We develop a theory of reduction for generalized Kahler and hyper-Kahler structures which uses the generalized Riemannian metric in an essential way, and which is not described with reference solely to a single generalized complex structure. We show that our construction specializes to the usual theory of Kahler and hyper-Kahler reduction, and it gives a way to view usual hyper-Kahler quotients in terms of generalized Kahler reduction.
We construct symplectic and Kähler ray reduced spaces and discuss their relation with the Marsden-Weinstein (point) reduction. This Kähler reduction is well defined even when the momentum value is not totally isotropic. The compatibility of the ray reduction with the cone construction and the Boothby-Wang fibration is presented. Using the compatibility with the cone construction we provide the exact description of ray quotients of cotangent bundles. Some applications of the ray reduction to the study of conformal Hamiltonian systems are described. We also give necessary and sufficient conditio…
Let N_0 = C^2/H be an isolated quotient singularity with H in U (2) a finite subgroup. We show that for any Q-Gorenstein smoothings of N_0 a nearby fiber admits ALE Ricci-flat Kahler metrics in any Kahler class. Moreover, we generalize Kronheimer's results on hyperkahler 4-manifolds, by giving an explicit classification of the ALE Ricci-flat Kahler surfaces. We construct ALF Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on the above non-simply connected manifolds. These provide new examples of ALF Ricci-flat Kahler 4-manifolds, with cubic volume growth and cyclic fundamental group at infinity.
Let X be a Kahler manifold that is presented as a Kahler quotient of C^n by the linear action of a compact group G. We define the hyperkahler analogue M of X as a hyperkahler quotient of the cotangent bundle T^*C^n by the induced G-action. Special instances of this construction include hypertoric varieties and quiver varieties. Our aim is to provide a unified treatment of these two previously studied examples, with specific attention to the geometry and topology of the circle action on M that descends from the scalar action on the fibers of the cotangent bundle. We provide a detailed study of …
We study non-linear sigma models whose target spaces are the Higgs phases of supersymmetric SO and USp gauge theories by using the Kahler and hyper-Kahler quotient constructions. We obtain the explicit Kahler potentials and develop an expansion formula to make use of the obtained potentials from which we also calculate the curvatures of the manifolds. The 1/2 BPS lumps in the U(1) x SO and U(1) x USp Kahler quotients and their effective descriptions are also studied. In this connection, a general relation between moduli spaces of vortices and lumps is discussed. We find a new singular limit of…
In this paper, we consider the $V$-soliton equation which is a degenerate fully nonlinear equation introduced by La Nave and Tian in their work on Kähler-Ricci flow on symplectic quotients. One can apply the interpretation to study finite time singularities of the Kähler-Ricci flow. As in the case of Kähler-Einstein metrics, we can also reduce the $V$-soliton equation to a scalar equation on Kähler potentials, which is of Monge-Ampère type. We formulate some preliminary estimates for such a scalar equation on a compact Kähler manifold $M$.
In this paper we apply the hyper-Kähler quotient construction to Lie groups with a left invariant hyper-Kähler structure under the action of a closed abelian subgroup by left multiplication. This is motivated by the fact that some known hyper-Kähler metrics can be recovered in this way by considering different Lie group structures on $\H^p \times \H^q$ ($\H$: the quaternions). We obtain new complete hyper-Kähler metrics on Euclidean spaces and give their local expressions.
We prove that, given a certain isometric action of a two-dimensional Abelian group A on a quaternionic Kähler manifold M which preserves a submanifold N\subset M, the quotient M'=N/A has a natural Kähler structure. We verify that the assumptions on the group action and on the submanifold N\subset M are satisfied for a large class of examples obtained from the supergravity c-map. In particular, we find that all quaternionic Kähler manifolds M in the image of the c-map admit an integrable complex structure compatible with the quaternionic structure, such that N\subset M is a complex submanifold.…
We show that the explicit ALE Ricci-flat Kahler metrics constructed by Eguchi-Hanson, Gibbons-Hawking, Hitchin and Kronheimer, and their free quotients are metrics obtained by Tian-Yau techniques. The proof relies on a construction of good compactifications of Q-Gorenstein deformations of quotient surface singularities as log del Pezzo surfaces with only cyclic quotient singularities at infinity.
We study CR geometry in arbitrary codimension, and introduce a process, which we call the Levi-Kahler quotient, for constructing Kahler metrics from CR structures with a transverse torus action. Most of the paper is devoted to the study of Levi-Kahler quotients of toric CR manifolds, and in particular, products of odd dimensional spheres. We obtain explicit descriptions and characterizations of such quotients, and find Levi-Kahler quotients of products of 3-spheres which are extremal in a weighted sense introduced by G. Maschler and the first author.
In this paper, we first show an interpretation of the Kähler-Ricci flow on a manifold $X$ as an exact elliptic equation of Einstein type on a manifold $M$ of which $X$ is one of the (Kähler) symplectic reductions via a (non-trivial) torus action. There are plenty of such manifolds (e.g. any line bundle on $X$ will do). Such an equation is called $V$-soliton equation, which can be regarded as a generalization of Kähler-Einstein equations or Kähler-Ricci solitons. As in the case of Kähler-Einstein metrics, we can also reduce the $V$-soliton equation to a scalar equation on Kähler potentials, whi…
We prove that if G is a compact connected Lie group and X is a compact connected hyper-Kahler manifold, then the L^2 metric on (the smooth locus of) the moduli space of flat G-bundles on X is a hyper-Kahler metric.
We use the quaternion Kahler reduction technique to study old and new self-dual Einstein metrics of negative scalar curvature with at least a two-dimensional isometry group, and relate the quotient construction to the hyperbolic eigenfunction Ansatz. We focus in particular on the (semi-)quaternion Kahler quotients of (semi-)quaternion Kahler hyperboloids, analysing the completeness and topology, and relating them to the self-dual Einstein Hermitian metrics of Apostolov-Gauduchon and Bryant.
In this paper we study the geometry of the total space $Y$ of a cotangent bundle to a Kähler manifold $N$ where $N$ is obtained as a Kähler reduction from $\mathbb C^n$. Using the hyperkähler reduction we construct a hyperkähler metric on $Y$ and prove that it coincides with the canonical Feix-Kaledin metric. This metric is in general non-complete. We show that the metric completion $\tilde Y$ of the space $Y$ is equipped with a structure of a stratified hyperkähler space. We give a necessary condition for the Feix-Kaledin metric to be complete using an observation of R.Bielawski. Pick a compl…
We survey recent developments which led to the proof of the Benson-Gordon conjecture on Kähler quotients of solvable Lie groups. In addition we prove that the Albanese morphism of a Kähler manifold which is a homotopy torus is a biholomorphic map. The latter result then implies the classification of compact aspherical Kähler manifolds with (virtually) solvable fundamental group up to biholomorphic equivalence. They are all biholomorphic to complex manifolds which are obtained as a quotient of $\bbC^n$ by a discrete group of complex isometries.
From a view point of the moment map, we shall introduce the notion of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections over a generalized Kähler manifold of symplectic type. We show that moduli spaces of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections arise as the Kähler quotients. The deformation complex of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections is an elliptic complex and it turns out that the smooth part of the moduli space is a finite dimensional Kähler manifold. The canonical line bundle over a generalized Kähler manifold of symplectic type has the canonical generalized connection and its curvatu…
An index theorem for the anti-self-dual deformation complex on anti-self-dual orbifolds with cyclic quotient singularities is proved. We present two applications of this theorem. The first is to compute the dimension of the deformation space of the Calderbank-Singer scalar-flat Kahler toric ALE spaces. A corollary of this is that, except for the Eguchi-Hanson metric, all of these spaces admit non-toric anti-self-dual deformations, thus yielding many new examples of anti-self-dual ALE spaces. For our second application, we compute the dimension of the deformation space of the canonical Bochner-…
Let $g$ be a hyper-Hermitian metric on a simply connected hypercomplex four-manifold $M$. We show that when the isometry group $I(M,g)$ contains a subgroup acting simply transitively on $M$ by hypercomplex isometries then the metric $g$ is conformal to a hyper-Kähler metric. We describe explicitely the corresponding hyper-Kähler metrics and it follows that, in four dimensions, these are the only hyper-Kähler metrics containing a homogeneous metric in its conformal class.
Let $K$ be a compact group. For a symplectic quotient $M_λ$ of a compact Hamiltonian Kähler $K$-manifold, we show that the induced complex structure on $M_λ$ is locally invariant when the parameter $λ$ varies in $\mathrm{Lie}(K)^*$. To prove such a result, we take two different approaches: (i) by using the complex geometry properties of the symplectic implosion construction; (ii) by investigating the variation of GIT quotients.
We describe an action of $U(1)\times Sp(1)$ on $HP^7$ that allows to obtain a $Z_2$-quotient of CAYLEY (the Grassmannian of oriented 4-planes in $R^8$ closed under the three-fold cross product) by quaternionic Kähler reduction.
In this paper we show that the convergence of complete Kahler-Einstein hypersurfaces in complex torus in the sense of Cheeger-Gromov will canonically degenerate the underlying manifolds into "pair of pants" decomposition. We also construct minimal Lagrangian tori that represent the vanishing cycles of the degeneration.
In this paper we describe QCH Kähler surfaces $(M,g,J)$ of generalized orthotoric type. We introduce a distinguished orthonormal frame on $(M,g)$ and give the structure equations for $(M,g,J)$. In the case when $I$ is conformally Kähler and $(M,g,J)$ is not hyperkähler we integrate these structure equations and rediscover the orthotoric Kähler surfaces. We also investigate the hyperkäler case. We prove in a simple way that if $(M,g,J)$ is a hyperkähler surface with a degenerate Weyl tensor $W^-$ (i.e. QCH hyperkähler surface) then among all hyperkäler structures on $(M,g)$ there exists a Kähle…
Let $\,Ξ\,$ be the crown domain associated with a non-compact irreducible hermitian symmetric space $\,G/K$. We give an explicit description of the unique $\,G$-invariant adapted hyper-Kähler structure on $\,Ξ$,$\ $i.$\,$e.$\ $compatible with the adapted complex structure $\,J_{ad}\,$ and with the $\,G$-invariant Kähler structure of $\,G/K$. We also compute invariant potentials of the involved Kähler metrics and the associated moment maps.
We show that, locally, all geometric objects of Generalized Kahler Geometry can be derived from a function K, the "generalized Kahler potential''. The metric g and two-form B are determined as nonlinear functions of second derivatives of K. These nonlinearities are shown to arise via a quotient construction from an auxiliary local product (ALP) space.
We establish the conditions for the induced generalized metric F structure of an oriented hypersurface of a generalized Kähler manifold to be a generalized CRFK structure. Then, we discuss a notion of generalized almost contact structure on a manifold $M$ that is suggested by the induced structure of a hypersurface. Such a structure has an associated generalized almost complex structure on $M\times\mathds{R}$. If the latter is integrable, the former is normal and we give the corresponding characterization. If the structure on $M\times\mathds{R}$ is generalized Kähler, the structure on $M$ is s…
The geometry of the target space of an N=(2,2) supersymmetry sigma-model carries a generalized Kahler structure. There always exists a real function, the generalized Kahler potential K, that encodes all the relevant local differential geometry data: the metric, the B-field, etc. Generically this data is given by nonlinear functions of the second derivatives of K. We show that, at least locally, the nonlinearity on any generalized Kahler manifold can be explained as arising from a quotient of a space without this nonlinearity.
The twistor space of the moduli space of solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations can be identified with the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of $λ$-connections. We use real projective structures on Riemann surfaces to prove the existence of new components of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space. Applying the twistorial construction we show the existence of new hyper-Kähler manifolds associated to any compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq2$. These hyper-Kähler manifolds can be considered as moduli spaces of (certain) singular solutions of the self-duality equations.
The group SL(2) acts on the space of cohomology groups of any hyper-Kahler manifold X. The χ_{y} genus of a hyper-Kahler X is shown to have a geometric interpretation as the super trace of an element of SL(2). As a by product one learns that the generalized Casson invariant for a mapping torus is essentially the χ_{y} genus.
We consider the generalized Kahler structures (g,J_+,J_-) that arise on a hyperkahler manifold (M,g,I,J,K) when we choose J_+ and J_- from the twistor space of M. We find a relation between semichiral and arctic superfields which can be used to determine the generalized Kahler potential for hyperkahler manifolds whose description in projective superspace is fully understood. We use this relation to determine an S^2-family of generalized Kahler potentials for Euclidean space and for the Eguchi-Hanson geometry. Cotangent bundles of Hermitian symmetric spaces constitute a class of hyperkahler man…
We study complex Lagrangian submanifolds of a compact hyper-Kähler manifold and prove two results: (a) that an involution of a hyper-Kähler manifold which is antiholomorphic with respect to one complex structure and which acts non-trivially on the corresponding symplectic form always has a fixed point locus which is complex Lagrangian with respect to one of the other complex structures, and (b) there exist Lagrangian submanifolds which are complex with respect to one complex structure and are not the fixed point locus of any involution which is anti-holomorphic with respect to one of the other…
