Let X be a Kahler manifold that is presented as a Kahler quotient of C^n by the linear action of a compact group G. We define the hyperkahler analogue M of X as a hyperkahler quotient of the cotangent bundle T^*C^n by the induced G-action. Special instances of this construction include hypertoric varieties and quiver varieties. Our aim is to provide a unified treatment of these two previously studied examples, with specific attention to the geometry and topology of the circle action on M that descends from the scalar action on the fibers of the cotangent bundle. We provide a detailed study of this action in the cases where M is a hypertoric variety or a hyperpolygon space.

We study an integration theory in circle equivariant cohomology in order to prove a theorem relating the cohomology ring of a hyperkahler quotient to the cohomology ring of the quotient by a maximal abelian subgroup, analogous to a theorem of Martin for symplectic quotients. We discuss applications of this theorem to quiver varieties, and compute as an example the ordinary and equivariant cohomology rings of a hyperpolygon space.
Let M be a closed symplectic manifold of volume V. We say that the symplectic packings of M by ellipsoids are unobstructed if any collection of disjoint symplectic ellipsoids (possibly of different sizes) of total volume less than V admits a symplectic embedding to M. We show that the symplectic packings by ellipsoids are unobstructed for all even-dimensional tori equipped with Kahler symplectic forms and all closed hyperkahler manifolds of maximal holonomy, or, more generally, for closed Campana simple manifolds (that is, Kahler manifolds that are not unions of their complex subvarieties), as…
Let M be a closed symplectic manifold of volume V. We say that M admits an unobstructed symplectic packing by balls if any collection of symplectic balls (of possibly different radii) of total volume less than V admits a symplectic embedding to M. In 1994 McDuff and Polterovich proved that symplectic packings of Kahler manifolds can be characterized in terms of the Kahler cones of their blow-ups. When M is a Kahler manifold which is not a union of its proper subvarieties (such a manifold is called Campana simple) these Kahler cones can be described explicitly using the Demailly and Paun struct…
We develop a graphical representation of polynomial invariants of unitary gauge groups, and use it to find the algebraic curve corresponding to a hyperkahler quotient of a linear space. We apply this method to four dimensional ALE spaces, and for the A_k, D_k, and E_6 cases, derive the explicit relation between the deformations of the curves away from the orbifold limit and the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters in the corresponding quotient construction. We work out the orbifold limit of E_7, E_8, and some higher dimensional examples.
We propose an infinite-dimensional generalization of Kronheimer's construction of families of hyperkahler manifolds resolving flat orbifold quotients of $\mathbb{R}^4$. As in [Kro89], these manifolds are constructed as hyperkahler quotients of affine spaces. This leads to a study of \emph{singular equivariant instantons} in various dimensions. In this paper, we study singular equivariant Nahm data to produce the family of $D_2$ asymptotically locally flat (ALF) manifolds as a deformation of the flat orbifold $(\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1)/Z_2$. We furthermore introduce a notion of stability for Na…
Motivated by the study of hyperkahler structures in moduli problems and hyperkahler implosion, we initiate the study of non-reductive hyperkahler and algebraic symplectic quotients with an eye towards those naturally tied to projective geometry, like cotangent bundles of blow-ups of linear arrangements of projective space. In the absence of a Kempf-Ness theorem for non-reductive quotients, we focus on constructing algebraic symplectic analogues of additive quotients of affine spaces, and obtain hyperkahler structures on large open subsets of these analogues by comparison with reductive analogu…
Suppose that M is a complete hyperkahler manifold with a compact Lie group K acting via hyperkahler isometries and with hyperkahler moment map $(μ_{\mathbb{C}}, μ_{\mathbb{R}}): M\rightarrow \mathfrak{k}^*\otimes\operatorname{Im}(\mathbb{H})$. It is a long-standing problem to determine when the hyperkahler Kirwan map $H^*_K(M,\mathbb{Q}) \longrightarrow H^*(M//K, \mathbb{Q})$ is surjective. We show that for each $n\geq 2$, the natural $U(n)$-action on $M = T^*(SL_n\times\mathbb{C}^n)$ admits a hyperkahler quotient for which the hyperkahler Kirwan map fails to be surjective. As a tool, we estab…
Let $M$ be a simple holomorphically symplectic manifold, that is, a simply connected holomorphically symplectic manifold of Kahler type with $h^{2,0}=1$. We prove that the group of holomorphic automorphisms of $M$ acts on the set of faces of its Kahler cone with finitely many orbits, whenever $b_2(M)\neq 5$. This is a version of the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for hyperkahler manifolds. The proof is based on the following observation, proven with ergodic theory. Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian orbifold of dimension at least three, constant negative curvature and finite volume, and $\{S_…
Let $M$ be an irreducible holomorphically symplectic manifold. We show that all faces of the Kahler cone of $M$ are hyperplanes $H_i$ orthogonal to certain homology classes, called monodromy birationally minimal (MBM) classes. Moreover, the Kahler cone is a connected component of a complement of the positive cone to the union of all $H_i$. We provide several characterizations of the MBM-classes. We show the invariance of MBM property by deformations, as long as the class in question stays of type (1,1). For hyperkahler manifolds with Picard group generated by a negative class $z$, we prove tha…
We generalize the Jeffrey-Kirwan localization theorem for non-compact symplectic and hyperKahler quotients. Similarly to the circle compact integration of Hausel and Proudfoot we define equivariant integrals on non-compact manifolds using the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne localization formula as formal definition. We introduce a so called equivariant Jeffrey-Kirwan residue and we show that it shares similar properties as the usual one. Our localization formula has the same structure as the usual Jeffrey-Kirwan formula, but it uses formal integration and equivariant residue. We also give a version…
Toric hyperk{ä}hler manifolds are quaternion analog of toric varieties. Bielawski pointed out that they can be glued by cotangent bundles of toric varieties. Following his idea, viewing both toric varieties and toric hyperk{ä}her manifolds as GIT quotients, we first establish geometrical criteria for the semi-stable points. Then based on these criteria, we show that the cotangent bundles of compact toric varieties in the core of toric hyperk{ä}hler manifold are sufficient to glue the desired toric hyperk{ä}hler manifold.
Extending work of Bielawski-Dancer and Konno, we develop a theory of toric hyperkahler varieties, which involves toric geometry, matroid theory and convex polyhedra. The framework is a detailed study of semi-projective toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of affine spaces by torus actions, and specifically, of Lawrence toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of even-dimensional affine spaces by symplectic torus actions. A toric hyperkahler variety is a complete intersection in a Lawrence toric variety. Both varieties are non-compact, and they share the same cohomology ring, namely, the Stanle…
We show that a compact Kahler manifold admitting a nondegenerate holomorphic 2-form valued in a line bundle is a finite cyclic cover of a hyperkahler manifold. With respect to the connection induced by the locally hyperkahler metric, the form is parallel. We then describe the structure of the fundamenal group of such manifolds and derive some consequences.
We study CR geometry in arbitrary codimension, and introduce a process, which we call the Levi-Kahler quotient, for constructing Kahler metrics from CR structures with a transverse torus action. Most of the paper is devoted to the study of Levi-Kahler quotients of toric CR manifolds, and in particular, products of odd dimensional spheres. We obtain explicit descriptions and characterizations of such quotients, and find Levi-Kahler quotients of products of 3-spheres which are extremal in a weighted sense introduced by G. Maschler and the first author.
Let M be a 2n-dimensional Kahler manifold deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length n subschemes of a K3 surface S. Let Mon be the group of automorphisms of the cohomology ring of M, which are induced by monodromy operators. The second integral cohomology of M is endowed with the Beauville-Bogomolov bilinear form. We prove that the restriction homomorphism from Mon to the isometry group O[H^2(M)] is injective, for infinitely many n, and its kernel has order at most 2, in the remaining cases. For all n, the image of Mon in O[H^2(M)] is the subgroup generated by reflections with res…
Let $\{ρ_\ell\}_\ell$ be the system of $\ell$-adic representations arising from the $i$th $\ell$-adic cohomology of a complete smooth variety $X$ defined over a number field $K$. Let $Γ_\ell$ and $\mathbf{G}_\ell$ be respectively the image and the algebraic monodromy group of $ρ_\ell$. We prove that the reductive quotient of $\mathbf{G}_\ell^\circ$ is unramified over every degree 12 totally ramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$ for all sufficiently large $\ell$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition $(\ast)$ on $\{ρ_\ell\}_\ell$ such that for all sufficiently large $\ell$, the subgrou…
