the flow to a weak hyperKähler structure.
We introduce natural deformation classes of generalized Kähler structures using the Courant symmetry group. We show that these yield natural extensions of the notions of Kähler class and Kähler cone to generalized Kähler geometry. Lastly we show that the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow preserves this generalized Kähler cone, and the underlying real Poisson tensor.
We study Kahler surfaces with harmonic anti-selfdual Weyl tensor. We provide an explicit local description, which we use to obtain the complete classification in the compact case. We give new examples of extremal Kahler metrics, including Kahler-Einstein metrics and conformally Einstein Kahler metrics. We also extend some of our results to almost Kahler 4-manifolds, providing new examples of Ricci-flat almost Kahler metrics which are not Kahler.
In the same way that a contact manifold determines and is determined by a symplectic cone, a Sasaki manifold determines and is determined by a suitable Kahler cone. Kahler-Sasaki geometry is the geometry of these cones. This paper presents a symplectic action-angle coordinates approach to toric Kahler geometry and how it was recently generalized, by Burns-Guillemin-Lerman and Martelli-Sparks-Yau, to toric Kahler-Sasaki geometry. It also describes, as an application, how this approach can be used to relate a recent new family of Sasaki-Einstein metrics constructed by Gauntlett-Martelli-Sparks-W…
In this paper we obtain a stability theorem of generalized Kahler structures with one pure spinor under small deformations of generalized complex structures. (This is analogous to the stability theorem of Kahler manifolds by Kodaira-Spencer.) We apply the stability theorem to a class of compact Kahler manifolds which admits deformations to generalized complex manifolds and obtain non-trivial generalized Kahler structures on Fano surfaces and toric Kahler manifolds. In particular, we show that holomorphic Poisson structures on a Kahler manifold induce deformations of generalized Kahler structur…
The geometry of the target space of an N=(2,2) supersymmetry sigma-model carries a generalized Kahler structure. There always exists a real function, the generalized Kahler potential K, that encodes all the relevant local differential geometry data: the metric, the B-field, etc. Generically this data is given by nonlinear functions of the second derivatives of K. We show that, at least locally, the nonlinearity on any generalized Kahler manifold can be explained as arising from a quotient of a space without this nonlinearity.
We show that the blow-up of a generalized Kahler 4-manifold in a nondegenerate complex point admits a generalized Kahler metric. As with the blow-up of complex surfaces, this metric may be chosen to coincide with the original outside a tubular neighbourhood of the exceptional divisor. To accomplish this, we develop a blow-up operation for bi-Hermitian manifolds.
We give a physical derivation of generalized Kahler geometry. Starting from a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model, we rederive and explain the results of Gualtieri regarding the equivalence between generalized Kahler geometry and the bi-hermitean geometry of Gates-Hull-Rocek. When cast in the language of supersymmetric sigma models, this relation maps precisely to that between the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms. We also discuss topological twist in this context.
In the previous paper \cite{Goto_2017}, the notion of an Einstein-Hermitian metric of a generalized holomorphic vector bundle over a generalized Kahler manifold of symplectic type was introduced from the moment map framework. In this paper we establish a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence, that is, the equivalence of the existence of an Einstein-Hermitian metric and $ψ$-polystability of a generalized holomorphic vector bundle over a compact generalized Kahler manifold of symplectic type. Poisson modules provide intriguing generalized holomorphic vector bundles and we obtain $ψ$-stable Poisson mo…
We show that, locally, all geometric objects of Generalized Kahler Geometry can be derived from a function K, the "generalized Kahler potential''. The metric g and two-form B are determined as nonlinear functions of second derivatives of K. These nonlinearities are shown to arise via a quotient construction from an auxiliary local product (ALP) space.
We study CR geometry in arbitrary codimension, and introduce a process, which we call the Levi-Kahler quotient, for constructing Kahler metrics from CR structures with a transverse torus action. Most of the paper is devoted to the study of Levi-Kahler quotients of toric CR manifolds, and in particular, products of odd dimensional spheres. We obtain explicit descriptions and characterizations of such quotients, and find Levi-Kahler quotients of products of 3-spheres which are extremal in a weighted sense introduced by G. Maschler and the first author.
We solve the long standing problem of finding an off-shell supersymmetric formulation for a general N = (2, 2) nonlinear two dimensional sigma model. Geometrically the problem is equivalent to proving the existence of special coordinates; these correspond to particular superfields that allow for a superspace description. We construct and explain the geometric significance of the generalized Kahler potential for any generalized Kahler manifold; this potential is the superspace Lagrangian.
Let X be a compact Kahler manifold with a non-trivial holomorphic Poisson structure. Then there exist deformations of non-trivial generalized Kahler structures with one pure spinor on X. We prove that every Poisson submanifold of X is a generalized Kahler submanifold with respect to the deformed generalized Kahler structures and provide non-trivial examples of generalized Kahler submanifolds arising as holomorphic Poisson submanifolds. We also obtain unobstructed deformations of bi-Hermitian structures constructed from Poisson structures.
It is known that the scalar curvature arises as the moment map in Kahler geometry. In pursuit of this analogy, we introduce the notion of a moment map in generalized Kahler geometry which gives the definition of a generalized scalar curvature on a generalized Kahler manifold. From the viewpoint of the moment map, we obtain the generalized Ricci form which is a representative of the first Chern class of the anticanonical line bundle. It turns out that infinitesimal deformations of generalized Kahler structures with constant generalized scalar curvature are finite dimensional on a compact manifo…
We present some fundamental facts about a class of generalized Kähler structures defined by invariant complex structures on compact Lie groups. The main computational tool is the BH-to-GK spectral sequences that relate the bi-Hermitian data to generalized geometry data. The relationship between generalized Hodge decomposition and generalized canonical bundles for generalized Kähler manifolds is also clarified.
We consider the generalized Kahler structures (g,J_+,J_-) that arise on a hyperkahler manifold (M,g,I,J,K) when we choose J_+ and J_- from the twistor space of M. We find a relation between semichiral and arctic superfields which can be used to determine the generalized Kahler potential for hyperkahler manifolds whose description in projective superspace is fully understood. We use this relation to determine an S^2-family of generalized Kahler potentials for Euclidean space and for the Eguchi-Hanson geometry. Cotangent bundles of Hermitian symmetric spaces constitute a class of hyperkahler man…
We show that our earlier work in \cite{LT05} extends to the twisted case, that is, we defined a notion of moment map and reduction in both twisted generalized complex geometry and twisted generalized Kähler geometry.
We study hyperkahler cones and their corresponding quaternion-Kahler spaces. We present a classification of 4(n-1)-dimensional quaternion-Kahler spaces with n abelian quaternionic isometries, based on dualizing superconformal tensor multiplets. These manifolds characterize the geometry of the hypermultiplet sector of perturbative moduli spaces of type-II strings compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold. As an example of our construction, we study the universal hypermultiplet in detail, and give three inequivalent tensor multiplet descriptions. We also comment on the construction of quaternion-Kah…
In Kähler geometry, Fujiki--Donaldson show that the scalar curvature arises as the moment map for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. In generalized Kähler geometry, one does not have suitable notions of Levi-Civita connection and curvature, however there still exists a precise framework for a moment map and the scalar curvature is defined as the moment map. Then a fundamental question is to understand the existence or non-existence of generalized Kähler structures with constant scalar curvature. In the paper, we study the Lie algebra of automorphisms of a generalized complex manifold. We assume that…
We define the operations of conformal change and elementary deformation in the setting of generalized complex geometry. Then we apply Swann's twist construction to generalized (almost) complex and Hermitian structures obtained by these operations and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the Courant integrability of the resulting twisted structures. In particular, we associate to any appropriate generalized Kahler manifold (M, G, \mathcal J ) with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field a new generalized Kahler manifold, depending on the choice of a pair of non-vanishing functions and c…
We prove that any invariant strong Kahler structure with torsion (SKT structure) on a flag manifold M=G/K of a semisimple compact Lie group G is Kahler. As an application we describe invariant generalized Kahler structures on M.
We define a generalized almost para-Hermitian structure to be a commuting pair $(\mathcal{F},\mathcal{J})$ of a generalized almost para-complex structure and a generalized almost complex structure with an adequate non-degeneracy condition. If the two structures are integrable the pair is called a generalized para-Kähler structure. This class of structures contains both the classical para-Kähler structure and the classical Kähler structure. We show that a generalized almost para-Hermitian structure is equivalent to a triple $(γ,ψ,F)$, where $γ$ is a (pseudo) Riemannian metric, $ψ$ is a $2$-form…
We study Riemannian geometry of canonical Kahler-Einstein currents on projective Calabi-Yau varieties and canonical models of general type with crepant singularities. We prove that the metric completion of the regular part of such a canonical current is a compact metric length space homeomorphic to the original projective variety, with well-defined tangent cones. We also prove a special degeneration for Kahler-Einstein manifolds of general type as an approach to establish the compactification of the moduli space of Kahler-Einstein manifolds of general type. A number of applications are given f…
In this paper, the notion of an almost contact Kählerian structure is introduced. The interior geometry of almost contact Kählerian spaces is investigated. On the zero-curvature distribution of an almost contact metric structure, as on the total space of a vector bundle, an almost contact Kählerian structure is obtained.
We give an intrinsic definition of the special geometry which arises in global N=2 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The base of an algebraic integrable system exhibits this geometry, and with an integrality hypothesis any special Kahler manifold is so related to an integrable system. The cotangent bundle of a special Kahler manifold carries a hyperkahler metric. We also define special geometry in supergravity in terms of the special geometry in global supersymmetry.
We define the notions of B_n-generalized pseudo-Hermitian and B_n-generalized pseudo-Kahler structures on an odd exact Courant algebroid E. When E is in the standard form (or of type B_n) we express these notions in terms of classical tensor fields on the base of E. This is analogous to the bi-Hermitian viewpoint on generalized Kahler structures on exact Courant algebroids. We describe left-invariant B_n-generalized pseudo-Kahler structures on Courant algebroids of type B_n over Lie groups of dimension two, three and four.
Let (X,L) be a polarized manifold. Assume that the automorphism group is finite. If the height discrepancy of (X,L) is O(d^2) then (X,L) admits a csck metric in the first chern class of L if and only if (X,L) is asymptotically stable.
In the neighborhood of a regular point, generalized Kahler geometry admits a description in terms of a single real function, the generalized Kahler potential. We study the local conditions for a generalized Kahler manifold to be a generalized Calabi-Yau manifold and we derive a non-linear PDE that the generalized Kahler potential has to satisfy for this to be true. This non-linear PDE can be understood as a generalization of the complex Monge-Ampere equation and its solutions give supergravity solutions with metric, dilaton and H-field.
This paper has been withdrawn in order to replace it by two separate submissions: 1. Hamiltonian 2-forms in Kahler geometry III: Extremal metrics and stability, math.DG/0511118; 2. Hamiltonian 2-forms in Kahler geometry IV: Weakly Bochner-flat Kahler manifolds, math.DG/0511119. As the titles indicate, the first paper covers the parts of this withdrawn submission concerning extremal Kahler metrics, while the second one deals the weakly Bochner-flat Kahler metrics. However, the material for the first paper has been substantially revised and extended with several new results. 1. The exposition ha…

It is known that holomorphic Poisson structures are closely related to theories of generalized Kähler geometry and bi-Hermitian structures. In this article, we introduce quantization of holomorphic Poisson structures which are closely related to generalized Kähler structures /bi-Hermitian structures. By resulting noncommutative product $\star$ obtained via quantization, we also demonstrate computations with respect to concrete examples.
We continue the study of blow-ups in generalized complex geometry with the blow-up theory for generalized Kähler manifolds. The natural candidates for submanifolds to be blown-up are those which are generalized Poisson for one of the two generalized complex structures and can be blown up in a generalized complex manner. We show that the bi-Hermitian structure underlying the generalized Kähler pair lifts to a degenerate bi-Hermitian structure on this blow-up. Then, using a deformation procedure based on potentials in Kähler geometry, we identify two concrete situations in which one can deform t…
Using toric geometry we give an explicit construction of the compact steady solitons for pluriclosed flow first constructed in arXiv:1802.00170. This construction also reveals that these solitons are generalized Kähler in two distinct ways, with vanishing and nonvanishing Poisson structure. This gives the first examples of generalized Kähler structures with nonvanishing Poisson structure on non-standard Hopf surfaces, completing the existence question for such structures. Moreover this gives a complete answer to the existence question for generalized Kähler-Ricci solitons on compact complex su…
In this note, we consider submanifolds of a generalized Kähler manifold that are CR-submanifolds for the two associated Hermitian structures. Then, we establish the conditions for the induced, generalized F structure to be a CRFK structure. The results extend similar conditions which we obtained for hypersurfaces in an earlier paper.
Under broad hypotheses we derive a scalar reduction of the generalized Kähler-Ricci soliton system. We realize solutions as critical points of a functional analogous to the classical Aubin energy defined on the orbit of a natural Hamiltonian action of diffeomorphisms, thought of as a generalized Kähler class. This functional is convex on a large set of paths in this space, and using this we show rigidity of solitons in their generalized Kähler class. As an application we prove uniqueness of the generalized Kähler-Ricci solitons on Hopf surfaces constructed in arXiv:1907.03819, finishing the cl…
In this paper we define the notion of a generalized coKähler structure and prove that the product $M_{1}\times M_{2}$ of generalized contact metric manifolds $(M_i, Φ_i,E_{\pm,i}, G_i)$, $ i=1, 2$, where $M_{1}\times M_{2}$ is endowed with the product generalized complex structure induced from $Φ_1$ and $Φ_2$, is generalized Kähler if and only if $(M_i, Φ_i, E_{\pm,i}, G_i) ,\ \ i=1,2$ are generalized coKähler structures. We also prove that products of generalized coKähler and generalized Kähler manifolds admit a generalized coKähler structure. We use these product constructions to give nontri…
This is an expository article. Among other topics, we discuss the existence of Kahler-Ricci soliton metrics on toric Fano manifolds, and Kahler-Einstein metrics on deformations of the Mukai-Umemura 3-fold
We give a complete classification of left invariant generalized complex structures of type 1 on four dimensional simply connected Lie groups and we compute for each class its invariant generalized Dolbeault cohomology, its invariant generalized Bott-Chern cohomology and its invariant generalized Aeppli cohomology. We classify also left invariant generalized Kähler structures on four dimensional simply connected Lie groups.
We study the geometry of PQKT-connections. We find conditions to the existence of a PQKT-connection and prove that if it exists it is unique. We show that PQKT geometry persist in a conformal class of metrics.
We use hyperbolic geometry to construct simply-connected symplectic or complex manifolds with trivial canonical bundle and with no compatible Kahler structure. We start with the desingularisations of the quadric cone in C^4: the smoothing is a natural S^3-bundle over H^3, its holomorphic geometry is determined by the hyperbolic metric; the small-resolution is a natural S^2-bundle over H^4 with symplectic geometry determined by the metric. Using hyperbolic geometry, we find orbifold quotients with trivial canonical bundle; smooth examples are produced via crepant resolutions. In particular, we …
We prove that the twisted Kahler-Einstein metrics that arise on the base of certain holomorphic fiber space with Calabi-Yau fibers have conical-type singularities along the discriminant locus. These fiber spaces arise naturally when studying the collapsing of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds, and of the Kahler-Ricci flow on compact Kahler manifolds with semiample canonical bundle and intermediate Kodaira dimension. Our results allow us to understand their collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits when the base is smooth and the discriminant has simple normal crossings.
It is proved by Kawamata that the canonical bundle of a projective manifold is semi-ample if it is big and nef. We give an analytic proof using the Ricci flow, degeneration of Riemannian manifolds and $L^2$-theory. Combined with our earlier results, we construct unique singular Kahler-Einstein metrics with a global Riemannian structure on canonical models. Our approach can be viewed as the Kodaira embedding theorem on singular metric spaces with canonical Kahler metrics.

We establish the conditions for the induced generalized metric F structure of an oriented hypersurface of a generalized Kähler manifold to be a generalized CRFK structure. Then, we discuss a notion of generalized almost contact structure on a manifold $M$ that is suggested by the induced structure of a hypersurface. Such a structure has an associated generalized almost complex structure on $M\times\mathds{R}$. If the latter is integrable, the former is normal and we give the corresponding characterization. If the structure on $M\times\mathds{R}$ is generalized Kähler, the structure on $M$ is s…
We prove that a Kahler metric in the anticanonical class which is a critical point of the functional E_k and has nonnegative Ricci curvature, is necessarily Kahler-Einstein. This partially answers a question of X.X.Chen.
Let $(X, J)$ be a compact Kahler manifold with a non-zero holomorphic Poisson structure $β$. If the obstruction space for deformations of generalized complex structures on $(X, J)$ vanishes, we obtain a family of deformations of non-trivial bihermitian structures $(J, J^-_t, h_t)$ on $X$ by using $β$. In addition, if the class $[β\cdot ω]$ does not vanish for a Kähler form $ω$, then the complex structure $J_t^-$ is not equivalent to $J$ for small $t\neq 0$ under diffeomorphisms. Our method is based on the construction of generalized complex and Kahler structures developed in \cite{Go1} and \ci…
We establish an equivalence between conformally Einstein--Maxwell Kahler 4-manifolds (recently studied in many works) and extremal Kahler 4-manifolds (in the sense of Calabi) with nowhere vanishing scalar curvature. The corresponding pairs of Kahler metrics arise as transversal Kahler structures of Sasaki metrics compatible with the same CR structure and having commuting Sasaki--Reeb vector fields. This correspondence extends to higher dimensions using the notion of a weighted extremal Kahler metric, illuminating and uniting several explicit constructions in Kahler and Sasaki geometry. It also…
