The group SL(2) acts on the space of cohomology groups of any hyper-Kahler manifold X. The χ_{y} genus of a hyper-Kahler X is shown to have a geometric interpretation as the super trace of an element of SL(2). As a by product one learns that the generalized Casson invariant for a mapping torus is essentially the χ_{y} genus.
In this paper we prove that finite index subgroups of genus 3 mapping class and Torelli groups that contain the group generated by Dehn twists on bounding simple closed curves are not Kahler. These results are deduced from explicit presentations of the unipotent (aka, Malcev) completion of genus 3 Torelli groups and of the relative completions of genus 3 mapping class groups. The main results follow from the fact that these presentations are not quadratic. To complete the picture, we compute presentations of completed Torelli and mapping class in genera > 3; they are quadratic. We also show th…
We study in this article three birational invariants of projective hyper-Kähler manifolds: the degree of irrationality, the fibering gonality and the fibering genus. We first improve the lower bound in a recent result of Voisin saying that the fibering genus of a Mumford--Tate very general projective hyper-Kähler manifold is bounded from below by a constant depending on its dimension and the second Betti number. We also study the relations between these birational invariants for projective K3 surfaces of Picard number 1 and study the asymptotic behaviors of their degree of irrationality and fi…
We show that any Kahler extension of a finitely generated abelian group by a surface group of genus g at least 2 is virtually a product. Conversely, we prove that any homomorphism of an even rank, finitely generated abelian group into the genus g mapping class group with finite image gives rise to a Kahler extension. The main tools come from surface topology and known restrictions on Kahler groups.
We prove a structure theorem for the Gromov-Witten invariants of compact Kahler surfaces with geometric genus $p_g>0$. Under the technical assumption that there is a canonical divisor that is a disjoint union of smooth components, the theorem shows that the GW invariants are universal functions determined by the genus of this canonical divisor components and the holomorphic Euler characteristic of the surface. We compute special cases of these universal functions.
We study the Albanese image of a compact Kähler manifold whose geometric genus is one. We prove that if the Albanese map is not surjective, then the manifold maps surjectively onto an ample divisor in some abelian variety, and in many cases the ample divisor is a theta divisor. With a further natural assumption on the topology of the manifold, we prove that the manifold is an algebraic fiber space over a genus two curve. Finally we apply these results to study the geometry of a compact Kähler manifold which has the same Hodge numbers as those of an abelian variety of the same dimension.
We identify the perverse filtration of a Lagrangian fibration with the monodromy weight filtration of a maximally unipotent degeneration of compact hyper-Kähler manifolds.
We prove that the space of convex real projective structures on a surface of genus $g\ge 2$ admits a mapping class group invariant Kähler metric where Teichmüller space with Weil-Petersson metric is a totally geodesic complex submanifold.
For any Lagrangean Kähler submanifold $M \subset T^*{\Bbb C}^n$, there exists a canonical hyper Kähler metric on $T^*M$. A Kähler potential for this metric is given by the generalized Calabi Ansatz of the theoretical physicists Cecotti, Ferrara and Girardello. This correspondence provides a method for the construction of (pseudo) hyper Kähler manifolds with large automorphism group. Using it, a class of pseudo hyper Kähler manifolds of complex signature $(2,2n)$ is constructed. For any hyper Kähler manifold $N$ in this class a group of automorphisms with a codimension one orbit on $N$ is speci…
This note presents basic restrictions on the topology "general" Lagrangian surfaces of hyper-Kähler $4$-folds and a remark on the interaction of a Lagrangian subvariety with a Lagrangian fibration of the associated hyper-Kähler variety.
The twistor space of the moduli space of solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations can be identified with the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of $λ$-connections. We use real projective structures on Riemann surfaces to prove the existence of new components of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space. Applying the twistorial construction we show the existence of new hyper-Kähler manifolds associated to any compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq2$. These hyper-Kähler manifolds can be considered as moduli spaces of (certain) singular solutions of the self-duality equations.
Generalizing a classical theorem of Carlson and Toledo, we prove that any Zariski dense isometric action of a Kähler group on the real hyperbolic space of dimension at least 3 factors through a homomorphism onto a cocompact discrete subgroup of PSL(2,R). We also study actions of Kähler groups on infinite dimensional real hyperbolic spaces, describe some exotic actions of PSL(2,R) on these spaces, and give an application to the study of the Cremona group.
We study infinitesimal deformations of autodual and hyper-holomorphic connections on complex vector bundles on hyper-Kähler manifolds of arbitrary dimension. In particular, we describe the DG Lie algebra controlling this deformation problem. Moreover, we prove associative formality for derived endomorphisms of a holomorphic vector bundle admitting a projectively hyper-holomorphic connection.
We complete the classification of order $5$ nonsymplectic automorphisms on hyper-Kähler fourfolds deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface. We then compute the topological Lefschetz number of natural automorphisms of generalized Kummer fourfolds and we describe the geometry of their fix loci.
We introduce and study the notion of atomic sheaves and complexes on higher-dimensional hyper-Kähler manifolds and show that they share many of the intriguing properties of simple sheaves on K3 surfaces. For example, we prove formality of the dg algebra of derived endomorphisms for stable atomic bundles. We further demonstrate the characteristics of atomic objects by studying atomic Lagrangian submanifolds. In the appendix, we prove non-existence results for spherical objects on hyper-Kähler manifolds.
For general compact Kähler manifolds it is shown that both Toeplitz quantization and geometric quantization lead to a well-defined (by operator norm estimates) classical limit. This generalizes earlier results of the authors and Klimek and Lesniewski obtained for the torus and higher genus Riemann surfaces, respectively. We thereby arrive at an approximation of the Poisson algebra by a sequence of finite-dimensional matrix algebras $gl(N)$, $N\to\infty$.
In previous work, we noted that the known cases of hyper-Kähler manifolds satisfy a natural condition on the LLV decomposition of the cohomology; informally, the Verbitsky component is the dominant representation in the LLV decomposition. Assuming this condition holds for all hyper-Kähler manifolds, we obtain an upper bound for the second Betti number in terms of the dimension.
Given a Lagrangian fibration $π: X \to \mathbb{P}^n$ of a compact hyper-Kähler manifold of $\text{K3}^{[n]}$, $\text{Kum}_n$, $\text{OG10}$ or $\text{OG6}$-type, we construct a natural compactification of its dual torus fibration. Specifically, this compactification is given by a quotient of $X$ by certain automorphisms acting trivially on the second cohomology and respecting the Lagrangian fibration. It is a compact hyper-Kähler orbifold with identical period mapping behavior as $X$.
Using the Laza-Saccà-Voisin construction, we give a simple proof for the fact that the Euler characteristic of a hyper-Kähler manifold of OG10 type is 176,904, a result previously established by Mozgovoy.
We introduce a linearised form of the square root of the Todd class inside the Verbitsky component of a hyper-Kähler manifold using the extended Mukai lattice. This enables us to define a Mukai vector for certain objects in the derived category taking values inside the extended Mukai lattice which is functorial for derived equivalences. As applications, we obtain a structure theorem for derived equivalences between hyper-Kähler manifolds as well as an integral lattice associated to the derived category of hyper-Kähler manifolds deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface mimic…
We prove some results on the fibers and images of rational maps from a hyper-Kähler manifold. We study in particular the minimal genus of fibers of a fibration into curves. The last section of this paper is devoted to the study of the rational map defined by a linear system on a hyper-Kähler fourfold satisfying numerical conditions similar to those considered by O'Grady in his study of fourfolds numerically equivalent to $K3^{[2]}$. We extend his results to this more general context.
We introduce and study the notion of "surface decomposable" variety, and discuss the possibility that any projective hyper-Kähler manifold is surface decomposable, which would produce new evidence for Beauville's weak splitting conjecture. We show that surface decomposability relates to the Beauville-Fujiki relation, a constraint on the cohomology ring of the variety, and that general varieties with $h^{2,0}\not=0$ are not surface decomposable. We also formalize the notion of triangle variety that is useful to produce surface decomposition. We show the existence of these geometric structures o…
Using the Minimal Model Program, any degeneration of K-trivial varieties can be arranged to be in a Kulikov type form, i.e. with trivial relative canonical divisor and mild singularities. In the hyper-Kähler setting, we can then deduce a finiteness statement for monodromy acting on $H^2$, once one knows that one component of the central fiber is not uniruled. Independently of this, using deep results from the geometry of hyper-Kähler manifolds, we prove that a finite monodromy projective degeneration of hyper-Kähler manifolds has a smooth filling (after base change and birational modifications…
This note is an erratum to the paper "Tautological classes on moduli spaces of hyper-Kähler manifolds." Thorsten Beckman and Mirko Mauri have pointed to us a gap in the proof of \cite[Theorem 8.2.1]{Duke}. We do not know how to correct the proof. We can only recover a partial statement. This gap affects the proof of one of the two main results of \cite{Duke}, we explain how to correct it.
We prove that the complex cobordism class of any hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension $2n$ is a unique combination with rational coefficients of classes of products of punctual Hilbert schemes of $K3$ surfaces. We also prove a similar result using the generalized Kummer varieties instead of punctual Hilbert schemes. As a key step, we establish a closed formula for the top Chern character of their tangent bundles.

Lusztig defined certain involutions on the equivariant K-theory of Slodowy varieties and gave a characterization of certain bases called canonical bases. In this paper, we give a conjectural generalization of these involutions and K-theoretic canonical bases to conical symplectic resolutions which have good Hamiltonian torus actions and state several conjectures related to them which we check for toric hyper-Kahler manifolds. We also propose an elliptic analogue of these bar involutions. As a verification of our proposal, we explicitly construct elliptic lifts of K-theoretic canonical bases an…
We study a generalization of a conjecture made by Beauville on the Chow ring of hyper-Kähler algebraic varieties. Namely we prove in a number of cases that polynomial cohomological relations involving only CH^1(X) and the Chern classes of X are satisfied in CH(X). These cases are : punctual Hilbert schemes of a K3 surface S parameterizing subschemes of length n, for n<2b_2(S)_tr+5; Fano varieties of lines in a cubic fourfold.
We prove that for any polarized symplectic automorphism of the Fano variety of lines of a cubic fourfold (equipped with the Plücker polarization), the induced action on the Chow group of 0-cycles is identity, as predicted by Bloch-Beilinson conjecture.
We study the moduli space of genus 3 hyperelliptic curves via the weighted projective space of binary octavics. This enables us to create a database of all genus 3 hyperelliptic curves defined over $\mathbb Q$, of weighted moduli height $\mathcal h =1$.
We show that the André motive of a hyper-Kähler variety $X$ over a field $K \subset \mathbb{C}$ with $b_2(X)>6$ is governed by its component in degree $2$. More precisely, we prove that if $X_1$ and $X_2$ are deformation equivalent hyper-Kähler varieties with $b_2(X_i)>6$ and if there exists a Hodge isometry $f\colon H^2(X_1,\mathbb{Q})\to H^2(X_2,\mathbb{Q})$, then the André motives of $X_1$ and $X_2$ are isomorphic after a finite extension of $K$, up to an additional technical assumption in presence of non-trivial odd cohomology. As a consequence, the Galois representations on the étale coho…
Building on an idea of Borcherds, Katzarkov, Pantev, and Shepherd-Barron (who treated the case $e=14$), we prove that the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of degree $2e$ contains complete curves for all $e\geq 62$ and for some sporadic lower values of $e$ (starting at $14$). We also construct complete curves in the moduli spaces of polarized hyper-Kähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type or $\mathrm{Kum}_n$-type for all $n\ge 1$ and polarizations of various degrees and divisibilities.
We study the geometry of exceptional loci of birational contractions of hyper-Kähler fourfolds that are of K3$^{[2]}$-type. These loci are conic bundles over K3 surfaces and we determine their classes in the Brauer group. For this we use the results on twisted sheaves on K3 surfaces, on contractions and on the corresponding Heegner divisors. For a general K3 surface of fixed degree there are three (T-equivalence) classes of order two Brauer group elements. The elements in exactly two of these classes are represented by conic bundles on such fourfolds. We also discuss various examples of such c…
Using the path lattice cohomology we provide a conceptual topological characterization of the geometric genus for certain complex normal surface singularities with rational homology sphere links, which is uniformly valid for all superisolated and Newton non--degenerate hypersurface singularities.
We study Nakai-Moishezon type question and Donaldson's "tamed to compatible" question for almost complex structures on rational four manifolds. By extending Taubes' subvarieties--current--form technique to $J-$nef genus $0$ classes, we give affirmative answers of these two questions for all tamed almost complex structures on $S^2$ bundles over $S^2$ as well as for many geometrically interesting tamed almost complex structures on other rational four manifolds, including the del Pezzo ones.
